I recently acquired a Sony Xperia C6506 (ZL LTE). Before I start playing around with this phone, i need to offload some photos. I'm trying to connect the phone to my laptop running Windows 7 via the USB. My system does not recognize the phone. I'm assuming it's because I don't have the correct driver on my windows system . (I've also tried "PC Companion but had no luck there either). I searched the Sony web site for a driver but did not see a specific one for the C6506. Does anyone know where I can find the correct driver for the USB on Windows 7? Or does anyone have any other ideas why this might not be working?
Thanks
I have the same phone and windows 7 recoginzed it and installed the driver by itself. Didn't remember if it downloaded it or found it from the system. Perhaps you can try the PC companion software from Sony.

Thanks for the reply - I've loaded PC Companion and in step two, it never recognizes the device.

What happens when you connect the phone to your PC? Anything? Do you see any messages popping up? Any errors? Do you see it in device manager? Also, do you see any messages on your phone when you plug it in? What USB connection mode is set in your phone's settings? In general, MTP should be the most universal method.
I have the same phone, and it is recognized perfectly by Windows 7 (at work) and Windows 8.1 (at home). When you install Sony PC Companion, it includes the proper drivers, so you don't need to do anything extra (you do need additional drivers for flash mode and ADB, but that's a different topic). I would suggest trying another PC, to see if it makes any difference. If it still doesn't work, it might be something with your phone...
As an alternative, you can use a WiFi connection to access your files on the phone. I often use either ES File Explorer or Software Data Cable - they both provide an FTP service that you can connect to from your PC over WiFi.
Have you tried with another cable? My Xperia is recognized perfectly out-of-the-box on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, as soon as I connect it, PC starts to search and download drivers, no PC Companion installed nor Flashtool drivers. :/

Yeah, that would be a good option to start, forgot to mention it. I've seen bad USB cables quite a few times, more often than I'd expect...
Thanks again for the quick replies and the suggestions cause they worked - it was the cable. The cable I was using was capable of charging the phone but did not allow Windows to recognize it. I used a different cable and it worked fine. Tharnks again. Now the fun begins changing the phone into a media playing device. If you have any suggestions on this I'm all ears.
Thanks

This has been an ongoing issue on my Arc.
It is like nearly impossible to connect my phone to PC.
I have tried via wireless, and when connecting vis USB, I have to unplug my phone about 20 + times before it finds it and lets me into the files.
Why is this? Is this an Xperia issue, or is this a windows 7 issue?
Is there a work around for this yet, its driving me insane. At both work and home it takes forever to get my phone to connect to pc.
thanks, Amanda
I have exactly the same problem. Both hotspot and usb tethering only connect to local internet. It has connected to the internet before but lately nothing. We have 2 Arcs and they both have the same problem. We have windows vista.

Try multi mount sd on market
Just download ,put widget on home screen toggle it on and connect phone via usb
Done ,access to all ur files

I only had trouble connecting via PC Companion and that piece of crap managed to brick my phone when trying to update to 2.3.4 so I took the plunge and unlocked the boot loader. I have had no problems connecting with Fastboot, Flash Tool or just connecting as a mass storage device (although this can take 10-20 seconds before it registers). The laptop I use for the phone runs XP.
Did you find it hard to unlock the bootloader and will this void my warranty??
I use Win 7 Ultimate and it finds my Arc instantly when connected to USB (have not tried any other method). Same on both PCs I use. So it might not be the OS. It could be firewall or antivirus. I use Windows firewall and Microsoft Essentials, but others may be more strict.
Windows Vista and wi-fi is the whole other story. Vista just keeps thinking of new ways how to play with your nerves when it comes to any wi-fi functionality. I for one could not persuade it to connect to internet via WI-FI, it just let me connect to the local network. I therefore skipped it and went straight from XP to Win 7.

There are guides on here on how to do it (I would advise against following SE own guide as it is too involved). The biggest issue for me was, of course, getting the PC to see the phone in Fastboot mode. Once I had solved this issue (using device manager on the PC to install the drivers) it was easy.
Yes it could void your warranty. If you make a mess updating your phone by flashing custom ROMs then this would not be covered. Also if you overclock you CPU to 2.5gHz and melt it that would not be covered. I would guess that manufacturing faults would still be covered but ALL modification is at your own risk. I was comfortable to do this as I have installed lots of custom ROMs from my time as a ZTE Blade and SE X10 owner. At the moment there are not that many modifications that are available but with SE announcing they are supporting the Devs I am sure that will change.
maybe becuase you got mtp set instead of mass storage?
Try MyPhoneExplorer ...
Peace.

I changed it over to mass storage and it seemed to connect to my work laptop straight away. I will try this when I get home on my home pc, Thanks so much to everyone for your help.
Greetings!
Past couple of weeks when trying to connect my Arc to the PC it will not pick it up. It charges OK with the green light showing on the side but absolutely no indication from PC or laptop that a phone is connected.. I have 3 different cables and another laptop - having tried all the cables on both machines - still no joy.
No notification in the pull down - nada!
Reinstalled Win7 and factory reset phone half a dozen times - still nothing!
Running Win7 64bit but have never had issues with OS previously up until a few weeks ago!
Service provider was as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike!
Anyone know a solution?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply TheHaso. Should have mentioned I have tried with Companion installed and not installed, updater installed and not installed. With debug on & off, MTP on & off, MSC on & off, storage mounted/unmounted.
Really strange to be honest!
check your 'Device Manager' on your desktop,, it will show you if any hardware connected and not working propely.
right click and try update driver if show caution on portable devices.

