[Q] Sprint SGS3 flashed to PagePlus = Sprint or Verizon roms? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I have recently acquired a Sprint SGS3 SPH-L710. It was still original stock at 4.4.2, never rooted. i flashed the n2j stock rom through odin, and then I had it flashed from Sprint to PagePlus and it is working okay (still need to get 3g going) Then used cm-autoroot and installed twrp (debating on installing philz). Now the phone is ready for some rom action.
My question is since this phone is a d2spr, but flashed to PagePlus (Verizon), would it be safe or better to install a d2vzn rom vs d2spr rom?
From my research, there are settings in the roms that are molded to a specific carrier. If I am on Verizon, I do not want to install and have Sprint related settings (buildprop?) and apps, etc. Then flashing a Sprint SGS3 to Pageplus vs a Verizon SGS3, Sprint must be set to NV only, and other posts and forums (on xda and howards), I have read said this nv setting could be changed when flashing a rom, which would break the PagePlus flash. But if I install a d2vzw rom, everything else would be molded to Verizon, which is great since I am using a Verizon network. I suppose it depends on how much molding is being done and what exactly. Then of course, I do not want to brick the device flashing the wrong version. If the roms were only listed as d2lte, I wouldnt mind as much, but I have noticed some roms do have a Sprint version and a Verizon version, but I can not locate the details to compare the differences.

I would still stick with what your phone is if d2spr flash the d2spr here is a thread that looks like some stuff you will want to try prl apns mms

Flashing a d2vzw build will not trick the phone to think it is a vzw phone just more chances of you ending up with a brick.

I am now having a problem updating the APN in any 5.x rom, says not enough permissions. I tried a handful of APN apps on Google play, made them system apps, etc. it never saves or changes the apn settings. I can change and save APN in KK roms just fine though.

Did you try on WiFi it could be cause not picking up data connection
This is why I stopped flashing cdma phones to alternate carriers I had a epic4g on cricket pita if I didn't have the apn fix

I hear you and agree 100% with flashing to alternate carriers. I would not normally do this myself, but considering I got this cell for free a couple weeks ago, I figured I might as well deal with the hassle and make the best of it.
The only problem is that I still haven't found a 100% fix. I been flashing 4.4.x roms and 5.1.1 roms trying various APN settings, apps, changes, tips, etc. Nothing seems to stick or crash when attempting to change it. Trust me I been digging all over Google, XDA, and other various droid forums.
My carrier is PagePlus/vzw, and I can not find a PagePlus APN flashable file, hmm maybe I can come across a generic Vzw one, otherwise I know the settings to put in to create a new one though. This is why I was inquirying on flashing a Verizon S3 rom in the first place. Hopefully I can come across something soon.

When I get off work I'll try to help you out

Evo on Cricket + flashing a rom = ?

I'm weary to post this in the Q&A section for fear it won't be seen much, but here goes:
I have a friend who has an Evo that had been flashed onto Cricket. She has applied the OTA update and is on 2.3. I do not know if she's rooted or not, but that shouldn't matter. Anyways, question: if I flash a new rom for her, will it get rid of or keep her Cricket flash? I have absolutely zero experience with unlocks/flashes to other carriers, but I am in no way an "Android nub" (I make roms, bro )
Bump.

flashing roms will not overwrite the "flash" to Cricket. The only thing that will happen when you flash a new rom is you will likely need to change the MMS server settings in the messaging apps to get MMS working again, since all roms pretty much assume you're on Sprint, not Cricket.
That's all I thought I would have to change - just making sure.
Thanks!

[Q] CSpire GS3 SCH-L710 rom???

