RUU flash failed: -2, 8: failed to flash via download.zip - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to flash the latest 2.10.401.1 RUU using an SD card. The flash started and then gave an error message " Failed: -2, 8: fail to flash via downloadzip " The phone is stuck at the htc white startup screen. The phone is S-ON and the bootloader is relocked. I can reboot into download mode. I tried to unlock the bootloader but I get an error. Is there any way out of this?
Thanks

This firmware (2.10.401.1) does not yet exist in the form of RUU. Latest RUU only 1.40.

Thank you for your reply. That's worrying! So is this a fake? I got it from here https://fl1.androidfilehost.com/dl/...0601_71.02.50709G_F_release_444118_signed.zip
I've tried to flash 1.40.401.8 by SD card. I immediately get a " Failed: -2, 19: fail to flash via downloadzip " error. Is there any way to recover from this?
Thanks again

Thanks for the suggestion. Can I set S-OFF if my bootloader is locked? Would S-OFF let me fix this problem?

Yes, S-OFF would probably solve your problem since you were able to downgrade your firmware with older RUUs if your phone was S-OFF. Nevertheless you need a working system and root because the only way to achieve S-OFF on the M9 is the sunshine app. Ignore what I wrote in the last sentence. I forgot that you can get S-OFF by using a java card. However I have no expierences with java cards so I can't tell you whether there are conditions that need to be fulfilled if you want to use one.

Thanks again for your reply. Do you know if Sunshine needs an unlocked bootloader and root to work. I don't have either. Java card seems to need me to ship my phone. I'm not in the USA so that will be a problem.

Sunshine needs an unlocked bootloader, root and a booting system on the M9. So it's not an option in your current situation.
You can buy a java card on your own (I know that's a bad suggestion because they're so expensive) or you look for someone who owns one and does not live in the States. Some phone repair shops here in Germany advertise that they do java card service so I highly doubt that they are only available in the US.
Edit: Or as said before, you can use the RUU service I linked in post #4.

Thanks for your patience. Looks like the RUU service you referenced is my best chance to get my phone working. Thanks for the link - I wouldn't have thought of looking for that. I can't find any prices to buy a Java card. I get the impression it would be cheaper to buy a new phone! There are lots of posts about sending your phone off to somebody that already has a Java card. They all seem to be in the States. I've learnt an expensive lesson - make sure that the RUU you're going to flash is good before you flash it! Or stick with OTAs!
Many thanks for your help.

RUU Stock

Hi
I have accidentaly wiped system and sd card in CWM and cant mount via usb. I cannot find a stock HTC One X RUU and I had downloaded o2 RUU (would prefer carrier branded as want to return!!! although doesn't matter) but that was corrupted and downloaded off a chiness site that has stopped hosting it!
Please help me!
Doesnt matter if all you can find is a recovery that you can mount USB!! That would be great!!
Thank you very much guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you very much for all of your help! I have solved my issue.
I needed to download the stock o2 uk RUU and relock the bootloader and run the program in fast boot. I have just made my nandroid backup and planning to upload it so anyone else can use it! (it wont have my details on, just as if the os has been installed from scratch)
Steven
Please read before posting/flashing/wiping.
What is the CID of your device. You can only flash a stock RUU with matching CID.
So you need to download the correct RUU for your device.
All stock RUUs available are here
.
Keep thread on topic please
How do I find my CID?

If you would have spent 10 seconds looking in the Dev thread you would have found a list of all the available RUU's to download.
Download your required RUU, boot into Fastboot-USB and run.
Next time be more careful and fully understand what you are doing before doing it otherwise you will end up with a £600 paperweight.

Though I also wonder. How do you match CID to the firmware package? When I try to get my CID in fastboot or w/e, it says no CID like i've read around here. Any thoughts?

