How to fix Error 132: Signature Error during Rom Update - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a new HTC one M9 smart phone,
Software Number: 1.10.706.2
Android Version: 5.0.2
I tried to update the software directly from the phone, but it said that no updates available
I switched to
htc .com/us/support/htc-one-m9/news/
and I downloaded the latest RUU from HTC official site in order to update the phone's software
I followed the instructions under "Manual system update instructions" in the above mentioned link, but when the RUU starts the update progress, the ERROR 132: SIGNATURE ERROR pops up and the process is aborted.
How can I fix this error to complete the software update process?

did you able to fix? i am getting it with my tmobile variant

Signature errors usually mean you need to download it again due to the file somehow becoming corrupt.
Beamed in by telepathy.

The lowest publicly available firmware for the M9 was 1.32.x and I haven't seen the SKU 706 in connection with the M9, before. Therefore, I'm not sure whether the OP actually owns a M9...
And aside from what got written by shivadow that error occurs if you try to update a M9 via RUU from firmware 3.x to firmware 4.x. As explained in the ReadMe thread the encryption keys of the older firmware versions aren't compatible with the newer ones.

unofficial software

Hello,
I bought my HOX, 2 months ago and after I heard about a new software update I tried to update it normally but couldn't find a "software update" option, so I contacted the htc official website and they asked me to provide them with my "software number", which I kindly did and later they replied that I have installed an unofficial software. - although I bought it with this software already installed- and I should contact the taiwan htc branch cause my phone is manufactured in taiwan.
Please can you help me step by step and in plain english on how I can retrieve my official software in order to be able to update my phone ?
A new phone cannot come with an unofficial software, better that you go back to the place where you purchased it. You may in trouble later for warranty issues.
To install the official software
1. Find your CID
2. Download the latest RUU for your CID
3. Lock your bootloader and run the RUU and you will be restored to the official software
You need fastboot/adb for doing these, do a search
So my cid is htc_621...how can I download the ruu for my cid
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Help a rookie
please help me.
The software number installed in my device is : BoxmaX.ONEX.ARA.v6.0
all i want is to restore my original software number: 2.17.709.7
so that i can be able to update my software normally
please guide me through the steps plus provide me with the suitable recovery file
and the suitable ruu concidering my cid : 621

Cant update HTC One M9 Developer Edition from Marshmallow to Nougat

Hello guys,
I just got a brand new HTC One M9 Developer Edition. It has Marshmallow version 3.35.617.12.
I see that Nougat already rolled out for some variants, so i was expecting to have the update available for my model since it is a "developer/unlocked" version... However, there are no updates available when clicking on Settings -> About -> Software update. I went to HTC website and found that there is a Nougat release for this model, version 4.23.617.1.
First i tried to update using the RUU exe downloaded from the HTC link above, but i got the error 132 (signature error).
Then i tried to update downloading the .zip file from "androidfilehost" website, placing it on SDCard and rebooting into download mode, but i got the message "ZIP error". I tried with two different files, and both resulted on same error.
My last try was to download an OTA from "androidfilehost" website, place it on the SDCard, reboot into recovery mode and select to apply update from SDCard. This time, i got the message "fingerprint error".
When i boot into download mode, i get:
*** LOCKED ***
htc_himaulatt PVT S-OFF
CID-BS_US002
I checked the IDs using fastboot and got this:
modelid: 0PJA11000
cidnum: BS_US002
I checked these IDs using a table that i found on another post, and they are correct. So, as far as i understand, these updates should be compatible with my phone.
Am i missing something? I appreciate if somebody can give me a hint.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, you can only update from Marshmallow to Nougat via the OTA. This and the reasons for it are explained in the readme thread.
I wonder if it would be worthwhile to flash the marshmallow RUU and check for updates then. It may be that something is goofy on your current setup - a RUU will reset your phone and perhaps clear out whatever issue is preventing your phone from seeing the OTA.
Hey, thanks for the tip. I managed to update successfully. Here is what i had to do:
1) Updated to the latest Marshmallow release using "0PJAIMG_HIMA_UL_M60_SENSE70_ATT_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_3.35.617.31.zip" on SDCard and booting on download mode.
2) Updated to Nougat using "OTA_HIMA_UL_N70_SENSE80_ATT_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_4.14.617.6_R-3.35.617.31_release_490897lkj8xif5v3eoiykd.zip" on SDCard and booting on recovery mode -> Apply update form SD Card.
3) Updated to latest Nougat using "RUU_HIMA_UL_N70_SENSE80_ATT_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_4.30.617.2.exe"
Curiously, after step 1 and 2 i tried to check if there is a software update available on "settings -> about -> software update", but on both steps it says that there is no update available...
Thank you very much!
Easiest way is flashing nougat firmware.zip first then do your desired update option.

