Hey guys, I have the problem indicated in the video below, where basically a sudden shock to the back of the phone near the camera can cause it to power down completely (happens wehn resting the phone on a table, in pocket etc).
I've found reports of other people having this problem but no solution. My question is does anyone with the Samsung extended battery (GSM/HSPA+ version btw) with battery door experience this problem as well? I'm wondering if the extra space (I'm assuming) will sort of buffer the area and alleviate the problem?

I've use both standard and official extended batteries. Never had this issue occur, then again, I usually don't go tapping the back of my phone often either. In fact, I'm usually quite gentle with multi-hundred dollar devices. Still, definitely looks like the battery / battery pins are loose. If it were my phone, I'd try being extra careful with it and seeing if a small piece of paper/cardboard/etc can be used to stabilize the battery connection. If not, and you have warranty/insurance I'd talk to warranty/insurance about repair/replacement. If you're extra handy you might try seeing if you can make the connection more stable yourself.

Yeah I thought it was loose too. I tried chucking both the battery and the little plastic rectangle part with the contacts with a piece of paper and it still turned off in my pocket though :-(

Just to add a bit, I tried reproducing this issue (still gently), and was unable to do so with either my standard or extended battery.
I've been using my s4 for about 10 days. everything's fine but it has happened like 3 times the phone just shut off itself without me touching it. it's in my pocket, and i was using it like 5mins ago, then when i take it out i found it's totally off already.
the battery had enough juice at the time and the phone didn't feel too warm either. i totally have no clue why this happened. anyone here is experiencing the same thing with your s4? :crying:
for the first two time i can just press and hold the power button to turn it back on. but today when it happened the third time, the press and hold didn't work until i took out the battery and put it back. when it's on, the battery still had like 70% power.
this is frustrating... should i contact t-mobile for an exchange?
p.s. i rooted the phone and from what i can recall, besides titanium backup i didn't install any new app that i didn't have on my old htc sensation. the sensation didn't have this random shutting down problem. (i don't think the titanium caused either).
It used to happen on my s2. But I change roms and it went away.
Change rom and see what happens.
If possiible go full stock for few days.
Otherwise return it.

I actually have a problem when I'm on the Internet or doing other things. My phone just got stock on a blue screen and I can't do anything to get out of it. I hav3 to turn off my phone in order to ho back . It happens to me like 8 times since I got the phone im frustrating

i didn't install the adobe flash player, nor did i install a different rom. everything is stock. i fully factory reset the phone once and after that i even didn't disable or delete any bloat ware. but the random shutting down still happens... annoying

Mine has done the same thing twice, first time assumed it was me (before the latest firmware upgrade which "improves stability") the second time it was in my pocket, took it out and it was off - thought battery was dead but tried to switch it on anyway and guess what, battery was 90%+
Have no idea why it shut off - stock rom, only "odd" app is Good for enterprise .
Could it be related to overheating in the pocket?
Anyone got any ideas?

Happen to me and to some other Italian guys, too! In my case, the I9500 turn off itself, sometimes reboot itself, just now! Depends from the rom, I don't know why. One rom reboot it, try another rom and after a bit of second shutdown it. And always after tha the display go off
I9505 not, it had only the problem of the audio crackle, for now.

I am having an i9500 (octa core version) and running United Arab Emirates 2013 June 4.2.2 I9500XXUBMEA I9500OJVBMEA firmware (stock , no root) , frequently when the phone is locked it will shut down on it's own and I have to keep the power button held a bit longer than usual for it to start (like 20 seconds) , I do not want to root it because the company I bought it from is not that...good....so I am very afraid of sending it to their service department , please , any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

It's a firmware issue as far as I could tell Good luck finding a good one , I gave up and traded my i9500 for a i9505.
I found out that if i put my phone in the loader it shuts off... Maybe battery problem..

Ok so i may have isolated the cause. at least a physical one. I am an electrician, and i do a LOT of repetitive tasks so i love listening to music while i work. thats when i noticed a pattern to the problem. and this will blow your mind.
( I do not recommend you try this yourself unless you particularily like the sound of 700$ going SNAP)
i took my phone out of my pocket, and by pressing both thumbs on the center of the screen and physicaly bending the phone forward, ( Dont give me crap for this, im smarter than most and i understand limitations. I was impressed that this phone can bend nearly a full 1/8th of an inch!) i was able to replicate the problem.
My theory is, since samsung used a softer plastic for there entire frame, and since the phone is so thin, when ever id bend down, (Pulling pants tighter across my thigh with the phone facing my leg) it would bend and physicaly seperate the metal pins that contact the battery.
PS: just got home, DGAF about spelling right now. is it this hot for anyone else right now!? lol

I've been running the GT-I9505G play edition phone for the last month and only in the last week has the phone began to reboot on its own. What's strange about it is it usually happens when I'm not using the phone. I've seen it reboot maybe a dozen times over the last week. The phone always reboots and doesn't just turn off.
I'm going to see if factory reset takes care of the problem, if not I guess back to Google for a retread...

