1. How do I check to make sure the boot loader is unlocked / unlockable?
2. Also I guess I need to update it, the GUI looks different then my VS986 when I had it. The build version is: 5.1 - LMY47D. Guess I need to update?
3. What's the best way to root this now? I know there are many tutorials but not sure which to go with. I guess I need to unlock it first or it should be already? What's the process? Unlock, root? Or Root first or?
4. My white adapter to charge the phone isn't for an outlet, it plugs into this grey adapter which plugs into the outlet, and I guess that's fine if it charges the way it should. But the phone always turns on when I try and charge it, I can't charge it being off with this charging system. I guess I need to buy the actually white outlet adapter to charge it off?

1) go to LG site and see if you can unlock it.
2)IDK
3)Depends on #1
4) the charge while off is a kernel issue. The stock kernel obviously doesn't allow for charging while off. If you are able to unlock, look into a kernel that allows that.
Congrats. I'm still looking and waiting. I don't *want* to wait til after my son's wedding next month, but I have no choice. A 1600 mile round trip drive, plus all the grooms responsibilities have to come first. Were you able to get the seller to match the price? I'm jealous. ?
Try plugging in the charger, THEN powering the phone off.
That's what I have to do to charge my VS986 while powered off. If I power it off, then plug it in, it powers up again.

Hey guys, I probably have a pretty unusual question or rather observation. Sometime yesterday night when I connected the Galaxy Nexus to the power outlet it started to make a crackling noise. I immediately disconnected it but it already smelled like burnt plastic. As you can believe I was pretty shocked! Trying to turn on the phone worked flawlessly though, so I though, OK might have been my outlet and tried two different ones. Still to no avail, the phone works but won't charge.
I turned it off for the night and waited until the morning to try to connect it to my computer (thinking maybe it's the plug that's broken) and reset it to factory default. Big mistake! Windows pops up with a warning telling em that it detected a power surge on one of my USB ports, resulting in my phone still not charging, the USB port being broken (won't recognize my USB key anymore), and and the Micro-USB connector emitting some smoke after I unplug it from the Nexus.
Now, enough storytelling. Maybe you guys can help me with the mountain of questions I have after this episode:
A) Really, what happened here? I don't think it has something to do with the software side of it, can it? (eg Battery overloaded?) Then I would guess more people would have had the same problem... I'm running AOKP M3 and Franco Kernel 3.0.08-M1.
B) Did anyone have the same problem?
C) I guess it's unfixable from a software standpoint, so my only option would be to send it back to Amazon and hope they replace it. Any other ideas? I bought it at Amazon.de (Germany) but due to it having AOKP Rom and Franco Kernel installed getting a replacement might be difficult.
C) How do I get my USB port functioning again? It's a new notebook but I don't want to send it back for repairs as I bought it in Hong Kong (I have an international warranty though.) and need it to write my Thesis.
Update: Uninstalled and re-installed the USB drivers, that fixed the USB port.
Thanks for your time and hopefully help!

A) Sounds like a short circuit somewhere. My guess would be the connector or close to it.
B) I certainly didn't but I'm sure it's happened to someone.
C) Unroot and Relock and send it back to Samsung if Amazon doesn't take it back. I'm not sure about their return policy since it's a cellphone that is under warranty. May also depend how long ago you bought it.
The more I think about it I wonder if it's just the USB cable... Since you said the smoke came from the Micro-USB connector... Plug it back into the computer without the phone and see if you get the USB power surge thing again. There may just be a short in the cable.
Of course checking it with a multimeter would be safer, do you have one of those?
Or do you have another Micro-USB you can try charging the phone with?

The problem is that I can't even unroot it since it is not being recognized by the computer (and I get the power surge warning). I will try with the new cable, and then send it back even if it works. might give me problems further down the line if I don't.

I don't have a different cable (or multimeter) near me at the moment but will give an update as soon as I do. I didn't get the power surge warning when I just plugged in only the cable, but as there is no source that could draw power that seems likely to me.
P.s.: Just bought it in january so generally sending it back shouldn't be a problem - if I can get it unrooted.

