I'm on a VERIZON, RETAIL Galaxy Note 4. As users alike know, as of the time of this posting, it is unrootable.
I've installed several different apps, hoping to be able to change the max mA capacity from the stock 3220, to the mA capacity of my ZeroLemon battery, which is 10,000 mA. Virtually every app I've tried, requires root to do such. There were even some users on the ZeroLemon (go through the last few pages of the thread) thread having some success at having the Note 4 correctly reading the battery, but these were either Developer Edition users, or users of another carrier (the Note 4 can be rooted if you have a DE or are not on Verizon or AT&T), as they were modifying ROOT files.
That said, no matter what I do, my ZeroLemon battery STILL reads at a capacity of 10,000 mA, and STILL drains at the same rate of the stock battery (or at least, "appears to"), HOWEVER will still hang on at 1% for at least half of a day.
Question: Without root access, is an extended battery, in general, completely useless, WITH the exception of the last 1% lasting 12 hours or so and the screen being very dim during that timeframe (dimming starts at 5%)?
That hanging at 1% thing says the battery needs to be re-calibrated. You'd have to google that.

Ok so let me ask you something. Do YOU have an extended battery? If so, which brand and what capacity? Secondly, Are you on the Verizon Retail Galaxy Note 4, which is CURRENTLY unrootable?

I'm sorry but I have to say no to both qustions. I'm using @hsbadr's custom kernel on my Dev Ed phone. The battery life on my stock battery is great. He told me there are battery tweaks in that kernel and they obviously work.
The good thing is according to the Developer Only thread root looks pretty promising. Also Multi System has been released for the Note 3. It should come to the Note 4 next. Hsbadr has a N4 Dev Ed now and promises good things to come once he has the Note 3 owners squared away.
There is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks for your input. The thing is, though, I'd clearly stated that I was on the Retail Verizon version of the Galaxy Note 4. I already know that having root access allows you to further condition your battery with apps that do require root access to function correctly. Unfortunately, I do not have that sort of privilege. There are others that are having luck w/ the same battery I'm using, BUT again, those are users of another carrier, or DE users. That is, their bootloaders are not locked/encrypted like mine is, and are already rootable. What you'd stated, I already knew regarding the DE, and you also said that you're using the stock battery. My stock battery works just fine, I just wanted a bigger battery, but unfortunately, my phone doesn't calibrate batteries of different mA than the stock, thanks to lack of root.
Once root is found for the Verizon Retail Ed. Note 4, I'm wondering if MultiSystem will work. I know nothing about it, what it is, nor what the prerequisites are for it.

Sorry. I didn't know the phone can't calibrate a large capacity battery. If you mentioned it in your OP I missed it.
Multi System is the hot new thing over in the Note 3 forum. I follow things over there because hsbadr is just getting them fixed up before he can deal with the Note 4.

Thanks, again. Again, unless you have root access, no app can correctly calibrate a battery with a different capacity than the stock battery. Had I known any of this, I would've held out for the DE. That is to say, at least with the battery I'm using, it doesn't seem to calibrate, correctly. I almost bought a Hyperion just to test it out and see if there was a difference, granted its capacity is only 80% of the ZeroLemon (8000 mA vs 10,000 mA). I think the battery technologies are different, how, I don't know, exactly. Maybe that plays a factor, and overall quality control of the two different batteries.

Loving my GN, and the battery life has been amazing. I am on stock Rooted 4.0.2, and I get 2+ hours of screen time on 4G LTE, and about 16-20 hours of up time.
But alas, I've been reading about the success people have had with the developer ROMs and kernels, and I'm wondering if its worth pushing my luck? Will I get any additional juice from a particular ROM/Kernel combination? Please make your recommendations.

Update bootloader? Can you give a link describing this process?
And I am running Bigxie rom with franco's kernel and I had good battery life... Had 4 hours of screen time today.
I get more than 4 hours display with stock kernel and overclocked GPU. 17 hours on battery. Played some supper Nintendo, Nintendo, listened to music almost 2 hours and the rest wifi browsing. Ended with 17/4 20% left. Got over 5 hours last weekend. My goal is 6 hours display but that is going to be tough using the phone.

Good job. Idk how long mine will last now. I did have it the Android OS bug though with these results from bigxie 7.0 kernel and I backed it up and flashed a new one.. but this isn't really a bragging right thing, the point is we both can get through the whole day easily no matter what we do.

