G3 Overheating issue - T-Mobile LG G3

Had this phone for quite awhile and I can't believe how hot this thing gets. I can be in my house paying some simple game and it will shut down because of the heat. Only threads I've seen on this subject pretty much tell you to not use your phone and you'll be fine, which is completely unacceptable. I do a lot of driving, I live in Texas and it gets hot, I usually have to hold it on front of my a.c. For a bit too get it to turn on. Getting very frustrating. I literally never have the brightness above half way. Anyone have a fix for this or just toss it and get a new phone that has the basics down?

Mine was fine for awhile, but started heating up recently, the only thing that helps oddly is to turn off Wi-Fi. I've read that a full wipe and re install of the os can help too, haven't tried that yet

Yea was thinking about trying that this weekend. I don't use Wi-Fi ever. I make sure to turn off all radios, even GPS when I'm not using it. Reflash was my next step. Hopefully that will fix it.

Dial 3845#*851# and then find settings for turning off overheating warning. Their is a guide here in the forums somewhere, just do a simple search for 3845#*851#

Is your EVO soft resetting automatically or on its own?

Mine just started to after lunch today. I've had it on the desk and saw it restart about 3 times in less than a 15 minute window.
How do I know this just started and it hasn't been going on in my pocket? Well over the weekend I would have heard it reset (since it's not on silent/vibrate like it is at work). It also significantly drains the battery more if you are constantly soft resetting it/turning it off and on.
So is anyone else having this issue? I need to figure out if it was just a freak occurrence or if something is wrong with it.
I did NOT root it, running everything stock - I did some updates on some apps I have installed but no new programs installed in a couple of days - again this just started happening today in the last couple of hours.
And besides email and messaging, I'm not running anything in the background like Pandora or eBuddy, so I don't think it's a program causing it to reset.
Edit:
Not sure if this is the best category for the thread, but I could not find any threads similar to this besides the battery issue in general. Apologies if this thread already exists somewhere.
No uncalled for restarts here. Open the back, pull the battery, check the contacts? Is it plugged in when it does this? Try padding the battery with a folded piece of paper between the door and battery to ensure a snug fit. If it still does that, time to go to a store.
@Jye75
Thanks, I have pulled out and looked at the battery. I have that Seido case they were slangin' at Best Buy on it, I don't think there's an issue with the contacts.
One weird thing is during one of the automatic restarts, the phone made the start up sound. I had the phone on vibrate and the start up before that (and after when I manually restarted it) did not have a tone. Very odd... perhaps it's possessed.
Odd indeed... drop by a Sprint store, would be my next move.
It happened to me two times today since I did the full root last night. The last time it happened, I clicked on a input field and it restarted...
I had the issue when I turned off "enable always on mobile data"...turning it back on stopped the resets.

Probably just a kernel panic. I would not worry about it too much. It's happened to me on my Hero, and on my Evo.
For comparison purposes, how often does OS X Kernel Panic? How often does Windows BSOD?
Android is rather new technology in comparison. Yes, it runs Linux, which is rather mature at this point, but it's built with a lot of new technology, which may not be as mature as the stock kernel itself.
/two cents.

Thanks, I realized that was one of the few things I've changed at the end of the weekend. Sweet!

It reset about 8-10 times in less than 2 hours. More than half of that time the phone was in my pocket and not in use. I hardly got a signal inside of Walmart so it's not like I was using it that much in there.
I have set the data to be always on and hopefully this will help...
I appreciate all the help guys!

I had the same exact thing happen to me beginning this past weekend. It was driving me insane since it was rebooting every 30 minutes or so. I noticed it started happening more so when I did not have good signal. In any case I came to the conclusion it was all the tinkering (root part 1 and custom ROM) I've done with the phone so I wiped it last night and started from scratch (root part 1 and 2 and custom ROM). No reboots yet, but seeing your post concerns me since it's not the first post I've read regarding this issue. I'll keep you posted if mine keeps doing it. I really hope it's not a real issue, getting a replacement does not seem like it will be an easy process at the moment with them constantly selling out.

