Using a PC headset possible? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to use a headset that I use on my PC with the Nexus 5x? I can't seem to find anything definitive on this subject. Most forums talk about inline mics with controls, not a pc headset.
I've tried connecting a couple headsets to my phone (4pole 3.5mm) but the mic does not work during phone calls (only mic based app that I've tried). I can hear the other person just fine though.
Am I just SOL? Any work arounds?
I'd like to use a pc headset since the quality is far better than an inline mic, especially with a proper mic boom.

Most desktop headsets use two plugs - one for mic and one for stereo headphone. I have an adapter that is the opposite: it allows me to use a phone headset that works with the 5X, etc, with a desktop. It has a single female headphone jack that has 4 connections: Left, Right, Mic, and ground. What you need is most likely the opposite: two female jacks (one for mic, one for headphones) and a single standard cell phone plug with the 4 connections. For example, something http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00ENFA3GO.
But now, some PCs have the same combination mic/headphone jack as cell phones. Those should work, I believe, as I've used the phone headsets with some PCs.
One thing to keep in mind. When you press the button on the headset while talking, it will mute your voice; you need to hold the button down a second or two to hang up. Still, it should work until you press the button.

.......My pc headsets are 4pole on a single 3.5mm plug. There are no buttons on these headsets like phone headsets have.

HTCext to 3.5mm audio adapter mic problem

Hi!
I have this for some time: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938811&pf_rd_i=507846
(Actually, I baught it in a store so I'm not sure it's excatly the same but it looks the same)
Recently, I baught this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Headphone-HTC-VIVA-exclusive-Duragadget/dp/B001LIM8F0/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_2
When I plug the old one in my HTC Touch Cruise and then stereo headphones, to it's 3.5mm jack (without microphone), I can use phone's mic and plugged headphones to talk.
When I do the same with new one I can't use phone's mic. I can hear the other side through headphones but I can't be heard.
What might be a reason for this?
And can I fix this problem somehow so I don't have to unplug headphones each time I want to talk if I'm listening to the music?
Thank you very much in advance!
P.S. FM Radio works with both adapters.
there is no std for 3.5mm mini-jack with mic included
the org spc is only audio out
some headset makers add another ring which don't interfere with the
left, right and ground connectors
but there is no std they can follow
thumb rule is if mic is not mentioned in relation with the 3.5mm adaptor
mic is not supported as they use the pure audio out mini-jack std
thumb rule 2 is if mic is mentioned but it's not the same manufactures
in both end they may not implement mic in 3.5mm the same way and it will
only work with audio out
Thank you for your quick answer but I'm not sure you understood me.
I do not use external mic.
In first case I use 3in1 adapter and my stereo headphone with 3.5mm connector without microphone.
In second case I use this simple in-line adapter and same headphones.
In first case, during call, I can hear the other side through headphones, and the other side hears me through built-in-phone microphone.
In second case, during call, I can hear the other side through headphones, but other side can't hear me.
In both cases FM radio works well. I mention this because I saw that mic and FM antenna are on the same pin in USBext (if that's important since I don't use external mic)
about fm then all it needs is an antenna connected to to it
any stereo maybe even mono connected with a wire will do
heck you can cut off the airplugs from a cable and use it for fm
normaly when one connects a headset speaker and mic on the device itself
are muted
even if it's a headset without mic so cool that your fist case works at all
This first one adapter is original HTC. It has 2.5mm, 3.5mm, USBext for data and charging and USBext for headset connectors. And unfortunately it is too big for any other use except in car (to connect to car's audio aux input) or at home (to connect to home AV reciever).
So I baught this cheap simple in-line adapter. And it is suprisingly well built. And it works great as stereo adapter. Only problem is that it turns of microphone.
Anyhow I did some additional testing.
I tried SE Xperia X1 since it has built in 3.5mm connector. and it works like this first one. That means microphone works.
I also tried plugging this first adapter into my touch cruise and then plugging this second adapter into it's USBext for headset. The result is the same as if I plug second adapter directly into touch cruise. Microphone doesn't work.
Interesting thing is that in all cases (including Xperia) when I listen to the music with external headphones soudn comes only out of them. But when phone starts ringing sound comes from both headphones and from built-in-phone external speaker.
!!! Maybe the most important thing is that microphone doesn't work even if only second adapter is plugged into the phone, without headphones plugged in it.
Obviously this second non-HTC adapter doesn't work as HTC originally planned that kind of adapter to work and now I need a way to fix this.
It seems to me that this adapter is maybe stereo adapter with mic, but I don't have that kind of headset to try it. And if I had it I'm not sure it would be the right one since there's no standard for them.
As I see it when I plug in adapter phone somehow detects it and changes some registry key which mutes microphone.
Does anybody know what to change in registry so that phone doesn't mute microphone?
Or how can I see what changes in registry when I plug in the adapter?
Do you think if I manage to fix this, will that affect bluetooth headset also?
Thank you very much for any help!

Possible to use wired external mic in car?

So right now in my car I have a cradle for my phone to sit in my dash allowing me to see it without holding it and us the phone practically hands free while driving. The only problem is that my mic picks up so much background noise it is impossible to use for calls or voice search while I'm driving, making it very frustrating to use while I'm driving. I don't like Bluetooth because its just another thing I have to think about charging, so I was going to dee if it is possible to use an external mic via the 3.5 jack of the phone while still having the sound come out of the speakers in the car. Does anyone know:
1. If you can use a wired external mic for calls, etc
2. Is it possible to have a mic and sound commingle out of the jack at once
3. How would you set this up to work? Would it require custom work or is there something I could buy to fulfill this need?

