Headphones Button Won't End/Answer Call - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have some cheap-but-effective headphones (honestly can't tender the name... $8 on amazon) that I have used for over a year on my M8. They have a single button for play/pause music and answer/end calls. This button no longer answers/ends calls on my 5x. Has anyone experienced similar issues with 5x not obeying headphones buttons during calls? I don't have another way of testing on my end, but confirm the headphones are still working on other devices and there's nothing lodged in the 5x headphones jack...
Also, if your headphones are working as expected, which brand/model are they? Thanks!

I have a similar problem on a different phone (I got here trying to google solutions for it). Pretty sure it's an Android bug. Try long pressing the button. It's not ideal, but it's what I'm doing for now and it works.

Making button near the microphone of Apple In Ear Headphones (ADDIEM) work with Defy

I'm not sure if it is an appropriate forum for this topic, I hope so. At the beginning I would like to apologise for my English level, I'm not native speaker
I have recently bought Apple In-Ear Headphones. I have read that Defy has exactly the same pin configuration in the mini-jack so I thought the buttons and microphone in these headphones will work. In fact they doesn't. Pushing buttons doesn't do anything and mic doesn't work.
My question is: is there any possibility of making them work by using some kind of application or maybe it is my ROM that is the problem (WajkIUI). I have also SoundMAGIC mp21 with the same pin configuration, but these ones work properly. I have tried several applications from Google Play, but none of them does work. Is there any other option why they don't work.
Thank in advance for answer.
Does anyone know if there is any solution?
If I remember well, there might be some SMC resistors and capacitors in the microphone part. So, the phone senses the headset and the button pushes by sensing the difference in resistance or capacitance between the mic wire and ground. I'm not sure about it, as I'm not that good at electronics.
Maybe your SoundMAGIC mp21's measures fall somewhere between the Apples and the Motorolas so they are sensed by both the iPhone and the Defy.
But I could do some measures on my headset (if I can find it).
Cheers!
I have these exact phones and they are working with me (on CM7). They should work in stock ROM to. The button works by shooting the Mic with ground. But I find the button failing on me... sometimes it pauses the song without me pushing the button. Apple headsets with 3 buttons give problems sometimes with the middle button. Other two never work.

edit: The one's I have are also the soundmagic. Also have sinnheiser headphones with 3-buttons and non of them work. Altough the call-accept should work as it is just shorting the 2 wires. I'm gonna try and measure a bit.

I wouldn't like to have such a long wire, so I will have to test other ROMs if the button and mic works there.
Thanks for advice.
If someone had any other suggestion, i would be grateful for an answer.
I found the solution by myself: you have to plug the headset with one of the buttons being pushed. Then volume buttons work as play/pause. And that is enough for me

Volume Control headset

My stock headphones broke and I wanted a replacement, but a nice sounding ones.
Went to a local store, asked for a headset with remote and they showed me an Aiaiai Tracks (these have mic+volume control), but, as many of you may know, the "iPhone" headsets aren't compatible with the XPlay, and so I was getting an "Accessory not supported" error.
I researched a bit, and finally got a CTIA<->OMTP adapter, returned to the store and surprisingly the headset still not worked, I was no longer getting the error but no sound came from the headset, in fact, seemed like my phone didn't detect them since the music played trough the loudspeakers. Then asked an employee if they had a similar ones and gave me a Marshall Major (just mic and the central button), plugged with the adapter and worked just fine, the mic, the button...
Nevertheless I prefer the sound of the Tracks over the Major and I think that the only difference on their connections is the volume control since they are both "iPhone compatible".
Can anyone explain me how can I get them to work?, I don't mind if the volume buttons don't work, just as far as I can use the mic and the central button.
I think I got the answer
Well, I stumbled upon a fix from a Xperia Ray owner at the sonymobile.com forums:

I also bought a Fiio LU2 Smart Adapter Cable, and I had it all packed up to return it, when I read a review on amazon.co.uk from a guy who said he taped down the button on his mic line and that made it work. So I tried holding down the in-line button on my headset, and voila, it works...in a sense. Here is what I have and did:
Xperia Ray and Bose MIE2i headset. The headset alone gives the "Accessory not Supported" message. Headset with Fiio LU2 just plays through phone speakers.
Plug headset into Fiio LU2 Smart Adapter Cable.
Get a piece of audio (mp3 or whatever) ready on Ray.
Hold Down the main button on the in-line headset controller and keep holding it down.
Plug Fiio LU2 Smart Adapter Cable into Ray.
Start audio on Ray for at least 5 seconds -it plays through headset-
Release headset button.
You can stop the audio if you wish. Headset will continue to function.
The audio and mic will function for me on my headset until I unplug it. I haven't tried powering the Ray all the way down, but the headset stays working even after waking from standby. None of the in-line headset controls will work for me.

