Thoughts on upgrading to M9 - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've been a loyal HTC customer since the first wildfire, then the sensation XE upto the M7. My 2 Year contract has just expired on the M7 and I have the choice of getting pretty much any new phone and I wanted the M9 at first but have read that the camera is sub-par and the screen isn't quite "up to date" in the android flagship space. I've also read that a camera update was recently sent out to M9 users but haven't seen much information of this update online. Is the camera that bad? And should I just get a Samsung Galaxy S6? Thanks in advance.

I went from the M7 to the M9 and couldn't be happier. I would take anything you read with a grain of salt, because there are an awful lot of drive-by reviews in the mobile space.
The latest firmware updates have addressed the launch issues, especially with the camera. I'm not sure what to tell you about the screen, as it's the same resolution as the M7, and so is to some respects "behind" phones with Quad HD displays. But do you really need a 4K display on a 5" screen? I personally cannot tell any real difference between my son's G3 and my M9. You might feel differently.
The best thing to do is go to the mobile store and play with the options. I would never get a Samsung, personally, but that's because 1) I can't stand TouchWiz, which is still a bloated abortion compared to Sense, and 2) Samsung phones are so locked down that modding is extremely limited.
If you care about development, take a look at the S6 forums first—Samsung is actively trying to shut down every exploit and block features like Samsung Pay if your phone is modded. Meanwhile, we have HTCdev over here and plenty of modding options.

Thanks for your quick reply my friend. And I also agree with you I've been a fan of sense ever since I've had my first HTC and now with sense 7 out comparing it to the touchwiz on the s6, sense looks much more matured. And of course I love modding You saying that the update has helped has made me turn my head towards the M9 much more. Thanks

The m9 isnt worth updating from the m7. Its not a big enough step up to warrant a new contract.. Wait for the m9 to drop in price then consider it.
The m7 is a beast of a phone and the screen is better than the m9. The only noticable difference is app loading speeds. Otherwise the m7 is a better all round device for now.
Another point is that the m7 is still up-datable to lollipop and the development side of things for m9 is rather slow at the moment due to the extra work for 64bit and sunshine charging $25 for s-off is a bit ridiculous. A tenner maybe but twenty five is just devs being greedy and cashing in on an opportunity rather than keeping a community alive. Pure scum imho.

Why m9

The upcoming flagahip M9 is already shaking the mobile world....and everyone is going for a M9.people buying m9 or love M9 ,what part of M9 is dragging you to buy a M9.share it with us....
Mines the 3gb ram and ofcourse sense7
For me not much. I am already using Sense 7 on m8 and even 2gb ram is plenty. I was really hoping for m9 to be waterproof and some improvments on design.

Same, the HTC One m8 is still at the top of the mobile world. Of course the HTC One M9 has bettery specs but really, is it going to be noticeable? Not really. It will be like adding 2gb of RAM to a computer that already has 16gb. You won't notice anything besides the aesthetics. Which stated by badboy we are already running on the M8. Its a good phone to get if you own a M7. Good phone to skip if you already have an M8.
But....But... T-Mobile M9 will have band 12 (700 mhz)

Snapdragon 810 with 4gb ram would have been perfect..
Well being a long time HTC owner, (EVO, Evo3d, EVO LTE, M7, M8 ) I was really hoping for more from HTC with the M9. Dont get me wrong its nice, but it just doesnt seem like much of an upgrade over the M8. I cant justify spending another $650 just for an extra 1GB of ram and a slightly faster processor. So far the camera actually seems a bit worse than the M8's camera (although with non final software) and considering the M8 will be getting all of the Sense 7 software tweaks I really dont see a reason to upgrade. Also it seems as though the camera on the M8 has a much wider viewing angle too! I dunno im just really disappointed in HTC for being lazy this time around. I love HTC's build quality and Sense, but im also a phone junkie and I look forward to having a new toy every year. I may have to go check out the Note 4 and give that a spin for a year until HTC gets serious about releasing a truly NEW flagship One series device.

