M9 or S6 if not currently an M8 ower? - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see a lot of people disappointed with the M9, mostly those who already own the M8. But if I'm not coming from being an M8 user, which should I go for? The M9 or S6?

It depends on what you are looking for in a phone. I'm buying the M9, mostly because it's going to be easier to root and install custom ROMs on in. And the battery is bigger .
Got the M7 now btw.

S6 has TouchWiz, an AMOLED display that can do ambient display, a better camera, a slightly bigger screen, you can technically replace the battery, no SD card, it's fragile (made out of glass), it has a nice payment system, and a fingerprint reader. The M9 has Sense 7, stereo front facing speakers, SD card support, you can't normally replace the battery, an LCD screen that should have better color accuracy and less risk of burn-in, on-screen buttons, an all-metal construction with a curved back (more comfortable), and a bigger battery. The display resolution difference is impossible to distinguish most of the time so I wouldn't worry about that. So what's more important to you? In my opinion, HTC has better hardware and software design overall, but Samsung has a better camera and a few extra features. So I'd go with the M9. Don't worry about the design not being updated, since like you say, you didn't have the other phone that looks like it, so you shouldn't care. iPhones also keep design for a few years, and no one complains about them.

I have m8 and I am very much leaning toward s6. I was hoping for a new design with m9 but I guess HTC want it to play it safe. I might wait for LG G4 announcement before going for s6.

I have the m8 and will be getting the m9 plus/prime when it eventually comes out. I'm very happy that HTC has kept the same design as the m8 is already the most gorgeous looking android smartphone out there and the m9 makes it even better. Samsung had no choice changing the design as they were loosing a lot of sales and their phones didn't feel premium as they were plastic.

I'll probably go with the M9. Samsung used to have 3 things going for them. Unlockable, SD card support, and removable battery. They're taking all of that away. With HTC still currently being unlockable and having SD card support, they win by a land slide.

As for me coming from a HTC Butterfly. I will choose the M9. Because of unlockable and sd card. I'm the one who likes to root, flash custom roms. But from what i can see from Note 3 Exynos vs Note 3 snapdragon. Snapdragon ver seems to have much more to play around with. (I didn't check out other models) S6 only offers Exynos processor, so its a deal breaker for me.

Why Buy M8 Google Play Edition?

To me, it seems like a strange offering. Sense is already pretty low on bloat, and the M8 is kind of a pain to use without the motion gestures. If you wanted a stock phone, your only real advantages with the M8 over the Nexus 5 are better battery life and expandable storage (ok BoomSound too).
Nexus 5 is $300 less, is lighter, smaller, easier to unlock/lock, and gets updates faster.
I'm not trying to hate on it, but could anyone who ordered one post why?
Thanks!!

I for one absolutely loved my HTC One, and I love my Nexus 5. I know it's a lot of money, but to me it's worth it. HTC speakers with expandable storage with stock android out of the box. I rooted my old HTC One to flash the GPE Rom, but I'd prefer not to. $700 is a lot for me, but I can save up for it.

I can currently afford it, but 1. It's a lot more than other phones and 2. (More importantly) we'd have to wait 2 weeks. It's a nice phone and all, but is the GPE really worth it with no motion gesture?

