Buying a used Note 4 - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are thing I should check out before buying used to make sure I am not going to get a phone that could possibly become blacklisted?

Check the IEMI/ESN number and buy it from a reputable source/person. Swappa is a great place to have it verified. however if something was to happen down the line then you would have record and it can be verified.

check out AC. Several got tricked there and even the IEMI checked out and all.
These bastards are very very good nowadays.

Not to plug my own stuff, but I'm currently selling a note 4 with spigen neo hybrid case, mint condition on swappa. It still has the original screen protector / wrapper on it. I know I have a low post count, I've been a lurker for years. Let me know if you have any questions.

i may be selling my dev edition soon

[Q] Would you consider this a steal?

So I really wanted to get a gnex like REALLY BAD. So I picked up a used iPhone 4 on my local cl for 250 which happened to have a unlock able baseband, which I unlocked, then buying a few cases for it sold it on eBay for 415. Then in turn found this bad boy on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/23073326862...NX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_1958wt_982
The only thing is that it has a Knick on the bottom corner...and the desc. Says a few light scratches but I don't mind.
So.... I BOUGHT IT!
What do you guys think...

Sorry, been wanting it reall bad so I'm kinda excited, was not wondering if I should get it, I was wondering if y'all consider it a bargin
Good luck and let us know how it comes out.
I guess I am a little reluctant seeing as they say the phone works, but yet they do not have a picture of it actually on in that listing.
weird.
I am going to go out on a limb here and make a wager. $10 Internet Dollars the phone is either reported lost or stolen when he tries to activate it.
I bought my Galaxy Nexus from eBay for $600 about 2 weeks ago. It has a minor scratch mark at the bottom of the phone. Other than that, It's in a great condition. Your seller has a good rating, so there's a good chance that the phone you bought is legit. If your scratches are minor to you, then $533 is a good deal. When I was looking for a GN, the biddings usually end at around $625 - $650.

Got mine today, What System Information tool is best?

Hey there, received my Galaxy nexus today! been waiting for this beast for a while now!
I know this sounds completely nuts, but what's the Best app to gather system information/benchmark to double check the phone is genuine, What Should I be seeing in the About Phone section?
This is a UK GSM bought from amazon TTSims.
The only reason Im asking is because TTSims seems like a dodgy company, this phone being the most expensive thing they sell, and the box it came in was a little battered and you could open it without breaking the security seal, I emailed them asking if the phone was definitively brand new, not a used or refurbished model, and they guaranteed me it was new.
Just want to be anal about it, and make sure everything sweet, and enjoy it!
check imei (take out battery and check the code),also on the box and then check the internal imei code if those 3 are correct than you have a genuine gnex

Thanks for thanking me
They all match, thank you.
no problem

SkOrPn Samsung Jig & USB OTG

When I had a Vibrant, the jig helped me out of a few jams. Not too long ago, I got the Galaxy S2 as a replacement, so when I started playing around with it, I wanted to make sure I had one close by just in case. The jig is a tiny little thing and I'm prone to losing things, so it was long gone by the time I looked for it again. I decided I'd go cheap and ordered one from an eBay seller in China... that was a mistake. It was definitely cheap, but it didn't do a thing when I plugged it in. It wouldn't turn the phone on and it wouldn't put it into download mode. No sense in returning it either since the return shipping would cost more than I'd get back.
I still wanted to get a working jig and as luck would have it, I found a US based seller when I was looking around for a Kindle Fire factory cable. It turns out that he hand crafts these himself and XDA members give him overwhelmingly positive reviews for his products and service. I sent off a PM and he wrote me back in a flash, I put in my order and had it in 2 days! It's nicely built with a lanyard cord on it so I'm less likely to lose it and most importantly... it works!
I've attached some pictures here with the SkOrPn jig, the Chinese jig (the one without the cord that doesn't work), and my Galaxy S2 with the SkOrPn jig in download mode. It might cost a little more than the cheapest jig that you can find on eBay, but I'm happy to pay a little more for a quality product from a guy who takes pride in the things he makes. FWIW, I'm not affiliated in any way to this seller... I'm just a satisfied customer. He doesn't go out of his way to solicit sales of his products, so I just wanted to get the word out there for anybody that might be looking to purchase a jig for their phone.

