Why are NFC phones still fairly rare? - NFC Hacking

Hi,
Hopefully you'll know what's behind this? Nfc has been around for a while and uses are kicking in.....contactless payments being the main thing I see. So, why doesn't every phone have NFC?!
Am I missing something? Apple Pay is here. Google Pay is warming up. Surely NFC is about to become a much bigger thing but phone options are still very limited. What's your thoughts?!

Because only a few people really want it. I rarely saw complaint about the lack of NFC on reviews, or sometimes it's only a minor detail.

A lack of awareness rather than a lack of will, I'd say. Most of my friends have gone "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS WITCHCRAFT" when they see me sharing something with my girlfriend via NFC.
It's super useful once there's a utility, really.

Has this been confirmed or is it only a rumor that the Epic Touch will not have NFC?
If no NFC, it's a deal breaker - not buying. 2 years without a new technology with a lot of promise is too long.
If it does have, definitely buying.

No NFC support...sorry , I don't know why you would make it a deciding factor considering there is very very very little support for NFC so far.

Preferences I suppose. I'm getting the E4GT regardless of NFC because, like you said, the NFC support is very little so far. I haven't seen or even heard of anyone I know that even used it. When the technology become more widespread then it'll be a game-changer.
Note: It also doesn't have WiDi technology in it either.

Here's what I'm going to say about this: I'm still waiting for confirmation from our samsung rep regarding a question I asked her the other day. (I work as a tech at a corporate store).
What should be known: the "confirmation" that the epic 4g touch lacks NFC support is derived from the fact that there were no NFC related system processes running in the background when a couple of curious previewers decided to take a peek. As far as I know and from everything I've read, there still hasn't been a claim made, nor evidence of, that the Epic 4g touch is actually lacking the hardware for it.
So I asked her point blank and she didn't know the answer: is the phone actually lacking the hardware for NFC or is the software to run it simply not included (yet)? I'm waiting for a reply, so stay tuned. Also, by tomorrow, I'll definitely be taking one apart for practice, and I'll do a little microchip research to see what I can find on my own.
EDIT: also, read my words carefully. I said "as far as I know", meaning that there may have been a post somewhere that I never read that shows proof of lack-of-hardware, so if there is, I'm sorry, but please post it here

im not concerned about NFC. If and when the technology becomes more widespread, then ill think about getting something else

I know there's not much use for it yet, but I think it'll start to take off late this year early next year. I'd rather wait a few months for e.g. the Nexus Prime or whatever, though my old school Moment is really sucking these days.
It just seems silly they omitted it when it's included on the same phone on other carriers. I was hoping it was something like the poster above stated, and it's just not software enabled yet or something.
I'd like a Windows 7 phone actually, but those suffer same issue. I guess I'll just wait a few more months and see what shakes out.

Why is Front Facing Camera a huge deal?

To some people on the internet, Nokia's lack of a front-facing camera is a deal breaker. But tell me why? It has yet become common-use and people, for the most part only use it a few times for novelty purposes. I would understand not getting the lumia 800 because the screen is too small, but stop talking about FFC unless you can see a practical and consistent use for it.
Besides, Nokia compensates in other ways. It has Nokia Maps and its suppose to be the best built-in maps. No competition. Now that has a practical use. It's has a top-notch camera as well. Dual-LED with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens. However, I heard it's not on par with the Titan though.

It's a nice feature to have (e.g. seeing gf/wife/kids while on the road, etc) but yeah many people don't need it.
However, it's a check-the-box kind of feature. When your main competitors in the iPhone and the Android superphones have it, you better damn well make sure your flagship Windows Phone has it

I agree that it's a nice feature to have. It's a must for video calling, though.

it all comes down to features that are important to the end user, while i'm in the FFC is not all that important camp, there are others who might use it a lot on their current phone, or have a need and use for it, and to them, the loss of the FFC is a deal breaker.
the part that perplexes me is that the N9 has one, which makes the virtually identical 800 not having one irritating.
personally, i'm pretty let down by the 800, aside from the great industrial design, the rest of the phone seems pretty mediocre to me, but again, it's the stuff that the focus s and titan have that more fall into line with what i care about in my next phone which makes them better.
as far as why FFC could be a big deal, common reasons are long distance relationships (apple exploits the armed forces in their iphone4 ads, but it could also be people who travel a lot for business, in which a phone might be a more convenient way to see your loved ones when a laptop can be unweildly) the here and there instances when you need to show someone something, and a call or text won't do, etc.