Well that's "good" in that we know the cable isn't shorted. I thought maybe some pins or wires were touching inside the cable that would cause a short (+5VDC and GND) even without the cable being plugged into anything.
So it does look like the fault is in the phone somewhere... And that could be just about anything.
Being that it's Amazon they probably will just replace it and not even bother with checking for it being rooted - especially since you can say it's smoking. As far as I know only the carriers will turn on the phone and look it over (not to mention most Amazon employees wouldn't know root it it reached out of the phone and smacked them across the face). Other 3rd party stores just mark it as defective and put it in a box to send back. I'm not sure how Amazon's return process works though.
I had several problems with my EVO (speakers mostly) and had it rooted when I took it in. They just fixed it anyway and even told me they liked what I had done with it a few times.
Hey, just to give an update I didn't get a specific explanation but Amazon replaced the battery, cable & charger. Now its working again. No problems with it being rooted, they even left rooted but installed stock android & kernel.
I'm currently having this problem, i called google, and they transferred me to samsung. And their department that handles this issue is closed on weekends

any update? i'm having this problem aswell. my phone wont charge through the wall charger but will when connected to a computer... but when it's connected to the computer it says that my usb device (phone) has malfunctioned.
because of that "malfunction" i cant revert back to stock everything and relock everything to get it repaired with bell mobility.

when i sent them my phone i couldn't bring back to stock software but i still shipped it out either way, i actually got an email from samsung today saying a component has been replaced and being shipped out back to to me, so i guess they fixed it with it being rooted, so when i receive it ill let you know
Well I got back my phone today and its charging again. But they restored my phone back to factory setting. So I lost all my pics and phone didn't restore previous apps etc but oh well as long as they fixed it and no questions asked I'm happy

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I'm not exactly an electrical engineer. I was looking at buying one of these for my room: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/travelpower/e81a/ and it says it outputs at 2 amps. i notice the stock Samsung charger is 1 amp. Will I be doing any harm to my phone by using the wall outlet vs. my stock charger? Or will it detect it as a USB charger, charging it at a slower rate?
Ya it'll be fine, it says UP TO 2.1amps.
Also it says it charges all mobile phones that accept USB power.
yes it will work. I have a few of these installed in my house. Your device will only pull the amount of amps that it needs. The voltage is what you have to look out for...
it will work, but it is not up to the 2011 nec code as it doesn't have tamper resistant shutters, I would recommend this instead.
http://www.amazon.com/Cooper-Wiring-Devices-TR7740W-K-Combination/dp/B007NC5GI4
It works the same, is up to the latest electrical code, is cheaper and will work with a standard wallplate.
Thanks for the input everyone, I think i'm gonna spring for one (may not be the Thinkgeek one though, as the one cade80 posted and a few other's I've found are cheaper) at some point, just to cut some clutter from my bedroom a bit.

Although you lose 1 standard plug, the big plus is being able to use normal faceplates with it.

Be aware, this Cooper one is only 0.7A ... it won't charge an iPad 3 and is slower to charge then the OEM Samsung charger.

Good eye on that, depending on your needs this may outweigh the being up to current electrical codes.
most third party charger will not charge you samsung smartphone at full power.
to charge at full power you must shortcut middle pins.
"will not charge" - not correct, your phone reduce it
So I went ahead and decided to not spring for the ThinkGeek Charger, and instead bought one of these: http://www.lowes.com/pd_369050-6337...&pl=1¤tURL=/pl__0__s?Ntt=usb&facetInfo= and just put it in a standard plug to test it to make sure it worked. Well I plugged it in and the first thing I noticed was the GNex was taking a while to recognize the plug. Finally it started Charging (USB Though) which was OK with me. Well last night I plugged it in via my Samsung Charger to a standard power strip because I hadn't gotten around to installing the RCA plate yet. Well I woke up this morning and it was on like 50% power and wasn't charging. So I was like WTF. So I brought it into work with me this morning, and now when I plug the stock Samsung charger with the stock samsung cable into the wall, no charge. I tried plugging it in to my computer, and it eventually makes connection with the computer (it's not instant like It used to be) and Android File Transfer starts, but says it can't connect to the phone. Then it charges for a few minutes, up about 1%, then stops charging. So my question is, when I plugged in my phone to the RCA charger last night, did it fry my phone? Or is my charge cable maybe bad now? I haven't tried another cable yet (everyone at work is an iPhone user and doesn't have a Micro-USB cable lying around) but I'm going to try that and hope it works. If it's not the cable, is it possible that the phone itself got damaged? If so, how could I go about removing root and wiping it to take it into the VZW store for replacement without USB to the computer?
Another new development. I plugged it into a Windows Box (I was using a Mac) and when I plug it in, it says "This Device can perform faster" and talks about plugging it into a USB 2.0 port. I'm using a 2009 Macbook Pro, it has USB 2.0. It won't mount the disk either. So i'm really beginning to wonder if the USB cable is fried.
Turns out it was a bad USB cable. Went to Best Buy and bought a generic cable and it now charges and hooks up to the computer just fine. My ADB doesn't seem to be working though for some reason, on Mac or PC...
Ok, everything is working now. ADB wasn't working because of a conflict with EasyTether on my Mac. Thanks everyone for the suggestions but I've decided to just stick with what I have now (power strip) and not deal with it.