Almost forgot... I've exchanged a number of PMs with him this past week and inquired about getting a USB OTG cable adapter. He said that while he doesn't currently make them, he'd certainly consider it if enough people showed some interest. Personally, I think a USB OTG cable is at the top of the list of must-have accessories for this phone, so let him know if you agree with me!
Does this one reset the counter on when booting into download mode?
I have ordered cheaper ones from china that do the job just fine.

The short answer is I do not know. I did flash an OS through ODIN at one point, but never looked at the download count to see if it had even incremented. That phone went back to T-Mobile for display issues before I got a working jig and I've only flashed a recovery with ODIN after that. There appears to be some mixed opinions on whether any jig will reset the counter, but I doubt that one jig would reset it while another would not. YMMV.

I'm glad that worked out for you. In my OP, I was just sharing my experience of ordering a cheap one from China that failed to do anything and then purchasing one from SkOrPn that worked as advertised. FWIW, I'm happy with my SkOrPn purchase even though I paid a bit more. Ultimately, I was glad to provide a small amount of support to a fellow XDA member and getting a quality product in return. To each his own.
I would love to support another member but you might want to have him update his ebay postings. As of now it does not list the jig working for the SG2. If he updates that then I would place an order.

I don't work for the guy, so it's not my job or place for me to tell him to update his listing, but I did send him a PM to have a look at your post. With that said, he states in his ebay listing...
The "SkOrPn JIG" is compatible with all known Galaxy S class phones, including the following:
So, that list is not an exclusive compatibility list... it's an "including, but not limited to" list. There's no difference in jig specs for the different models. If it works in those phones, it will work in the SGH-T989. I've also posted a picture in my OP with the jig in my phone.

Yes I understand it's not your job. I was only suggesting you let him know since you have started this thread in an effort to spread a kind word and support a member.
Also in the event I had ordered a jib from his ebay listing and it did not work I wouldn't have a leg to stand on regarding a refund because the model is not listed but I do understand what you are saying. In closing I'll kindly bow out of the thread since your reply seemed kinda aggressive.
Have a wonderful day.

Well, it wasn't meant to be an "aggressive" post, so I'm sorry if you took it that way. By no means was I yelling and there certainly wasn't any spittle flying at my monitor as I typed my reply.
I was just trying to make things clear and I also understand why you'd want some assurances. Personally, it didn't even occur to me to make sure this particular phone was in that list before I ordered. If you have reservations about it, I suggest you send him PM. I'm sure he'll vouch for his product and tell you that it will work in this phone. Good luck!
I just bought one.

It is already listed in the eBay ad for SGSII. I have sold over 1900 of these to xda members, teamwhiskey members, edt members and via word of mouth in multiple IRC channel's since 2010 and to date it has not failed on any samsung phone, the only failures have been phones with corrupted bootloaders a.k.a hard bricks. Also you said SG2 and I'm not aware if any SG2 devices so I can't list that device. All Samsung Galaxy S and SII series smartphones use the same resistance value for Download Mode as far as I know including the latest Google Nexus.
Thanks to the OP for getting the word out on my premium high quality Download Mode JIGs. There is NO OTHER JIG made as good as this one PERIOD

Oh Ok that t989 is just a T-Mobile part number but its still based off the original i9100 SII series. I will remove the i9100 from the listing when I get the chance. I will look to see if my compatibilty list is up to date. Thanks