It's not a big deal. I'm sure most people have complained about the screen size and storage, not the FFC. It's a case of ok if it's there, doesn't really matter if it's not.

Because some people what to video chat with loved ones, or it could be anybody really.
My last phone had one but I never used it. my new phone doesn't have one and I want one now and im not buying another phone without one now that most of my family has them
Just because its not important to you doesnt mean it isnt to other people and really I dont see why they took the ffc out to begin with, even HTC is adding them to their phones.

I think it's because people like to hold Microsoft to a higher standard. Apple and Google can mess up all they want but as soon as Microsoft does all the haters jump at it. The lack of FFC and dual core situation is no different.

Features, quite simply. While you, and admittedly I, do not use it (I don't, at all) we just acknowledge that many see this as a necessary - and at this point standard feature - that from here on out it should be present on any legitimately "high-end" phone. No questions, it should just be there. When Android phones started using it (and I'm aware they were around long before) people questioned it and their overall usefulness. It's obviously a well requested feature and should be as standard as an opposite facing camera, given the greater leaps made in video conferencing / chatting as of recent time.
Its not so much that it's a huge deal, but something that should just be standard.

It's mostly a gimmick IMO. People want it because it exists in other high end devices, so it makes their devices look worse without it.
I had 2 cell phones with front cameras and I only used that feature one time to test it for fun. I believe that not many people would want to hold their phone like a mirror and talk to their contacts with everyone around looking at their personal video calling.
It reminds me of personal assistants like Siri on the iPhone. Everybody likes them, but in the end they get used only inside the house for fun and sometimes away from other family members.
Front Cameras also raise the cost of a device without offering a great functionality.

I'd say, in the way I use my phones, that Nokia maps easily well and over compensates for the lack of FFC. However, I do wish the screen was 4inches ...

those of you saying it's no big deal.. you are quite ignorant. again, i'm one who would not use it (currently). but i know many who video chat all the time on their phone. if they currently are used to always video chatting, why would they get a phone without one. its very simple to see why many wouldn't even consider a phone without a FFC. it's all opinion guys.. just because you don't see the point in something doesn't mean it's pointless.

Not only that but MS just bought Skype video chat will be integrated at an OS level we want phones that will be ready for the inevitable.

I don't think comparing a camera to a display type is fair. I'm sure one could make the argument for both, why one is would seem of more use, but one is obviously a stronger mobile standard than the other and offers more legitimate use. One being directed more toward media intake, albeit in a smaller demographic, while the other appeals and offers to a larger demographic. I have rarely used mine, but it is entrely more productive than some display tech. Especially considering when you consider a form that doesn't fill a scale such as HD output does. That's exactly why 3D TVs haven't made that jump yet.

You can't compensate that. Its a missing hardware component. Its not like using opera mobile because a stock browser is missing hardware acceleration. If its not there its not there.
All Tablets, higher iOS/WP/Android devices, high end Pmps (galaxy player/ITouch) have it. Most mid range phones are now shipping with vga front cams. Not putting it there is denying your users a whole means of communicating and making your phones less useful to business users who need stuff like WebEx.
However go ahead and downplay it.

Beside video calling it is also great if you want to take pictures with yourself in the picture because you can actually see on the screen what you are shooting.
Anyway, right now I think it is not so important because there is no skype app available, but if Skype gets integrated like Facebook the FFC could really become a deal breaker on the Nokia 800.

In my own case, I would find FFC to be really useful. I may be in the minority, but I was using video-calling over 3g with my old Touch Diamond2. In addition to using it with a mobile, I quite often use Skype to stay in touch with family, both extended family and my own family when I'm working away.
I recently had to travel for work, and due to corporate software policy, was unable to have Skype on my work laptop. This mean I carried an additional (old and bulky) laptop with me on my travels. I personally would have found it so much more convenient to simply be able to make the call on my mobile.
I simply assumed that with MS purchasing Skype, and Nokia buying into WP7, there'd be no question of FFC missing from the latest batch of phones. I was about to go with Nokia for past history of good quality hardware, good cameras etc. And then I found out that the memory would still be limited (I didn't realise how much of the 8Gb on my current Omnia 7 is reserved for the OS/apps, etc) *and* FFC was missing.
Now, in the grand scheme of things, these might not matter to the majority of users. But I miss having my favourite albums on tap, and the ability to video call on those occasions I wish to do so. And sadly, I've not ordered the new Nokia phones and have decided to hang on to the Omnia 7 until next year, when Nokia are due to release more handsets.
Slightly off topic - but regarding the memory, I used to have a 2Gb SD card in my TD2. This was more than enough for me to carry around my albums, but now I have less albums on an 8Gb Omnia 7! (Mind you, I have far more photos due to the ease of use of taking pictures ) I don't fully understand why MS decided to control the use of expandable memory in such a way. I can see why, but in my mind, I keep asking why people aren't allowed to add memory to suit their own needs.
Nonetheless, apart from the two issues mentioned above, I'm really happy with my phone, quite often demonstrating it to my iPhone/Android-toting work buddies. I'd just really like to be able to tell them one day that it also has Flash player support, expandable memory and video calling built in