Hey guys
CSpire Wireless formerly Cellular South has finally released their Galaxy S3. The model number is SCH-L710. The reason I am asking this question here and not in a different carriers forum is the L710 in model number. I don't pretend to understand why certain carriers GS3's are labeled with different model numbers, but I thought that since your GS3 and mine both have L710 I thought that possibly the hardware was closer to the same than say verizon's which is a completely different model designation. That being said I am desperate for a custom rom but don't wanna just go flashing any GS3 roms out there to see if any will work on my network. I would feel more comfortable knowing that I had a way to odin flash a stock rom in case any problems arise. Anyway if someone is kind enough and generous enough to help me locate a stock odin flashable rom, then I would be willing to help in any way I can to find a usable rom or port for my version of this great phone.
Thank you so much in advance
I went ahead and flashed the latest CM10 nightly for the Sprint version. Everything seems to be fine, except for data. I still have data, but it is very flaky and won't hardly hold a signal. I suspect it to be the PRL or CM itself.
We definitely need a stock rom for CSpire. I am willing to help any way I can.

Good luck finding that. Cspire keeps things like that unattainable. Unless *228 will work properly to update prl. Should anyone come across it please let me know. Bout to flash CM10
What about using QPST or something to pull the PRL off of a stock device? Can we get someone to do this before flashing any ROMs?
Okay. First of all, I didn't think to look at the PRL before I went and flashed the Sprint CM10. But now it says 20005. I restored my nandroid backup and pulled this PRL from my phone with QPST 2.7.374. In DFS Tool, I noticed there was a CSpire PRL 10009. I wrote this PRL to the Phone and am getting much better service on the stock TW ROM.
HOWEVER, I flashed the Sprint CM10 again and the same thing happened. It says PRL 10009, but there is little to no service and when it does have a little service, it is very flaky and eventually ends up with no data connection at all. Any more suggestions or ideas?

after a few hours of trying to get my phone into diagnostic mode i found this that worked. *#22745927 then enable hidden menu then *#7284#
now i think i need to find a newer version of qpst so that it will recognize my phone.

qpst still says no phone under the phone column no matter what i try
So far, this is what I have done:
First I used the following tool to download drivers for my phone and root ( via option 4 in the program).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746680
I used CWM to make a nandroid backup.
Next, I flashed the latest CM nightly for the Sprint version here:
http://get.cm/?device=d2spr
After doing this, everything worked fine, EXCEPT for data. I dialed *228 and let it do its thing. I actually had data, but the signal was extremely weak and very flaky. After messing with settings it would usually drop it altogether.
I restored my nandroid backup and noticed that although I had data, it seemed to be weaker than before ( although that may just be me).
I decided to follow the following guide on how to get the PRL from the phone:
http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-m/419514-how-get-prl-off-your-phone.html
The version of QPST on that post was outdated, so I found and used QPST 2.7.374, which I posted a link to earlier in the thread.
I managed to copy the 20005 PRL off of my phone and saved it.
I then started up DFS Tool and wrote the CSpire 10009 PRL to my phone.
I get much better service on the stock ROM, but the Sprint CM builds still do the same thing. No data.
UPDATE: I did a *228 to get back on the 20005 PRL and it is working just as well as the 10009 PRL now.
Also, as OBSt4l0n discovered, there's simultaneous voice and data. Not sure if anyone else has noticed this or if this was happening before flashing roms
and PRL's.
Okay. We no longer believe it's the PRL causing the problems. More info to come. May be slower over the weekend with weekend stuff and all.

Out of curiosity, Could it be the APN's causing the issues? And from what I've seen the vzw variant seems closer to the cspire. but its hard to say. Just to try and eliminate possible causes, I would reccomend flashing this here and see if you get the same issues. http://goo-inside.me/devs/aokp/d2vzw/aokp_d2vzw_jb_build-4.zip Its AOKP for the vzw variant. I have used it as my daily driver for the past week and I'm on Sprint. Dont have to change anything in it, just flash.
Just my 2 cents

Thanks. I'm tempted to try this but the only problem is I don't have a way of going back to stock. I did, however make a backup through cwm but I wish there was an absolute stock cspire rom out there. I would love to test out developer's roms and provide feedback if somebody knows where I could get a stock rom to flash for cspire's gs3....

Just tried this and still no data. We need a dev to look into this. Apparently there is something internal in code stopping our radio from functioning properly. I have attempted to pull my RIL file and insert it in cm10 then rebooting and no luck. Still no data. Any devs out there willing to look into this for us?