I dont see why this wouldnt work. My nexus supports headsets with an inline mic. So couldnt you just use one of these headsets and then splice the left/right into rca audio jack for your aux input to your car stereo? Or just use the wired headset with speaker phone and the inline mic?

Wired Headset

I brought the AT&T version of the Glide and it didn't come with a wired headset. I've tried a headset for a Galaxy S, but the buttons didn't work. Could anyone with the Rogers headset ( I think it comes with one) share the model number, or if anyone else has a working let me know where I can source one?
Thanks!
I have the headset in my hand that you are mentioning but I do not see any model number anywhere to help you out. All I see is a Samsung logo on each ear piece as well as a Large L or R. On the Wire where it splits from 1 to 2 wires (1 for each ear) there is a small Made in China written on it. No other writing can be seen.
Damn, thanks anyway

Interesting I did not know that the PLAY and Forward/Revers works from a Wired headset. That is good to know.
Thanks.
I bought these Samsung earbuds and use them along with Jays Headset Control from the Play store. Thanks to the app the one answer button can handle all music controls and even initiate voice actions.
Here are some from Samsung:
http://www.shopandroid.com/samsung-ehs60-35mm-stereo-headset/11A29A9345.htm
Didn't tried them, but since they're said to be made for the Captivate Glide, they should work.
Finally got around to grabbing the HTC ones and they're working fine. Audio quality is half decent too.
Desire headset isn't working on calls for me. I hear fine but the other side says the sound is terrible.
Hope this helps
Samsung galaxy one and newer Samsung phones use two different 3.5 mm jack
The newer jack like on gs2&3 are more standards. The remote doesn't work because on gs1 it's wired different.
As of today
Samsung
Htc
Sony (not Sony Ericsson)
Use the same Standards 3.5mm jack
So of buy a htc ear headphone it work on all 3 companies
( i don't know about other companies)
The model no of the headset that comes with captivate glide rogers is GH59-10419E.
Any mention of headset in the glide manual talks about micro USB.
(Drowning in google search results, most of which don't apply [Why do they assume if you want an adapter you want a crappy / cheap earbud headset too?]. So posting here to start from a list of those who have a glide and specific experience!)
Messages here seem to indicate that standard 3 connector, 2.5mm cordless phone headsets work. Can anyone confirm?
(I tried a friend's 3.5mm headset, got audio, but only for media not for anything else, per playing with settings / audio. It also has an additional doohickey / adapter where the headphones plug into a mic adapter, which in turn plugs into the 3.5mm jack instead of the headphones, directly - when using that not even media came through.)
(And even when audio came through, the navigator voice didn't come through, as it did not on a bluetooth headset. I can't hear the navigator across the car - how to get it to play to a headset?)
Source of a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter known to work?
Or 2.5mm to micro usb adapter?
Let alone, pc headset, 2 x 3.5mm, to micro usb adapter?
Thanks for any pointers / good search terms to known good working beasties, drowning in search results.
I need yet another crappy headset like I need ... druther just use one I already know and like and adapt it to the glide.
I'm guessing an adapter would need buttons on it for talk (and / or volume?).
I see on amazon there's a straight micro usb to 3.5mm adapter however I suspect it would be audio only (yes?), and worried that since it's a solid doohickey, not two ends separated by wire, that some end would get easily broken.
Advice, thoughts, experiences?

[Q] confused with bluetooth and audio

I have a standard att galaxy note 2, not rooted.
Typically I use my bt headset to talk on the phone. Recently I learned my car has an aux line in so I can also listen to music.
I used a 3.5mm jack for a while with respecrive rca adapter to my phone. This was nice, and added bonus if my bt headset battery died, the phone conversation would play over the car's speakers and the phone's mic picks up my voice.
The cables were irritating, so I purchased a miccus bt rx thing. Small, slides right on the side of my center console, out of the way.
Music plays fine, but cannot figure out for the life of me how to get the phone conversation onto the car speakers. Instead, the phone shifts to speakerphone. Why won't this work like the wired adapter?
Is this possible?
Thank you for your time, sorry for the silly question.
Are you sure that the phone audio option is selected in the BT settings?

Simply put, the problem is with the 3.5mm male plug that goes into the headset port. Does this new cable have 3 or 4 pins? If it has 4 pins (the regular 3 pins plus the one for the microphone) then if the resistance (measured in OHMs) isn't correct, then the phone should switch over to SpeakerPhone (as set in the firmware).
So in effect, there isn't a problem with your phone, its just that you may have a cable with the 4 pins, but since your radio-adapter isn't doing anything with the microphone portion, then the phone switches over as it is supposed to.
Edit: Ignore the above, I didn't realize you were doing this with a bluetooth connection. Your Bluetooth receiver may be outdated and not support the "handsfree" profile.

Bluetooth adapter that makes use of inline mic

So now that we've courageously broken free of the burdensome shackles of the 3.5mm jack I guess we got to make the move to bluetooth. Every adapter I see seems to have an inbuilt microphone and none of them make use of the inline mic that many headphones come with does anyone know of any adapter that doesn't need to be dug out of a pocket to reply to a call?
PS: before anyone mentions the Sound Blaster E3 yes it has a mic input but only if you split the jack into separate mic/earphone jacks and only when connected to a pc via USB. I've asked elsewhere and this has come up once or twice.

I am confused. What do you need an adapter for Bluetooth? Can you show an example?

Ah ok that explains a lot. The way I was picturing in my head confused me lol.
I have not seen any of those that have inline mics with a single 3.5mm.

There are good number of bluetooth headsets with mics that you get for the same or less than the price of those. Or if you have a set of wired headsets that you're really attached too, why not just use the USB-C ->3.5mm that will be included in the box?