Thanks for the input. Your concern about the difficulty in getting a replaced unit due to them selling out is EXACTLY why I'm trying to figure out if this is a software glitch.
I'm also glad you pointed out that it tended to happen when the signal was ****ty. Last night I enabled the data always on (it was on by default and I turned it off earlier in the weekend) and I haven't had a reset yet this morning. Of course I've also been in good coverage areas. When it kept resetting like mad last night it was inside of Wal-Mart, and they have some serious shielding on their building or something since I rarely get a full or even half signal in there regardless of carrier or phone in past experience. A lot of friends on Altell/Verizon beg to differ with me though.
I'm thinking if they're connected, the fact that a weak data signal contributes to the device rebooting is really odd; the only time I can think of why a phone should reboot on its own is the OS crashes (or some app takes up ALL the available RAM, freezing it, then crashing it) or it overheats (but would seem to turn off rather than reboot). I had a BB Curve that did this at one point so I had to clear the cache all the time.
Edit:
Actually, I realized when it started to happen it was at work where I have excellent reception. Hmmm... well at least it hasn't reset on its own this morning so far (so far meaning 30 minutes).

Well for what it's worth, mine was also doing it in good signal areas as well. It just seemed a lot more pronounced when I was getting bad signal. Anywho I reread your original post that you are running stock software so let's see if it keeps occuring for both of us regardless of the differences in software we are running. I also still have "Enable data always on" off.

Sounds like a plan. Still no problems so far with data always on.
FWIW I also did the battery trick by switching the phone to CDMA auto from GSM auto. Supposedly you have to do it everytime you boot your phone, and it's supposed to help with battery life. Thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700601
It has to have something to do with turning off always on mobile data. It goes away when it's on, but then comes back when you turn it off. I just did rooted and unlocked nand protection on my phone last night and turned off always on mobile data and haven't had any reboots yet. Then again, it took a little while for it to start resetting last time so we'll see I guess. Could just be some glitch in the software that putting a new rom on has fixed...

I had this happen to me while I was trying to talk on the phone and use google navigation at the same time while running the Overclocking widget to throttle my cpu to 285mhz when the screen was off. Whenever I turned off the screen my phone would reboot.
My guess is that there some issue there where the cpu cant keep up with the heavy usage, locks up and forces a reboot...
I've since gotten rid of the OC widget, rooted my phone and installed a custom rom. I've not had it happen since, of course I havent tried talking and using google nav yet.
I've also noticed that advanced task killer caused the htc sense launcher to reboot (force killed) every once in a while... I've gotten rid of that too...
happend to me while talking on the phone twice, it was weird i could hear him still talking the entire time it was rebooting, up untill the OS actually launched...Im gunna try and kill set cpu, how many other people have this running while its rebooting???

This happened to me today, in-call. My phone has reset 6 times since then off-call.
Alright un-installed setcpu and it still resets. I'm now trying to shim my battery to see if its a loose connection. I gotta figure this out its driving me crazy...
UPDATE: still hapining with battery shined, tried both data sync on and off, installed setcpu, all to no avail... maybe I will try a hard reset... I remember on my kaiser this started hapinin and it was a bad nand flash, but I'm running stock with unrevoked... so if anyone has any ideas I'm wide open.

Running Toast's root has stopped it for me as of today. If that actually had any effect, I have no idea...but no resets yet with always on mobile data on and off. Maybe flashing the rom again helped...

Wow dude I'm sorry to hear you're having that much trouble. I'm on step 2 of part 2 of Toast's root method but running into major issues. Since I did step 1 (and before that I enabled data always on again) I haven't had a reset issue.
For the record, my Hardware version 2.
Do you guys think this is a widespread or isolated issue? I'm surprised it hasn't happened more or less, in other words I figured there would be either a lot or hardly any comments about it. This medium sized number is interesting.

[Q] Random Reboot Issue!?