The tutorial for Rooting and all these ROMs present in android development section, are they the same for the T-989D Canadian version? Flashing them would work? I'm pretty sure that if something can be flashed on T989 (T-Mobile), it can be flashed on T989D (Telus/Koodo). I understand that the are just some small differences wrt access to download mode and recovery. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079776
btw, I have a T989D on Koodo

I have a T989D on Koodo which I've been messing with quite extensively, and yeah, everything is basically the same. The download/recovery mode linked above is the only major difference.
One thing of note, if you end up messing up the device and need to fully reflash from Odin, the t-mobile stock may not work. I tried over and over to recover from what was essentially a brick (ultra, ultra slow) and it just stayed that slow, even though it did seem to boot and connect and everything. It was totally unusable, however.
I found a different one that did work however, I can't seem to find the post anymore but I'm sure you'll be able to get it if you need it, there seem to be others out there with the same name, but not quite the same filesize. That shouldn't really matter as you'll doubtless go back to a custom rom anyway, the point is just to get you back to something that works.
For reference, the name of the one that worked for me is "SGH-T989_UVLH1_Stock_Odex_zipaligned_signed.zip" and it's 422 MB. This post seems to have a Koodo stock zip as well as the T-mobile one, it's about 100MB less but again, that really shouldn't matter so long as it's Koodo.
Hopefully you'll never need to use it, but I just wanted to let you know that even if you have to recover and some files don't seem to be working, keep trying, because the correct ones are out there! Just may need to search a bit for 'em

A few more things SGH-T989D owners may want to be aware of:
1) This is an excellent resource: [ROM][Stock]T989UVLI4 (4.0.4) ♛ T989DTLLE4 (4.0.3) ♛ T989DTLLG2[ODIN][TWRP/CWM]
2) You might want to search and replace all "T989" with "T989D" in build.prop
" " replace all "TLLG2" with whatever radio your new ROM is using.
If you're on Koodo you might want to assign that to the ro.carrier property
3) If you've got a data plan with you might want to search the web for your carrier's apn info and insert it into "Settings|Wireless & networks|Mobile networks"
Note: This stuff is optional in the sense that your stuff is probably going to work if you don't make these changes. I haven't always updated all this after switching to a new custom rom, but I did notice that I showed up on the Telus network as a T989 as opposed to a T989D on the Koodo network. Really they're the same network but ... I don't know. Maybe I just over think things... I do like the fact that when I plug my phone into the computer or go to the play store or whatever that my phone reports as what it actually is and what radio it uses etc. I don't really care that much as long as my stuff works and I have access to apps that are appropriate for the hardware I'm using. YMMV.
Note2: Most of this info can be gleaned from your stock rom's "CSC" folder and build.prop file. When I have a little more time I'll write this up so its more understandable for those new to flashing Roms. Just wanted to mention that there are a few other tiny, nearly insignificant differences btw the T989 and T989D so that the OP and/or others can address these points if they choose to. At least not be surprised if it looks as though they're using data on a network with a different phone.
Note3: Maybe the only thing that matters is an imei number from your SIM. I don't really know. Be glad to be "told" by anyone that knows. I just know that these things are different even if they don't make a bit of difference in practice.
Re:Koodo SGH-T989D
Hello I'm new to posting on the forums, sorry If I've missed the answer to this question already!
I have a Koodo SGH-T989D that I got in September, before that I was using a non smart flip phone . So I'm quite new to this whole rom business, but even android/ smart phone os in general.
I've been able to flash many roms in the past couple months and have a good understanding of what it is i'm doing. Never had an issue I couldnt fix myself actually, so I've never made an account.
This latest problem has me puzzled though, I've totally lost data connection on my s2x while using any radio. I use SGH-T989D_TLLG2_Koodo_radio but I tried UVLI4 just to see.
However I did change a few things up from my usual routine to flash 4.2.1
1: changed twrp to 2.4.1.0 from 2.2 cwm flashable zip
2: moved all my zips to sd card and formatted internal memory(to eliminate possible issues)
Before this I was using twrp 2.2 and only doing a clean install, not formatting internal sd without any issues or instability.
I've been on [4.2.1 | 4.2.2] AOKP :: jb-mr1 :: build 3 and very impressed with it, except this one issue.
In the thread there is a post that refers to getting data working with koodo, so I think its an apn/proxy setting. I just am not sure where I would have to change these settings.
Just restored a recent nandroid backup and everything works fine.
Can anyone help me out, any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Check here for Koodo APN settings: http://koodomobile.com/en/on/switch2koodo-step-3-c.shtml
Go to settings > wireless and network, more... > mobile networks > access point names > then hit your options button > New APN > enter the details found on the page linked above.
Hope that solves it for you.
Re:Koodo SGH-T989D
Thank you so much, worked right away!
The reason I didnt just look up koodo apn settings is because I had no idea what they were.
And Until now I've never had an issue.
Is this something to do with aokp 4.2 or is it because I formatted my internal storage?
Since mid December I've tried out about 5 or 6 roms just to see how they compared to stock. And all I have to say is wow!
Thank you to all those who make this possible, it really is a great community.
I was on stock koodo rom and unrooted until december because my charge port stopped working after like 3 months...? So I went looking for info and I was brought here, haven't looked back since.
When to check for proper apn info?