Custom kernels will allow you to unlock with a double tap of the screen. its not too hard to implement.
Additionally, the M8 has a few advantages over the Nexus 5.
1. Much nicer looking device, beautiful full body aluminum.
2. Better speakers. Boomsound is amazing.
3. Better camera. The Nexus 5's camera is pretty weak.
4. IR blaster on the M8.
5. Better battery life.
6. Expandable storage. 32gb on the Nexus 5 just isnt enough for some people.
Nitpicks - Slightly better processor (801 vs 800) and slightly better screen, not pixel wise but there's no better 1080p screen on the market than those from HTC. Hold the M8 side by side with any other screen and you'll see the difference.
So there are a few reasons to chose the M8 over the Nexus 5. But yes, the $700 price tag is pretty expensive. Alternatively you can save $50 by buying the Dev version and flashing a GPE rom when they come out. Personally, thats what I'm doing.
A couple things:
1. Nexus actually has a better camera. If you look at the Nexus 5 photos thread, they look astounding (4.4.2 greatly increased the cameras performance--yet almost all reviews happened before that.
2. Actually, the Galaxy S5 has the best 1080p display on the market (per DisplayMate's testing).
Not that the M8 has a bad camera or display, just a couple of technical things (camera may be more subjective however, but with OIS and amazing HDR+ the Nexus takes some astounding photographs). And yeah, the M8 does have a better screen than the N5, but I thought I'd mention the S5's is better than both.
As for the kernels, I'm not too big in modding (even though I've done it plenty), so the tap thing I'd be hesitant to add myself unless it turned out flawless.
Also, I'd much rather get the GPE and flash because I had a terrible experience with the Play ROM on my S4--barely any apps would work, slow--and I'd get to deal with Google's service instead of HTC's XD
I personally don't need/want expandable storage, simply because if I have it I feel weird unless I fill it with the largest capacity card available ($150 more ). Only things that really matter to me are the battery life, screen, CPU, and better one-handed usage. But I guess that's enough to make people upgrade to any new generation phone XD
Thing is, unless I'm SERIOUSLY blown away, I'm going to sell either for the Moto X2 and 360 this September, so that's kinda why I have trouble with the idea of spending that much money
I'm still mulling it over in my head 24/7 though XD

M9 all the way
Definitely m9 if it can take good pictures like m8 in low light. I'm really looking forward to see Toshiba 20mp camera. I don't care if m9 is not much different looking than m8 what I care about is the camera performance in low light because I know rest all will be awesome including boom sound, camera interface, sense 7 & build quality
Galaxy s6 ? what is a galaxy s6 ? a smartphone ?
LOL HTC M9 for sure
If this helps I recently traded in my m8 for the note 4 and it was pretty much a bad move on my part. If the touch wiz ui on the S6 is anything like what's on the note 4 you'd be wise to get the HTC. On the other hand, if you like phones that lag with the occasional 5-10 second freeze up then give it a shot.

I am going for HTC M9 as I like the look.
gs6 because samsung is the only company innovating, htc bringing the same design as last year, they dont even make their own internal parts
I had one samsung in the past, just one. The Samsung Infuse.
It had pretty colors, yeah.
But it sure was an ugly phone, and they haven't changed that.
Cheap plastic compared to a solid metal feel for the HTC
Cheap recycled TW elements since it was fist released vs the completely new Sense UI.
Thats just two major reasons for me. HTC is always better, and always will be.

The s6 has a metal frame and glass on both sides. personally I think samsung is really gonna raise the bar this time. The m9 is the m8 with a better camera. Not worth buying if you own the m8.

Probably the M9 for me but we don't know yet because the announcements have not been done yet. I might take the LG G4 if it all disappoints.
What I want in a device:
On-screen buttons
HD+ screen
32GB+ storage
Micro-sd slot
5 inch+

Innovation, riiiiiiiiiiiight
have fun with your extremely innovative curved screen which is actually a stupid gimmick, nothing more.
I have been loyal to htc for years. HTC TP, TP2, EVO 4G, EVO 3D, EVO LTE, M7, M8 and I'm sure you can guess what phone next. Anytime I use a samsung phone I can't stand touchwiz, it's truly awful and bloated. What would I do without the big clock widget? I hope it's still there this year.

I'd be putting a Nexus like ROM on either device, and while I REALLY want to buy the M9, the S6 just looks too good to pass up. If I was keeping it stock, I'd probably lean towards the M9.
So, now that we've seen the S6 marketing show - what are most thinking here? Love that HTC has fixed the low quality camera issue, would love to know if the MMS wonkiness is corrected too. I am very intrigued with the Edge screen on the S6 and the 1.9 aperture lens. Thoughts?

Good luck getting AOSP roms on Exynos processors. Cyanogenmod dropped support for the exynos phones because it's not open-source. If you want AOSP roms, get the HTC when you really want HTC or Samsung. You could also wait until LG announces the G4. I hope that will have what I'm looking for..
The Samsung Marketing show was very glitzy compared with HTC, I've pretty much been a fan of HTC from having the Hero, Sensation and M7, however after seeing the M9 the only thing for me was the camera, don't get me wrong the phone looks lovely but IMO the S6 Edge had the 'edge' for me. I can't upgrade until November so by then the two devices will have been well and truly dissected by then to see which is better.