I think m8 is a so well designed phone; HTC was probably afraid of taking risk with a new design. Imagine having m9 as a totally new design and getting hated by everyone.
Anyway, I am in the same boat as you. I don't think throwing another $650 is justifiable for extra 1GB ram and slightly faster CPU. I was hoping for a better camera but so far it has not impressed me. I really want to get the m9 but when I look at the specs and price tag; I am hesitant. Why HTC!!!!

Completely agree! I had really high hopes for the M9 after the evleaks render surfaced. I understand not wanting to change it up much, but atleast make a M7 to M8 type of change. Those two phones look similar yet are easy to tell apart. You really have to look closely at the M8 and M9 to tell them apart. I'm really confused as to what phone to get now lol. I just wanted a kick ass M9 lol.
I couldn't just make up my mind. With a lot of rumors going on and what not, guess I'd rather wait for actual reviews and then decide or maybe go to a store and check it out first
Personally, I don't think that the M9 was truly geared towards M8 users. Think about it...M7 users said the same thing about the M8 when it was released. Just skip this upgrade, that's all there is to it.
I am not compelled to get it, either. I wasn't even drooling over the leaks and press conference when it was about to be released like I was for the M8 (I owned the Evo LTE).
However, if my phone keeps acting up, I may get one...but no rush.
Honestly I find it kinda laughable that people would think a company that's desperately fighting to gain market share would design a phone that didn't appeal to everyone. I think HTC just became over confident in the design and figured everybody would appreciate it. I highly doubt they would make a phone that wasn't geared towards everybody including M8 owners. They aren't big enough to sit on their hands and recycle ideas just because they're HTC. Apple can do that because they are the ONLY iOS manufacturer and if u want the latest u have to buy from them. HTC is only one of the MANY manufacturers that make Android phones. Doesn't make sense to abandon a certain demographic if they are trying to stay relevant...
As an HTC One M7 user I can't wait to get the M9. I'm a Sense man & love the M7 but after 2 years I'm ready for the upgrade. I believe all the noise will die down as any issues get resolved. Samsung have upped their game but I'm with the HTC style. Bring it on!
Give me 5.5" or esle......iPhone plus 6S. Currently using M8 .

Please tell my why I shouldn't return the M9 for an S6!

I've had my M9 for 2 days now, and I'm starting to see things that are disappointing to me. Especially for such a high end, pricey device. Battery life is not very good at all compared to my old LG G2. And it takes forever to charge. The camera is, for lack of a better word, horrible.
I'm trying to decide if I should return it to T-Mobile in exchange for a Galaxy S6. All the reviews I've read and watched lean toward the S6.
Tell me why or why not?
Base on the reviews, only the hardcore HTC fans are going to choose M9 over the S6.
Quite honestly if you have a chance to return the phone I suggest you should.
I have a feeling this phone will be a complete flop and will probably put the nail in the coffin.
I'm personally going to wait a few weeks after this phone hit the bargain bin before I make a purchase.

Have you ever had a Samsung phone? I have a Galaxy S4 and from I've experienced, touchwiz has got to be the most laggy skin. I can't go ten minutes without my phone freezing up for a few seconds. Not to mention, the battery life on it is awful. Also, if you ever want to root or flash your phone, I'd stay away from Samsung. Rooting is possible if you have an unlocked bootloader (which you should because it's T-Mobile) but since the GS6 is using an in-house processor that is locked down, roms like Cyanogen mod aren't supported. Lastly, you have to pay much more to get a higher storage capacity GS6 because there's no SD card slot. Of course, all of these things may not matter to you but I for one am tired of buying phones but not owning them. I will be buying an unlocked HTC One M9 straight from HTC. That way, I don't have to put up with the carriers anymore and I can truly do whatever I want with my phone. Hope this helps.
It's always a risk getting a new phone, but have to say the M8 was a more solid phone than the M9 in many ways.
As for Samsung, they are very laggy and tend to annoy me over time. The camera of the S6 will blow the M9 away, so if that's your focus then go for it.
*drum rolls* looks like M8s is on the way. Just when you thought the party was almost over. I have lost words for HTC by now.

