Evo on Cricket + flashing a rom = ? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm weary to post this in the Q&A section for fear it won't be seen much, but here goes:
I have a friend who has an Evo that had been flashed onto Cricket. She has applied the OTA update and is on 2.3. I do not know if she's rooted or not, but that shouldn't matter. Anyways, question: if I flash a new rom for her, will it get rid of or keep her Cricket flash? I have absolutely zero experience with unlocks/flashes to other carriers, but I am in no way an "Android nub" (I make roms, bro )

Bump.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App

flashing roms will not overwrite the "flash" to Cricket. The only thing that will happen when you flash a new rom is you will likely need to change the MMS server settings in the messaging apps to get MMS working again, since all roms pretty much assume you're on Sprint, not Cricket.

That's all I thought I would have to change - just making sure.
Thanks!

Switching ROMs and pre rooted kernel

I have done some reading, so if I missed a link with the answer, pass it on...
So I am currently using ZedomaxEpicTouchKernel[v3][1.6GhzOC][Quadrant 4500+][SU3][CWM]
I am looking at ROMs now, even though I said that I wouldn't, and it seems like the ROMs come with their own kernels.
I want to do a 2.3.5 ROM, possibly cyanogen, but don't want to lose the 1.6g kernel.
Do I flash the custom ROM, then just odin the zedomax kernel over it?
This is my first sammy phone, if it was a moto I wouldn't even be posting.
Thanks
PS - my CWR only backs up/restores after I pull the battery out (then it starts working). Any advice on this is appreciated too.
I'm in the same in the same boat. I am from an EVO 4g and I guess am used to just flashing that in that method.
I'm not exactly sure what to do here either. I sent a google+ message to max, but I really don't even expect him to respond.
Where r u getting that 2.3.5 rom? Was it baked for THIS device? U can't just flash any rom onto the device. Look at development section for roms 4 this device.
Cyanogen has not been brought to this device yet, but here's hoping.
Someone else correct me if I'm wrong.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
He is looking for a rom.. Drop the 2.3.5. He clearly does not mean it.. However his question and the reason for this topic remains..
For example, I am running AE (So I assume bubby's kernal + CWM), but I would like to use the zedomax overclock kernal V3. However anything and everything I thought I knew about flashing seems to be gone... It isn't bad I just need pointed in the right direction so that I can educate myself on what is going on here.
I assume this has to do with the root method. Simply because I don't understand why my recovery is attached to my kernal. I'm used to just running CWM.. Again. I'm lost.
Yeah, I think I see what you mean. My last two devices were htc so I'm kinda lost too. I guess my eyes caught the 2.3.5 & Cyanogen reference and I got confused. I believe that if you flash a rom with a different kernel it will replace whatever you've got. At this point I would be very reluctant to flash anything without cwm coming with it.

Different Carrier SGH-T999 Vs. T-Mo SGH-T999 Compatability

I looked on the forums and couldnt find the answer to this question so I wanted to be extra sure
I just picked my S3 up, and looking at getting it rooted. I am on Cincinnati Bell, it is the same model number(SGH-T999 4.1.1) and baseband(T999UVDLJA) as for T-Mobile. C-Bell shares its network with T-Mobile, and many of their phones in the past have been rebranded T-Mobile's so I assume(but we all knows what can happen when you assume) this will work, but I felt better asking first. Can someone confirm as long as my SGH-T999 4.1.1 matches with the last 4 for the T-Mobile build (DLJA) I should be ok in rooting this.
My baseband version reads as T999UVDLJA
My build number looks like this though:
ULTIMOBILE-T999-4.1.1-cbw-120312-1.4
Much appreciated in advance guys !
You shouldnt have any problems. their the same phone. Also I have the tmobile version and flash att roms all the time
In theory it should work...and I emphasize should lol.I was hoping someone had run across this themselves

