[Q] Zenfone 2 not charging AT ALL. Now it's dead. - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I got the Zenfone 2 about a month ago and hadn't had any problems with the battery until today.
I had to transfer files from the phone to the office's PC (at home I use bluetooth to transfer files so I never needed to connect it before).
This PC didn't have bluetooth, so I plugged in the phone through my USB cable to use Asus PC Link.
When the 'turn USB Debugging Mode ON' message appeared, I pressed 'Yes'.
The PC didn't recognize the phone, so eventually I disconnected it again and sent the files using WeTransfer (app which I then deleted).
After an hour or so I connected my phone to a portable charger, and the charging icon and light lit up. I realized after a while that it wasn't actually charging, cause the battery percentage had in fact gone down instead of up.
I didn't worry at the time, but as the day went on I tried different ways of charging it (another person's cable, connecting it to the PC, etc) and the battery kept draining.
When I got home it was at about 10% and I was hysterical, so I connected it with the standard charger that came with the phone, but it didn't charge either. (Though, at ALL times now, it kept showing the 'charging' icon, even when not plugged in).
Then, at about 4% it turned off, I think to avoid running out of battery completely.
I couldn't figure out what the hell happened, but then I thought: COULD IT BE that turning on the USB Debugging Mode made the USB stop working for charging the phone?
So I decided to turn the phone on and turn USB Debugging Mode off ASAP, but now it wouldn't turn on anymore and the 'empty battery' icon appeared.
Soooo, I have a phone with an empty, non-removable battery and I can't even turn it on to fix (what I THINK is, and I could be wrong) the problem. At times, when I plug it in, it has a little plus + sign beside the battery, but it still doesn't charge.
Does anyone know what the problem might be and how I could solve it?
What can I do? Besides CRYING A LOT.

Have you tried another cable (perhaps a friend's that you can verify works) and checked the phone USB port for debris?

I tried two other cables and it didn't work, but I'll keep trying. The USB port seems to be clean. I'll look at it some more, though, with a strong flashlight, see what I can find. Thanks.

Are you using the 18w Boostmaster adapter? Please note only 2.3GHz plus 4G ram (ZE551ML)" is bundled with 18W adapter, while other spec bundled with 7W adapter. Please see http://www.asus.com/us/support/Sear...5-480F-AADA-FE49EDD81C01/?keyword=boostmaster.
18W adapter can purchase here: http://store.asus.com/us/category/A26848
If still unable to power on it will require RMA service.

I bought the 2gb RAM version, which doesn't come with the quick charger, but I just charged it with the normal charger that came with the phone. I didn't need fast charging. It still isn't working, so I'm gonna send it for RMA service this week. I have a question about that: do I need to send the original box with all its contents or just the phone, usb cable and charger? Thanks.

Connect it to a computer with an USB cable while the phone is off. See if it charges that way. If it does, don't turn it on while the charge % is low.

Hi! I tried that, and it shows a charging icon for a while but then turns off again and actually never gets any more battery

Just so you know, activating the USB debugging mode cannot cause your battery issue.
You mentioned that you saw the charging icon being displayed while the cable was unplugged. This makes me think you may have bent/damaged the usb charging socket and some pins inside are doing contact when they aren't supposed to, but I'm not sure since I cannot see your phone.
If the charging port is not damaged, then it's a battery problem. In some cases it can be fixed by physically disconnecting and reconnecting the battery from the motherboard. Beware, this is not easy and if you are not careful you can damage your phone. Also I don't know if this will void your warranty. What you have to do, is disassemble your phone until you have access to the battery, then unplug the battery, wait 1 minute, connect it again and put all pieces back where they belong. This might have a 50% chance of solving your issue.
Disassembly guide: http://www.myfixguide.com/manual/asus-zenfone-2-teardown/ (Do all steps until they remove the battery).
If the usb/charging port isn't damaged, and reconnecting the battery doesn't solve the issue, then your battery is dead, and you have to contact ASUS to get your phone replaced.