Hmm. I'm wondering about this upgrade path. According to the readme thread:
Flippy498 said:
It seems like HTC changed its encryption keys between firmware 3.x and 4.x. Therefore, you cant flash 4.x RUUs if your phone is currently using a 3.x firmware. [emphasis added] You either need to flash a NoWipe/Full-Wipe Firmware Pack beforehand (only possible with S-OFF) or you need to use a 3.x RUU for the same SKU and install the 4.x OTA, afterwards.

It sounds like you've got the Nougat software (woohoo!) but I'm wondering if the path you've taken means something didn't get installed that may be necessary in the future. Or maybe you somehow had the Nougat firmware but a Marshmallow OS. It's beyond me, but exceptions make me nervous and what you've described sounds rather exceptional.
But hey, if it's performing as expected, great! I'm glad it has (apparently) worked out. Enjoy Nougat!
@side_flip15: But that's not possible with S-ON.
@computerslayer: He did what I wrote in my ReadMe thread. He installed a 4.x OTA for updating the encryption keys and then a 4.x RUU. (Well, not exactly what I wrote since I personally don't recommend flashing OTAs manually if you can't install them via the software update function of the stock rom but it looks like the flashing process was successful.) I don't know what you expect to be missing...
OTAs are incremental. That means they can only be used on one specific firmware version. If he had no problems with manually flashing the OTA then he was using the correct initial firmware. RUUs on the other hand contain everything: the whole firmware + the system. Therefore the phone has everything that it needs, now.
When I wrote that part of the RUU section there only was one update for firmware 4.x. However, at this point HTC's already released some more 4.x updates. And just like on pre-4.x firmware you can skip installing several OTAs by using a RUU for the latest version.
@Flippy498 yes not possible on s-on devices. I'm just basing my comment on @Spike_Fire's situation.
My bad. I missed the fact that his phone is S-OFF... :silly:

This is what I was misunderstanding. I interpreted the section I quoted earlier as meaning the 4.x firmware was so unique (regarding the whole encryption key piece) that it absolutely couldn't be installed except by OTA. Thank you for the correction.

I'm in the exact same position as you were. Plus i'm a total noob since this is my first droid. Where did you download the 3 files necessary to update to nougat? Also is the file in step 3 the latest nougat firmware still and is the search for updates problem solved?

Hello mate,
You can find the files on androidfilehost.
The file of step 3 is not the latest anymore. I guess the latest is 4.30.617.12. You can download it directly from HTC website: htc.com/us/support/rom-downloads.html#unlocked]
Tip: currently im using LeeDroid ROM ported from HTC10 (LeeDroid_10). There is thread for it on the main page of this forum. This ROM is fantastic. It keeps the main cosmetics of the stock HTC rom, adding several improvements over the original M9 ROM (camera app mainly IMO). I may give it a try.
Regarding the automatic system updates (settings -> about -> ...), unfortunately it didnt work even after installing the RUU firmware (which supposedly should bring the device to the absolute stock condition)... it simply says that "there is no update available...".
Good luck!

Hi,
Same here regarding the no update available. Thanks for the tip, i'll take it into consideration. Firstly upgrade to stock nougat, finally, thx to you. I've been looking forever for solutions. I kept on getting signature error with ruu files from the htc site. I'm now on the latest marshmallow after reading your solution because it didn't even find that via settings. I will try to upgrade to nougat tomorrow and if that works i'll look into leedroid. I gotta say jailbroken ios is easier but Android is the best, much more freedom. Thanks again!