Why m9

The upcoming flagahip M9 is already shaking the mobile world....and everyone is going for a M9.people buying m9 or love M9 ,what part of M9 is dragging you to buy a M9.share it with us....
Mines the 3gb ram and ofcourse sense7
For me not much. I am already using Sense 7 on m8 and even 2gb ram is plenty. I was really hoping for m9 to be waterproof and some improvments on design.

Same, the HTC One m8 is still at the top of the mobile world. Of course the HTC One M9 has bettery specs but really, is it going to be noticeable? Not really. It will be like adding 2gb of RAM to a computer that already has 16gb. You won't notice anything besides the aesthetics. Which stated by badboy we are already running on the M8. Its a good phone to get if you own a M7. Good phone to skip if you already have an M8.
But....But... T-Mobile M9 will have band 12 (700 mhz)

Snapdragon 810 with 4gb ram would have been perfect..
Well being a long time HTC owner, (EVO, Evo3d, EVO LTE, M7, M8 ) I was really hoping for more from HTC with the M9. Dont get me wrong its nice, but it just doesnt seem like much of an upgrade over the M8. I cant justify spending another $650 just for an extra 1GB of ram and a slightly faster processor. So far the camera actually seems a bit worse than the M8's camera (although with non final software) and considering the M8 will be getting all of the Sense 7 software tweaks I really dont see a reason to upgrade. Also it seems as though the camera on the M8 has a much wider viewing angle too! I dunno im just really disappointed in HTC for being lazy this time around. I love HTC's build quality and Sense, but im also a phone junkie and I look forward to having a new toy every year. I may have to go check out the Note 4 and give that a spin for a year until HTC gets serious about releasing a truly NEW flagship One series device.

I think m8 is a so well designed phone; HTC was probably afraid of taking risk with a new design. Imagine having m9 as a totally new design and getting hated by everyone.
Anyway, I am in the same boat as you. I don't think throwing another $650 is justifiable for extra 1GB ram and slightly faster CPU. I was hoping for a better camera but so far it has not impressed me. I really want to get the m9 but when I look at the specs and price tag; I am hesitant. Why HTC!!!!

Completely agree! I had really high hopes for the M9 after the evleaks render surfaced. I understand not wanting to change it up much, but atleast make a M7 to M8 type of change. Those two phones look similar yet are easy to tell apart. You really have to look closely at the M8 and M9 to tell them apart. I'm really confused as to what phone to get now lol. I just wanted a kick ass M9 lol.
I couldn't just make up my mind. With a lot of rumors going on and what not, guess I'd rather wait for actual reviews and then decide or maybe go to a store and check it out first
Personally, I don't think that the M9 was truly geared towards M8 users. Think about it...M7 users said the same thing about the M8 when it was released. Just skip this upgrade, that's all there is to it.
I am not compelled to get it, either. I wasn't even drooling over the leaks and press conference when it was about to be released like I was for the M8 (I owned the Evo LTE).
However, if my phone keeps acting up, I may get one...but no rush.
Honestly I find it kinda laughable that people would think a company that's desperately fighting to gain market share would design a phone that didn't appeal to everyone. I think HTC just became over confident in the design and figured everybody would appreciate it. I highly doubt they would make a phone that wasn't geared towards everybody including M8 owners. They aren't big enough to sit on their hands and recycle ideas just because they're HTC. Apple can do that because they are the ONLY iOS manufacturer and if u want the latest u have to buy from them. HTC is only one of the MANY manufacturers that make Android phones. Doesn't make sense to abandon a certain demographic if they are trying to stay relevant...
As an HTC One M7 user I can't wait to get the M9. I'm a Sense man & love the M7 but after 2 years I'm ready for the upgrade. I believe all the noise will die down as any issues get resolved. Samsung have upped their game but I'm with the HTC style. Bring it on!
Give me 5.5" or esle......iPhone plus 6S. Currently using M8 .