Yes. GSM. Verizon's shady tactics and juice sucking lte are no no's for me. Not many people are getting great display times unless LTE is turned off.

Initially I had to charge my GN at least twice a day but I downloaded Set CPU, Ultimate Battery Juice and the Extended Controls beta battery helper and I am now very impressed indeed. Trying out the Android Revolution HD ROM too, time shall tell
Uuuummmm, ok, I'll bite. How the heck is a bootloader going to increase battery life? That makes no sense.
To the OP, I was on stock 4.0.2 and flashed Android Revolution HD. The battery life is a little better, and can probably be accounted for by the placebo effect, but it's a smoother/quicker experience than the stock 4.0.2 ROM. It also looks completely stock, so if that's not what you're after, that might be a turn off.
Every 4.0.3 ROM I've tried has horrendous battery life and insane CPU Awake times (stuff like CPU Total: 37 minutes; CPU Awake: 5 hours ), something that I have not experienced on 4.0.1 or 4.0.2.
I typically get battery life like you. In great reception areas I usually get 14-20 hours of battery life depending on whether or not I'm using the stock or the extended battery. I'm also not glued to my device 24/7 since I have to do stuff like work (apparently most of XDA watches movies and plays games all day and gets angry over 6 hour battery cycles). Coming from a Galaxy S and not being a native whiner, I know what these screens can do to battery life, and the GN is extremely impressive on battery life. People whine and complain, but this is a phone with .65" of more screen and over twice the hardware of the Galaxy S, along with only about 30% more battery and I was lucky to get my stock Vibrant to make it 10 hours.
Without disconnecting from the data network or using Juice Defender (which to me defeats the purpose of having a smart phone), I really think that what we're getting is probably the best battery life possible right now.

You have any other ideas? No you don't. Would updating the bootloader cause anything harmful? not really. I'm not sure if this is the case but it's a step towards resolving the problem by telling users to update their bootloaders if the newer version isn't going to change anything (and it doesn't really change anything except things behind the scene which you won't even know what Google did).
This is the latest bootloader coming from Google that comes with 4.0.3. There is a reason why the bootloader was updated.
But it is has make the reaction on bad receiption way more quicker, so it looks like the bootloader is causing less lagg between the kernel/rom and the radio(don't know if this is even possible, but I've now less downtime with automatic mode and same place!)

That really didn't tell anything. Not jumping you, Mr. Negri, lol, but we need a better explanation than that. I am going to assume kwkslvr wants the same. I am also guessing he's experimented and decided 4.0.2 was along the lines of "if it ain't broke don't fix it." which is where I'm at. 4.0.2 has some hiccups but it's very stable and great on battery. I am sure some more "stable" battery improvements will be made in the future, but I'm going to have give samsung some props for the hardware engineering. They even outdid the gs2 in power efficiency out of the box.

Well for all I can say in my own personal experience including others. The updated bootloader has helped. You can believe me if you want, or disbelieve me. I really don't care, I'm just simply handing out suggestions, if you don't like it then just ignore me and stop trying to harass me about "negri" and "bootloaders."
It's not like updating the bootloader will do any harm, there's a reason why that updated bootloader came with the 4.0.3 update and for the fact that Google recommended using that bootloader (regardless if you're on 4.0.2 or 4.0.1). Regardless if it is for battery fixes or something else, it is most likely to make the overall performance of the Galaxy Nexus better.
And for that term "if it aint broke, dont fix it." That's like saying, mobile phones weren't really broken when they were just used for making phone calls. Now they're used as devices to browse the web, check emails, and do all sorts of other things.
The bootloader was updated to fix fastboot lockups under certain circumstances. As a developer, I was frustrated when rebooting to the bootloader would lock up at times when in GNU/Linux. The new bootloader fixed it so that I could use fastboot without it ever hardlocking. Before that, I had to unplug the device, put it in fastboot mode from the device, and then plug the usb cable back in to make sure I didn't lock up.
Once the bootloader hands off and the phone starts booting, it has NO effect on battery whatsoever. It isn't running, either.