The downside is that it appears that the central button won't work this way .
Also, I recently flashed an ICS rom, so I'm not sure if I still have this issue.
Once I get my adapter (lost the one I got earlier) I'll update this post, just in case anybody cared

Lumia 900 Headphone Compatability

As a thank you to everyone who submitted input on this topic I created the attached spreadsheet. Let me know if I have any information wrong.

(Original Post)
I have a pair of Skullcandy Aviators, which other than listening in stereo have no functionality. I am curious about other Skullcandy and other branded headphones. I would appreciate it if anyone would chime in with their own headphone experiences:
SKULLCANDY AVIATORS
Stereo music - yes
Stereo (dual-mono) calls - yes
Mic - no
Track skip - no
Track rewind - no
Volume up - no
Volume down - no
Call pickup - no
Call hangup - no
The Nokia Purity by Monster in ear work for:
Mic: Yes
Vol: Yes
Play/Pause: Yes
Call pickup - Yes
Call hangup - Yes
Master Search: Yes (Hold center button down) Make calls, search, open app, etc..
But sound bad for anything not based centered.
The over the ear Purity HD's sound pretty decent. More natural and not as bass heavy as Beats. They are made to control everything listed above.
I have the bowers and Wilkins p5. The inline buttons didn't work for my dvp and I doubt it will be any different for the lumia 900 since the b&w were geared for iPhones. But I will try and give my feedback here soon. I think the only thing that worked on my dvp and the b&w were Te mute button. I could receive a call but they couldn't hear me.
I have been trying to contact monster so I can ge a replacement inline cable from their HD purity. Cut the inline control off of that and fan my own to work with the b&w

I have the purity hd on-ear (not the in-ear), and the inline remote only works fully when the phone is unlocked, or on the lockscreen but not asleep. When the phone is asleep the volume will work all the time, the single press pause/play will work about 50% of the time, and the next/previous double/triple press works about 10% of the time. Needless to say, I'm amazingly upset about this. I'm taking them to the AT&T store in the morning to see if it's just my phone or all lumia 900's. Since this problem is amazingly similar to the problem I had with my Focus S, I'm suspicious to say the least.
A guy on wpcentral.com said the in-ears work completely all the time.
B & W C5: No workie
I was seduced by the B&W C5 and they have the iphone only disease.
The sound is just about perfect, which is why is so disappointing.
The worst part is that the connector layout not only prevents the in line mic from working, but the handset mic as well, so it's a 22X killer!
Play controls work
Volume control does NOT work
Mic does NOT work
The headphones I have from my Titan work perfectly. Play, Volume, and Mic all work. Even on the lock screen.

I picked up the over the ears on launch at ATT and returned them the next day. I purchased the in-ears from amazon and LOVE them.
Sound quality is good on both. I just did not like the over the ear feel and the controls did not work very well on them. I thought they were uncomfortable after a few hours of wear and had a terrible whistle from the wind.
The in ears are one of the best pairs of in-ears I have had. I am comparing them to SKull Candy and Ultimate ears.
They also match the phone rather nice and both have a really nice cord that wont tangle.
Also- The headphones that came with my Focus worked 100% with all the controls and dont sound too bad either. The Purity are way better. Worth the $100 price tag and Amazon overnighted them to me for only $3. Free 2 day shipping with prime.
Ditto for the purity in-ears here. They sound pretty good, and the controller works perfectly. I have no idea why the purity on-ears controller is so spotty, but whatever.
My only complaint is that the flat cable makes it difficult to wrap behind/over the ears to eliminate the thump bump, but otherwise I'm liking them alot.

Would you elaborate on this? If I pay $200 for mediocre sound quality headphones the controls better work.
Filo LU1 Smart Adapter

Has anyone tried this adapter with a Windows Phone?
Best way to describe it is inconsistent. The double tap, next track is the worst. Seems like volume control and phone answer is very consistent. As many others have posted, it may be a known bug when the phone is asleep when people are affected. My Samsung focus headphones worked better than the purity so take it for what its worth. Still very happy with the in -ear. Over the ear not as much but a majority of that is personal preferance. I still thing controls worked better on in ear model though. Only had over hear for one day to compare.
I use my old headset from the Focus, and I too have the issue with the track controls not working when the screen is off. I use the feature a lot when walking to class. I hate having to keep taking my phone in and out of my picket, or pressing the button over and over until it does what it needs to.
Hey guys I just got a set of Nokia bh-111 Bluetooth earphones but unfortunately I'm unable to make or receive calls. Though I can use all audio controls and even do voice to text? If anyone can chime in and help me out it would be appreciated!

