Hey guys, I probably have a pretty unusual question or rather observation. Sometime yesterday night when I connected the Galaxy Nexus to the power outlet it started to make a crackling noise. I immediately disconnected it but it already smelled like burnt plastic. As you can believe I was pretty shocked! Trying to turn on the phone worked flawlessly though, so I though, OK might have been my outlet and tried two different ones. Still to no avail, the phone works but won't charge.
I turned it off for the night and waited until the morning to try to connect it to my computer (thinking maybe it's the plug that's broken) and reset it to factory default. Big mistake! Windows pops up with a warning telling em that it detected a power surge on one of my USB ports, resulting in my phone still not charging, the USB port being broken (won't recognize my USB key anymore), and and the Micro-USB connector emitting some smoke after I unplug it from the Nexus.
Now, enough storytelling. Maybe you guys can help me with the mountain of questions I have after this episode:
A) Really, what happened here? I don't think it has something to do with the software side of it, can it? (eg Battery overloaded?) Then I would guess more people would have had the same problem... I'm running AOKP M3 and Franco Kernel 3.0.08-M1.
B) Did anyone have the same problem?
C) I guess it's unfixable from a software standpoint, so my only option would be to send it back to Amazon and hope they replace it. Any other ideas? I bought it at Amazon.de (Germany) but due to it having AOKP Rom and Franco Kernel installed getting a replacement might be difficult.
C) How do I get my USB port functioning again? It's a new notebook but I don't want to send it back for repairs as I bought it in Hong Kong (I have an international warranty though.) and need it to write my Thesis.
Update: Uninstalled and re-installed the USB drivers, that fixed the USB port.
Thanks for your time and hopefully help!

A) Sounds like a short circuit somewhere. My guess would be the connector or close to it.
B) I certainly didn't but I'm sure it's happened to someone.
C) Unroot and Relock and send it back to Samsung if Amazon doesn't take it back. I'm not sure about their return policy since it's a cellphone that is under warranty. May also depend how long ago you bought it.
The more I think about it I wonder if it's just the USB cable... Since you said the smoke came from the Micro-USB connector... Plug it back into the computer without the phone and see if you get the USB power surge thing again. There may just be a short in the cable.
Of course checking it with a multimeter would be safer, do you have one of those?
Or do you have another Micro-USB you can try charging the phone with?

The problem is that I can't even unroot it since it is not being recognized by the computer (and I get the power surge warning). I will try with the new cable, and then send it back even if it works. might give me problems further down the line if I don't.

I don't have a different cable (or multimeter) near me at the moment but will give an update as soon as I do. I didn't get the power surge warning when I just plugged in only the cable, but as there is no source that could draw power that seems likely to me.
P.s.: Just bought it in january so generally sending it back shouldn't be a problem - if I can get it unrooted.

Well that's "good" in that we know the cable isn't shorted. I thought maybe some pins or wires were touching inside the cable that would cause a short (+5VDC and GND) even without the cable being plugged into anything.
So it does look like the fault is in the phone somewhere... And that could be just about anything.
Being that it's Amazon they probably will just replace it and not even bother with checking for it being rooted - especially since you can say it's smoking. As far as I know only the carriers will turn on the phone and look it over (not to mention most Amazon employees wouldn't know root it it reached out of the phone and smacked them across the face). Other 3rd party stores just mark it as defective and put it in a box to send back. I'm not sure how Amazon's return process works though.
I had several problems with my EVO (speakers mostly) and had it rooted when I took it in. They just fixed it anyway and even told me they liked what I had done with it a few times.
Hey, just to give an update I didn't get a specific explanation but Amazon replaced the battery, cable & charger. Now its working again. No problems with it being rooted, they even left rooted but installed stock android & kernel.
I'm currently having this problem, i called google, and they transferred me to samsung. And their department that handles this issue is closed on weekends

any update? i'm having this problem aswell. my phone wont charge through the wall charger but will when connected to a computer... but when it's connected to the computer it says that my usb device (phone) has malfunctioned.
because of that "malfunction" i cant revert back to stock everything and relock everything to get it repaired with bell mobility.