Flashing anything in Android can go wrong. That's no one's fault but the flasher, and with the package I linked... all you do is double click a .bat file in Windows while your phone is in bootloader mode. If that step is too difficult then, I don't really know what to say because it can't get any easier than that.
And that could be the same bootloader that comes with 4.0.3 when it is fully released.
It is the newest and latest bootloader coming from Google/Samsung due to the lettering, KL01.
Flashing a rom that goes wrong can hurt you, yes.
Flashing a bootloader that goes wrong, CAN BRICK YOU.
Nothing is foolproof. So I wouldn't be one to casually flash radios or bootloaders. I've been playing this game for many devices, and have seen many bricks. Trust me, its possible.

And you're talking to me like if I'm new to Android myself? I've been using Android since it's first came out since the G1 days when you had to root through terminal emulator and spend 20+ minutes to root.
Stop trying to scare people flashing things through fastboot and/or Odin. No one can make their own radios or bootloaders, they have to come through Google (or a manufacturer based on which device) directly.
People including myself experiment with various radios and alternate them to go through a series of tests to validate which one is better for their network and location overally improving their signals, battery life (poorer signal = less battery life because your phone has to deal more power to getting service), and so forth. This is why MD5 hashes are included and users have to verify its MD5 hash because if the MD5 is wrong, it will cause problems. I agree with you on this but everything that a person does to their phone is the person's responsibility. No body else.
You're also speaking on the behalf that I'm forcing people to update their bootloaders. When people are updating their phones via OTA. Behind the scenes, this is also updating their bootloader, kernel, radio all for them. Fastbooting it is simply doing it manually rather than a flashable zip.
Are you trying to imply that updating your phone via OTA will also cause bricks because it will update their bootloaders/radios?
Also, this is starting to get irrelevant to the OP's post about kernels and ROMs. So if you wish to continue this conversation, feel free to inbox me. Until then, I will stop right here because this argument is taking over the OP's request on user feedback on best rom/kernel combo for battery life.
Hey all.
I've been an AT&T Hox owner since day one and I've really enjoyed this device. Battery life is insanely good, consistently getting over 24 hours usage and 5 hours on screen time. I am uprooted and on the stock rom.
I've been thinking about getting the int Hox because it seems to be getting a lot of updates and has a lot of developer support. HTC and AT&T aren't saying anything about the customs issue which is undoubtedly affecting sales. Rumors even have it that AT&T may stop selling the phone altogether. If that's true then I pretty much have a dead phone, especially since this variant is NOT the One XL int model.
I am not willing to give up the amazing battery life at the cost of benchmark scores. My phone is a tool and I need it to last a long time. What are typical battery stats of the int Hox out of the box? I also don't want to root and flash all kinds of roms until I get good battery life. Thanks for the help.

The international One X would not have LTE if used on AT&T, right?
And it would have significantly worse battery life b/c it uses Tegra 3?
Would the custom ROMs available on the international One X make the battery life equivalent to the at&t model which uses the S4?

No on the LTE, but I have no idea when LTE is coming here anyway
Battery life is important, but I am not away from chargers long enough to worry about it.
I like the 32 GB of storage vs 16 and the unlocked bootloader and the development that is in place here.
I'm the other way around, I had the Tegra3 HOX 2 weeks ago because I didn't want to wait anymore, but I was waiting for the S4 version to come