All the reviews I'm reading say that Samsung has optimized touchwiz and it's very fluent now, and the battery, although smaller than the M9's, is much better due to the CPU.
Sense man.. For me it's always been that that has cut the decision...
I can't go on any other launcher, i just don't like them.. Used to Sense (and TouchFlo) so much now that i just cannot switch anymore..
Guess you could call that a reason for you too if the launcher is anything important to you.
Sense, really? Choose a sub par device in pretty much every category because Sense is really that good? NOT
I think if I could put the M9's speakers into the S6, my choice would be a no brainer.
The LG G2 is an anomaly when it comes to battery life. Heck, they couldn't even replicate it with the G3. If battery life is your singular focus then stay with the G2. But you can't expected the G2 to be the baseline going forward for comparison.
I've had the G2. I've had the Nexus 5 and I'm on day 2 of the M9. The M9 blows those 2 phones out of the water in terms of the smoothies of operation. It isn't even close. I'm sure the hardware of the S6 will provide for similar possibilities but I am going to have to read a lot of reviews the says that this is a new TouchWiz for Samsung before I believe that that phone will not bog down in software over time.

Subpar in every category? That's nonsense.
Samsung Galaxy S6 vs HTC One M9: Turning the Tables: https://youtu.be/z5tqAaXkRv8
Just one thing to add: If you're looking to the S6 for battery life, look again. My S6 has some HORRIBLE battery drain, and it seems like most people have it. Software updates are definitely needed.

I would choose an HTC any day over that hideous mess they use to call touch wiz.
Gs6 has an exynos processor. Good luck getting bug free aosp roms on that. Many devs stopped deving for exynos devices because of how closed they are. Things need to be hacked together pretty badly and even then it doesn't work fully. Samsung is much more closed than qualcomm is. So I would pick what you call a sub par device that has a processor that a lot of devs are familiar with deving for (qualcomm in general not the 810) and quite honestly I'd pick an iPhone over a Samsung device. That's how much I despise their UI.

I went with the M9 and I'm not a HTC fanboy. Yes I have had the m7 and m8 but also during that time I've owned countless other phones. I'll give anything a shot except Samsung. I don't mind using a Samsung note 10.1 but I will only use it for notes. But not for anything else

Say what you want but me and most consumers I'm not going to pay a premium for device with 2014 hardware.
I'll wait 2 or 3 months and wait for the carriers to slash the price of this humongous flop of a phone.
And if you think developers are going to develop for the M9, good luck. The M9 won't sell enough units to warrant any development.

It will for sure get a more stable AOSP build than the S6 will. But THB I'm happy with Sense. For the first time I can say I like a skinned version more than stock. I'm not a fan of the overall look of stock lollipop(love stock KK though) and I think HTC did a nice job with Sense. The only way I would consider an S6 if there could an almost bugfree build of AOSP like many of the qualcomm devices. With Samsung, the camera will never work right, other UI things will never work fully because of how closed Samsung keeps it. And I don't need anyone else to develop for it. Anything I want to do I can do on my own just fine and if I can't... I learn . I was making a point that people pick phones for many reasons, I personally hate touchwiz. I look at Samsung's UI and I just want to puke. I do think it's a really nice piece of HW, It would have been better with a Qualcomm chip that way you can ditch TW and at least have a decent stock experience but that won't happen with the exynos chip.
M9 has faults yes. But tweak ability is great. I have the m9 in my hands and my gf the s6. Ill take the m9 anytime over the s6.

First in my experience the M9's battery is very decent (haven't looked at stats or sot) but I'm a heavy user and it lasts me the day which is all that matters.
The Camera on the M9 is not terrible but the optics on the S6 are better.
The build & design of the M9 is subjective obviously we all have different likes, but for me HTC still has the S6 beat here. The S6 is a huge step up from any previous Samsung phone though.
The fluidity well when I tested side by side both are very nice here and are very very fast, Samsung has the better option to quick launch the camera.
Sense & touchwiz well for me who is tired of the latter sense is the better of the two, and blinkfeed is also better than I forget Samsung's thingie lol
Theme manager this is miles ahead of Samsung's attempt.
Storage, well the M9 being 32gb base storage is fantastic & expendable, S6 you loose this option.
Boomsound & audio, well obviously HTC has this as front facing audio is always going to be better, but the quality is the best I have experienced on any phone & I have had quite a few. Headphones this applies to but can't compare with the S6 so I don't know, but assume the M9 is better.
Each phone has plus points and negatives, for me though the M9 was the better choice for my liking.
I have had a lot of Samsung devices and just think all round despite the M9's flaws its the better phone (for me).
Both are great devices and Samsung has done very very well with the S6 & Edge.
If a phone doesn't meet your needs or you think its poor then your under no obligation to keep it, return for what will put a smile on the face