when i sent them my phone i couldn't bring back to stock software but i still shipped it out either way, i actually got an email from samsung today saying a component has been replaced and being shipped out back to to me, so i guess they fixed it with it being rooted, so when i receive it ill let you know
Well I got back my phone today and its charging again. But they restored my phone back to factory setting. So I lost all my pics and phone didn't restore previous apps etc but oh well as long as they fixed it and no questions asked I'm happy

Hi guys,
I know this question is not related to our note 2. If anyone knows alot about computers can help me out with this. The other day, our power went out. I think the power supply in my hp desktop computer went out also. I couldn't turn it back on. The green light on the power supply keeps on flashing. I Google on that problem but still can't get it it fixed. Anyone know where I can get the power supply replacement? I currently have Bestec ATX-250-12Z Rev D7R Power Supply. I found a few websites that have them for sale but I don't want to pay too much for it. Looking for something around $30 or less. Not planning to keep this computer for long. I don't know much about computers. It doesn't have to be that same brand. Thanks in advance
I bet you can find some cheap no name one from a local mom/pop computer store cheap enough.
I know that when I worked at Frys they had power supplies that work for HP desktops for good price. You can call any Frys to find out which power supply to get. Then go to their website or to Amazon and order it.
When replacing just what you take out you put back in.
Also make sure the fans, including the cpu fan are working and get all dust and dirt out of the computer.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'll see if I can call Frys to see if they can help me to find a right power supply.

Just a heads up, when a power supply goes out, it sometimes takes the motherboard with it. If it doesn't power up with new power supply, that's probably what happened.

Some HP desktops take a smaller size ATX power supplies. Which is why I told the user to get hold of someone to find out which size ATX power supply their HP model uses. They used standard full ATX, Micro ATX, and Flex ATX power supplies.
Which that is a good question. What is the HP model number of the HP desktop in question?
Ok first tried to open your computer and disconect the power supply from the wall ones you do that disconect the power supply from the motherboard wait at least 5 minutes and conect it back and tried if it work see if the fans from the power supply turn on if it doesn't your power suplied is damage second. When the new one arrive tried it and if it doesn't work. Press the power button for 30 seconds if you hear a beep three times that means that your mother board is good so what is wrong is your procesor or the memory you can call hp and they will guide you on how to diagnosed the main proble and they can also fix it for you it's all depends if your computer still in warranty. I can tell you that because im a computer technician I hope this will help you

Hi everybody. I have had some strange issue. It is like if the usb entry wasn't working. The phone doesn't connect to the computer.
- If I plug it, it doesn't appear as connected.
- If I charge it it doesn't charge.
But here there is the thing... When the phone is completely powered off, if I connect the phone to the computer, the phone powers on, shows the bootlogo (in my case DoomKernel) and then powers off (without charging)
It is like If the USB entry was broken or something like that... I cannot flash other fw or kernel and I can charge it because I own a broken arc. I change batteries, charge, and rechange batteries.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers

Have you got any Nandroid backups you could try restoring from when it worked?
I think it is a hardware issue. I would try that, but my nandroids are from other android version.
Currently I am using DoomKernel v22. If I restore a CM9 nandroid it would bootloop...
I have contacted with the service centre, and the warranty covers this, but I would be a month and a half without phone... I am trying to repair it myself.
That's a hardware problem. Probably with bq24185 chip. Without charger or usb cable connected, you can reboot your phone and check (via BBS) for a constant kernel wakelock called bq24185_watchdog_lock.
I don't know about Spain, but in my country, they gave me a new Arc S (they couldn't fix it) when this issue happened to me 6 months ago. Don't forget to flash stock FTF and relock bootloader (even if it doesn't restore the DRM keys) if you used official unlock method.

I bet your using a laptop.
I was in a hotel and only took my laptop a cable and my phone. then i had the exact same problem you are having. Turns out laptops usually only have 1 usb port inside. it hits a usb hub and then gets extended out to the ports you see on the outside of your laptop.
Laptops are all about saving battery life. so the hub takes some then after its all split up there isnt much to give your phone. so it never even recognises it. I was so mad. I thought it was the cable the whole time then i get home and the cable is fine. i went 3 days with no phone because it would not charge off the laptop.
Good luck.