Dear Blasterkat101,
Please do not send in original packaging as it may not be returned. For power related issues we recommend sending in power adapter and USB cable with unit. If this is a USA/Canada model Zenfone 2 and you would like me to assist with an RMA, please send a private message to [email protected] with case # N150721539 in the subject line.
Sincerely,
Frank

Thank you so much for answering! It made everything clearer. I was about to dissasemble the phone, but I was afraid I'd void my warranty or leave it in an even worse state than before, so yesterday I sent it for RMA and I'll see if they can fix it. If they can't find problems with it or tell me they can't fix it, I'll have to choose between returning it or keeping it and trying to fix it by myself (but at this time getting my money back would be pretty useful, so..).
Nevertheless, your answer was very useful and so I thank you! If at any time I have the need to dissasemble my Zenfone again I will be able to do it

Thanks, I sent only the phone, cable and adapter yesterday. I'll wait now

I've got an RMA question if you can help. Is there any way to not have to pay the $25 for the RMA? I've got a 3 week old phone and tech support wants me to pay $25 for the process. That seems like a steep price to address a problem with the phone that isn't my fault.
Dan

On a sidenote, never use a cheap powerbank as I had charging issues with another brand phone and it eventually died. Battery charge would jump from 40 to 100. I learned my lesson to only use same brand powerbank/chargers or any quality QuickCharge certified accessories from other brands like LG, Samsung etc

I have the exact same problem. Has anyone been able to fix this or the only solution is to send it to ASUS? My phone is only 45 days old!!!!!

Apologize for the delayed response. Unfortunately the $25 is the processing fee for an advance replacement. If you would like to send in for warranty service there is no charge to you. For more details with advance replacement please see http://www.asus.com/us/support/Article/744

The phone still charges but I have to move the usb cable around a bit to get it right then set it down and not touch it. It won't charge it otherwise.

Have you tried with a different USB cable? If you decide to send in for service it should be covered under warranty but cannot guarantee it. The repair center will determine that once its inspected.

charging
Hi I'm in Mexico and bought an ASUS_Z00AD in Hong Kong, I think is the WW version, I have problems trying to charge the phone, it only charges with the charger that came with the phone (is not the one with 2 A is the 1.35A) , I have tried to charge with two different power banks and even when the light turns to orange and shows the battery icon charging it doesn't charge, the same happened if I try to charge with my computer.
The other day i let the phone completely discharge and took me very long time to power on again.
What can I do

Dead blue angel?? does nothing, need help.

Ok, girlfriend bought a sx66 for her daughter from ebay. Included nothing but phone and battery. She also bought a USB sync/charge cable. Problem is it wont turn on, battery seems totally dead, and it doesn't charge from the USB cable. Also when it is plugged into the PC, I get a USB device error telling me the device wasn't recognized, remove and retry connection or replace the device..
Is it hopeless? Should we try a straight A/C battery charger for the phone?
Can someone tell me the location of the positive and negative terminals on the battery? I would like to try getting some juice into it but they are not labeled on the battery..
Thanks

When I had the USB device error, it turned out to be a bad sync cable.
Does the phone do anything when you plug it in? Assuming that one is looking at the front of the phone, the upper right hand LED should either turn yellow/orange when the phone is charging, green when the battery has a full charge, or red if there is a problem with charging (bad battery, messed up charging circuit, etc). If there is no response, it might be a bad cable, which would cause the USB problem you mentioned above.
If the battery is dead enough, it might take a few minutes before it will power on when it's plugged into some kind of power (usb or standalone charging cable). I had this happen with mine when I got it.
the phone does nothing when plugged in.. no lights at all.
She's gonna try ordering an AC charger and go from there. I do know the data cable was an ebay item so that could be crap.. We're just trying to get anything we can out of the phone so we know if it's usable or junk.
Thanks
I'll post back when we find something out..

G4 Charge/USB port issues

I've had my G4 since almost launch day and within weeks the supplied USB cable stopped charging the phone. I thought it was a cable problem, but it worked fine with other devices.
I tried other cables with the G4 and these still charged it so I thought nothing more of it until charging degraded with every USB cable I own to where the phone would only charge 20-30% during an overnight charge and the phone would frequently not recognise it was plugged in at all. I contacted LG who did a repair under warranty and all was fine.
I've now had the repaired phone back for about 3 weeks and the same problems are starting up again and it's only a matter of time until I am forced to return again for a repair.
Is anyone else having similar problems? I thought I may have just had an unlucky manufacturing problem, and the LG reps confirmed that to repair my phone they basically replace all the internal circuit boards and components rather than just replacing the individual component that is faulty (in this case the USB/charging port)
Basic debugging includes asking stupid questions, so please forgive but still answer any of those
Are you using a different charger? If so, check if that one is within specifications and if you do send in for repair again, use a different charger.
Are you propping up the device at an odd/weird angle or in a dock of some sort with the cable attached?
(As they replaced the entire print, it's probably not this, just the USB-micro port bent or broken.)
You could double check the wall outlets being used, there might be some kind of electrical problem there.
Either using all kinds of fancy electical testing gadgets, or stick a USB light into the hub or charger, does it flicker?
When sending it back for repairs, did they check the stock charger as well?
Hopefully these questions help you find any logical or plausible cause.