I saw a prior post with Woody replying giving it his thumbs up, so I will attempt to root after I get off later tonight..cross my fingers....lol anyone recommend a particular root method over others I was looking at Mr.'s rootkit
Hey man. If you recall in that thread, I suggested to Jay that he make a backup of the stock ROM that you have on it. That way if you have to take it back to CBW for some reason and they boot it up, it doesn't have the TMo kernel splash on it.
Ultimobile is the script overlay that CBW uses. They are shady man. Well at least they were when I found out some things about them a few years ago. I got a Motorola XT720 from CBW. Was a decent first Android but it was released and abandoned on Éclair (no app2sd), a locked bootloader (wtf was a bootloader) and only had 256 RAM and 512 ROM. Not a lot of space. So we had to repartition our extSD card to create a partition to where the apps could install.
CBW caught a bunch of flak from Users and they hired this Ultimobile team to "build" us a 2.2 ROM. Then CBW gave it's Users Root and an "Upgrade". I put both Build and Upgrade in quotes because once they released the build, we tore it down and found all the code that we had implemented. Even found the signatures. What was worse was that we found a script buried in the ROM that was reporting usage statistics back to the mothership in Ultimobile HQ. Dirty!!! But we couldn't call them out because they didn't release on XDA and it wasn't the first time a manufacture has take from XDA (AGPS patch taken by ASUS-allegedly).
Back to the problem at hand. Make a backup of your CBW ROM and keep it on your PC for warranty purposes. I think (this is brand spanking new) that you might be able download the latest TWPR.img (2.4.2.0) and flash it through Odin. It has a Root checker and if it fails, it asks if you want to install SuperSU. Might be the easiest way ever. You would then flash the img in Odin, install Root, backup your ROM to External SD and then reboot. Make sure it boots and after that, flash away.
As always woody, your the man, appreciate it, I'll let ya know how it goes !
I downloaded Mr's root kit because it looked super well put together and also because it has built in download for either recovery (I've always been more of a CWM fan anyhow...Sorry woody .I got the most recent stable version of cyanogen downloading now .Going to take a shower ,flash the recovery and root on do a backup and then put CM on.I'll let you know how it turns out in a bit

Flash to cricket

I'm trying to use my evo on cricket and I just want to walk in and have them flash it over, what I'm really asking is do I need it to be on stock software, and have the stock recovery? Or can I just be on aosp and it doesn't matter for them?
Thanks in advance
Been asked and answered, but you'll need a Sense ROM, stock or otherwise. I did my flashing myself but used QPST. You need a Sense ROM with EPST and Diag for fine tuning and to update prl. Cricket really doesn't care, as long as Sense, but be forewarned, if you have an evo/android, be prepped to pay the Android price.

I had it flashed correctly but now im wondering if i can flash a cricket rom for the evo now that is not sense, or if it will wipe what they did at the cricket store.....like this rom for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2124527

Make a copy of your current APN settings using APN backup and restore from the market and then make a nandroid backup of your entire current setup before you move on. Just in case. It should work, but I can't confirm APN and Data are fully functional without an app like greenk45, since when I did run that on my phone, I didn't have MMS or Data.

thanks for the info, it has been helpful...ill try soon....so am i free to flash any sense based ROM or does it have to be cricket based to work properly, i had them flash it while it was on digitalKarma, and everything works properly now
Most any ROM should work fine, but there are a few that may bring issues. Mms is a minor issue across the board. Just so long as you keep a backup of DK so you always have that to fall back on.
Hey I use cricket and have flashed several og evo's and evo 3d's. You can run any rom that is out. These so called cricket roms if you can find one with a working link are really no different than any other rom. You can have full data and mms on any rom you want to use from froyo all the way up to jellybean 4.2.2. The thing is you have to know what needs to be changed. I have never had to do anything to get data working it always works but mms is a little bit of a different story. I have never used this greenk45 or even heard of it until now. I would say that out of all the roms on this forum and a couple others I have flashed and used all but maybe five. Each version of android seems to need slightly different changes to make your mms work but I have been able to do it with all the roms. If you want you can pm me and I will be more than willing to give you any help you need. Heck maybe one of these day I will get off my lazy butt and do a complete guide to flashing roms cricket style. Until then I am always willing to help out anyone willing to ask for the help.
Yeah. Sorry, greenk45 is a proxy hack for some cricket users. It is what I had to use when I had data. But then again, I was on a $25 plan. On the note2, I had cricket flash it, so it's different now.

