You need the stock ROM (and no root) and stock recovery to OTA.

Hey guys,
I got myself an HTC ONE M8 last saturday and noticed i couldn't write to my SD card with non-google apps.
So i decided to install another ROM. The Android Revolution HD 22.1 to be exact.
However, since i'm a complete noob, i did not check if the firmware matches. Which it doesn't.
When entering fastboot it's says my 'OS' is 1.54.161.10 , but Android Revolution HD 22.1 needs 3.xx.xxx.xx right?
Now i tried flashing another firmware but that didn't work. First i got error 42 because the CID didn't match. (it's VODAPE17)
i added that CID to the android-info.txt inside the firmware.zip and got rid of error 42.
Now i getting error 12. According to Sneakyghost:
For Error 12 “signature fail" do:
- might indicate that a signed firmware package is required. This would only happen with S-ON phones though.
Does this mean i need to get my phone S-OFF with sunshine, or is there another way to fix this problem? ( I already tried firewater, didn't work)
I don't mind going back to the original M8 ROM. I just want to get rid of all this trouble
Thanks!

You should post the solution, for the benefit of others.
I assumed you did s-off? Otherwise, you can't flash another CID's firmware.
Hello!
I recently bought a HTC One m8 used. Sadly i did not check up on the Software and it was pre-rooted and had some older version of Viper Rom on it (2.7 i think). It was also s-on and had that bug (i believe it was a TWRP one) so it would not show me the CID nor the current version it was on. So my thought was that id like to initially get to the point where i would recieve OTA Updates again so i could update the base system to install any ROM id like. After doing research for hours and trying various stuff it seemed i could not get back to stock without the CID. So what i initially did then was use Method 2 described in this thread to Upgrade the Firmware which is now 3.28.401.9. I then change the CID to the google OTA Update one and installed the Google Play Edition Rom. The ROM was kinda buggy and did not work properly tho (i assume its still an issue that the underlying Firmware is not up-to-date enough) so i went back, changed the CID to HTC__001 and installed the stock 3.28.401.9 Rom + Recovery hoping the OTA Updates would come. It has not yet happened and i am not sure it will.
So here is my question: Will OTA Updates come if my initial CID does not match the CID i currently have even if i set it with fastboot? Is there a way for me to figure out my initial CID at this point? All i really want are working OTA Updates, after that i can install any ROM anyway, but this seems to elude me.
Thanks you!
Best Regards

as far as I know the stock 3.28.401.9 Rom + Recovery is the newest version. Your not getting updates because their are none

That makes me happy to hear. I'll just wait and hope for an early Lollipop then. Thank you!

I do see a 3.29.401.9 firmware but I think it was a small OTA fix
try pushing your date ahead and trying to find it
hello, some days ago i found that update is available on the htc RUU webpage from my 1.32.401.15 but no OTA update is shown on my device. my question is, if it's possible to update it without wiping data with RUU update? i just want something like OTA update.

Are you s-off? If not, you either need to s-off or wait until a RUU for your carrier and model is released.
There is more information about updating your firmware in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/firmware-t3068243
I bought a new HTC one M9 smart phone,
Software Number: 1.10.706.2
Android Version: 5.0.2
I tried to update the software directly from the phone, but it said that no updates available
I switched to
htc .com/us/support/htc-one-m9/news/
and I downloaded the latest RUU from HTC official site in order to update the phone's software
I followed the instructions under "Manual system update instructions" in the above mentioned link, but when the RUU starts the update progress, the ERROR 132: SIGNATURE ERROR pops up and the process is aborted.
How can I fix this error to complete the software update process?

did you able to fix? i am getting it with my tmobile variant
Signature errors usually mean you need to download it again due to the file somehow becoming corrupt.
Beamed in by telepathy.
The lowest publicly available firmware for the M9 was 1.32.x and I haven't seen the SKU 706 in connection with the M9, before. Therefore, I'm not sure whether the OP actually owns a M9...
And aside from what got written by shivadow that error occurs if you try to update a M9 via RUU from firmware 3.x to firmware 4.x. As explained in the ReadMe thread the encryption keys of the older firmware versions aren't compatible with the newer ones.
HTC M8 unlocked Android 5.0.1 says "There are no updates available for your phone"
So, I have an unlocked HTC M8 (S-ON) with latest custom TWRP recovery that I wanted to use with HTC's original ROM. So I downloaded and flashed through TWRP a ROM called One_M8_4.16.401.10_stock_system_dump.
Everything worked great and phone runs on HTC's official (hope so) ROM BUT it doesn't' give an update and we all know that there's a MM version out there with Sense 7.0.
I don't know what additional information you would like me to provide you with so you can help me out.
Thanks in advance.
I think I remember that stock dump. But I have no idea if it meets all the requirements to get the OTA notification. Even if it did (receive the notification), you would still need to re-install stock recovery to actually install the OTA (having TWRP installed will cause the install to fail).
Either flash the MM Euro RUU using these downloads and instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6
Or follow the whole process to properly return to stock, and OTA: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