Opinion: Sounds legit. Just wanted to share the news. Nothing official of course.

I guess these "high positioned personnel" are the ones who pushed for batteries to be made by Samsung SDI. What makes it even more disappointing is, the replacement units are still SDI batteries. While we've heard nothing from the China region units with ATL batteries.
Samsung should shut their factory down and just stick with the winning formula.

How do you know this? You don't. We don't know the cause yet.

Well! Tell them to fu** ing explain to us what was it they messed up so bad to infringe our personal property, safety and make us a ton of expences we will never get back!! Tell them they should be convincingnus they are not incompetent to make electronisc anymore in the first place!!

Its not the batteries that are causing the exploding. Its the tweaking of the software that controls the processor to run fast charging. Samsung tried to get a faster charge than all previous devices and screwed the pooch on the software. They can probably issue a software/firmware update but people will not be happy and it may not be a permanent fix.
I have turned fast charging off via the cable and wireless. I have zero over heating problems, zero lag issues, phone is acting like a phone. the real catch is concealing it when traveling on a plane etc.... That is the hard part. I will probably turn my Note 3 into my travel device for music and games and such. Like a glorified Android iPod touch. Ill just turn disable to mobile data and phone stuff, hide the sim card removed icon.

My note 7's (both the original and the replacement) have worked basically perfectly. They don't overheat, don't lag, really not a single problem. The Note 7 is by far the best overall smartphone made to date. Best display, best display to overall size ratio, best camera, waterproof, etc. Only two issues I would say are the edge display which makes a tempered screen protector impossible and a so-so external speaker. And of course the kicker - the non-removable battery. Had they just made it with a removable battery this issue would have not been a phone-killer. It is sad that the best phone ever made to date is killed off like this. And we still have no definitive answer to what is the problem? Seems incomprehensible.

That sounds like speculation. These devices have been melting without being charged. We don't even know if Samsung knows what the actual problem is. Hopefully it all comes out so we get some reassurance about their next phones.

I read a lil bit ago that they didn't know what the actual problem was which is why they decided to kill it. They had over 100 people testing them round the clock and could not duplicate the issue of causing one to smoke/catch fire... of course though they were an anonymous
person close to the situation.

Look, I get it, I want to keep my phone as well, and I am not sure what I will do. But to fly with it, while you base the rest on rumors, is plain irresponsible. What you do at home is your business, but getting on a plane with several hundred passengers and a possibly defective phone isn't (there's literally no way for you to tell whether your phone is safe or not). Samsung did after all improve the replacements as they are reportedly catching fire without being charged.

First time Note buyer. What should I know or look for?

As the title says, this will be the first time I've purchased a Note phone. The last Samsung phone I've had was an S7. I've used Google, HTC, LG and even Blackberry, as well as iPhones. I've waited a while to upgrade and while I know there are the new iPhones and Pixels coming out soon they just don't interest me. Pretty boring, actually.
That brings me to this phone - the Note 10+. I've seen the reviews and I've seen everyone saying stuff like "it's just an S10 with a pen", it doesn't have this or that, they kinda mailed it in etc etc. While it would normally turn me off to this phone there is something drawing me to it. I love the boxy look. I'm genuinely curious about using the S-Pen. The camera is one of the most important things for me , and yet, while not Pixel grade, I'm sure I'll be happy with it. Hell, I've been using a U11 and an iPhone 7 for the last year or so and I'm sure this will be an upgrade from those and I can just use the Google port as well.
Having said all that I figured this would be the best place to ask people what I can look forward to when I pick this up later today. Any tips or tricks I should know? Anything extra I can do with phone that maybe the general public or site or YouTuber might not know or mention. Any and all information will be very much appreciated and I look forward to see if and any developments happen here for the Note phone. Thanks! ?