I was thinking of picking up a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon. Do people have this rebooting issue I have heard about and is there a fix for it? Would it still be worth getting even if it had the rebooting problem?
I'm having a really bad time of it as of late. I think it is software or configuration in my case. I've been trying to narrow it down but there are too many variables right now for me to easily determine the source of it.
I can't really tell you whether you should get it anyway. The only person who would know is you. I would not have gotten this phone if I knew it was going to act like this. It just really pisses me off when it does it in the middle of a phone or text conversation. I also get annoyed when it does it in the middle of the night because it sits in its stand by my bed and functions as a clock. It vibrates and goes to full brightness when it reboots and doesn't have the courtesy to start the clock back up ;-) Add in the random data drops and I am about ready to make this phone a suppository for the Galaxy Nexus product manager. If none of that bothers you, jump in with both feet. Keep in mind, this doesn't happen to everyone. My husband doesn't have the rebooting issue but he doesn't really use his phone either.

Defective Radio?

I have been having a lot of problems with my new honey, namely in the signal department! I went through a whole thing with it right after activation...it worked, then didn't, then did...etc. A chat session, phone call, & 2 trip to the actual store (all in 1 day!) resulted in them doing a factory reset and sending me on my looney way. It seemed to have helped, for about a day and a half. Now it is dropping signal again! It seems to do so, sometimes, when I have the wifi on. But then sometimes not (I'm not sure if wifi is culprit or coincidence.)
The ATT store employees said I may have changed a setting (I'm sure I didn't as I don't know of any setting that would even cause that!) and also "explained" my signal will naturally fluctuate...(They think I am an idiot, obviously and of course the phone was working fine when I was there...duh!) They also gave me a new sim card.
I *really* want to love this phone! But I'm finding it frustratingly undependable. Texts won't send when I need them to. I'm not getting them either, always. Voice is hit or miss when it drops (sometimes it works, sometimes not.) I have ALSO noticed the signal is not as strong as my old beloved Cappy. That thing was a horse (and I'm thinking of going back to it if this new one doesn't wise up!) Seriously, $300 bucks for a brand new phone & it can't keep a proper signal?
Is it the radio? Is it the software (still 100% stock, unrooted)? Should I make them give me a new one? What if it doesn't work, either? Flashing it to fix the issue is fine for me, but I've been holding out for multi-view before I get flash-crazy. lol Not to mention I may have to return it so better to not mess with it [yet]. I'm very frustrated & tired of getting looked upon like I'm the typical woman idiot who is not as smart as her new smartphone!!! I am NOT imagining it!!!

Sounds like your antennae is shorting out or something like it wasn't soldered properly or the cable isn't secure. Would explain why WiFi affects it. I'd go there and demand a replacement and if they don't wanna budge your within 30 day no questions return. Then go to a diff store and get a new one. I really don't see it being a software issue.

Is it possible that whatever the problem was, it miraculously resolved itself? I had it drop signal two more times since this post, then nothing since. It's been working perfectly. I hate to keep it if it might arise again but I hate to return it if it was some weird fluke thing.
This may or may not be related to the above problem: has anyone noticed their reception is not as good as on a previous device? I had a Cappy and it always got great signal. I noticed this one is not as strong in the same places I previously visited with my old phone. Although admittedly, it seems to be improving. Does that even make sense or is even possible? Just like me, my phone has to be the goofball of the bunch!

Nope. I've done nothing because I'm having this returning debate. lol I'm itching to though!
This is classic "my car doesn't work so take it to the garage then it works fine and they will make fun of you" If I do return it what do I say? It is documented about my "troubles" as per the ATT phone rep. Though if I can't reproduce the problem they're just going to send me on my way, I'm afraid.