I have what you're going to get. battery life is awesome, and everything is good. I just dont like the 2GB data cap on redpocket, but will be switching to straight talk unlimited everything for $45. dont go with redpocket, go with straight talk
I've had my HOX international for a couple weeks but didn't stay stock long enough to tell you how your battery life would be. On ARHD 6.0.0 with faux123 002b3 kernel, I am typically seeing 15-18 hours with around 2.5hrs screen time, 2-3hrs playing MP3, 15 min fetch email on 3 accounts, 100 text, 20 min talk, and a little browsing. Meets my needs just fine and the 26gb available vs 9gb on the HOXL really makes the HOX the more prudent device to own. It's just going to get better as software updates and development continues.
The only negatives for the International version are the battery life and no LTE. For me, I don't care about the LTE, and hopefully the rom dev's can do some improvements to the battery life (especially when using the camera).
The advantages of the International version are the 32gb, the speed and it's not limited by US carriers.
However, honestly I don't think either is that much better to switch from one to the other. There are positives and negatives of both and the negatives can circumvented other ways (power packs, cloud storage, portable wifi storage (whatever that thing is called), etc.).
I do have a great idea for the power problem... make a holster that has a usb input outside with the pushpin connectors (whatever they're called) inside. You plug a power pack into the holster and put it in your pocket... then every time you holster it, it'll charge the phone. Another option would be a slightly bigger holster that has its own power pack. You'd have to do some slightly tricky curve around the bottom for the pushpins because you wouldn't want the phone screen facing out, but it looks doable.
Wow im in the same boat as you guys pretty much lol, i just ordered the international version because i was tired of the almost no dev support on the phone (one xl), plus the 16gb storage with only like 8gb usable was getting to me ...
im a bit nervous for battery life thats it, because the one xl did have amazing battery life. best ive ever seen on a phone and the reports on this tegra 3 seem conflicting.
oh well, hoping for the best!
You can always carry a 10000mah external power pack for $50.
You can't add 16gb or turn a dual-core into a quad-core.
I had the AT&T HOX and was pretty unhappy with it. The SMS bug was annoying and there were a few other things.
Since picking up the International version, I have been much happier. I don't know what it is, but it just seems better. As to battery life: I have been pleasantly surprised. My experience is that the Int version does better when idling. So, all that time it's in your pocket, it's using no juice. That's kind of nice. It means when you pull it out of your pocket, there are no surprises. It pretty much has as much juice as it had when you put it away.
With a few hours of screen time, I'm still getting around 14 hours off the charger.
My battery life is awesome. I get a full day with good usage on my part.

It depends on what you're running. I ran it a day with really no apps on stock and the battery seemed great. After moving to a custom rom and installing all the apps, not so much. I run a number of apps that do polling or transferring of data, which I assume is why there are always a big discrepancy in battery reports. For instance, i run touchdown which is constantly polling my work email (and I get a lot of work email), dropbox which syncs my pictures, an IM client or two (depending on what i'm doing at the time work/etc), etc. Of course, I could not run those apps and get better battery life, but then, I could also go back to using a blackberry if I want to do nothing with my phone. From what I see on the forums, this phone does seem to do better with media and 'on demand' functionality, I think its just people who run a lot of background processes that experience the battery issue. Don't get me wrong, it's not an issue with this phone in particular, but rather battery technology. I've just changed my habits from carrying a couple extra batteries to a portable battery charger. Though, the batteries were a little easier to deal with, but whatever.

Hello Everyone,
Many times while searching the internet for Nexus information, the search keeps having me come to this forum so I decided to become a member. Just got for my G-Nexus the other day, its replacing a Droid 3. Nothing really wrong with the Droid (well), but it was my first physical keyboard phone and I wasn't feeling it, and I heard so many good things about the Nexus I knew I had to have one.
I've had it less then a week now, and so far I love it. Though the one thing I must say I am not crazy about, which seems to be a common complaint, is the battery. It drains WAY too fast. Today though seemed more then ridiculous. I left my house @ 8:45 am @ 100% (right off the charger). Made some use of it on the bus, but nothing much (no calls, no video, no music). Already by 11:30am, I was @ 39%! I mean come on, I didn't even use it that much. Yes, I did notice I left the WiFi on, but it should not have drained that fast. Tuesday I used the device moderately and I was able to go home after having the device on for 9 hours and still have around 40% to spare. Its a shame they cannot make a battery that can accommodate such a great phone.
So some questions: Is it really necessary for me to root this thing to get its full potential? I never rooted a phone before. When I bought the phone, I got a shiny gel case that Verizon sells for like $20 - if I did get the extended battery and door, would this case still fit? I am thinking no. Is the ext. battery even worth getting?
I have more questions, but I will peruse the forums and see what everyone else is saying. So in all I just wanted to intro myself and say I am happy to be part of the forum!
Your battery should definitely not be draining this fast. Install better battery stats(look around XDA) and look at what partial wakelocks you have. Try to remember any recent apps that might have been causing the drain
The 2100mah battery will fit. If you're looking at the 3900mah extended batteries, those have their own custom backplates and won't fit.
I've read that the 2100mah battery adds about an hour of juice.

Sorry to sound dumb, but what do you by "battery stats"..?
And I am not sure what a wakelock is either - if you could explain
Hey,
I got my Galaxy Nexus this week too. This is my third full day of using and I get good 10+ hrs of usage each day. I use it a lot too. At least 2-3 hrs of talking, about 50+ texts, synching 4 emails, and browsing/streaming an hour or two each day.
You should check what drains your battery the most and go from there.