Samsung Galaxy S III - SCH-S960L

Wondering if the new Straight Talk model SCH-S960L was going to be supported in the Samsung Galaxy S3 ToolKit anytime soon? I just purchased. I also have a SPH-L710 on Sprint that worked great. Too afraid to use the same settings on this new SCH-S960L just yet.
Thanks!

SlimBean Rom works on SCH-S960L
Not sure if I'm on the same page, but I just flashed the SlimBean rom for the Sprint SIII to my StraightTalk SIII last night and haven't found any issues. Calls, texts, data, etc all are normal.

What did you use to root it? The Sprint ROMs should work since it is a brother of the sprint model with a few tweeks for strait talk. But with the GS2 from strait talk that was a ATT type phone you still had to use a different recovery to get it to work but you could use any of the ROMs..... so any info on how you flashed Slimbean would be great, thanks
I'm also wondering if the sprint s3 options in the galaxy toolkit are ok to use on sch-s960l...I read that the camera may not function...also I WILL donate to anyone one who can provide step by step, comprehendable instructions to root and flash slim bean with no issues.

This post should work. (QBKing77's video here) All I did was copy SuperUser zip file to the phone, ODIN'd ClockworkMod to the phone, rebooted to CWM, flashed the SuperUser, rebooted and it was rooted. Really not much to it, seemed too easy to me, but it stuck, didn't lose root after reboot.
I did notice some wonky data issues once I flashed SlimBean. My first post was edited to show that it pretty much locked onto whatever tower I was closest to at the time of the flash, so when I was driving around, once I lost connectivity to that tower, I had no data. Still could call but no data. Had to reflash SlimBean to connect to the next tower, but again, lost it since I was still driving around. Back to rooted Stock now.
Lately I've been trying to install CM 10 but they have a check to see if your phone's build.prop file has the SPH-L710 value in it (ro.phonecode or something), and obviously since we don't have sprint phones, ours says SCH-S960L. I edited the build.prop file and put the sprint code in there, but then it said the ro.bootloader value was incorrect. That line isn't even in the StraightTalk's build.prop so I added it, but it still didn't want to flash.
Next step is to edit the ROM itself and remove those checks. Kinda skeptical about that, since they're there for a reason. But, for the sake of research/advancement of mankind, I'm gonna try it anyway.
Does anyone have the stock apn settings i cant send MMS since i flash to a sprint Rom

You can edit the assert prop in the updater script of any d2spr rom. I personally use root browser from the rom toolbox from jrummy. Extract the rom, then go to META-INF>com>google>android>updater script. Open the script as an editable text document. You will see the ro.bootloader lines. Simply take out those lines, or modify them for your specific bootloader. If you downloaded the official update when you activated your phone, it will more than likely be S960LWYAMD6. Save it, then simply rezip everything, and flash. That's it. Just remember it's probably not a good idea to try this with any rom that includes bootloader or modem updates. But you SHOULD be fine with anything cyanogen-based. It's worked flawlessly for me but all phones are different, so use cation and always flash at your own risk.... Well, hope this helps some people out there. I've been having this same issue for a while and couldn't find anything that helped, until I got bored one day and just started messing around with random stuff. Haha. Happy flashing
I just need to root this damn phone...
I simply want to root my SCH-S960L. That seems to be way too much to ask on XDA...
Stock Recovery
Hey guys!
Just wondering what my options are for getting the upcoming update to Android 4.3. I have a rooted SCH-S960L on the stock rom with CWM recovery (Touch version) 6.x....I was told that I would need the stock recovery installed in order to install the upcoming 4.3 OTA, but how do I do this? Where can I get the recovery.tar for use w/ODIN to reinstall the stock recovery? If I use KIES to reinstall the factory firmware will this also reinstall the stock recovery? Could I use the Sprint L710 stock recovery.tar since this is essentially the same phone? What should I do?
Anyone with helpful info PLEASE HELP!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