What's silly is when people downplay a product's selling point simply because it doesn't appeal to them. I don't tell people interested in e bikes that "it's just a bike with a motor". That type of close minded perspective serves no purpose, and fails to sate the curiosity of (potential) buyers. This is aimed at those that write professionally, not you.
As I always tell people, the S Pen has its audiences. Whether they choose to acknowledge them is their prerogative. Anyway, the S Pen's accuracy and precision are in line with other pens like the Active 2, Bamboo, Asus, and Surface. I've used 2 of these (including S Pens since N4).
While rare, sometimes I need a digital signature for e docs. The S Pen allows me to write like I would on paper or a ntrig/wacom based panel. Now, anyone that has ever attended a conference knows that you can't make a ton of noise, since you should be courteous to whoever has the floor. In this case it makes sense to use your phone to take notes/questions and annotate pics taken of slides as you record audio. Another situation, and likely the most obvious, is drawing. You can make things that achieve parity with the pens I mentioned earlier. Ofc skill level is another story...
Last but not least, the S Pen has other features like remote pics for vloggers and various air commands for things. If you consider what I've written, it makes sense that journalists overlook the S pen. People that rely on Notes were never going to find contentment with an S10, and yet they've managed to fuse the different audiences.

What to watch for? Probably an erection lasting more than 4 hours.
It's a pretty phenomenal phone line. You'll probably be on Note phones for a while...

Beware of the advertised battery capacity. It more than likely won't be the 4300mAh Sam is claiming. Mine is 4170 which is the minimum capacity tested.

Don't expect any timely updates. OS updates will come 7-8 months after Google release of it's anything like previous notes.

Noted. I will see what it's about. But that will still be the biggest battery I will have had in a phone so interested to see how well it goes considering the big screen and amount playing I like to do with my phone's.

My Note9 was AMAZING for battery and the battery is smaller. The screen is bigger on the 10+, but I suspect the increase in battery will offset it. Plus the improvements with the CPU... I'm thinking battery life will be spectacular. As in... I only charge at night. Which is all I care about, personally. ?

Forget this phone, and android, moving to iPhone

I've been been on android since the g1 days, got every new android phone that everyone said was great. I had the first galaxy phone, the original nexus 1, the nexus 5, the htc one, the oneplus 3t, even note phones. Today I decided to leave this inferior product behind. How delusional have I been saying android is better all this time. Here's the thing, iPhone works. I can no longer connect to WiFi networks anymore because of some security update. I am still pissed I paid for a camera I can't use. I'm tired of missing calls because this phone decides to put itself on do not disturb. The final straw that broke the camels back is location settings and privacy. Apple decided to let people protect their privacy, google is actively trying to stop people from protecting their privacy. Take for example find my phone which is useless now unless you have location turned on at all times. WHY......? I am able to turn on location remotely on Samsung phones but here is google blocking your from doing it. If you loose your phone your freaked unless you let google know exactly where you are 24 hours a day. Forget GOOGLE, Forget ANDROID, Forget ONEPLUS!

The final straw that broke the camels back is location settings and privacy. Apple decided to let people protect their privacy, google is actively trying to stop people from protecting their privacy. Take for example find my phone which is useless now unless you have location turned on at all times. WHY......? I am able to turn on location remotely on Samsung phones but here is google blocking your from doing it. If you loose your phone your freaked unless you let google know exactly where you are 24 hours a day. Forget GOOGLE, Forget ANDROID, Forget ONEPLUS!

Technically if I hacked your google account, I know is where you are.
So that might be good.
Otherwise of location, you can disable every app instead of the system applications related to find my phone.
I use an iPhone and I can say I support the only use location while using the app and such features.
But apple fracks up in regards to downloading stuff and is more restrictive than android.
Plus my iPhone apps are all 110 mb lmao, my mobile data will finish soon if I download anything.
NOT TO MENTION THE 1GB CACHE in a single APP THAT TAKES UP MY PHONE STORAGE IN AN APP, for 0 reasons idk why there's that much cache.

A steeper learning curve but with many more options. I would have paid $400 more for 512gb of iPhone memory and not had the additional 1tb expansion capacity. All my PCs are dual drive or higher with 1GB of storage or more.