Hi FreezyExp,
1. I am using the standard charger that came with the phone, but this has not been repaired/replaced. I have tried other chargers too, but all the same issue.
2. No weird propping up or anything like that. If I hold my phone while it is plugged in it is constantly vibrating as the charger connects and disconnects, and if I place it on the desk to charge I have to ensure that I have at least 3-4" of cabe "on the desk" to give it enough support to make the connection.
3. Wall connection is fine and I have tried it with a range of outlets around the home, both with extension sockets used and plugged directly into the wall and there is no different. No flickering light when using a USB light either.
4. When I sent it back all they asked me to return was the main section of the handset - so no battery or rear cover, no cables or chargers etc
It does seem to be the same issue as last time, a USB connection becoming loose from the main motherboard, but it seems weird that I have had the same issue twice in the space of 4-5 months.
I've been having some sort of problem with my G4 usb port. If I plug it in to a computer, it will lose connection and get a connection again if I barely touch the end of the cord at the phone end. I've tried many different cords and different usb ports on my computer, but it still has problems.
I can't fast charge, either. When I plug it in to fast charge, it actually starts discharging even faster. I've had some extreme battery life problems, too. It drained from 100-36 the other night with everything disabled, and it's been doing that kind of thing a lot lately. I'm guessing that the charging port is what's messing up my battery life because it won't charge correctly.
Never dropped it or anything.
I got my G4 on January 24 and my USB port has also failed. I am getting a replacement from Verizon, but am concerned that a six month old phone has this issue.
I also own a G4 H815. A while ago the phone started not receiving any charge from the cable and I would have to prop it up from right under the cable's micro usb end. Thought it was because it was bent inside the port and not making connection with the cable so I had the port replaced. Now I'm experiencing the same problem and I think it might be the cable that's already gone kaput and is effing up the port itself. I took the phone to the same place to get the port replaced again and bought new cables (I lost both the original adapter and the cable, which were charging slow anyway. Now using a 2A Asus adapter which works great) and when I asked the guy at the repair shop, he says it's a chronic issue with G4 devices. I don't really understand how it would happen twice in just a few months even with a new charger port. What should I make of this? Did they replace my port with an already faulty one, cahrged me full price and now trying to sell this bogus or am I really doomed with this phone?

Zenfone wont charge

yesterday i put my phone to charge while slepping and i had some technical problems with electricity in my home so the power kept coming and going so my charger got fried and my zenfone wont charge anymore with any adapter i tried using 4 others charge, tried connecting to pc, tried turning it on but still my zenfone wont turn on. when i press power button it makes 2 vibration it shows like its charging and the led than turns off. I know something in the phone got fried and i send it to service but they said they dont have parts, so im going to buy them online but i dont know what it got fried (usb port, battery or motherboard).
Sorry for my bad english and thnks in advance
Same here. I think i have the same, but my adapter haven't fried and is healthy 3 port wall charger. I have even changed the battery, cause of this problem. Asus shop send me a new one because of this, free of charge!
But even then it doesn't work. There are moments when i can turn it on and charge, but its random. I thought it was Android related, but haven't found out anything..
I can turn and charge it sometimes, don't know yet when..
But the Battery release i think helps (Unplugging Battery connector from battery, no need to take it out).
Have tried many of tips, guides, nothing.. Nothing helps..
I'm starting to think that mobo has been damaged somehow.
I got it one time to charge fully, don't understand how. Once i plugged in and saw that it charged at last, i didn't turn it on and left it there till full. Once charged it, kind of charged when i plugged in (at about 60% battery), and in Ampere there was normal Current (about 1000mA), but it didn't really charge, just drained..
Please guys, would appreciate this!
And a lot of people in youtube too. There has been no answer for this problem.
I'm assuming your already tried with different cables? If you are lucky and just the micro USB port section got fried, a replacement costs 5 bucks on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Charging-Po...169886?hash=item1a030a819e:g:aowAAOSwDNdVqKyi
When something in my ZF2 fried all of the USB data functionality was gone, but it would still charge at slow rate. I RMA'd it and after ~2 months they sent me a new phone; did not mention what exactly was wrong with the old one.
Then a while later I dropped it on the floor while it was charging - it landed straight on the micro USB cable side and the impact dislodged the USB port ripping some of the lanes off the PCB so I could not solder it back, and of course then it would not charge at all. I bought one of those charging dock replacements I mentioned and with that replaced it started working again.
It might be a damage data flex cable. That data cable with simcad slots and micro sd need to be replaced to be able to charges again and working fast charging.
my zenfone phone is not charging what do i do

