Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a phone for android development, portable media centre and tinkering with ROMs.
I've been pointed in the direction of the HTC Desire due to its wide range of functionality and large development community (you lot ).
I've almost settled on it and about to purchase, but I have a few questions regarding some quirks of the device, mainly regarding battery life.
I've read custom ROMs such as Cyanongen Mod and OxygeN improve the battery life to make the Desire actually usable.
As I'm wanting to use it as a portable media centre I was looking for your experiences of battery life in general, running hardware supported video playback (.mp4) and software video playback (.avi).
How is the PC side of software for connection to the Desire; are the ROMs supported by the HTC software or is something such as ODIN required?
The phone itself is old and looking at the various ROMs it doesn't show any sign of becoming unsupported in sight or lack of porting newer android versions, so it will last a long development cycle. Which doesn't warrant going for newer hardware (HTC Desire S/HD/etc) that has not got a wide range of development at the moment.
If all the figures are suitable for myself I'll end up purchasing a HTC Desire within a few days.
Looking forward to joining the HTC Desire XDA community.
Any input will be appreciated guys.
The only thing I can tell you about is battery life. After a week of usage, your battery will reach full potential. I remember that the first two days the charge didn't last more than six hours of moderately-intense use
Now, anyways, the battery lasts comfortably ten-twelve hours in moderate use (3g always on, some minutes of videos, web surfing, texting and chatting - no calls )
The award for best battery drainer goes, of course, to the navigator, that drained more than 50% of battery life in 40 minutes of driving.
Desire is definitely a great choice if you're looking into getting started with Android development Only "difficult" thing to do is getting it to work with ADB, but you can simply enable that by adding a few lines to an .inf file (I would post a link but this board prevents me from doing that because I'm "new" - you can google it with the following keywords though: "connecting htc desire adb"). Once that works, you're all good to go!
As for battery life, well.. like said before, these types of batteries won't last for years, but you could always replace it with a new one. The battery from my Desire has been in there for about a year and it's showing its age already (max. 8 hours a day?), but I guess it depends on how you're using the device.
I'm not sure if I'd buy the original Desire again because of the internal memory constraints, but aside from that I'd say go for it. There's always the custom ROMs to get over those limits
Thanks for the replies.
Could anyone post some more detailed figures for the battery life including video type playback (hardware/software) and the ROM installed?
Just to give me a clearer picture of what im in for.
Looking to get a desire this week, now to decide on mocha or white handset.
Dear all I just got HTC one x a couple of days ago from Singapore and is the international version and have since installed android revolution hd 3.1 with Rom cleaner and the 2 tweaks for the arhd. Now I was initially quite stumped with the interfaceag but it. Has gotten much better since rom cleaner but now I noticed my startup time with fastboot is about 25 sec and the videos I have seen the one x is meant to boot much faster. What could.be causing this? My next observation is that at every start up when I unlock my front page is has to take some time to load with the loading screen animation. Is this normal? Then I went to check usage and my phone began to lag really bad and I was unable to scroll or access other tabs. Is this a performance issue? I also noticed that when playing tiny village my smaller village lagged a lot more than ny friends larger village on her sensation xl. Even collecting coins and accessing in game menus lagged considerably. Are these causes for concern? Is my unit faulty? Or am I nitpicking here? I plead for your.input. thank your
Hey,
I'm thinking of buying this phone, and was wondering if there was anything else about it that I needed to know from a user point of view (apart from WiFi hardware issues)?
Many Thanks,
Kanay
The phone is very nice, both in looks in and in speed and performance.
But, if you are a type of person that uses the phone a lot, then you should know that the battery life isn't the best. It's not bad, but you will have to charge it twice a day if you play a lot of games.
Otherwise it's a brilliant phone with very nice support from talented developers and chefs..
Search! We have plenty of threads like this.

HTC ONE X , very Good Camera and Beat Sound , But battery drain fast and Overheat around camera area, also after play game for 5 to 10 minute become hot ,if u want to install custom font the only thing is u have to root or unlock bootloader, if u can accept is ok , service center is very bad in SG, i already done one to one for 4 time , that is really bad , but after last one to one is stable , compare with S3 camera and sound is better than S3, but any way i like HTC one X ,
buy it1, is awesome!!!
You should probably buy the AT&T one, since the S4 is faster than the Tegra 3
You need to know that hox is best cell phone in earth. You will love it.

With stock unrooted, I get 4h screen and 18h standby. With custom I get 5h. Remember its a massive screen and I have the brightness pretty high.
I think its the best phone right now. If you absolutely need swappable battery and microsd get Samsung s3. But its ugly, the screen sucks and it doesn't sound som good.
I tried both and went for the HOX.
how to assure that i wont have the screen flickering issue and the wifi hardware problem before buying it? i looked into the local shops and all of the have SH/HT 25 models. in the store how can i check the screen flickering or whether the set has wifi hardware issue. please help. in deep dilemma.
When I got my phone new, the battery was flat.
After 3.5 months, the soft buttons died,
When I picked it up after repair, battery was flat.
You might find it hard.
There is a thread with instructions for checking in store, in General section, I think.
Best phone I've had this year. It's difficult to judge the wifi problem in store or on early days as it could occur at anytime. The flickering screen issues have been fixed with the 1.2.9 kernel and I've not experienced any flickering since.
Most of the newer batches should be fine but the odd one can have QC issues.
Your in the UK as well we have rules which allow us to return an item back within 7 days and you get a full refund. So if you get a dud device your eligible for a refund or replacement depending where you are thinking of buying it from. Amazon give you 30 days which is excellent.

The phone is amazing. It is fast and beautiful and it has a lot of people making custom roms and features for it. The only thing you should be careful with is the screen, it get's scratched somewhat easy. You should buy a screen protector and apply it on the phone as soon as you buy it.

Custom kernels can tweak the vibration value.
However, most users have found that the head on the vibrating motor...when spun too quickly...seems less intense.
And when spun too slow...again, seems less intense.
The stock value seems to be calibrated to about the best value.
You can play around with it if you please...but don't expect miraculous results.
All,
I'm thinking of picking up the G3, but with all this talk of the battery life, how is it compared to my current daily driver the Htc One M7? I'm hoping its better and not equal to the M7 right?
Any info is appreciated!

Stay with the HTC or get m8. I'm going to sell my g3. Nice phone but rubbish performance and too many issues like it not working with some aux cables
I upgraded from a m7 and I'm loving my g3 so far. If I decide to swap it for an m8 it's only for the dev support.
I'm 3 days into my g3 and battery life has been way better than my m7. I did root and remove bloat. Got 5 hrs of screen time with 30% left yesterday, never got close to that on my m7.
Any more questions about comparisons to the m7 feel free to ask

Wow, uh like 99 out of 1oo reviews say the g3 performs great. Your unique
I got my G3 on friday about midday and am on my second charge. I got 34 hrs with 4 hours of screen time and no battery saver enabled until it completely died. I need to go through a couple more full charge/discharges till the battery is fully broken in. So i would take any battery complaints with a grain of salt as the phone hasnt been out for a week so the battery hasnt been really been broken in.

also once L hits the g3 the battery life should see a good bump as well