You spent enough money on the device, you should be absolutely happy with it, not apprehensive. If you wait past the return date, it's going to sit in the pit of your stomach for 20 months and ruin your enjoyment of it until you can upgrade again. Not worth it. Smile your brightest smile, walk into the store, very nicely tell them that you've had multiple issues and the AT&T phone reps said to go in and ask for an exchange. That's it. They're going to count on you being intimidated and going away. Smile, be nice, and don't be intimidated.
If they say you have to reproduce the problem, invite them to spend the day with you. The Note 2 is amazing and you shouldn't settle if you believe your hardware is having problems.

Yes. I have decided to take it in later today, as my 14 days is up on Friday. I hope they have stock of them. Anyhow...I have another question. If a phone is sitting still with no movement (and the weather is good, lol) will there be variations in signal strength? I get 3 bars with 4G showing, then it drops to one tiny bar. Sometimes the 4G disappears then reappears. The it will go back up to 4 bars. All in the course 5 minutes! I do realize signal will vary with movement but will it if your phone is just sitting there?
I am trying to experiment a little. I just realized/remembered that I had (uneventfully) dropped my phone (not hard, in-case) about the same time as my dropped signal problem pretty much resolved itself. So then I was like, hmm, maybe there IS something loose inside. I've tried gently shaking/jarring it here on my desk, coincidentally with the bars dropping back to just 1 as a result. But then again it may be coincidental as they are seeming to waiver A LOT. I just wondered if it is normal.
I never really stared at my old phone (Galaxy1) here at my desk but I'm almost positive it always had more than 1 bar at this same location and I never noticed it waiver like this one. But like I said I never had to make myself stare at it to check, either! lol Just wondering if someone knows a little more about cellphone signal 101 than me.
I have the issue of no 4G HSPA+ but I can get a strong LTE signal when in an LTE reception area. I'm wondering if you are in an LTE area and can get LTE? Where are you located?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I have noticed problems with my GN2 as well. Mine shows I have signal but my data stalls or doesn't seem to work as it should. I'm in an area where there shouldn't be any problems. Only seems to happen in non LTE areas. Whenever I have LTE signal this thing is blazing fast.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Update: Took the phone in. Basically, they had never heard of the issue with this phone. But...I walked away with a replacement. So far so good though I've had it only a few hours. The girl was very nice & explained even though I was borderline limit she would take care of me. I told her I received it Fri the 9th but she said they were basing the 14 days on the 7th! I said I didn't physically have it till the 9th! Jeeze. Moot point since she was going to take care of it anyhow but it just concerned me how (corporate) att could chop 2 days of my in-store return time!
So no, I'm not in LTE land, unfortunately. 3g H+ & E only though I can't complain about the coverage or speed. Good enough for me 4 sure.
The signal bars waivered quite a bit even while in the store. They said while some fluctuation is normal it shouldn't be as much as it was doing especially with the close proximity of the tower & good weather and especially while just sitting on the counter.
I downloaded the free app "No Signal Alert" from the Play Store. In just a few hours it recorded lost signal 4 times! (In a very good coverage area) [my first phone b4 the exchange] Consider using it if you want to see if you are losing signal like I was. Handy app!
Hopefully this is a good one. I know it sounds goofy but this phone seems to even move faster than the other. Weird. It will be interesting to hear if anyone else is having this problem. Maybe there was a bad batch of them or something? Like the Nexus I read about & their signal problems.

Haha im glad that they helped ya! No its not goofy or silly to think that one phones faster then another because no two phones are alike. The silicone chips are very different and performance can very greatly. I had an s3 that wouldnt take custom kernels to save its life but I got it replaced after a two year old and a toilet incident haha and that one took even the most abusive settings in stride!

I have a similar situation with mine. LTE will be working fine but then I notice that once I connect to my home wifi and then either leave my wifi range or turn off wifi the LTE icon will show in the status bar and it will show that it's sending and receiving data but Web pages will stall and never load, Play Store will timeout, and SpeedTest.net will start up but the needle will freeze about 1/8 of the way up indefinitely. I've toggled data at this point but it never fixes it, I have to restart the phone at which point LTE works perfectly but once I get back on my wifi the cycle will repeat, this has happened reliably for about the past week.
Do you all think I have a defective radio or am I missing something? I'm still within my return Window and will probably swap it Friday.