Yes I do a lot of bending down and I always have my body in awkward angles while working on the flight line and I used to have the same exact problem at work. I always thought that my S4's shutting off was due to the tiny half a mm gap between the bottom of my 7500mAh ZeroLemon Extended Battery and the bottom of the phone's battery slot, in-turn causing the battery to move inside my S4 and make the battery disconnect from the pins. I noticed a tiny gap in the fitting of the battery to the phone and that the battery was never really snug as much as it was with the 3500mAh Anker Extended Battery for my S3; it's really easy to remove the ZeroLemon battery and thought the battery shouldn't be easy to remove.
So I figured it was either the gap causing it to shut off or my movements somehow causing the power button to be pushed while it was in my pocket. I had a feeling it couldn't be the latter though because the thigh-located cargo/map pockets of my ABU's are a bit too large to not have enough room in the pocket for the power button to be pushed. I ended up solving my shutting off problem by cutting a very small piece of thick, durable paper the length of the S4's battery slot and I used the paper as a shim between the bottom edge of the ZeroLemon battery and my S4's battery slot to close the miniscule gap. Since I did used a thick piece of paper as a shim, I've yet to get any sudden shut-off's... even with the amount of times I bend down and move in ways that would cause it to shut off.

I just recently have same issues, it is turning off while the battery is not dead! i have tries to reset the factory setting but it dose not help at all.
what frustrated that Samsung mobile costumer services in UK is not helping much!!!

if your phone shuts off and than you try to restart it and the battery is a lot lower than before than your battery is broken
I get exactly what you describe, only takes a slight bend to shutdown. doesn't do it with the back cover off, without the cover the battery moves out slightly and the phone stays on.

I thought this was worth sharing, this is my second thread ever on XDA and hope it helps somebody.
Quick story about my case:
I tried software fixes, ROMs, and made a lot of reading, when I finally figured it could be an antenna issue, I decided to give myself a try on my cellphone repair skills, turns out I turned a “nearly dead” GPS taking 10 minutes to lock into a “better than average” GPS taking 20 seconds to lock. Time taken for the task, 15 minutes, time suffering from bad GPS signal, 1 year, go figure.
Let’s see if you are a candidate to try this solution:
- You must be sure this isn’t a software related issue (i.e. my GPS works with X rom but it doesn’t with Y rom, that would certainly be a software issue).
- You CAN get a GPS lock but the signal is weak (i.e. constantly dropping signal in an area where you are sure another phone works fine) or GPS locks takes up to 5 minutes (and you already tried a software fix to speed up GPS lock).
- You’re phone is relatively old (i.e. it was bought when it came out, although I’m sure the quantity is low, I assume there are still E98X phones which are brand new and I would not recommend disassembling a brand new phone).
- You have experience opening cellphones (i.e. experience using small phillips screwdriver, gently popping frames/housing/covers, putting back in position plastic buttons before re-assebly).
Before we start, quick explanation on what may be happening to your phone if you are a candidate:
- Presumably, the GPS antenna (and Bluetooth, 3G/4G as well) is making poor contact with the springs on your phone.
- This phone uses contact springs for pretty much everything (see attached picture for springs locations of antennas), so these springs and/or the antenna contacts eventually bent away from each other and lower your GPS, Bluetooth, 3G/4G signals.
Here is what you need to do:
- Remove the back cover, and remove the back frame (See the following video from minute 0:00 to 1:50 for disassembly of backframe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9OJRtf39QA).
- Inspect every spring and antenna contacts (see attached pictures for antenna springs and pad locations), make sure they are not rusted or damaged, else you need a replacement part for it (for antenna pads, you may want to clean those with isopropyl alcohol if you have some).
- Using a soft, thin, *plastic* tool (thinner than a credit card, but sturdier than paper), lift every spring you see up to 10 degrees (see attached picture for reference) and wiggle it up and down to force it to stay tilted up about 10 degrees (don’t force it up more than 15 degrees when wiggling or you risk to break the spring, there are quite a few of springs, I remember at least 5 pairs, so make sure you get them all done).
- Revert all disassembly made (See the following video from minute 6:32 to 7:51 for reassembly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QxLa5rXX7Y), and VOILA!! your GPS signal came to life again (and hopefully your Bluetooth and 3G/4G are enjoying the new perks too!)
-Additionally, better 3G/4G signal does save battery, your cellphone amplifiers require less work and produces less heating too.