Okay, I guess i will have to wait until the clockwork recovery gets USB mount!
Sorry but if you just want to return to stock you can do
1. Restore you nandroid backup, flash stock recovery and then relock the bootloader.
OR
2. You can flash stock recovery, relock bootloader and then run the RUU that corresponds to your CID/region.
I am probably answering my own question my CID is H3G_001. There doesnt appear to a 3 mobile ruu at all. Any help here? Fortunately its not urgent but may be handy if/when they release the upgrade

[Q] Back to full stock with s-on

Hi guys,
need your help.
I have Europe M9, with S-ON.
Rooted it, and installed TWRP, installed custom rom.
How to revert it to full stock? I have sold the phone, and now buyer wants it back to way it were.
Thanks.
Thankfully it's pretty easy; just download your carrier specific RUU to restore to full stock. It's a Windows executable that completely wipes & return your phone to factory state.
I have bought it in Telenor Serbia it was on 1.32.401.15. Should I use any Europe RUU, or do I need to find one exact to match my carrier, and-or my firmware version?
sorry if being noob, but cannot understand this HTC's nonsense (s-on/s-off, cid, hboot...) thats the exact reason why I have sold it. to complicated for me...
I just want it up and running, and trust me, I will never EVER buy another HTC again.

Since there are two different versions of your firmware and I don't know which one is the correct one for you I would suggest you to use this firmware and downgrade to 1.32.401.8. This works because the aboot has not been updated until now. The process itself is very easy:
Download the RUU
Rename it to 0PJAIMG.zip (that's a zero at the beginning not an O)
Copy the file on an external SD card that is formatted to fat32 and not bigger than 32 gb
Boot into download mode
Follow the instructions that are shown on your M9's screen
Congratulation you are now back on stock rom and firmware
You have to use either this way or the fastboot flashing method since there are no RUU executables for the european version.
Btw: No one here forced you to buy the M9. Since it's simply a matter of taste it's up to you which device you choose. I personally prefer HTC's user friendliness in regard to bootloader unlock and rooting (compare it for example with Samsung's Knox system). But this is not the right place for that debate.
Edit: Since my phone is S-OFF I'm not completely sure but you might have to relock your bootloader or step 5 might no work properly.
I have the same problem, i wanna know how to restore it to full stock, i need it just in case something happens to phone and i need to use my waranty. I'm also on telenor serbia. Any detailed instructions would be much appreciated. And one more thing, will i be able to recevie OTA updates even though its rooted ?

Root by itself doesn't prevent OTAs, but changes to the recovery do. As far as I know, acquiring root (for this device) always involves flashing a custom recovery. So OTA aren't possible until the stock recovery is restored.
Do I need to have sd card, or can I flash it from pc using adb?
I have already tried this method, and fastboot gave me an error 22? Maybe I got wrong firmware. Will try again, thanks.

There is a RUU list in the General forum. Not all configurations have RUUs, unfortunately, as it has always been with HTC.

By far the easiest way for the inexperienced is to use the windows exe version linked to a few posts ago .
If you're on 1.32.401.15 then simply flash 1.32.401.17 using the exe version. Simply run windows program and follow on screen prompts .
Main limitation if you're S on is it will only allow upgrade that is to go to higher number as described .
I think there is also a 1.32.401.8 exe but that's an earlier version so if you tried to use that and you were on higher version such as 1.32.401.15 then it wouldn't allow unless you had obtained S off.

One more thing, i received lates OTA update, but it wont instal because recovery isnt stock. I found stock signed, when i flash it will the phone factory reset or not ?

Phone now shows S-on and need to flash back to factory stock 5.0.2 Verizon

I need to return my phone to Verizon. I just noticed that in bootloader it now reads ***LOCKED*** S-ON. I am on HBOOT 1.61. I never turned it S-ON. Please tell me that I don't have to use Sunshine. I just bought a license for the replacement phone and just want to get this back to the factory. My CID-11111111 OS-6.22.605.3 I am searching the threads for an answer and can't find one. I did rumrunner, firewater to get there originally but that doesn't look like that is remotely possible. Sorry to start a thread but I think I would rather do whatever I have to do to not pay for my replacement.