Yes... that's why I think it is a hardware issue in the usb entrance to the phone...
EDIT: I have noticed, that when I try to get into flashmode, I unplug the phone, I press back key, I connect it and the green light appears for a milisecond, but I can't make it stand.... I can't get in any of the modes...
EDIT: The same with fastboot. I plug the phone while pressing menu key, blue light appears but suddently it goes.
EDIT3: I downloaded the rom I was using from the phone using wifi. I moved it to /sdcard. I rebooted into recovery and after wiping, I flashed it. I still cannot get in fastboot or flashmode...

Hi,
Last few days i noticed that my Note2 shows error. when i plug it on charger it keeps saying "dock is connected", playing dock sound, and showing docking welcome screen (page buddy). This is specially wierd, because i disabled docking sound and welcome page in settings. But at the moment its on charges and it constantly shows dock connected/disconnesced, turn on my screen automatically, etc. I am not charging it via laptop with usb.
I use stock rooted rom. 4.1.2
Anybody had similar experience? Could this be software or hardware issue?
Thank you.
i now tried charging it with usb from laptop, again constantly showing dock is connected, playing sound, turning on my screen,...
I have the exact same problem since 2-3 days now. I think its maybe the charger port the problem... =/
I tried factory reset, but problem is still there.and wierd thing happened, phone wasnt connected on charger i was walking on street and heard dock sound....it showed dock is connected :/
Is there any way to turn off dock option? I have stock rom 4.1.2 but its rooted...

yes you can change the charging port flex board. I did it thinking I had busted my port but I had actually busted my cable. I get the same message as you when I use a much shorter micro USB cable. Try using the cable that came with your phone and see if that makes a difference.
anyway I got mine off ebay, $18 inc shipping, they even gave a prying tool and a screwdriver. its a very very easy process to change the charger port.
I tried posting a link but im not allowed to, so go to ebay type "note2 charging port" and you will get heaps of results.
goodluck
I experienced the same Problem and since my note 2 is in warranty I went to service centre and got usb port (complete assembly) changed. No problem now.
Hi. I got the Zenfone 2 about a month ago and hadn't had any problems with the battery until today.
I had to transfer files from the phone to the office's PC (at home I use bluetooth to transfer files so I never needed to connect it before).
This PC didn't have bluetooth, so I plugged in the phone through my USB cable to use Asus PC Link.
When the 'turn USB Debugging Mode ON' message appeared, I pressed 'Yes'.
The PC didn't recognize the phone, so eventually I disconnected it again and sent the files using WeTransfer (app which I then deleted).
After an hour or so I connected my phone to a portable charger, and the charging icon and light lit up. I realized after a while that it wasn't actually charging, cause the battery percentage had in fact gone down instead of up.
I didn't worry at the time, but as the day went on I tried different ways of charging it (another person's cable, connecting it to the PC, etc) and the battery kept draining.
When I got home it was at about 10% and I was hysterical, so I connected it with the standard charger that came with the phone, but it didn't charge either. (Though, at ALL times now, it kept showing the 'charging' icon, even when not plugged in).
Then, at about 4% it turned off, I think to avoid running out of battery completely.
I couldn't figure out what the hell happened, but then I thought: COULD IT BE that turning on the USB Debugging Mode made the USB stop working for charging the phone?
So I decided to turn the phone on and turn USB Debugging Mode off ASAP, but now it wouldn't turn on anymore and the 'empty battery' icon appeared.
Soooo, I have a phone with an empty, non-removable battery and I can't even turn it on to fix (what I THINK is, and I could be wrong) the problem. At times, when I plug it in, it has a little plus + sign beside the battery, but it still doesn't charge.
Does anyone know what the problem might be and how I could solve it?
What can I do? Besides CRYING A LOT.
Have you tried another cable (perhaps a friend's that you can verify works) and checked the phone USB port for debris?

