[Q] Unable to search Global Address list in Phone app. - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Global Address list(Exchange server contact list) works fine( being able to search contacts from phone app) if I use a exchange active sync account on the stock email app. But I use Nine - Exchange ActiveSync app for my active sync needs ( this app lets me encrypt only the app part instead of the whole phone as enforced by exchange admin).
This app has GAL sharing with other apps enabled and lets me search Global address list from the phone app when used on non-sense ROMs and Phones like Galaxy S4, Nexus 5 and OnePlus One. The only phone I couldn't use this feature is HTC One M8 with sense rom. I could use the GAL sharing feature( where this app enabled the GAL search from within the Phone Dialer app) with GPE rom.
Any suggestions? I already am in contact with Nine Folders makers of this app with lot of communication and no resolution. Thanks.

[Q] create contacts only in one directory

Hi,
I have my contacts stored in Exchange.
I have - obviously - also a MOTOBLUR-Account that Motorola forced on me upon activation that I do not intend to use and a google-Account for the market.
Now, when I create a new contact on my defy, I can not choose wether to create it in MOTOBLUR or Exchange or have it in my google account, it is automatically created in all three and all three sets of data are joined together.
So as I only want to have the Exchange contact, everytime I create a new contact, I do have to un-join the contacts and delete the MOTOBLUR and google contact manually.
That is in my eyes a mayor design flaw.
I do NOT want my phone to store my data in some suspicious cloud service that has been forced upon me in the first place.
Is there a way to create a contact specifically in the Exchange and NOT in Motoblur / google?
Or would I have to use a different contact manager app? Any recommendations then?
That also allows me to query the global adress book of Exchange (which the standard app apparently can't).
I'd be grateful for any tipps and help,
southy
I've been bothered by this issue too. It would be the most intuitive to be able to select in which account(s) a contact should be created at the time it is created.
But there is a different way to accomplish similar, but it's a global setting. In Settings->Accounts you can specify which items (contacts, calendar, e-mail) are to be synched with a given account. Well, for all BUT the MotoBlur account ;(, and because it's a global setting I have not yet examined the full ramification of it, and it's a kludge; what if one would like to synch some of the contacts with all accounts, but others with just one or two, but it's at least something.
BTW, I have not tried other paid (some are quite expensive) Exchange clients, but the free ones don't come even close to the Email app that's included on the Defy. If you find one that may be worth spending money, let us know.
Hi,
thanks for your feedback, that way I can at least disable the google-Account completely (which is only configured for the market access).
That leaves motoblur.
Regarding the Exchange clients: Yes, I would actually be willing to pay for one, but have yet not found one that really satisfies me.
I have tested Touchdown (from nitrodesk) for some time now but didn't buy it:
In general it was pretty good, there's just one problem: There is no way to deactivate notifications (new mail) at nights. As I use my mobile as alarm clock, I can't turn the sound completely off and so it tends to wake me up with new mail at night.
That's really annoying.
Actually it's pretty strange that they didn't implement something that basic - as there are very unusual other notification settings. The whole configuration in fact is somewhat overwhelming because sometimes you can configure the same thing on more than one location.

Maybe because I'm on the T-Mo USA 2.2.1 ROM, but in my Email app, when I'm entering letters into the <To> field, all matching names from the Exchange Address Book are being dynamically displayed. Not the same as browsing all of the Address Book and choosing one address, but good enough for me (I work in a relatively small organization). Doesn't yours do that?
Hi,
thanks for your reply,
I don't use the standard mail client any more. I stopped using it rather soon after I bought the Defy.
I just tried to figure out why, but sorry, I can't remember. But I remember that it was a rather important reason, because I started trying TouchDown as first alternative client and TD is such a pain to configure that it took me days.
I must have had a damn good reason to stick to trying.
But you are aware that there is a difference between personal contacts I store in exchange (which are synced with the mobile) and the global adress book of Exchange?
The global adress book is the complete dictionary of a company, AFAIK normally connected to the Active Directory-Accounts of the employees, which is centrally managed.
You can not sync it to your device, you can just search in it and pick a result.
Could it be you mixed those up?
Thanks anyway,
southy