Please tell me how to flash this. Can I use adb and reboot-booloader then flash oemRUU. I'm just confused a little bit because I don't see a rom update utility like sprint that you run from your PC. I haven't seen any threads about phone's showing up as S-ON again so I'm being very cautious. I was able to use the utility to show it as untampered. I tried to run Sunshine and it said my phone was S-OFF. It's very confusing and haven't been able to find a walk through for this situation anywhere.
I found this HSM_M7_WL_L50_SENSE60_MR_VERIZON_WWE_6.22.605.6_HSM_Radio_1.13.41.1209_NV_VZW_4.64_002_release_460480_signed3y3glpox68e83uf3 (1) (1).zip
I would try Sunshine's tech support first. You paid for their product, so they should walk you through what you need. They were very helpful with me when I accidentally turned my phone back to S-on .

I didn't flash an hboot. I used the "locked", "relocked", "unlocked", program by adb and it showed locked in fastboot. The Hboot was incorrect but I was happy. It didn't say relocked or tampered. Everything on the screen was correct.
The problem with doing it with Sunshine...I was fortunate enough to get my phone two years ago and used the other way. My replacement had to flash a previous hboot to be able to use sunshine and flash back to a Santod creation.

Need stock RRU recovery for Vodafone 2.10.161.7

I currently soft bricked my phone after trying to restore my phone back to complete stock ROM to the point the OS wont boot up, instead the red triangle comes up, I'm looking for the RRU for Vodafone as because I'm currently S-On which means I can't upgrade or downgrade my firmware. I'm sorry I'm a little new to rooting, but i will answer questions however I can

Thanks for the fast reply, I found the same RRU updating utility in a forums here too, but I get the error 115 when trying to update which is odd even after relocking the bootloader. This is why I need one for the version I'm running as I think the reason me being stuck now on S-On is causing issues.
Still really needing that RRU, I have an expensive paperweight here and no phone so some help would really be appreciated

Only find this 1.40.161.8 RUU
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347798272
I also need 2.10.161.7 or newer.
I relocked my bootloater + updating the firmwarepart to 2.10.161.7.
So I can not use it anymore.
Sunshine isn't an option, because no system is up and running. XTC2Clip is too expensive to get the HTC in S-OFF Mode. There isn't an other method at this time, right?
I can only send it to the RUU Service, but I am from Germany.
Maybe here is someone near Düsseldorf who can S-OFF my device with his XTC2Clip?
Thanks

Unless your phone is S-OFF you can't use that RUU. It's a "combined" one which means it's custom made and not signed by HTC. S-ON phones only accept files which are signed by HTC. Btw.: That's the reason why you need S-OFF for Sneakyghost's firmware packs, too.

I had an ATT phone that was been flashed to the developers version. I HAD s-off and an unlocked bootloader.
I was in the process of modifying the CID and MID to match the ATT version of the phone so I could RUU the phone back to ATT. I accidentally set the wrong CID of DWS_0001 as I typed a D instead of a C. My MID is OPJA11000 which I luckily got correct.
Thinking I had the correct CID I relocked the bootloader and turned S back on. I then when to run the RUU for ATT and of course it failed.
My big problem is the RUU wiped out my recovery partition and now get Recovery Partition not found.
To correct the issue I went to re-flash my unlock code that I had saved when I origionally unlocked the bootloader but received an oem unlock turn off error when doing so.
I now have a phone that is on a stock developer rom, has no recovery, has a bad CID, and will not boot as it has a Software status: Modified flag. I can access the download, RUU, and bootloader menus.
I tried an RUU.zip with the following file and had no success: RUU_HIMA_UL_L51_SENSE70_ATT_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.11.617.15_Radio_01.01_U11440601_76.03.50611G_F_release_445910_signed_2_Rom
Down to the 500$ question, is there a way to reset the modified flag to boot into the os so I can check OEM unlock, is there a way to OEM unlock from the download, bootloader menues, or is there a way to force an RUU to run no matter the CID? The only other option I can think of is there a way to reflash/unflast the unlock_code.bin?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Is an XTC2Clip or Java Card my only solution?
You should try getting a new unlock token, I'm not sure it'd work but what else is there to lose? I also am not sure it'd be different than the original.
Just saw that you were unable to even try unlocking it, sorry sir