HTC ONE M9 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

Dear all,
time has come (and I got a great deal from my provider) to leave my beloved ONE M7 and upgrade to new phone.
My obvious two choices (both at the same price) are HTC One M9 and the Sammy S6.
I have never owned (apprt from my first free smartphone 8 years ago a crappy Sammy) anything but HTC and I must say that all in all I am quite happy with the company.
That been said I am in big dilemma this year which one to choose.
I was hopping to help with my decision giving me some feedback from your experience with M9 (especially after the camera software update).
Warm Regards
Both will be a great upgrade from the M7, although that in itself was also a lovely device.
That is a hard decision. I chose the HTC m9 because I'm on at&t and the Samsung will probably never get root. If the s6 was rootable (which it should be for you) I would have bought it no question. The camera on the s6 is the undisputed champion of cameras on smartphones. The camera on the HTC is fine but not great. The new design of the s6 is more exciting this year, while the HTC is about the same as last year. From what I've heard, the s6 is very speedy and fluid but so is the HTC. Decisions decisions.
Ive had the s6 for 2 weeks. Beleive me get the htc. Theres some rubbish things about it
I have been scathing of the M9, but the more I use it, the more I appreciate it.
Simple things like being able to get straight out of the dialer after a call to the desktop without a long lag, the ability to get vibrate or silent mode like Kitkat simply by turning down the volume, SD card storage (128gb S6 will be a unicorn I think or silly money), a perfectly good camera which performs equally as good as my Note 4 did, very fast operation, and equal battery life to the S6 are just a few reasons I went for the M9.
The lag on the S6 will be minor but apparent on the S6 after a little while of use, and a decent camera is no substitute for a lack of storage, fragile body, and huge protruding camera modules.
upgraded from the M7 myself didnt need to really as its still a great device, im loving the M9 just really waiting for original development to kick off properly, flar2 already working on his EX kernel which i know will eventually be awesome, development on HTC's is pretty much 2nd to none so is always a major plus for me, anyway I couldnt be happier with my choice to go with the m9, the camera nis very decent once you tweak the settings a bit and im sure this device will only get better with time and more mature software, its a hard decision granted and i doubt you will have regrets regardless what you choose. just my 2 pennies
Thanks a lot everyone you have been a great help.My mind is made up so it's M9 all the way! I have to wait a couple of days to get my hands on it but I am sure it will be worth the wait. Just one more question coming from the M7 was it easy to transfer contacts photos and music to M9?
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Free mobile app
I use HTC backup via dropbox for my settings, manually backup my music and photo's to my PC and all my contacts are stored on google so was completely painless, once complete was all setup in samreway as my M7 apart from a few minor settings,
Also there is a feature that pairs your devices via NFC and can transfer everything to your new phone via bluetooth but I didnt try that.

I just upgraded from a DNA to M9. I transferred almost 6 GB of music wirelessly from phone to phone very quickly. On the M9, go to Settings, scroll down to the Personal section, and tap on Get Content From Another Phone. It'll walk you through it. This for me was the easiest and fastest way.

Good choice. Other than the camera the s6 isnt as good as its hyped to be. Screen has awful whites and weird yellow . Pink. Green . Blue tints all over devices. Ive had 2. One was yellow. Next was pink. Its an issue all over xda. Most have this horrid problem. Touchwiz is boring. Design gets boring. Its almost too light. Like your holding air. Audio is pants. Battery sucks. Even with a custom rom. I havent enjoyed the s6 atall. Mainly down to the horrible screen tints that seems to pretty much be on all the handsets. Smh
I am using two devices for some time now, but I've had some issues with my S6 Edge, the screen rotation problem and give back to samsung and they returned back my money. HTC so far one of the best devices (M9) I've been using long time. So for so good except camera. Camera shoots bad quality photos compared to s6. 20,7mp camera is not better than m8's camera. If the camera on m9 was better, much more people would choose htc.
Between these two and ONLY these two? Probably the S6. Personally, I'd go for the G4 next month. I had massive problems with my S6, exchanged 3 times, gave up. Got the M9 for $300, and when compared to the $700 S6 it's a winner, but if the price is equal...