Enclosed is a picture from a replacement mid frame cover. Could you please use something like ms paint to circle which pins you bent upward? Looking at my Optimus G Pro 980 Mid frame cover and motherboard/logicboard I do not see these........

UPDATE:
See main post, I got a picture from somewhere else for the spring locations.
Actually my friend, that picture only shows the pads for the antennas, try to match it with your phone and see where they contact, these are going to be the springs, they don't look like spiral springs, these are other type of springs which I don't recall the name but they are more like a V shape, and one of the sides is attached to the board and the other one "springs" up and down, let me know if you got it or I will open my phone again, just for you! (no kidding)
Also, if I were you I would try to do the same for all pairs of springs I see on the motherboard, there is a pair for the speakerphone and one more down the board for something else.
GPS finally fixing
Thank you so much for this post. Before this solution, I tried different roms, gps fixing apps, disabling carrierIQ, editing the gps.conf file to add "better" servers, etc. This is the only solution that really worked. Now I am getting a GPS fix in 10 to 15 seconds where before it was up to a minute or more. I have an LG E980 (ATT Version).
As directed, I turned off the phone, removed the rear case back, removed the battery+sd card+sim card, removed the screws in the back panel of the phone and then separated the back panel from the front panel to expose the circuit boards and spring contacts. Then, I cleaned all the spring contacts and their mating flat contacts on the back panel with alcohol. Then I bent all of the spring contacts up slightly, re-seated the back panel making sure the side buttons were in the correct place (I do not believe the quickmemo and power buttons are interchangeable even though they are the same size fyi), and then secured the screws back in place.

Way to go buddy, I'm glad I could help you and that you were able to follow those horrendous instructions, I can't be sure on your case since yours wasn't as bad as mine, but on my case it also improved 4G reception overall, these antennas are used for pretty much everything so it would only be logical to get better signal on all the services, this is a "must" service on old E98X phones, perhaps nearly half of the GPS and bluetooth issues on the forum are due to this plus a weak or faulty software filtering not helping.
any info how to increase the wifi antenna? could this be the white cable?

I've quit using my OG Pro because the GPS is so poor. Hard to get a fix and drops constantly. Glad I stumbled on this, and will give it a try.
Can you point out which springs are specific to the GPS antenna? I suppose I can try to work with all the springs, but with my luck, I 'll break something that was working fine.

I don't know which ones they are. I did all of them. They are a lever type spring contact so it is hard to break them. Just do so lightly.

A quick tip for those doing this the first time. be careful of the buttons. I've taken apart my optimus g pro a few times now, and those dern things like to fly out of you're not careful when taking it apart. Also, when putting back together, use a small piece of scotch tape on the exterior of the frame to hold the buttons in place when you put the frame back in place. make sure the tabs of the tape stay on the outside, and pul them gently as you snap the screen back on. It's easier to have the frame on the table on put the screen down onto the frame when done this way, and save those dern buttons from coming out of their slots.
I have two OG Pro (E980) developed same broken GPS issue.
Now, I think the problem is the two soft contact pads, when I bent little bit, the GPS 's issue got fixed.
Also, the method not to improve any 4g/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth.