[q] s6 or m9

Alright I have the M8 currently, going to upgrade today or within the week/month. I love my M8 right? I also love how I can flash stuff on it (I have Verizon sadly), but I was thinking, theres really only a few things I use with S-OFF requirements and I'm not sure if its really worth buying the M9 just for those when the S6 has so many more things to offer that I may actually use, I am aware of one thing however, TouchWiz will never match Sense/Stock android in speed, my phone runs AOSP though it was Sense 6 for a long time, both are blazing fast. I did take a chance to use the S6 however and it was quite fast in comparison to previous models. I'm just really having a hard time deciding, the new S6/Edge look quite innovative vs the refining path of the M9, it's sort of attracting me but I'm not sure if I'm making a mistake. Before my M8 was the S4 and I HATED it, but the S6 is a different case, new less crap look and faster (faster vs older galaxies)+ more features. Not sure what I want to do. Any advice? I upgrade yearly so whatever I choose I am stuck with for the coming year.

Well I praise the M9 yes its somewhat moderate of an upgrade from the M8. HTC are getting a lot of heat for what they produced.
However I am not an all out spec junkie, and what the M9 provides is great for me.
Positives are and I will include the Camera as I like to play around with settings and once you do its very acceptable, but admittedly not on par with the S6
The Sense 7 skin is great & themes are fantastic.
The M9 is fast & fluid and I haven't had any overheating or lag or any hiccup really.
The Audio is superb and best I have experienced on any device to date.
The battery is on the better side of average at least in my experience.
The build and in hand feel is again fantastic.
Micro SD card expansion.
The S6 is a beautiful build also with better optics and no doubt with ois steadier in video capture.
Its really your call and you may want to jump on the hype bandwagon or you may see sense
you can always get a s6 and try it out. samsung usually holds their value better. so if anything you can always trade someone off cl or so for a m9 + cash on their end. just a thought that you won't be stuck on one device forever lol.
s6 edge makes me want to buy it with all the hype and that stupid super camera they put in there's. but development will most likely keep my interest in m9.

I decided I'm going to go with the S6 or S6 Edge, will decide upon trying them both again. If I don't like it, i'll sell it on eBay and buy the M9 or something else if something potentially better is available by then. I sort of made this decision based on I realized the only thing I've really done with my M8 being S-OFF is LiquidSmooth and a few root things, and of course TWRP backups but since I won't be doing ROM's on this it won't really be necessary and besides I can always use that half-4$$'ed version they have for locked phones. Anyways gonna give Samsung a go again, as I said if I don't like it, M9 here I come! If I do and miss my M8 i'll just switch between phones a lot. All ways are a win and I get to try the S6 for an extended time.