No worries, it's all good.
Sent a thanks hit your way.
It has come to my attention that some devices do and some don't have the Counter Reset feature. It is up to the purchaser to know if their phone works or not with that feature as I only guarantee Download Mode. Apparently the i727 or T727 (lol not sure which it is now) does not have that feature yet it is based on the SGS2 internals.
What is even more disturbing is I can not find any information that suggests the T989 works with even download mode. I found this Q&A that seems to suggest that Download Mode works but Counter resetting does not. However again, lol, I am sure I have had customers with a TMO t989 purchase my JIG and they were happy as can be, so Im not sure if they ever tried the counter reset thingy. And my tester Alexea sold her SGS2 to get the Gnex.
Please if anyone can let me know for sure one way or the other I would appreciate it... I get emails all the time asking me about the SGS2 phones and the Custom Binary Counter reset feature and that feature is not present on my T959 test phone.
EDIT: kinfauns says his T989 definitely goes into Download Mode, but he does not know if it works with the counter reset feature of the device. Also, all my ebay listings have been updated to include the T989 and many other devices.
You should offer local pick up in Albuquerque and I would buy from you.

Needed a jig (you never know when you'll need it) and the lanyard is a pretty cool feature. Also, I didn't trust the ones from China. Just couldn't bring myself to order something that was such an unknown (no matter the low cost).
Just ordered a Skorpn. Thanks go out to the OP and SkOrPn!

The Chinese ones are not much different, in fact its the same exact connector and the only difference is the Chinese jigs are not tested to make sure the pins in question make contact, and so there is about a 15% failure rate, or even higher maybe. Someone like myself test each port before I even solder the resistor onto it, so I can weed out the bad apples and throw them away. They also do not test it on an actual phone to make sure it goes into download mode, and I do
Hence why they are so extremely cheap.
So is this jig for when the key combination doesn't work?

[Q] Is it new or refurbished?

Hi all,
Will be receiving a new sm-t705 tomorrow. Sadly, the seller isn't exactly known as a reputable procurer of tablet goodness... Refurbished sold as new might be a reality (not stolen, but possibly tinkered with). Besides scuffs and marks, what can I look for in making sure I'm dealing with a genuinely untouched item?

You might try AnTuTu Officer to start with.
......TiTiB (tweak it 'til it breaks)......
Galaxy Tab S | SMT-T700 | klimtwifi
Call Samsung, tell them the serial number and ask if it's been sent under repair or something.
Boot into download mode and see if knox is untripped and everything says official.

you can also download phone info from play store. there is one tab under personal showing usage history like charger connect counter. it should be depend on how many time has you charge your device. used device usually higher.
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=phone info&hl=en
Thanks,
Knox warranty void set to zero, 8 charge connects (mostly my own), 2 headset connects (not my own, probably testing). Unit looks good!
Cheers
Surely the biggest sign would be the void sticker on the box being broken.

Back with samsung

Hey folks. I just recently switched from oneplus to samsung. Haven't used a samsung device since the galaxy s5 with the bootloader unlock exploit.
Used LG for a while, then tried out the oneplus 8pro which is now at the repair center. I picked up what was advertised as an open box galaxy s20 + 5g (986u1) device.
After I powered it on, and set it up, I went to activate developer options and found that they were already on. Does that sound right that dev options would already be turned on if it was a new unused device?
Thanks.
Turn them off for your answer...

Samsung QC might have been playing with it and forgot to turn it off. Still it's disconcerting for a number of reasons.

Appreciate that. I found it interesting, and bit concerning that a brand new device would have developer settings activated. I purchased from an ebay seller. Based on their high approval scores, I felt pretty safe. I'll probably question them about it. Thankfully, everything on the phone seems to be working well. Peace.

You could reflash it to make sure there's no possibility of a rootkit. Probably just a goofball tech...

From what you've shared it sounds like you're in the clear. "Open Box" offerings always give me pause since sellers rarely post why the item was unsealed. At times sellers declare they only opened the item for testing but unless the offer is at a considerable discount below a comparable new, sealed unit and listed by a reputable seller with a fair return policy I'd avoid it.
I recently purchased a Dell XPS laptop on ebay from a dealer specializing in refurbished units. The listing reflected the item as "new". Before confirming the order I reached out and asked is the laptop factually new, has it ever been used? The seller replied "It's new to us"? WTF does that mean? lol!