Ususally associated with radio upgrades; but rather than get too particular, its good practice to check the apn info after any ROM upgrade. If you think about it, any of the hercules upgrades are going to be the same across the board for any given update. Where they're different is where we want to pay particular attention. In this case, carrier specific information.

What did you use to root it? The Sprint ROMs should work since it is a brother of the sprint model with a few tweeks for strait talk. But with the GS2 from strait talk that was a ATT type phone you still had to use a different recovery to get it to work but you could use any of the ROMs..... so any info on how you flashed Slimbean would be great, thanks
I'm also wondering if the sprint s3 options in the galaxy toolkit are ok to use on sch-s960l...I read that the camera may not function...also I WILL donate to anyone one who can provide step by step, comprehendable instructions to root and flash slim bean with no issues.

This post should work. (QBKing77's video here) All I did was copy SuperUser zip file to the phone, ODIN'd ClockworkMod to the phone, rebooted to CWM, flashed the SuperUser, rebooted and it was rooted. Really not much to it, seemed too easy to me, but it stuck, didn't lose root after reboot.
I did notice some wonky data issues once I flashed SlimBean. My first post was edited to show that it pretty much locked onto whatever tower I was closest to at the time of the flash, so when I was driving around, once I lost connectivity to that tower, I had no data. Still could call but no data. Had to reflash SlimBean to connect to the next tower, but again, lost it since I was still driving around. Back to rooted Stock now.
Lately I've been trying to install CM 10 but they have a check to see if your phone's build.prop file has the SPH-L710 value in it (ro.phonecode or something), and obviously since we don't have sprint phones, ours says SCH-S960L. I edited the build.prop file and put the sprint code in there, but then it said the ro.bootloader value was incorrect. That line isn't even in the StraightTalk's build.prop so I added it, but it still didn't want to flash.
Next step is to edit the ROM itself and remove those checks. Kinda skeptical about that, since they're there for a reason. But, for the sake of research/advancement of mankind, I'm gonna try it anyway.