HTC ONE M9 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

Dear all,
time has come (and I got a great deal from my provider) to leave my beloved ONE M7 and upgrade to new phone.
My obvious two choices (both at the same price) are HTC One M9 and the Sammy S6.
I have never owned (apprt from my first free smartphone 8 years ago a crappy Sammy) anything but HTC and I must say that all in all I am quite happy with the company.
That been said I am in big dilemma this year which one to choose.
I was hopping to help with my decision giving me some feedback from your experience with M9 (especially after the camera software update).
Warm Regards
Both will be a great upgrade from the M7, although that in itself was also a lovely device.
That is a hard decision. I chose the HTC m9 because I'm on at&t and the Samsung will probably never get root. If the s6 was rootable (which it should be for you) I would have bought it no question. The camera on the s6 is the undisputed champion of cameras on smartphones. The camera on the HTC is fine but not great. The new design of the s6 is more exciting this year, while the HTC is about the same as last year. From what I've heard, the s6 is very speedy and fluid but so is the HTC. Decisions decisions.
Ive had the s6 for 2 weeks. Beleive me get the htc. Theres some rubbish things about it
I have been scathing of the M9, but the more I use it, the more I appreciate it.
Simple things like being able to get straight out of the dialer after a call to the desktop without a long lag, the ability to get vibrate or silent mode like Kitkat simply by turning down the volume, SD card storage (128gb S6 will be a unicorn I think or silly money), a perfectly good camera which performs equally as good as my Note 4 did, very fast operation, and equal battery life to the S6 are just a few reasons I went for the M9.
The lag on the S6 will be minor but apparent on the S6 after a little while of use, and a decent camera is no substitute for a lack of storage, fragile body, and huge protruding camera modules.
upgraded from the M7 myself didnt need to really as its still a great device, im loving the M9 just really waiting for original development to kick off properly, flar2 already working on his EX kernel which i know will eventually be awesome, development on HTC's is pretty much 2nd to none so is always a major plus for me, anyway I couldnt be happier with my choice to go with the m9, the camera nis very decent once you tweak the settings a bit and im sure this device will only get better with time and more mature software, its a hard decision granted and i doubt you will have regrets regardless what you choose. just my 2 pennies
Thanks a lot everyone you have been a great help.My mind is made up so it's M9 all the way! I have to wait a couple of days to get my hands on it but I am sure it will be worth the wait. Just one more question coming from the M7 was it easy to transfer contacts photos and music to M9?
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Free mobile app
I use HTC backup via dropbox for my settings, manually backup my music and photo's to my PC and all my contacts are stored on google so was completely painless, once complete was all setup in samreway as my M7 apart from a few minor settings,
Also there is a feature that pairs your devices via NFC and can transfer everything to your new phone via bluetooth but I didnt try that.

I just upgraded from a DNA to M9. I transferred almost 6 GB of music wirelessly from phone to phone very quickly. On the M9, go to Settings, scroll down to the Personal section, and tap on Get Content From Another Phone. It'll walk you through it. This for me was the easiest and fastest way.

Good choice. Other than the camera the s6 isnt as good as its hyped to be. Screen has awful whites and weird yellow . Pink. Green . Blue tints all over devices. Ive had 2. One was yellow. Next was pink. Its an issue all over xda. Most have this horrid problem. Touchwiz is boring. Design gets boring. Its almost too light. Like your holding air. Audio is pants. Battery sucks. Even with a custom rom. I havent enjoyed the s6 atall. Mainly down to the horrible screen tints that seems to pretty much be on all the handsets. Smh
I am using two devices for some time now, but I've had some issues with my S6 Edge, the screen rotation problem and give back to samsung and they returned back my money. HTC so far one of the best devices (M9) I've been using long time. So for so good except camera. Camera shoots bad quality photos compared to s6. 20,7mp camera is not better than m8's camera. If the camera on m9 was better, much more people would choose htc.
Between these two and ONLY these two? Probably the S6. Personally, I'd go for the G4 next month. I had massive problems with my S6, exchanged 3 times, gave up. Got the M9 for $300, and when compared to the $700 S6 it's a winner, but if the price is equal...

Dear all,
time has come (and I got a great deal from my provider) to leave my beloved ONE M7 and upgrade to new phone.
Warm Regards