I have this issue. Got a replacement and same issue so I'm thinking its a phone problem
I'm curious if you're trying only with the screen off, or with it on as well.
For me, all of the buttons except for the power button work very inconsistently with the screen off: the volume buttons on the phone, the camera button, and the headset button. They work 100% of the time with the screen on. I think it's just a software bug when the screen is off.
Also, other than the above issue, I believe that any single-button iPhone compatible headset should work. That's been my experience with three different headsets, the Etymotic hf2, the Phonak PFE122, and the Meelec M6P. Three-button iPhone headsets will not work because they do something proprietary.
I currently have a set of Nokia earphones that came with my old Nokia N8 and the controls on the earphones does not work. Even the sound is not full compatible... My other pair of ear phones that came with my Samsung Galaxy Player 5 works perfectly.
I got a pair of Bose MIE2i which are technically designed for iDevices and nothing worked except holding the middle button to invoke speech. But the mic didn't work so even that was useless. Button presses resulted in a weird click in the headphones too.
Exchanged today for the Bose MIE2 designed for 'everything else' and initially it wasn't working and then it was. Like there's a delay before the phone sees and starts working with them.
I may exchange again if the iPhone ones will work the same so I can use it on my iPad with the volume controls.

Addendum:
After some testing I'm finding that I have plug in and remove the headphones repeatedly until I hear a little click through the headphones. At that point the button on my headphones will control the music and speech recognition correctly.
Also, when the button works, the mic does too.
I'm finding this pattern on both my HD2 and my Lumia 900 so that kinda points at a WP7 issue.
Could a few of you with buttons that don't work try this out and see if it changes for you as well? Annoying but at least it opens an option (with some work).

Ordered it. We'll give it a shot and see. I have a pair of Klipsch Image One over the ear that I love. I hope I get mic back with this. Awesome (pipe dream) if volume worked.

[Q] Low Mic volume when plugging in earbuds

During either a skype, or google hangouts call, if I plug a pair of earbuds into my Nexus 7 (2013) the internal microphone level drops significantly (around 70-80%). This makes internet calls while wearing earbuds impossible. Using the speakers everything works fine, but this leads to feedback noise.
Through a couple hours of research I heard of a similar, but different, issue occurring with Nexus 4 phones in inline headsets would be very quiet. But this issue is different, as it happens with any pair of regular earbuds and headphones.
I tested during a skype call, as soon as I plugged in my earbuds the microphone volume dropped. Once I unplugged them the microphone level went back to a normal level.
Has anyone else dealt with this problem? My brother owns a nexus 7 as well and has the EXACT same issue. Might there be any patch or fix that my googling missed? Thank you,

Using a PC headset possible?

Is it possible to use a headset that I use on my PC with the Nexus 5x? I can't seem to find anything definitive on this subject. Most forums talk about inline mics with controls, not a pc headset.
I've tried connecting a couple headsets to my phone (4pole 3.5mm) but the mic does not work during phone calls (only mic based app that I've tried). I can hear the other person just fine though.
Am I just SOL? Any work arounds?
I'd like to use a pc headset since the quality is far better than an inline mic, especially with a proper mic boom.

Most desktop headsets use two plugs - one for mic and one for stereo headphone. I have an adapter that is the opposite: it allows me to use a phone headset that works with the 5X, etc, with a desktop. It has a single female headphone jack that has 4 connections: Left, Right, Mic, and ground. What you need is most likely the opposite: two female jacks (one for mic, one for headphones) and a single standard cell phone plug with the 4 connections. For example, something http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00ENFA3GO.
But now, some PCs have the same combination mic/headphone jack as cell phones. Those should work, I believe, as I've used the phone headsets with some PCs.
One thing to keep in mind. When you press the button on the headset while talking, it will mute your voice; you need to hold the button down a second or two to hang up. Still, it should work until you press the button.
.......My pc headsets are 4pole on a single 3.5mm plug. There are no buttons on these headsets like phone headsets have.