'better battery stats' is an app. go look for it. there's an XDA version
your phone goes into 'deep sleep' to conserve power. wake locks are when something refuses to let it get to that state and locks it awake. This is major cause of battery drain.
Better battery stats is available on the Play Store (ugh hate that name) but the dev is nice enough to give it to xda members for free:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Aside from looking at wakelocks, go to Settings>Battery, then look at the list of stuff (in descending order) that's eating your battery. I went to watch a movie once at 90%, when it was done the battery was at 18% and I never even touched my phone. I checked that list and apparently Facebook killed the battery. Try and look for apps that might be using up a lot and either uninstall them, replace them, or trun off features that might be causing the drain

Root it?
It's a Nexus man. They're fantastic for root users.
All the roms are AOSP...
And bug free (or...mostly. AS bug free as any google build, generally).

I agree with you that the Nexus is fantastic for root, but it's not necessary for all users. I rooted mine because I was use to with my old HTC HD2, but ,except for changing rom, it's useless when you just get your phone.
I think that you can keep the stock rom, and don't root it. One day you will maybe need it, but the stock rom is very nice, it's enough to start (that's what I did with mine).
I noticed you are on Verizon, bad cell reception can chew your battery for lunch too.
There's something floating around in the development section (sprint I think) called battery mod.
Of course, youd need to root and unlock your device to get it working (takes all of about 5 minutes).
I also had this battery draining problem, but installing a custom from with a power saver governor and the battery mod, it'll drain 1% every 30min-1hour. Its essentially in "deep sleep", as the CPU winds down to 0mhz, instead of the standard 350. With this comes a lower CPU voltage, so less energy is wasted.
All in all, this is a great phone once you tame it.
Look for Black Ice ROM. Its probably one of the best here because it let's you choose a stock look or a custom look

Believe me I'm the last person who will complain about battery backup or create a topic about it, but yet I'm doing it! Seriously, Samsung helped us to be greedy, with awesome battery backup on 4.1.1 ROM, and now they took it away! It really doesn't matter whether you agree or not, 4.1.2 does drain battery much much faster than 4.1.1 ROM. I mean why? Why on earth you gave us that great backup at first and then took it back?
I really don't wanna go back to to a previous version, but I think I'll ultimately have to do that. Honestly I don't see any improvements in 4.1.2, other than that volume key photo taking option in 4.1.2, and of course that SDS fix.
Anyone from Samsung seeing this? What would you say? Why this sudden change of mind? Have any answers to that?
This is what I/we used to get in 4.1.1,

Dude, you're complaining with 1d 19h runtime and 6h screen on? I could never, ever get that out of my N2, no matter what version, kernel, tweak or what not... There seems to be a huge manufacturing tolerance in quality of battery or whatever else. So I just simply stopped worrying about it, charging the thing overnight and just got 2 spare batteries & additional charger for € 20. My peace of mind is worth that
Why don't you want to go back to 4.1.1 if the update has hardly brought any improvement?

Not being funny but knowing that you're getting much less battery after the update does play on the mind and it is clearly a software issue which we shouldn't have to endure.
Unlike many on here, the one and only reason I got the note over the s3 was battery life. I would rather much save a couple hundred and have a more comfortable phone to hold in the s3 if I knew the battery life would get messed uo after a software update.
I also don't want to carry seperate batteries around and swap out. If I did, I would have stuck with HTC to be honest.
I just want the immense battery life of 4.1.1 back but without sacrificing new features like the browser text reflow.

Well when I compare battery life I do it with my own results. It's completely invalid to compare one's backup with others as usage pattern is different most times.
So, on 4.1.1 I got 9 hours screen on time, half dozen times, on 4.1.2 it touched 8 hours once! This is just bad.