you asked in the HTC place, most will say M9 is better lol
I had the m8, and I'm just like you. I'm and HTC fan since the nexus one but I wasn't sure about the m9 because of the incremental update and the camera review but guess what.. I got it and its amazzzing !!
BTW, the camera is great just needs some tweaking thats all.
I never liked samsung or LG or most of the other phones, they really feel cheap but HTC feels damn premium.
Since you on the m7 it will be a big step with the m9, go for it and congratulation in advance.
Get the M9 unless camera quality is super important to you IMO. My S6 Edge had the rotation bug and I was not willing to risk getting stuck in a loop of getting defective replacements so I got the M9 to replace it. I'm not regretting it.
Things I did not like about my S6 Edge:
-Accelerometer defective out of the box
-Clueless and useless customer support. HTC support is way better
-Edge was very "sharp" feeling in hand
-Curve screen made things hard to type. Inside of my palm near my thumb kept "registering" on the screen as being touched.
-At certain angles, the whites looked pink
-Back button is on the right. WTF Samsung?
-Physical home button is still ugly, I don't like it.
-Phone is extremely light. Feels like a toy.
-Poor memory management. Apps had to keep reloading even when I had just used them.
-Touchwiz STILL has microstutters.
Things I liked about the S6 Edge:
-Screen was much brighter and more vibrant than the M9
-Camera took way better quality photos (which were upside down for me due to the rotation defect)
-Finger print reader worked flawlessly, way more convenient than PIN unlock
-First Samsung phone to look high quality
-Came with a fast charger. WTF HTC? Can't afford the extra 50 cents per phone?
-The speaker was surprisingly loud. Louder than my M9 (not nearly as good sounding, but still louder.)
I have both the m9 and a 128gb s6 edge. I love both devices for different reasons. They are both beautiful devices. That said my s6 has become my daily driver but really love both devices. I have my tablet sim in my m9 and do use it daily as well.
Having purchased (finally) my M9 I have to say after playing a bit yesterday with a friends S6 that I have no regrets what so ever. Touch Wiz is a nightmare and although the quality of construction of Samsung has apparently improved M9 is still a lot more robust and still feels like more premium. In fact my friend after playing with my M9 while I was playing with its S6 he commented "damned I made the wrong decision". BTW the let them stare motor of HTC is right on from what I can tell. Thanks guys for helping me make the right decision. ?

I had the s6 for 3 weeks. Samsung's quality control is shocking. Everything about the s6 is over rated. Screen is horrible

Purchase an M9 or an M8

Hi All
I used to own an M9, youve probably seen me post on here before, however, I sold the M9 on as I was so dissappointed by the camera(I know its not an SLR, but the M9 camera wasnt even decent in low light and while I have my trusty Canon, as a candid photographer, Ii do like to have a "snapper" with me to catch those moments), but i do love the speakers and Im a huge fan of sense UI.
My local store have both the M8 for £350 and the M9 for £500, BNIB and both unbranded and I do know the M8 is getting sense 7 plus alot oif the M9 features
So as they are pretty much the same phone, Has the M9 phone and camera improved to warrant the £150 extra.. or should i Just grab the M8 and wait for the M10 next year.
Thanks
In my opinion (And the specs of course), the M9 is better than the M8 in every way.
The biggest issue people have is that the M9 didn't really bring any new features but there is doubt the M9 is the better phone which is a great achievement as the M8 really was the best phone released last year.

Thanks for the reply, can I ask.. Have you noticed an improvement through updates in the camera since release
Thanks
I don't really use it to be honest, but in the thread at the top of this section there have been a great number of updates all around the device and that definitely includes camera updates.
I like the camera I use the fv-5 camera. I'M not a big picture taker. I had to Play with it to form my own opinion

The M9 is an amazing phone... But the M8 is also an amazing phone. I think if you are going "on contract" or an installment plan, you might as well get the M9. If you are buying outside of a contract with the idea of upgrading in a year, I'd go with the M8 (if it's a lot cheaper).
As mentioned above, the M9 is a great phone and worth it if going the new to the "ONE" series of phones. The camera is better in almost every way, except in darker settings. I play in a band and spend a lot of time in dimly lit places (aka: night clubs). I like to take pictures of the crowd, my band and my gear while at a show...The M8 takes better pictures in this setting. I also spend a lot of time with the family camping and doing outdoors stuff and the M9 does an AMAZING job with outdoor/daytime shots, but as I mentioned already it does pretty bad with darker shots, whereas the M8 does much better. The M8 also does a decent job at day shots, but you can't really zoom in any while taking the picture or afterwards (crop in too much) without it being really grainy.
Everything else is pretty identical and I'd be hard-pressed to tell a difference in speed between the two while running programs and playing games. The M9 has a 64bit processor, but not sure that means a whole lot right now?
So basically.......You can't go wrong either way, just depends on how much you want to spend? Do you want a great phone (M8) or a greater phone (M9)?
Honestly.... As much as I like my M9, I wish I could go back and keep my M8 until the M10 came out.
One last thing to mention: If you're into custom ROMs, the M8 has MANY more custom ROMs available.....Sense, GPe, AOSP, CM, ect... But the one's available for the M9 seem much more stable.