Quick Charge and PC connection stopped working

I was on a vacation and accidentally quick charging stopped working there. I had QC 2.0 charger from Samsung with me and I was using it for months without any issues before, but the phone just stopped charging with this charger. It often shows it starts charging when connecting it, but almost immediately the charging disappears. Other phone that doesn't support QC works fine with this Samsung charger and my G4 can be charged with a normal non-QC charger fine too.
I thought it is Samsung charger what broke, but I returned home and tried G4 with Chinese QC2 charger that worked before, although now it charges my G4 (unlike Samsung charger), but only at 5V voltage, it doesn't switch to 9V. So it seems something happened with the phone what caused that QC stopped working. I tried other cables and batteries without any change..
Do you have any idea what might happened or how to fix it? I have v29a Nougat with Kesseras kernel. Wiping data partition with cache&dalvik didn't help.
EDIT: so it seems it is not only QuickCharge, but also cable connection to my PC doesn't work - either the phone doesn't appear in the device manager at all, or sometimes it appears as unknown device. It only charges from the PC. Is something wrong with my USB connector in the phone?
Hi, I had the same problem as you, the only solution is to change the charging connector.

if you have warranty, deal with it, if you have not, take it to an unofficial technical service that usually costs more than € 30

Unfortunately I don't have a warranty, so I guess I should be happy that at least normal charging is working for now and when also that stops working, I should try to some service to replace the port...

ANOTHER RMA for USB????

For the last week device has wonky charging. Wouldn't even notice stock c to c cable plugged in. Would charge with a to c after reboot. Fast charge ok on c to c car charger. Then not, or only after reboot.
Google is sending a new charger, but that's not the problem. ( Just opened the last one the sent me before previous device started smoking). Finally got home after 2 weeks (hurricane). Tried several chargers/cables. Plug in a reboot
Will talk to PC for file transfer and such.
No alarm this morning. Was on charger when I went to bed. Guess it shut down by itself at 100%.
Had that quick bug a few weeks ago...noticed battery saver turned on by itself.
Any chance any if this is software with latest updates? Thinking this is my 3 rd device now with USB port issues.
Ohh...just checked. Headphone adapter not recognized.....AGAIN.
Google is good about replacing, but can't the fix that port?
Worst part....finally got my $50 Whitestone done installed. So now I have to order another replacement kit for the replacement Pixel 2 XL.
Clean the connector. That is often all it is.
Give it a small spray of electrical cleaner...
I had the same problem. They installed a new motherboard in the device and gave it back to me.
Thanks for input.
Gave it a few shots of deoxit contact cleaner and some light cleansing with small toothpick.
Seemed to work for a little bit. Then random reboots while plugging in various chargers and cables. One option even caused it to boot when plugged in.
Headphone adapter only worked 1 out of 50; tties.
Did you recently upgrade to Pie?
I had this exact problem as well.
It started when I upgraded (stock).
Spoke with Google rep and they know about the issue.
Downgraded and the issue persists.
Seems like the software update is breaking internal hardware?
Had to RMA mine.
Possible bad cable or non USB PD compliant powered source or cable fried something in the charge circuit? Maybe invest in a USB-C power meter.
Just finishing up setup on replacement device before RMA of defective device. But.....
Factory reset, and it works fine!!!!!
Normally they make you do that before sending a replacement. But in my case phone wouldn't even charge with phone off. How can any kind of software be a culprit if the is isn't even loaded????
I just got my replacement. I had usb hardware failure. Tried three cords and two computers and would only charge. Replacement fixed it