Two years have passed and this thread is still helping people with their now "ancient" G Pros. My problem was that the coax cable had popped loose. Still I went ahead and re-tensioned all the contact springs. GPS is now functioning like new. Thanks to all who contributed.
I recently had to replace my battery in the m8. I managed to find a retailor online, ordered it, came with a install tool and double sided tape to replace the one used before for the speaker covers on top and bottom.
There is so little into on this online, I followed a YouTube video on replacing the digitizer of the phone to learn how to open the phone to replace the battery. I can say from experience its pretty easy, more intimating then anything after watching the video first. After applying heat to phone, I used a hair dryer. Of cource removing the screws that are found after removing the speaker covers that are removed after placing heat. The video I saw suggested guitar pics. I had none and have no idea where to find them. So I used some old credit cards, along with gift cards. The phone was pretty easy to remove from shell after heat. Where I screwed up, and its not mentioned in any videos I saw. THERE IS A SMALL RIBBON THAT SPLICES FROM ANOTHER LARGER RIBBON NEAR OR EXACT LOCATION OF AUDIO BUTTONS ON SIDE OF PHONE. I believe that when opening the phone from frame I may have ripped this ribbon by opening it with a credit card and ever so silently pushing the card upwards to remove the phone from the frame. After replacing the battery and replacing the phone in frame, on first boot my audio buttons don't work. I removed the phone from frame and that's when I noticed the small ribbon that wraps around the side of the phone easily ripple able when using anything along the side of the phone to remove the frame. It's not mentioned in any videos I watched on YouTube, so BEWARE. I'm hoping if anyone knows if this ribbon is replace able and maybe how it might be replaced?? Also if anyone can confirm this ribbon is used for audio connection to buttons?? After noticing the F.UP, I can see how each connector is used to hit the audio up and down but am still puzzled as to why it needs this ribbon I believe. Would think that the audio connection after receiving a hit on up or down would send whatever signal thru the phone onto a much larger ribbon to the motherboard which is on top of the battery. Yes its the same as a small ribbon connection, but I don't see the reason of needing this separate ribbon that appears is just for audio, spliced from a larger ribbon. So I'm hoping that someone can confirm that this is the intenal setup and yes this ribbon is for audio. So that I can maybe replace it, or at least stop me from trying to figure out other reasons of why. But I at least wanted to warn other people of this before they tried to replace the battery themselves. Also if you do replace it and after booting phone on either side it appears that you damaged the digitizer cause maybe one or two buttons don't work on keyboard. Its most likely cause the screws on the frame under speaker covers are to tight. I did that also and thought I broke the digitizer removing the battery. But after removing screw's and enter the booting up the phone with no screw's but in frame, all keyboard functions worked. I then screwed each screw in and applied pressure , then turned phone on to make sure it wasn't to much. Just don't tighting screws with phone booted on, believe you could get a static charge and screw up phone. Hope this guide and question helps anyone replacing battery. Mine failed after using custom ROMs on 5.1.1 , phone began to not stayed charged for more then a hour, also wouldn't even accept a charge. Tried all other fixes, calibrating battery and all. After replacing phone works fine accept for audio which is a pain in the A$$ cause can't manually boot to bootloader on boot by hand.

I have a general hardware problem with my Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. Maybe someone here has an idea or tip for me.
I still used the factory software without any rooting or unlocking the bootloader. So everything original and up to date.
A few month ago the tablet began to restart in the middle of using it. At the beginning it happened seldom, but then more and more often. Also during the restart new restarts happened more and more often, so that it took several retries, until it started again. Now it is not usable anymore, because it is not running longer than a few seconds before the next restart if it happens to boot completely at all.
I was able to make a factory reset but this didn’t solve the problem.
My first theory is, that this could be a problem with the battery, that it is slowly dying and had more and more problems to hold the voltage. But the problem also exists when the power supply is connected. So I am not sure if this rules out the possibility, that this could be cause by the battery? Does somebody know how this is internally wired, if a broken battery could still have a negative effect when the power supply is connected?
Do you have other ideas/advices, what could be the problem or would could be helpful to do?

The USB power input can't sink enough current to boot it or even run it without the battery acting as a reserve during peak usage spikes.
Replace the battery and go from there.

unfortunately I didn't had time to do it yet. I want to change the battery myself and for that I will need time and somebody to borrow me a hot air gun, because everything is glued together.
I will report, when I have done it but it will be at least a few weeks.
Alright, so I'll probably try it sooner, I'll update after replacing the battery. Also, if you haven't tried it yet, you might want to try just disconnecting the battery from the motherboard and connecting again after like 20s, I've read that it sometimes resolves this problem, but it didn't work for me. Fortunately removing the back lid of tab s4 is pretty easy, I used hairdryer, so with heatgun it should be even easier.

Any additional tips for removing the back lid to somebody doing it the first time beyond what you can see in the youtube videos? How do you glue it back together?

I have eventually replaced the battery, and nothing changed unfortunately… I did a factory reset, etc. However I also had an issue that you didn't describe in your original post, which is that USB connection is not working, it only charges the battery, when connected to the PC while booted it's just not visible at all (tried with several cables, two computers, on windows and linux), when in download mode it kind of shows up, but it's not recognized and no drivers or any solution that I've found are working, so I don't know if it's still hardware problem something with the USB related parts or something in the system on lower level. Well, I'll be trying.
About the back lid. Beyond YT videos only thing that comes to my mind is patience. About the glue, you have few options and it depends a bit on how removing the cover goes. 1) glue stays in the more or less same condition as before removing the cover - that's how it went for me - in that case you can just reuse it, just by closing the cover and pressing it down for some time, it's probably not as strong as new but for me it worked just fine, especially if you use a book cover for the tablet there won't be a problem.
But if the glue came off, wrinkled a lot, or just doesn't stick anymore, 2) you can either use a special epoxide glue often with signature like T-7000 or T-800 but if you just look for a glue for smarphones you'll easily find it.