Totally and completely agree with you, and that was my point.
Either this is a game by Samsung, to level down us to S3 users, or they are simply unable or ignorant to maintain the continuity of a good thing.
The thing is, technically Note 2's battery backup was right, because on S2 we used to have 4 to 4½ hours screen on time, and that was a 1650 mAh battery, so it's almost doubled on Note 2, so it's basically normal to have 8 hours screen on, nothing ultra ordinary I'd say, but I can say what we are getting now is just BAD.
'Swyped' from my GT-N7100
I have to agree completely with OP. I have been only using the stock samsung roms & i too find the battery life to be worse on 4.1.2 XXDMB2 (by approx. 10-15 %) compared to 4.1.1 roms. Although, i like everything else about the latest 4.1.2 better .
I'd like to vent:
Battery life went to absolute s#!+.
The phones keyboard lags horribly
And I really hate the fake 4g it's doing.
I'm in a 3g only area, it shows 4g, down [email protected] .12 mb, and that's lucky.
I want my old 4.2 back. I HONESTLY like "some"of the updates.
But really, it's agitating me to where I'm upset.
I used to get through my day, get home and have 50-70% Leff, I'm lucky to have above 30%. I've tried airplane mode at work, I've tired turning everything off, I've done what I did on phones that wouldn't last 6 hours. I even forked out for a new battery cause Sprint said so.
My battery is better than the new one.
I'm stock, no root, nothing special. Haven't changed anything but I git the update.
I've read where people saw improved battery life, and faster speed...but I've experienced the exact opposite.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Please help, I could care less about bells and whistles,I want my juice back.
Nothing is showing up as the reason for the draw!
I'm not new, I've owned three if these phone due to stupid failures. I've averaged a new phone once every six months....and not through tep, but phone failure.

I would recommend backing up all your SD Card contents that you want saved, especially the DCIM folder (pictures). Then get an app called Helium by ClockworkMod, and run the PC software with your phone hooked up, to enable a backup of all your user apps-messages-call logs-launcher layout. Then copy the Helium/Carbon backup folder to your PC. Then do a Factory Data Reset. I've heard of and known people that took an OTA update that were furious that their phone performance went backwards, but after a Reset all was fine.
Just my 2¢, but I think it will fix the problems.
Sent from my SPH-L900
Yeah definitely try a factory reset I unrooted and took the update and it's actually quite nice smooth but not as fast as a custom kernel but battery life vastly improved. Lol if I turned on airplane mode it would probably last a week or more

I get my hands on quite a few phones where I work at (a cell phone shop) and I don't mean to sound like an ass but maybe you've junked up your phone? I've had people come in crying about how slow their phone is when they have a million apps, enough porn to take up all the internal memory and 10 things running in the background hogging up RAM. If you do a reset/data wipe and it runs to your satisfaction, scale down on the play store app frenzy. Just because you have access to a lot of things doesn't mean you should get everything you can. Just my .02!
Also charging has always been slow on every Note 2 I've had my hands on. Probably has something to do with the gigantic battery. Note 3? Same way IMO (again chalked up to the bigger battery. Think about it, more cells, same charger, more time required to recharge those cells)

Yea I have to agree with some of the others on here, I think it may be some apps or settings you have on your phone causing problems. I did the full install from lorjay that is deodexed rooted and I have to say that compared to 4.1 this is a HUGE step in performance for me, most notably in the modem. I was at my sisters for thanksgiving the other day and had 4g everywhere in her house where normally I am constantly switching between 3g/4g, and even better yet it was usable 4g! Phone itself is CRAZY smooth, love the fact that the bars now show data signal when on 4g, and I love all the other little UI changes that were made as well. The only 2 things I have noticed negative since 4.1 is that the battery life MAY be just a tad bit less than before. Granted it has only been a few days I have been using this, but i have noticed a little bit of a drop, nothing to write home (or to samsung) about. The BIG issue that I have noticed that is driving me crazy is that the home/lock buttons seem to not respond very well (if at all) sometimes. I am sure I will figure this issue out soon enough however.
Do a nandroid, then factory reset, and before installing any apps at all, try the phone out for a bit and see if your problems are all still there.
Good luck!

My battery died over night...which is fine it was 12 % when I got home.....here's the thing I plugged it in and left it to charge for about 20 min this morning then turned it on and checked galaxy current and it reported 466....unplugged and replugged a few times ...still 466.....now 7 hours later the phone is only at 89%....checked battery status still showed as usb charging @466...unplugged ..replugged now it's at 1698
this was all with the 2amp factory wall charger. My guess is that mandatory SLOW charge gets initiated when battery is below a certain level and for whatever reason doesn't automatically switch back to AC mode ever unless you unplug and replug.
I have to pay more attention to when AC or USB charging is taking place, see if it is actually based on the current battery charge at the time it's plugged in.

