Can't save screenshots - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought an HTC Desire 816 smartphone running KitKat 4.4.2. Before today, I was able to capture screenshots the same way I do so on my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet, by holding down the Power button and the Volume control button. But today, I did that and received a 2-line notification that said:
Couldn't capture scree...
Couldn't save screenshot. Storage ma...
I tried to turn the phone horizontally so that perhaps more of the message would show up, but although I have "auto-rotate" checked and it works on other screens, it doesn't do so here. I have no idea what the problem is nor how to fix it. I'd be most grateful for some help.

"Sorage ma..." seems as if you don't have enough storage on your internal SD to store that picture?? All I can think of if you were able to do it before. Try freeing up some internal memory.

Thanks for your quick response. According to the figures in Storage, I've got 2.20 GB still available, so lack of internal memory doesn't seem to be the problem. And I'm frustrated at not even being able to read the whole notification message.

Try deleting some stuff anyways

Well, I am surprised and happy to report that the screenshot storage problem seems to have cured itself :fingers-crossed: . I decided to try to make another screenshot and see what happened. I simply made a shot of my home screen, and it worked the way it was supposed to. The screenshot was stored under Pictures/Screenshots, and the puzzling "Couldn't capture scree..." notification disappeared. I'm still curious about what the entire two lines said, but for now, I'm going to move on to other things I don't understand about my new phone.

The notification said that its not possible to save screenshot and that its possible that you dont have enough memory(i have btw) and my screenshot didnt "cure" itself, idk what to do...

[Q] Missing hard disk space?

i dont know if you guys encountered this... but i recently moved a movie into my gnex to watch. after watching, i deleted it. after deleting, i tried to move a new movie in. but, it said i didnt have enough hard disk space. strangely enough, the new movie is smaller than the old movie i deleted, so i was a bit confused. i checked my disk space usage app and my system data ballooned to almost double. what happened? can anyone shed some light on this? thanks.

Are you rooted and backing up? If so maybe your space is being used on the backups.

I have Google Drive and CM12, but am not sure what you're referring to when you say drive scan, so elaborate and I'll go test it out real quick to see if I am as well and try to help you out.

thanks for your reply, i'll explain
start the google drive app, select the big red "+" icon bottom right of the screen, then select the scan icon...
Are you able to scan a document ? (in other words, are you able to take a picture of the document?)

It worked flawlessly for me! I have noticed sometimes that apps like snapchat report that the camera cannot be opened. Perhaps this is what occurs when you cannot scan? Try restarting your phone to reset the camera.

reset everything but the drive scan feature is still not working, it's been an issue in the past with cm11, it was fixed at some point, not sure what did it...
I am having the same issues too. It has not worked on many versions of cm 12 on my G3 and it also does not scan on cm 12.1. When you press the scan button all it does is activate a blue ring around the button but no scan. There is semi work around but not efficient. Once you press the scan button and the blue ring is present, move your phone up and down so the phone focuses and it will sometimes trigger the scan. I have reported it but unfortunately they currently are only taking reports of items that used to work but no longer do.
Crashes on Nexus 5
Just tried it on my Nexus 5 with CM12.1 and it completly crashes Drive. I rebooted and it didn't help. This really sucks because I use the Drive scan function multiple times a day for work. If anyone knows of a good work around, I'd love to hear about it.

Vanishing photos and screenshots

I've had my G4 for about 3 weeks now. I've found some strange behavior. My photos and screenshots keep disappearing from my device. I haven't done anything that might be a side effect of losing images in the past 2 weeks. No apps removed or installed. No changes in any settings. I've just been using it like I normally would, but my images keep vanishing. Anyone else experience this or should I go scream at someone at Verizon?
Side note. All my ringtones, alarm tones, notification sounds that I copied from my other device to this one have also gone missing. I don't know if the two are related or not.

Did you put them all on a microSD card? If so, the card might be defective.
I don't have an sd card installed. Never have.

u got a few options.
1. update the phone via ota update. if u want root then skip this
2. factory reset the phone to see if it dose it again. if it dose u looking at 2 thi gs. the os is glitchy. i had the same with jasmaine rom for g3 or the phones internal drive is bad so send it in for a replacement
I had this exact same problem. My issue ended up being that my micro sd card was shot and files were becoming corrupted.

Apps to SD card?

Does this phone not support this feature? For the life of me I can't get any of my games/apps to change storage from Internal to SD card. I tried with 3rd party apps and I tried via SETTINGS - General - Apps - Storage ... no option to save to External SD card
Is the MicroSD only good for saving your pics, videos and other media files? That really sucks if that's the case
Doesn't seem to be present. Inexcusable for any Android phone..I don't understand why even a flagship phone wouldn't have this other than less future proofing. Not sure I'll ever have a hundred gb of *apps* but still. You can turn on force apps to be installable on external storage in the dev options but that doesn't really open anything up. Whether it will auto extend installations to SD card when onboard storage is full like I've seen some phones do I don't know.
I found one article that claims the sd can be formatted as internal storage. Has anybody tried this?
Since I wasn't able to get a concrete answer online I called LG customer service and she told me the external storage is only good for pictures and "files" and apps can't be installed to the SD card. IDK, take that for what it's worth

I formatted the SD card two days ago when I first got the phone and the SD card but I don't remember any such option.
According to this article not all apps can be moved

Same. Why is this still a thing in these phones? It should be basic function. I'm close to swapping out this damn thing for something else because it's got so many dumb little flaws out of laziness. I didnt notice right away but there is no flashlight option in the swipedown menu, either! Nor can it be added from available options by pressing edit. Had to install a damn app for it! I suppose I'll look into rooting it

I'm sorry to hear about your flashlight! My tmo version has the swipedown flashlight. I wonder if you have the flashlight in the aod? Mine is in the always on display when you swipe right on the icons below the clock. Which carrier and country version do you have?
No swipedown flashlight is a huge mistake. If it makes you feel any better, I'm mad they don't have a wifi hotspot button in the swipedown anymore. I had to put a stupid widget on my home screen.
I agree, not sure why they'd neglect the transfer apps to sd function. My S8 did it with almost any app once the dev option was activated.
Ugh, locked bootloaders....

I actually have the flashlight in the pull down menu. At least one feature works...although I think I used it 3x in like 5 years. Give me apps 2 SD and silent shutter!
Even if you force it via developer option, not all apps will work properly. Maybe it has to do with how the apps interact with the processes on the device like location, etc?

I'm sorry. It was the only option I knew and I was only able to get one or two apps to work. Once the device restarted, the apps quit working.

It's North American, bought it unlocked. At least regarding WiFi hotspot, I can now tether vs my previous phone (a little Huawei elate/h1711z) which was cricket locked so it required me to pay (never). Same SIM card tho. The aod..I tried that. I had to turn on quick tools and it was there. It also put the flashlight into the swipe down display?? It's possible I didn't see it but previously I had two rows of four options on the full pull down, and a third row of three with a blank spot. Now it's three rows of four, with the flashlight in the previously blank spot. I feel like my phone is gaslighting me haha.

No need to apologize. I wasn't trying to be confrontational. This phone is lacking in a few basic ways which really sucks. I would complain to them but I feel like it would go no where.

Interesting differences, I'm glad it kicked in for you. Although I'm grateful for the tmo payment plan, I'm jealous that your unlocked phone has native, unmonitored hotspot. I had to use the widget, because tmo replaces the app with their own, so I can't tether nearly as much as I'd like. I wouldn't care that much, but we can only get dsl here, and my phone is actually faster.
