VoLTE, anyone else getting it besides me? Here's a warning for you about it... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

About 2 weeks ago, I started noticing that my phone wasn't receiving calls, texts, or voicemail alerts, unless I manually set it to 4G, or if I made a call and my phone would switch by itself from 4G LTE to 4G, like it always did. So the problem was that it wasn't switching to 4G when receiving calls or texts. I would get a barrage of texts, voicemail alerts when I would call someone. After flashing different roms, I decided to revert to the latest stock T-Mobile fw and it worked fine. So I'm making a call by swiping right on the contacts name, and instead of seeing "calling" it says "VoLTE call HD" and my phone stays on 4G LTE during calls and is always on now, for obvious reasons of course. This sucks because I can't flash different roms, I'm stuck with the latest stock, which is BS. From what I've read so far, there are no custom roms with this VoLTE working.

I think Tmo introduced VoLTE and HD calls last summer, or even before that, but I'm not sure why would that suck? you just have more choices which poison to take. I'm sure at some point developers will figure how to make both work, maybe already did. HD calls are a little finicky, phones on each end need to support it and VoLTE is important only when there is no other signal except LTE, so neither should be a deal breaker for most part. I think bigger issue would be the reason you switched to stock in the first place, where phone doesn't work anymore.

Why did I switch to stock? Because I wasn't receiving calls, texts,or voicemail alerts since they implemented VoLTE. It stays stuck on 4G LTE, instead of switching to 4G. Even when I turn off the feature in the latest stock, it acts the same way as I explained in other roms. I cannot receive calls, so LTE becomes useless. There is literally NO roms that I can use, unless I have it set manually to 4G (WCDMA/GSM). So I cannot use any other roms, I'm use to flashing different roms, experimenting, now that's out the window, unless I sacrifice LTE. Why pay damn near $80 a month for something I am not using? This is ridiculous.

Tweaked Rom works great with VOLTE.
Try to look a little harder before you rant.
Almost 5000 posts in the thread so it's never been far from the top of the list for the past 7 months. More reading and less typing is my recommendation for you.

I will keep speaking my mind and inform T-Mo users about what will happen when VoLTE arrives for them. I HAVE read, and there are a BUNCH of reasons why I chose not to use that particular rom when it first came out and about 2 weeks ago when VoLTE hit. I'd rather be on stock as of right now. I don't think any of our members have a clue about VoLTE and how limited they will be when it hits them. Either way, thanks for reading my thread and ur suggestion.

I've updated my PRL and profile several times. My old phone was slow too. Could something be wrong with my account?

It could be your area. Try testing in different locations. If it's still slow, then it may be your account.
Sometimes if you use a lot of data, there is some evidence to suggest sprint may throttle you.
The other thing could be your phone. If you have a lot of processes going, even ones that don't use data, it can still affect the phones ability to work properly.
I would try ruling those out and then call Sprint.

There is a thread for this already, a lot of people are having this same problem, including me. It started around November, when before, I would constantly get at least 1500kbps down and up, as both my home and work are less than a block from a tower.
After one day for some reason, I can NEVER get anything above 100kpbs, and it usually doesnt work at all. I have done everything, and sprint, stupidly, thinks that its a hardware problem every time, and since November, they have given me 5 brand new evo's. ALL have the exact same problem. I'm no expert, but 5 brand new phones dont all have the same problem. I have called CS MANY MANY times, and they refuse to check their end, saying every time that "our network is fine".
Whats weird, every friend I have on sprint, their phones are fine, even 3 year old phones. Whats even weirder, my friend with an evo, and the evo's in the sprint store all are fine. But with this thread on here, and a long thread on AF, there seems to be an isolated issue with a lot of people.