Slow charging has nothing to do with the battery size.
The stock firmwares from Samsung intentionally brick the 2Ampere stock charger via software limiter into charging only around 500mA. Note3 users have been happy about charge speeds at stock because Samsung has chosen to cease gimping their chargers with a software charging limiter in the newer devices.
When I was using an AOSP rom, the first time I plugged the charger it did not charge at all but when I unplugged and replugged it charged normally. This happed happened on my Galaxy player too with PAC rom. After a few days it charged normally. So maybe the battery is recalibrating? for the new ROM installation.
Edit: Everything is indeed smoother and quicker but there are times when things get loaded so fast that lags slightly after. It could be the Knox files or whatever. AnTuTu went up by 2000 points. (Stock rom, 19000 to 21000)

Guess if it ain't broke, don't fix. Still on 4.1.2 and everything works just fine, battery life, tether, etc. Obviously would like to be on the most current version but all this Knox stuff and etc just make it unattractive in my opinion and i really don't see what 4.3 brings that's radical.
Look through your battery usage and see what's killing battery or download BetterBatteryStats to see exactly what is causing the drain. I had serious drain when I took the 4.3 update but I figured out my cause. Since I had factory reset to take the update when setting up the phone all over again I chose that stupid allow apps to get location while Wi-Fi off. Thing is battery hungry

don't be fooled....there already are 2 full 4.3 roms with NO KNOX in them that are flashable like any other rom except the need to odin the wifi fix....4.3 is running just fine on my phone, overall improvement
I hear it's Google Play Services that are to blame for battery life. That's what most of the reviews of it are saying after users grabbed an Android version update. Direct link to our issue with Note 2 maybe?
Formating the SD card also helps because the new Android version will no longer be picking through old files from an older Android installation or files that weren't correctly overwritten with the same filenames or paths. Also gets rid of old app data so 4.3 apps aren't trying to do the same thing with 4.1 data. .. All this assuming your SD card hadn't been manually partitioned by the Android version you're going to (e.g. 4.4 and sdcard/0).

I'd think a bigger battery (Note 2 or 3) would take longer to charge than a smaller battery (say from a S2) given the same exact charger being used to charge both devices? Meh.

Apples to apples, yes. As I said, it is not apples to apples.
For the exact reason I posted. Sammy software throttles the "2A" chargers back to 0.5A in the kernel on older handsets. Only with Note3 did they release the throttle clamp and allow full speed chargin of the charger at stock.

Yes it's a very simple kernel adjustment. Jellybombed had it built in. I think you can download an app for rooted handsets. I think it's called STweak? (Please correct if wrong). I'm sure there are others too.
But it's VERY IMPORTANT you know what you're doing or you can very easily fry a chip or more with the wrong voltage settings.

I'm with you. When I used my Galaxy Nexus, I always had to have the latest and greatest rom (it had 4.3 months ago and was buggy on even that phone) but I am more than satisfied with digiblur's de-bloated 4.1.2
It seems that Samsung really screwed this update and introduced more problems than new features. I'm sticking with my rooted 4.1.2 rom until this Samsung disaster is cleaned up by the great xda dev community.

I am rooted but still running stock 4.3 rom and stock kernel. Everything is good here. Battery is about the same if not just a little better. I would do a reset. I usually just back up my pics and reset. I don't fool with backing up apps and data stuff. Figure I am better starting from scratch then downloading things one at a time to see if it happens again. Then I know what caused it.

I know this is supposed to be complaint thread, but I thought I'd chime in with my experience. I was running rooted MC2 based DigiBlur (which is a heavily de-bloated, moderately tweaked, but otherwise stock-ish ROM). I'm now running Lorjay589's KNOX-free MK4 which is a rather stock-ish ROM (other than root and no KNOX), and it's actually performing better than any MC2 ROM I've tried, including stock rooted MC2. I think the key was in order to flash MK4 I had to wipe everything, basically starting over. I restored only 3rd-party apps/data (no system data) with TB, and I have absolutely no complaints.
So, although encountering post MK4 OTA problems could be for a variety of reasons, the easiest solution to try is a factory reset. Basically, it can't hurt and it may solve the issues.