Sounds very similar to how mine is acting. I'm wondering if it is the ATT smart WiFi app causing the problem. Shows data incoming and outgoing but stalls.

That's exactly how it's acting for me. I just now disabled the AT&T Smart WiFi app and after a quick restart and toggle test there was no problems, but I'm not sure if the problem will only pop up after I've been on wifi for a while. I'm going to see if it keeps doing it tomorrow.

Disabling Smart WiFi appeared to fix the problem.

What I noticed today is that when this same issue happens, with 4G icon and wifi icon both active, it occurs after I manually check for a firmware update within the system settings. The 4G icon doesn't go away until I reset the phone.
Also I manually deleted the all the AT&T boat ware apps before this was happening so the smart wifi app is not causing this for me.

Weird, if you get the issue and don't have the Smart WiFi app then it must be something else and it was coincidence that it worked normal for me today. I've only checked for firmware once (when I first got my phone) so it must be something else causing it. I'm hoping the multi view firmware will also have a fix for it.

Just bought a new galaxy s3 and it's really warm

So i just bought a new galaxy s3 from wind mobile and whenever i use it the bottom part gets really warm. It gets hot even if im just browsing the web on chrome, or going on reddit. Is this normal or should I bring it back to get another one?
that's just the battery getting hot and the radio. Nothing big... usually happens when you start watching porn or really browsing the net..
>_> or maybe I just watch porn on my phone and that's just me.

My first one got really hot too. Got a refurb due to weird camera issues
Second one doesn't seem to get as hot. But I also cannot undervolt like I could with my older one. But I'm pretty satisfied with the new one. Its up to you if you wanna switch. Try under voting before you decide.

It's common for it to get warm. Even really hot.

there's times when I'll watch netflix for hours and it won't get hot, and times when it'll be sitting in my pocket not doing anything getting hotter than hades. My theory is that it depends on where you are and how much its fighting acquisition of cell towers... but I really don't know (seems to get hot not doing anything in the same general area though, which is why that's my guess).
Gs3 extremely hot.
I have been wanting to make a bit of a rukus about this phone running HOT.
BURNING HOT. My finger becomes sore. NOT COOL to pay all this $$$,&
Burn your fingers. I had written the President of Samsung as a member here had.
They must have had ALLOT of complaints because in 7 minutes I had a reply
to go to my carrier first, see if they can resolve the issue.. Bla bla bla... Same old
Same old... This person who posted had results including a NEW PHONE SHIPPED.
Now-this was more than a couple months ago.
(TMobile) . BTWay, wanted me to Master Reset.
I also have a ''gapps forceclose'' issue. If I have ANYTHING on sync, it Forcecloses
every move made.
ALSO~Was there any validity to the rumor that the set up of the Battery for this particular phone
was incorrect & the reason for all the excess heat?
Thank you as always for your shared knowledge.

Unstable after JB update

Ever since I got the update, my phone has been going crazy. Every night, wifi disappears and I have to turn it on and turn it off several times to get it back. The data connection will sometimes randomly disappear and I have to restart the entire phone. The whole system will slow to a crawl, not allowing me to do much of anything until I restart it.
Is there any way to remove JB and reinstall it? That is kind of what I'm guessing is going on, it's really all I can think of. I never had any of these problems before and my phone was incredible. Now, it's pretty annoying.
Thank you!
Not sure you maybe able to us t-silvo (something like that) process, but i was able to root after, but now my battery goes quick and the phone is always running hot now, which i believe is causing me to drop 4g all the time now, plus my wifi tether is not stable and i get better connection from my laptop with 600 kbps cheap at&t service vs the phone's 11000 to 17000 kbps

I really don't feel like rooting this phone, but I think at some point I may have to so that I can reinstall the update. I may take it to a Sprint store too and have them mess with it to see what is going on. Unstable connectivity issues all around are annoying.