I would but I am unable to do so thanks to the OEM unlock option that is in the developer menu that I cant boot to to check.
Maybe you could just send it back like that? I myself can't think of anything to get you out of the situation you're in. I'm sorry :/

I'm guessing they will charge me full price (500$) for the advanced replacement due to the software issue now present. :/
To be honest if this was not fixable I'd rather see if I can return the advanced replacement itself and see if they will only charge me for shipping. Ill then just work on my cracked nexus till the new ones come out.
Im currently trying to get an RUU.zip file for 3.35.617.16 but cant seem to save the rom.zip file from the .exe with out it being corrupt. I've reading that you can modify the android-info.txt file and put in your own CID and MID numbers. In not 100% sure this will work even if I can successfully modify the android-info.txt.
I was able to repair one of the rom.zip files but the android-info.txt is completely blank.
Can anyone provide me with a template of a good android-info.txt file so I can recreate mine or even modify a 3.35.617.16 .zip file for me to see if its flash able with locked bootloader and S-on?
I don't think it'll work because it's modified, but I could be wrong. What were you exchanging it for , if you don't mind me asking?

I need to put in the CID of DWS_0001 and MID of OPJA11000 as it keeps failing the device check.
I figured it would need signing but Im trying for anything right now.

Also it's 0PJA, the digit not letter. I wish you luck and I wish I could help

What you're trying to do is impossible with S-ON. RUUs are encrypted and therefore can only get unzipped by special methods*. That's why so many programs state they were corrupt although they're not. Therefore chances are high that the zip files you extracted are totally fine.
If you unzip them and re-zip them you break the encryption and the signature and a S-ON phone will never accept such a modified RUU which lacks the correct signature.
Try to find someone with a java card or an xtc clip. That way you might be able to re-S-OFF the phone and from there on you can correct the CID using fastboot.
* Latest 7-zip is capable of unzipping them with right click > 7-zip > open (the second one from above not the first) > #.

Thanks grim for the example!
My phone will not see the zip unless it is OPJA. If it has a zero it boots to normal downloader stating no file found.

Yeah sadly that's what I figured with the zip. I only continued to try because I was only getting Android-info errors and not zip errors.
I did message one of the members that is listed on the Verizon form but I have not received a response yet. It was just yesterday so I just need to wait. But do you have any members you would recommend?

In that case you didn't only mess up the CID. Normally it has to be 0PJAIMG not OPJAIMG.

@efrant owns a java card if I'm not mistaken. However he's not living in the US so I'm not sure whether he's able to help you.

Unfortunately one cannot remote S-OFF with a clip or java card, as it needs to be plugged into the phone. You either need to find someone locally or send to someone with a card.

I didn't change anything else besides the MID and CID. The only other thing that was done was attempting to flash the unlock code. I was running debloated stock developer prior to all of this. After changing the above I attempted to flash the RUU and that's it. Not sure how that would of been changed.

Yeah I would rather not ship my phone overseas to get fixed. The problem is no one was listed in Colorado on the thread so I still will probably have to ship it to someone in the states.
Would it be worth me trying to just buy one for myself? My biggest hesitation for doing this is there appears to be a lot of fakes on the web.

Not sure what "worth it" would be for you, but I can tell you the $179 clip from CellCorner here is genuine: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B012T05MPG?ref=olp_product_details. They are an official distributor.

If you misspelled the MID while you changed it you might have found the culprit.

Ahhhhhhh!!!! That makes since. Didn't realise that's where it pulled it from.
Well, looks like my MID is wrong too. [emoji21]

Well the phone is off to Ohap. He/she stated they could fix the CID and MID. Will update when I get it back.
SHE LIVES!!!!!! Ohap was able to unlock and s-off to get the phone booting again. I have correctly modified the CID and MID back to AT&T standards and successfully run the RUU. Now just cant figure out why the software status modified flag is still present. Starting a new thread for that. Thanks everyone for the help!!!!