I've read on that Straight Talk doesn't update their phones at all. So what is on it is what will stay on it unless there are custom roms for them. Which I am currently looking for. The topic I read it in mentioned a gingerbread phone that was never updated despite the same phone on other carriers being updated. The ST Customer Service forum had a post saying check their Terms and Conditions(which not sure what that had to do with updating their phone).
https://github.com/Shabbypenguin/an...mmit/b131f82f667433af4d8895d55f00bfc8a2a1c94f
ask your favorite rom devs to add this to their d2spr device trees. it will make it so that there wont be any more need to edit updater scripts, i already sent this info to carbon rom d2spr dev. if/when he merges you guys will be able to use carbon rom without editing anything, just flash in recovery
edit: seems CM will be the first http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/54652/ starting nov 27th you can download sprint d2spr builds and with a sprint based recovery they will flahs just fine for you guys.
Straight Talk does update their phones. The S3 was updated by Straight Talk not long after Sprint updated their S3 to 4.1.2.

how did you root the sch s960l I have this phone and I want to root it bad. I emailed customer service at straight talk and they told me they would not be updating the phone to 4.3
They also said that the phone woukd be stuck on ICS also...
As for rooting use SKUNKAPE1's guide on here for rooting the Sprint S3. The only addition to his step-by-step is to install STERRICSON's version of BusyBox once you finish up with the TeamEpic root.
Will tell you though that most of the Sprint S3 roms will not be fully functional on this phone however...everything usually works except the cammera/gallery app. Xposed framework mods do work very well however.

[Q] Sprint SGS3 flashed to PagePlus = Sprint or Verizon roms?

I have recently acquired a Sprint SGS3 SPH-L710. It was still original stock at 4.4.2, never rooted. i flashed the n2j stock rom through odin, and then I had it flashed from Sprint to PagePlus and it is working okay (still need to get 3g going) Then used cm-autoroot and installed twrp (debating on installing philz). Now the phone is ready for some rom action.
My question is since this phone is a d2spr, but flashed to PagePlus (Verizon), would it be safe or better to install a d2vzn rom vs d2spr rom?
From my research, there are settings in the roms that are molded to a specific carrier. If I am on Verizon, I do not want to install and have Sprint related settings (buildprop?) and apps, etc. Then flashing a Sprint SGS3 to Pageplus vs a Verizon SGS3, Sprint must be set to NV only, and other posts and forums (on xda and howards), I have read said this nv setting could be changed when flashing a rom, which would break the PagePlus flash. But if I install a d2vzw rom, everything else would be molded to Verizon, which is great since I am using a Verizon network. I suppose it depends on how much molding is being done and what exactly. Then of course, I do not want to brick the device flashing the wrong version. If the roms were only listed as d2lte, I wouldnt mind as much, but I have noticed some roms do have a Sprint version and a Verizon version, but I can not locate the details to compare the differences.

Flashing a d2vzw build will not trick the phone to think it is a vzw phone just more chances of you ending up with a brick.

I am now having a problem updating the APN in any 5.x rom, says not enough permissions. I tried a handful of APN apps on Google play, made them system apps, etc. it never saves or changes the apn settings. I can change and save APN in KK roms just fine though.
Did you try on WiFi it could be cause not picking up data connection

I hear you and agree 100% with flashing to alternate carriers. I would not normally do this myself, but considering I got this cell for free a couple weeks ago, I figured I might as well deal with the hassle and make the best of it.
The only problem is that I still haven't found a 100% fix. I been flashing 4.4.x roms and 5.1.1 roms trying various APN settings, apps, changes, tips, etc. Nothing seems to stick or crash when attempting to change it. Trust me I been digging all over Google, XDA, and other various droid forums.
My carrier is PagePlus/vzw, and I can not find a PagePlus APN flashable file, hmm maybe I can come across a generic Vzw one, otherwise I know the settings to put in to create a new one though. This is why I was inquirying on flashing a Verizon S3 rom in the first place. Hopefully I can come across something soon.
When I get off work I'll try to help you out