you asked in the HTC place, most will say M9 is better lol
I had the m8, and I'm just like you. I'm and HTC fan since the nexus one but I wasn't sure about the m9 because of the incremental update and the camera review but guess what.. I got it and its amazzzing !!
BTW, the camera is great just needs some tweaking thats all.
I never liked samsung or LG or most of the other phones, they really feel cheap but HTC feels damn premium.
Since you on the m7 it will be a big step with the m9, go for it and congratulation in advance.
Get the M9 unless camera quality is super important to you IMO. My S6 Edge had the rotation bug and I was not willing to risk getting stuck in a loop of getting defective replacements so I got the M9 to replace it. I'm not regretting it.
Things I did not like about my S6 Edge:
-Accelerometer defective out of the box
-Clueless and useless customer support. HTC support is way better
-Edge was very "sharp" feeling in hand
-Curve screen made things hard to type. Inside of my palm near my thumb kept "registering" on the screen as being touched.
-At certain angles, the whites looked pink
-Back button is on the right. WTF Samsung?
-Physical home button is still ugly, I don't like it.
-Phone is extremely light. Feels like a toy.
-Poor memory management. Apps had to keep reloading even when I had just used them.
-Touchwiz STILL has microstutters.
Things I liked about the S6 Edge:
-Screen was much brighter and more vibrant than the M9
-Camera took way better quality photos (which were upside down for me due to the rotation defect)
-Finger print reader worked flawlessly, way more convenient than PIN unlock
-First Samsung phone to look high quality
-Came with a fast charger. WTF HTC? Can't afford the extra 50 cents per phone?
-The speaker was surprisingly loud. Louder than my M9 (not nearly as good sounding, but still louder.)
I have both the m9 and a 128gb s6 edge. I love both devices for different reasons. They are both beautiful devices. That said my s6 has become my daily driver but really love both devices. I have my tablet sim in my m9 and do use it daily as well.
Having purchased (finally) my M9 I have to say after playing a bit yesterday with a friends S6 that I have no regrets what so ever. Touch Wiz is a nightmare and although the quality of construction of Samsung has apparently improved M9 is still a lot more robust and still feels like more premium. In fact my friend after playing with my M9 while I was playing with its S6 he commented "damned I made the wrong decision". BTW the let them stare motor of HTC is right on from what I can tell. Thanks guys for helping me make the right decision. ?

I had the s6 for 3 weeks. Samsung's quality control is shocking. Everything about the s6 is over rated. Screen is horrible

Thoughts on upgrading to M9

So I've been a loyal HTC customer since the first wildfire, then the sensation XE upto the M7. My 2 Year contract has just expired on the M7 and I have the choice of getting pretty much any new phone and I wanted the M9 at first but have read that the camera is sub-par and the screen isn't quite "up to date" in the android flagship space. I've also read that a camera update was recently sent out to M9 users but haven't seen much information of this update online. Is the camera that bad? And should I just get a Samsung Galaxy S6? Thanks in advance.

I went from the M7 to the M9 and couldn't be happier. I would take anything you read with a grain of salt, because there are an awful lot of drive-by reviews in the mobile space.
The latest firmware updates have addressed the launch issues, especially with the camera. I'm not sure what to tell you about the screen, as it's the same resolution as the M7, and so is to some respects "behind" phones with Quad HD displays. But do you really need a 4K display on a 5" screen? I personally cannot tell any real difference between my son's G3 and my M9. You might feel differently.
The best thing to do is go to the mobile store and play with the options. I would never get a Samsung, personally, but that's because 1) I can't stand TouchWiz, which is still a bloated abortion compared to Sense, and 2) Samsung phones are so locked down that modding is extremely limited.
If you care about development, take a look at the S6 forums first—Samsung is actively trying to shut down every exploit and block features like Samsung Pay if your phone is modded. Meanwhile, we have HTCdev over here and plenty of modding options.
Thanks for your quick reply my friend. And I also agree with you I've been a fan of sense ever since I've had my first HTC and now with sense 7 out comparing it to the touchwiz on the s6, sense looks much more matured. And of course I love modding You saying that the update has helped has made me turn my head towards the M9 much more. Thanks
The m9 isnt worth updating from the m7. Its not a big enough step up to warrant a new contract.. Wait for the m9 to drop in price then consider it.
The m7 is a beast of a phone and the screen is better than the m9. The only noticable difference is app loading speeds. Otherwise the m7 is a better all round device for now.
Another point is that the m7 is still up-datable to lollipop and the development side of things for m9 is rather slow at the moment due to the extra work for 64bit and sunshine charging $25 for s-off is a bit ridiculous. A tenner maybe but twenty five is just devs being greedy and cashing in on an opportunity rather than keeping a community alive. Pure scum imho.