Well you can count me in as an isolated issue. My 3G has been fine for like 2 years now, and all of the sudden, I'd say the past month or more, total crap. It's taking me about 5 minutes or more to download a 2mb app update on the market. 4G is still good. I really wish I knew what was going on. I do the same Profile and PRL updates like the OP daily.
Well its definitely not my 3g being "slow". I am just not connecting to it. Qik errors and says I am not connected to 3g. My data status says 1x RTT for my connection. I need to call sprint.

Problems in Extended Network Area

I really want to keep this phone, so please help me out, lol. I am in an extended network area for Verizon. My Gnex drops 3g and it will not come back for hours or longer. The phone will show a signal, full bars -75 signal strength, but the 3g icon will not be there, so no email, speed test, web browsing.
I tried two gnex's and sim cards. The Rezound I have works perfect right next to the gnex, so I don't know what to think? They are both on the same prl. I called verizon, but they are no help, pull battery, factory reset, ect. I tried all the radio's I can find, tried three roms.
I am at a loss, if I can't figure it out I will be forced to live with a rezound for the next two years, help please, thanks.........Brian

Shot in the dark here, but did you enable Data Roaming in the Mobile Network settings? When I was in Indiana a while back (when I still used my Nexus One on T-Mo) it wouldn't use data until I turned on roaming. Which is kinda silly, because that setting is meant for international roaming, but then again America isn't a typical wireless market.
Yes, that and automatic, tried lte/cdma, and cdma only. Tried all the normal stuff, pulling the sim card, ect. It is weird these phones do this, but the rezound just plain works.........
Nothing? Amazon just sent me a brand new Rezound to try, but I really like the gnex, but I need good data. Thanks..........Brian

Automatic is the right setting.
Radio could matter.
LTE/CDMA shouldn't matter.
ROM doesn't matter (at all).
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to Phone information and post a screenshot (scroll down just enough to move the IMEI/MEID and your Phone number out of view to save yourself from some post-editing).

I have the exact same issue. I live in a 3G Extended Network area. Data on Droid X worked fine. Got Galaxy Nexus knowing I wouldn't have 4G (3G has been perfect for me). I was out of town when I got it in a Verizon Network. Drove home and...well...no data on Galaxy Nexus. Told Verizon tier 2, and they said it was a "known issue". I've flashed all radios and combinations and nothing has worked yet.
There isn't much you can do, but I bet if you petition/complain enough VZW could actually expand the network. Get others in your area to call in about it. You can't really blame the phone, even if the Rezound is working correctly.
Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. I'm also in an extended coverage only area and tend to have 6 or 7 hour stretches of no data. I've gotten two nexuses and neither has been better than the other. Previously had a Droid that never lost signal. As far as getting them to expand their network here, it won't happen because of some stupid municipal law in the county I live in that only allows a certain number of wireless providers and vzw was late to the party. In my case, I'm holding out hope that my situation will improve when the provider here (Cellcom) lunches their 4g network in q2 since they are one of the rural roaming partners for verizon.

[q] verizon 4g lte drops connection

I have a nexus on verizon and occasionally drops my mobile connection (voice and data) when I have 4g enabled. Everything works and stays up when I only have it set for 3g. I'm using the latest radio and bootloader with BB jellybean.
Has anybody had this issue before and was able to fix it with a software update or does it usually end up with having to exchange the phone? I'm really hesitant on swapping phones because everything else works great except for this issue. I was wondering if I could fix it with re-flashing everything.

I have same problem. I purchased my phone from eBay a couple days ago and I installed BB JellyBean after activated it. I didn't really care about 4g at the time. But, now with JellyBean, I can't use 4g (full-coverage) because it drops 4g/voice within a couple of seconds and I do not have any connection. However, with 3g only, everything works great.
I don't know if I purchased faulty device or not. But, everything works fine except 4g. I read many complaints about 4g connection on Nexus. so, I may just deal with it because I can live with JellyBean and 3g data with unlimited plan.
does it happen on ICS? JB hasnt been officially released for the vzw nexus.
return to stock and see if it happens.