Also tried this for a solution buddy.. Thought it was a USB driver had slipped off or something.
Truly baffled! If it's charging fine then why would pc companion not detect it :-S

I'm sure you must have already done that but may be try updating with a different driver and see if it could solve problem. I know because it also happened to me.

Greetings, which other driver would you be referring to? I have literally tried everything but still no detection from PC in MTP or MSC.

Uninstall the driver from device manager, then restart the pc and connect to another usb port
From my sexy LT15i
This will work...
I have almost the same problem on my ARC.
Download MyPhoneExplorer on your PC and install it.
Download MyPhoneExplorer Client from the market and install it on your phone.
Turn on USB debugging and connect your phone with your PC.
This works on my arc and i guess it will work on you phone as well..

i got an S3.. and my computer has xp pro. i had to restore my computer recently from a saved image of my system. before i restored my computer, i was able to connect my S3 to it via USB with no problem. but after i restored it, i'm unable to.
i downloaded and installed the MTP driver, which got my computer to recognize my phone before i restore it. but now its not working and i dont see it listed in Device Manager. whats weird is that when i connect my S3 to my computer, the phone doesnt give any notifications that the phone is connected to USB like it used to before. and it also doesnt give me the 2 options of connecting by either MTP or Camera. all it does is charge my phone. how do i fix this?

You also might get the pdanet usb driver and install that in your PC in order to get the usb to recognize an internet access via USB.
You should be able to download the USB driver from PDANet's website.
Just a "maybe" thought. Hope it helps!
You might first want to check this link out:

I have tried it on both my PC and laptop with both windows 10. Does not work. My PC also has windows 7 still seems to not work. Are there any other drivers i might be missing?
i have also done some research that you should update your drivers from device manager. I dont see anything related to my device. i went to portable devices nothing and i dont have a other devices section in device manager. Any help?
What recovery?
Try to flash latest twrp. I use blu-spark by eng-stk. You can fla**** thru recovery or Flashify app.

ive also found out theres no kedcom driver when i go to fastboot. i even reinstalled adb drivers to insure its there but it does not pop up.
You'll need to remove drivers reboot, install correct drivers, reboot and then be nice to everyone you ever meet and it'll show up. It's a real pain but you can get there. XDA tutorial all the way there!
I once have kind of youre problem connecting to my laptop (win.10). But, at work, on that laptop, connection was ok (win.7).
I reinstal windows 10 and connection works fine, since.
I allways use latest TWRP & version of rom. I can't tell for sure what it's goin on with youre phone.
If i was in youre situation i format my phone (this will erase ALL in youre phone). And if PC still does not see the phone reinstall windows.
Also: Try a different cable.
A cheap cable could have a charging pin layout but lack data pins connections.
9 out of 10 issues with connecting to PC and getting odd behaviours is due to a bad/wrong cable.

I used the OnePlus cable and another cable.
Driver issues win 10
Find the excellent tutorial here on drivers.
For some reason my phone didn't show up but was able to receive commands. It was frustrating because I wanted to use the all in one XDA product but couldn't.
Even if you installed drivers they can be broken!
Do drivers from scratch per xda tutorial. Don't forget reboot!
Try different cables and usb ports! My front ones never seem to work!
Don't just try fastboot commands also try adb. Like I said mine wasn't seen properly yet it took the commands.
Unless your windows is a years old install it shouldn't require reinstall.
Factory phone reset might help.
Best of luck!

As regards the attaching of files, you have to have a minimum number of posts to be able to do that.
As regards the USB, be a little more specific like what you are trying to do, which ROM you are running, whether you are rooted, what happens when you connect the phone to PC etc which will enable the members to help you.
There could be several reasons for this, but lets start with the basics.
Have you tried a different cable?
Have you selected File Transfer (MTP) from usb options?

I get a windows sound like its connecting then in the bottom right where the time is next to that is a root sign then I get a pop up saying exactly.....The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. Recommendation.. Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, your device may not be working properly. When I go to the Device Manager/Control Panel it doesnt do anything. I've tried to add adb to the path but maybe added it to wrong path now it won't come on. If there is a work around maybe to re-add to right path. Device Manager was fine before I added adb and added path as per internet search. Device Manager before would say something like error 39. I've tried MTP that doesn't get it to open up either.

I cant even root for the life of me now, Im on 8.0, I'm trying to just root the phone and to start the computer has to recognize it I understand but it won't, with my Oneplus 2 was fine,(I'm thinking maybe phone doesnt have the drivers built in to the file system, you know when you plug in and turn on MTP it shows the drivers app for Windows?) the only thing it errors plugging in.

On my son's pc running windows 10, I didn't have any issues connecting my OP3 to it and viewing files, nor did I have to install any drivers, same for Windows 7.
Hook phone to pc via usb cable.
Pull down notification bar and select "File Transfer" from usb options or go to Settings and search USB and select USB Preferences > File Transfer.
Browse phone from Window's file manager.
If still having issues, you can try and install Oneplus USB drivers, reboot pc and see if the phone can be recognized.

If you are running Win 10, you will have to disable driver signing before the correct drivers are installed. May be that was your issue.