Error [132]: Signature Error T-Mobile

Hey, I have a stock HTC T-Mobile M9 5.1 on 2.7.531.6.
For months I have tried updating this thing via OTA (No Updates Available) and through the manual update to Nougat 4.30.617.12. For some reason I keep getting error error [132]: Signarure error. What am I doing wrong??????? Can someone help me please!?
UPDATE: I have sucessfully updated from 2.7.531.6 Android Lollipop to 3.39.531.41. Now that I'm trying to update from 3.39.531.41 to 4.27.531.6 I still get the same [132] error.
How did you update from 2.7 to 3.39? I can't get it pass 2.7 and having exactly the same error 132, even with the misspelled word (Signarure) in there (I can't believe HTC allows software with misspelled texts come out to public)
Please read the ReadMe thread. It explains why you can't flash 4.x RUUs on non-4.x firmwares.
That's not the only typo in HTC software. If you manually flash RUUs via fastboot/HTC_fastboot you'll get asked to "flush" the RUU immediately, again, and not to "flash" it. But let's be honest, the majority of HTC users doesn't even know what a RUU is. Therefore, I can understand quite well why HTC doesn't bother correcting those mistakes. The RUUs are working nonetheless...

Help to return to stock RUU

Hi,
I'm totally new to this and I'm looking for help.
I have a HTC One (M9), unlocked. I realised since I got the handset (insurance replacement in 2016) I've never had an OTA update. I contacted HTC support who advised that I am running unofficial software and that is why I cannot get OTA updates. I've asked them to elaborate on what is "unofficial" about it as I have never rooted the handset or messed around in any way. They couldn't elaborate and advised I should send it to them to be flashed (at cost, as it's out of warranty).
Anyway, I want to put my handset into a condition where I can receive OTA updates & also ensure that I benefit from the latest software updates so I started looking into how I could do this. As a noob to Android the easiest method seemed to be via RUU exe. I've downloaded 2 different RUU's from HTC website but both errored with "incorrect version" when I tried to install. I then downloaded a ZIP which I followed the instructions to boot to recovery & install from phone storage, this also errored with "cannot find files".
As above I've tried going from Android v5 to v7 and that failed, I don't know whether I had the wrong RUU or I need to upgrade to v6 first.
I'm in the UK with I presume a UK handset but the RUUs were downloaded from htc.com not htc.com/uk as the UK one doesn't seem to provide this.
So long story short I'm looking for help getting the correct RUU for my handset and I'm having no luck. I'd appreciate any advice given.
HTC One M9
CID: HTC_001 (WWE)
Android: 5.0.2
HTC Sense: 7.0
SW: 1.32.401.17
S-ON
Cheers
Breezo
Firmware 1.32.401.17 only got distributed in one single country (I always forget which one it was - it definitely wasn't the UK). Therefore, the combination of that version together with the HTC__001 CID can only get achieved by tinkering with the phone.
You're actually using an official stock rom but you can't update your phone since the UK never was meant to receive this specific version and/or its OTAs.
You should be able to "return" to 1.32.401.15 without much hassle by following one of the guides in the ReadMe thread. Even with S-ON this little downgrade should be possible (c.f. the RUU section of the ReadMe thread).
If flashing the 1.32.401.15 RUU fails you'll have no choice but unlocking the bootloader, getting root, setting the phone S-OFF and retrying to flash the RUU. All needed steps are explained in the ReadMe thread, as well.

Hi Flippy498,
Thanks very much for the response and advise.
I've no idea how it ended up like that. I can only assume as it was an insurance replacement that it was initially branded then flashed incorrectly before it was issued to me.
I'll try your suggestions over the weekend.
Thanks again for the knowledge, its appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Flippy498,
That worked perfectly thanks very much for your help. Took the software down from .17 to .15 and OTA updates kicked in immediately.
Now running on Android 7.0
Cheers again

Deffo not a UK phone. We went from 5.0.1 out of the box straight to 6.0.
I'm pretty sure that UK received Android 5.1, as well. No variant of the M9 skipped firmware 2.x.
Firmware 1.x = Android 5.0.2
Firmware 2.x = Android 5.1
Firmware 3.x = Android 6.0
Firmware 4.x = Android 7.0
Since the UK M9 is the "normal" European unbranded version (SKU 401) it received the following versions:
1.32.401.8
1.32.401.15
1.40.401.8
2.10.401.1
2.10.401.180*
3.35.401.12
3.35.401.32
4.14.401.7
4.28.401.3
In addition to that there are:
1.32.401.6 (a pre-release firmware shown on the MWC)
1.32.401.17 (which got distributed in only one country)
* Normally the three numbers behind the last dot indicate a beta firmware. Since the Nougat update couldn't be applied in one single update they had to distribute this version, as well.