I'm going thru something similar...I think the radios on the vzw gnex are not the best. I've been tweeting @vzwsupport ..they told me to remove sim card wait for 30 secs put back in and check but connection still sucks. Granted, I just want 3g...no 4g in my area. Just be hearing back from them in a few.

Problems with calls and text (to iPhone)

Ok so here is the issue. I have 2 phones (Note3 on Tmobile, and Samsung Rugby Smart...workphone on AT&T). My fiancè has an iPhone on AT&T and she rarely recieves my calls and texts. I thought at first it was the iPhone...but it seems like it is my Note. We did a test...i sent a text from the note and rugby, the rugby went through, note did not. Same thing with calls....I ended up doing a warranty exchange with Tmobile (not very happy about that..since they sent me a re-manufactured device), and this is still happening.
Any thoughts...suggestions...?
Thanks in advance.
(P.s.....i am not routed, iphone not jailbroken)

Sounds more like a network or interoperability issue. I test iPhone users without issues. Not sure which carrier they are on though.
Try turning off wifi. I have seen posts about issues with wifi and sms/mms. I've never had a problem, but might as well try. Also try texting from the note to your work phone, and back. Are you using the stock messaging app or a third party one? Try stock.
Another option is using the sim from your work phone. You will need Tmobile to give you an unlock code. If you explain what you are doing, I think they will give you one. Or try an att prepaid sim if your work phone uses a different size.
It sounds more like a Tmobile to att network problem to me... But that can narrow it down. Try disabling LTE for testing. I wonder if VoLTE is part of it...

These problems were before VoLte. She does not have rhe iphone cloud texting app setting activated either. I do appreciate your suggestions! Thank you.
I have tried everything....been to both Tmobile and Apple/At&T stores, troubleshot networks, master reset both phones.......
Just all out of ideas.

Before the Note 3 were you using an iPhone? If so, it may be an Apple issue. Google for Apple iPhone iMessage
I had an iphone in Early 2010. Think i ditched it for an HTC evo in March 2010..??

So you got your new 5G device, seems faster....

I've been wondering how it could be that T-mo could get such an extensive 5G network up so quickly? Then today while perusing through my phone I came across this sweet little nugget.
Spoiler: Fake it til ya make it!!!

This explains the slowing of older 4G devices on T-mo's network. They're just pushing more bandwidth over 4G to "special devices" and making a grip on suckers like us buying into "5G". Same thing ATT did with an icon change, but ours is baked in.
Someone doesn't seem to know how NSA works. Your screenshot even shows NR-RSRP with NR-SNR.

It only shows true when 5g data is being actively used.
It only registers it when in active use because of the fact that 4g is the default default when it comes to most phone functions.
Texting, phone calls, mms all go through 4g.
You can also verify that whole deal through my LTE configuration in the screenshot.

Gotta remember, it wasn't too long ago that people thought granting permission for internal storage would end up with their info gone or some other semi-sensationalist dribble.
This was the same way with early 4G phones. The first gen 4G radios used HSDPA+ which late gen 3G radios would connect to, but not fully utilize. How products and services are marketed are always divorced from what they really are, they won't outright lie, but they take advantage that the average customer won't read the fine print, are not engineers, and would complain to bbb(where ratings are bought) and never think about complaining to the FCC. The radio in my n10 pulls 10+ mbps consistently, no LTE branded radio I've had would get better 5 mbps. It's clearly using hardware that, for example my One+ 6T, does not have. According to xml's found in vendor partition, and info from system/vendor props Qualcom engineers have it classified as LTE, T-MOBILE marketing calls it 5G. Labels aside, network performance suggests this device has upgraded hardware. If your not impressed, try disabling ipv6 in your APN, and /proc/net/ipv6 files. You need root/adb anymore to do this. I attest to dramatic differences in network performance as it bypasses some network throttling. I don't know about you, but I waste the 30 gig throttle limit the first two days on the new radio.