I tried two other cables and it didn't work, but I'll keep trying. The USB port seems to be clean. I'll look at it some more, though, with a strong flashlight, see what I can find. Thanks.

I bought the 2gb RAM version, which doesn't come with the quick charger, but I just charged it with the normal charger that came with the phone. I didn't need fast charging. It still isn't working, so I'm gonna send it for RMA service this week. I have a question about that: do I need to send the original box with all its contents or just the phone, usb cable and charger? Thanks.
Connect it to a computer with an USB cable while the phone is off. See if it charges that way. If it does, don't turn it on while the charge % is low.

Just so you know, activating the USB debugging mode cannot cause your battery issue.
You mentioned that you saw the charging icon being displayed while the cable was unplugged. This makes me think you may have bent/damaged the usb charging socket and some pins inside are doing contact when they aren't supposed to, but I'm not sure since I cannot see your phone.
If the charging port is not damaged, then it's a battery problem. In some cases it can be fixed by physically disconnecting and reconnecting the battery from the motherboard. Beware, this is not easy and if you are not careful you can damage your phone. Also I don't know if this will void your warranty. What you have to do, is disassemble your phone until you have access to the battery, then unplug the battery, wait 1 minute, connect it again and put all pieces back where they belong. This might have a 50% chance of solving your issue.
Disassembly guide: http://www.myfixguide.com/manual/asus-zenfone-2-teardown/ (Do all steps until they remove the battery).
If the usb/charging port isn't damaged, and reconnecting the battery doesn't solve the issue, then your battery is dead, and you have to contact ASUS to get your phone replaced.
Dear Blasterkat101,
Please do not send in original packaging as it may not be returned. For power related issues we recommend sending in power adapter and USB cable with unit. If this is a USA/Canada model Zenfone 2 and you would like me to assist with an RMA, please send a private message to [email protected] with case # N150721539 in the subject line.
Sincerely,
Frank

Thank you so much for answering! It made everything clearer. I was about to dissasemble the phone, but I was afraid I'd void my warranty or leave it in an even worse state than before, so yesterday I sent it for RMA and I'll see if they can fix it. If they can't find problems with it or tell me they can't fix it, I'll have to choose between returning it or keeping it and trying to fix it by myself (but at this time getting my money back would be pretty useful, so..).
Nevertheless, your answer was very useful and so I thank you! If at any time I have the need to dissasemble my Zenfone again I will be able to do it

Thanks, I sent only the phone, cable and adapter yesterday. I'll wait now
I've got an RMA question if you can help. Is there any way to not have to pay the $25 for the RMA? I've got a 3 week old phone and tech support wants me to pay $25 for the process. That seems like a steep price to address a problem with the phone that isn't my fault.
Dan
On a sidenote, never use a cheap powerbank as I had charging issues with another brand phone and it eventually died. Battery charge would jump from 40 to 100. I learned my lesson to only use same brand powerbank/chargers or any quality QuickCharge certified accessories from other brands like LG, Samsung etc
I have the exact same problem. Has anyone been able to fix this or the only solution is to send it to ASUS? My phone is only 45 days old!!!!!

Apologize for the delayed response. Unfortunately the $25 is the processing fee for an advance replacement. If you would like to send in for warranty service there is no charge to you. For more details with advance replacement please see http://www.asus.com/us/support/Article/744

The phone still charges but I have to move the usb cable around a bit to get it right then set it down and not touch it. It won't charge it otherwise.

Have you tried with a different USB cable? If you decide to send in for service it should be covered under warranty but cannot guarantee it. The repair center will determine that once its inspected.

charging
Hi I'm in Mexico and bought an ASUS_Z00AD in Hong Kong, I think is the WW version, I have problems trying to charge the phone, it only charges with the charger that came with the phone (is not the one with 2 A is the 1.35A) , I have tried to charge with two different power banks and even when the light turns to orange and shows the battery icon charging it doesn't charge, the same happened if I try to charge with my computer.
The other day i let the phone completely discharge and took me very long time to power on again.
What can I do