Particularly, I don't like your attitude about the location tracking, like Apple is actually better, well I'm here to tell you they're not. Have you heard of Wi-Fi scanning? It allows Wi-Fi networks to track your location more accurately than GPS quite often because of Wi-Fi triangulation. And you can't turn that off on iPhone, even when you turn Wi-Fi off, your phone is triangulating Wi-Fi letting Apple always know your location, and on addition, Google because most of those routers report WiFi info to Google.
If you want a privacy respecting location tracking tool, like the Find My apps, you shouldn't be relying on your OEM anyways, whether it be Google or Apple or Samsung.
As someone who's used both platforms, I wouldn't blame you if you use an iPhone and like the usability more, but your rage induced reasoning here doesn't seem all that informed or thought out.

Well, Seconding this post. I agree, in my latent opinion it is clear that both platforms have pros and cons respectively.

The iPhone settings are a mess... they give me a headache. Way too dumbed down.
Plus I doubt there's a package disabler that works on a stock iPhone

Then there's the emulators, root tools, mods, ability to freely copy things to and from your device, I can send an entire folder structure over android beam, my choice, my way.

Well that's what 2 factor authentication is for. I have had that active for years. Whats the point of disabling access to other applications when applications can just keep tabs on other applications. How about battery life? This has irked me ever since android removed the option to turn off GPS and leave location on. They obviously did it for a reason, to get more accurate information about you. BTW it has been reported that google actively tries to bury and confuse users about its location settings. I'm not worried about my data, plan I don't pay it, but if I did what good does it do me since I can't connect to any enterprise wifi. I spend half of my day at work unable to connect to WiFi an relying solely on data.

I gave up on Samsung too, I hate their update lottery. My favorite computer is also my phone that's why wifi is important to me. I used to print documents straight from my phone at work because it is faster. I can't do that anymore. Unless I downgrade to a more unsecure version of android. Whats the point of security updates if I have to downgrade making my phone more vounarable just to get basic functionality back.

Lets assume I'm not a noob......... Let's assume I can actually configure phones to my liking like I have been doing so since the very first android came out. Lets assume I have been here for the whole ride since cyanogenmod. Configuration is not the issue. I would not care if it was just google tracking me. I can disable location history but that's not the issue here. Your making this issue about one thing. Read my post its an aggregate of things. Again this is basic functionality. Sony got sued for removing the ability to load linux to its system, here is oneplus completely dissabling and rendering useless something they charged money for.

Each Jailbreak depend a hack / breach, so each time you must wait for a jalbreak for a new iOS version or iOS fixed version (Apple block each time Jailbreak on new version). Above all even with Jailbreak there a lot of things not availbable on iOS, and the first reason is now all iOS users don't care Jailbreak... They want the lastest iOS version without headache.
For Android, Root is for a lot of OEM granted/allowed (OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, etc...) and don't void warranty, only Desimlock tools / Changing IMEI void warranty.
This OEM share their model kernel source and root can be granted by simply patching boot and/or using a custom recovery like TWRP.

Well were often stuck with what android gives us. Like updates, my sons g6 never got one. You complain that your stuck with what they give you but you are content with the mess android is accross its many vendors. It's been 13 years since android came out and every year a new plan to make updating easier. Remember project treble? All failed promises.

The security hype is just that. My 10+ Pie does fine in the real world. Same firmware/updates for the last 1.5 years.
Your mistake was updating.
I picked off a trojan preloader and a malware jpeg over a year ago, no damage.
That same malware likely breach the latest updated Pixel just as easily. In the last year zero breaches.
A phone is only as secure as the person who operates it. I don't use wifi and limit bt use in high usage areas because vulnerabilities in this OS... which also have never nailed me. Regardless all my data is redundantly safeguarded and a complete reload takes me about 2 hours with no internet because I have a SD card/data drive*. So even if I get nailed it's not going to eat too much time. I'm readily to reload *now* if need be.
*if that's compromised add another 5-6 hours to the reload time. Still no critital data loss.

11. Huawei P20 Pro - 2 days- 17 hours 37 minute's in one charge.
12. Use two SIM's one phone!
13. Install a third party application within 1 minute of opening your phone's box
14. Copy all your unofficial (now lost) music from your phone to a blank external drive.
15. Try to get help on XDA for your phone!
16. Move the clock
17. Make the phone louder
18. Connect to an android watch
19. Share screen on an average Android box