You can edit the assert prop in the updater script of any d2spr rom. I personally use root browser from the rom toolbox from jrummy. Extract the rom, then go to META-INF>com>google>android>updater script. Open the script as an editable text document. You will see the ro.bootloader lines. Simply take out those lines, or modify them for your specific bootloader. If you downloaded the official update when you activated your phone, it will more than likely be S960LWYAMD6. Save it, then simply rezip everything, and flash. That's it. Just remember it's probably not a good idea to try this with any rom that includes bootloader or modem updates. But you SHOULD be fine with anything cyanogen-based. It's worked flawlessly for me but all phones are different, so use cation and always flash at your own risk.... Well, hope this helps some people out there. I've been having this same issue for a while and couldn't find anything that helped, until I got bored one day and just started messing around with random stuff. Haha. Happy flashing
I just need to root this damn phone...
I simply want to root my SCH-S960L. That seems to be way too much to ask on XDA...
Stock Recovery
Hey guys!
Just wondering what my options are for getting the upcoming update to Android 4.3. I have a rooted SCH-S960L on the stock rom with CWM recovery (Touch version) 6.x....I was told that I would need the stock recovery installed in order to install the upcoming 4.3 OTA, but how do I do this? Where can I get the recovery.tar for use w/ODIN to reinstall the stock recovery? If I use KIES to reinstall the factory firmware will this also reinstall the stock recovery? Could I use the Sprint L710 stock recovery.tar since this is essentially the same phone? What should I do?
Anyone with helpful info PLEASE HELP!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!
^^bump^^

I've read on that Straight Talk doesn't update their phones at all. So what is on it is what will stay on it unless there are custom roms for them. Which I am currently looking for. The topic I read it in mentioned a gingerbread phone that was never updated despite the same phone on other carriers being updated. The ST Customer Service forum had a post saying check their Terms and Conditions(which not sure what that had to do with updating their phone).

ask your favorite rom devs to add this to their d2spr device trees. it will make it so that there wont be any more need to edit updater scripts, i already sent this info to carbon rom d2spr dev. if/when he merges you guys will be able to use carbon rom without editing anything, just flash in recovery
edit: seems CM will be the first http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/54652/ starting nov 27th you can download sprint d2spr builds and with a sprint based recovery they will flahs just fine for you guys.
Straight Talk does update their phones. The S3 was updated by Straight Talk not long after Sprint updated their S3 to 4.1.2.

I REALLY NEED SOMEONE TO DO A /system pull and post up the complete factory firmware files for download...full firmware, stock recovery, etc.
If I knew exactly how/what to do I would go buy my wife's phone Friday and do a pull from it and post it up for all who need it.

how did you root the sch s960l I have this phone and I want to root it bad. I emailed customer service at straight talk and they told me they would not be updating the phone to 4.3
They also said that the phone woukd be stuck on ICS also...
As for rooting use SKUNKAPE1's guide on here for rooting the Sprint S3. The only addition to his step-by-step is to install STERRICSON's version of BusyBox once you finish up with the TeamEpic root.
Will tell you though that most of the Sprint S3 roms will not be fully functional on this phone however...everything usually works except the cammera/gallery app. Xposed framework mods do work very well however.

Another carrier's rom on Sprint Note 4

Ive done a lot of reading in regards to this. almost every place I read says other roms should flash on device not of those carriers. reason im investigating this is because CM for sprint has all the sms issues. and after reading through all the tmo roms im not seeing anyone mention sms issues. every time I try to flash another carriers rom it reads that they are carrier specific and fail. is there a way I can make another carriers rom flash to sprint. my device is unlocked, though im using a sprint sim for lte and from what im reading also, its just a matter of an apn setting for sprint, and/or a radio flash for sprint. anyways, comments?

I wouldn't flash another carriers roms. it can make your phone brick and just a paper weight. other carriers have different settings and files that our phone doesn't..i don't know how to explain it better but I don't recommend it

That is kind of unfortunate if that's the case that SMS doesn't work right out of the gate on Sprint CM ROM's then. While I have gotten used to it, it does get annoying after a while having to reconfigure using the *#*#4636#*#* method every time.
I have tried to flash a few other carrier based ROMs via TWRP but they typically fail anyways (which is probably a good thing). I don't think I've ever actually successfully flashed another carrier based ROM through TWRP.

You can't just flash a tmobile rom on this device. It sounds like to me you need to get your phone unlocked to use tmobile sim. I would suggest http://www.idoneapps.com to sim unlock your phone.
I have no idea what you mean by password screen. What firmware are you on? How did you root your phone? Did you turn off reactivation lock?
I can try to help you but i need to know more detail of your problem. And do understand I'm limited on time i spend here. I'll check back when i can.