May I recommend you return the Best Buy cable and go to monoprice.com?
I bought five cables from them that are 6 foot long. They work terrific and are higher quality looking than what you get from Best Buy.
So last night (TY Ambien) I decided to use my Logitech Harmony cable to charge my phone... Minutes later the phone kept going in and out of charging mode and now currently will not work at all.
Anyone have any idea what I could possibly do to fix this? No experience with this kind of thing.
Thankfully I forgot to cancel my crap insurance through verizon a few months back and just ordered a new one just in case. Will they say anything about the fact that the phone is rooted?

Don't panic just yet. I have gone through 3 cables already with my Nexus. For some reason micro usb cables get real loose real easily in the Nexus. I have one from Verizon (desperate and paid too much) that fits in there very tightly and always works. So just try a new cable and make sure it has a tight fit.

I actually had the same problem and they sent me out a new one cause I said it was the phone.. I went through about 4 or 5 cables...
Right now though even with the correct cable that's been working fine I can't get any kind of charge.
If I screwed up the connection there's nothing I can try and do to fix it?
Also if I end up having to get a phone should I note use the current verizon cord I have if it's been pluggd into this phone?

I have a nexus and a harmony remote. AFAIK there is nothing special about the harmony cable, it's just a usb cable. The only device I have that has a different cable is my Nook. Guess what I am saying is that I don't think for sure that the cable caused your problem.

Unless you can find a way to transfer stock rom files over the network to your usb and flash it from there, but I am not sure if you can lock the bootloader that way.
As a last case resort, I am not advocating this by any means, if your phone let's say weren't able to boot up or turn on at all then verizon wouldn't be able to say it's been rooted, right? I read of a guy who messed up his so bad it would just boot loop and he couldn't even get into recovery. He just took it to the store and played dumb.
as odd as this sounds, get a cocktail stick and push it down onto the left most pin of the usb port (on phone) apply a bit of pressure and then try charging again.
PjFlo.
Update - Found my standard battery and popped that in... Phone works, when you try to charge it, it says charging but does not charge and goes down if being used.
Any ideas?

Both of my batteries are totally dead now. Looks like I'll be giving asurion $100. Ugh.
Ok thats not a real term but I don't know how else to describe what this is doing. I just bought a new(Renewed) Samsung Galaxy A50 US unlocked from Amazon. Came with a charger and chord of course, USBC and it says "Fastcharge" on the actual charger. And Samsung. So the phone itself is great so far but when it came time to charge it, it Stops/Starts repeatedly(like every 1 or 2 seconds). Each time it does this there's an annoying BEEP and the screen comes back on. It will do this continuously(its like being in Hunt For Red October - FORGET sleeping). I don't know if it's the phone, in which case I need to return it, or the charger or cable. I don't have another USBC phone so its the only charging option I have at this point. I plugged the USBC cable unto a normal charger, and the phone charges normally. However there's no fastcharge then of course. Does this prove it's the charger itself? Or could there be an issue with the phone that only occurs when fastcharging? I once was HUGE into custom Roms and Kernels so I'm not a babe in the woods here but I'm so far out of the loop these days I just don't know. But I damn sure know where to come for help! XDA has never let me down yet!
I will also say I did all the updates to the latest version
Hello there,
I got my Pixel 3a XL for a week now and since yesterday I'm not able to charge it with the original fast charger that came with it. With a different USB A To C cable it works, though very slow.
When I plug in the original charger one of the following happens:
- Nothing. I have to flip the cable like in the old USB days (wtf)
- It charges in a one second Interval. Meaning I hear the sound/vibration when it starts charging, but then it immediately stops charging, starts chargings, stops charging... and so on.
I already factory reset my phone, which didn't help. I tried a different charger from a galaxy phone. Same happens there. Only with a USB A to C cable which is plugged in a PC I am able to charge...
What could that be?

First of all, is this a new, used, or factory refurbished phone? If it's new or refurbished with a warranty, get it replaced under warranty. If it was used and/or has no warranty, look at the port on the phone to see if it's dirty. Carefully clean it out with whatever will fit in the port without damaging it. Pay special attention to the bottom as debris tends to get compressed and eventually gets thick enough to keep the cable from going in far enough to make a good, secure contact.

It's brand new. I did just clean it (but nothing came out or was visible) and now charging works again...
That's weird. It was clean as a whistle and I just thought "just clean it even though it looks clean"... weird!
But thanks anyway
Do you know anyone who has a QC 3.0 adapter and cable USB 3 end? Try it on a different charger... If it fails on multiple chargers/cables, then you device is likely defective and you will need to get it repaired/replaced.
Sorry, no quick fix here...