You are welcome, and no, no mixup. In the <To> field, if I press the <search> icon, it gives me the list of my contacts (stored locally on the phone); but, if I start typing into the field, the Global Address Book (on the Exchange Server) is dynamically searched and displayed as I type.
Hi Mars,
thanks for clearing this up and sorry I suspected you to mix things up.
Good to hear the stock app can use the global adress book - I never tried that before switching to another client.
However I guess I might completely revert back to the original app soon in order to get rid of all alternative clients - I tried TD and wasn't convinced, now I got Moxier installed and suddenly my contacts don't sync anymore - no idea why.
It seems I should just stick with the preinstalled stuff even though it's not good.
Or perhaps get a blackberry.
ups. Did I really say that?
Touchdown is brilliant - been using it for long time. the BEST!
With reference to the original quesition; when you create a contact you CAN chose which cateogry it should go in. In contacts, chose settings and uncheck the cateogry you do NOT want the account to go in to. This way you can uncheck google (or multiple google accounts). When you create a contact it will not be assinged to a google category and therefore not sync with online google contacts
Of course touchdown keeps its contacts seprate but the above is very usful for your own personal contacts. I have all sorts of sync going on and am very confident that ONLY the info i want on the internet goes to the internet.
Motoblur: I dont use it - never have. You canbypass this at setup time.
Ref sync: worth playing with settings > accounts and also contacts > settings - very useful
Hi jeanluc,
that's interesting - I just realised i had never actually created a contact out of TD, but always out of the stock "contact search" app.
Sorry for judging too quick.
However, after 20 mins of using TD contacts, I can't say I like it.
but whatever. I just tried generating a new contact and it worked and got synced to exchange.
But when I open the stock contact app, curiously enough, the contact has not been present for ~30minutes - apaprently TD maintains a second adressbook apart from the builtin which has only been synced later.
Well I seem to have lost the overview what syncs to what here...
But back to the point, you are completely correct, when I generate the contact out of TD, it only is being created in Exchange and nowhere else.
However - and please, please forgive such ignorance - I have just tried that and find it so very un-intuitive that I will keep on searching for a decent contact app.
This is my comments after only 15 minutes of trying TD contact:
Problems with creating a contact:
- the adress fields are not labeled. where goes the street, where the city, where the postcode?
Problems in TD contact in general:
- seperate contact database apart from the built in
- no pictures of contacts are being displayed
- search function not as quick reachable as stock apps
But there's also a plus:
- searching in global adress book (Exchange) works and even returns a phone number, not only the e-mail.
one last thing:
Ref sync: worth playing with settings > accounts and also contacts > settings - very useful

"contacts -> settings": I am searching for such a settings dialogue the whole time - but I can't find it (to check how and when the stock android contacts sync to my exchange - as this is apparently a seperate thing apart from TD sync).
But I can't find those settings. I only find "settings -> accounts" but there I can only define the user credentials, not the sync process (frequency, manual trigger,...)
Can you point me to the correct place, please?
Thanks!
Settings for sync of built-in adressbook with Exchange:
found it!
Overview:
If you just want to sync contacs (& calendar) because maybe you do not use the stock mail client for Exchange, you need to:
1. settings -> accounts -> <your corporate account> -> uncheck "e-mail"
2. messages -> message settings -> e-mail -> mail delivery
Yes, it sounds strange to configure the adressbook sync in "messages" as I did deactivate that account for e-mail before, but apparently that's the way it is...
Maybe you should flash Orange of Finnish rom, that doesn't have blur registration at all?

Hi Southy
I dont actually create contats in TD as these are work contats and am happy for them to be pushed down from outlook/exchange which Im using constantly
I love TD - it does everytihng that I need
I also Android contacts for personal information and manage to keep that isolated from the internet.
I sync my personal calendar wth internet (google) as it doenst contain anything confidential but i suppose if you wanted to you could stop that at the calendar level but still allow another google calendar to sync - that way you view both google calendars on the phone but only one syncs (for this you need to enable calendar sync in settings>accounts but disable calendar sync for the specific calendar in the calendar application
Note: Worth rememering that a lot of sync software (missing sync, TD etc) will create an account on the phone which is accessible via settings>accounts. Always worth checkign whats created here and what functionality it provides as far as modifying sync is concertned
NOTE1: Are allyour questions answered now or are you still waiting for something?

Exchange

Hi,
I'm planning on buying Galaxy Nexus but since I've never had pure Google phone I don't know does it have a separate email app (except Gmail) with Exchange support. Anyone care to enlighten me?
Thanks

The email app supports Exchange ActiveSync. Exchange administrators can also do things like remote wipe of android phones.

Most versions of android don't support HTML email on exchange 2003. Touchdown and iOS do so it is possible. Lets hope ICS supports HTML exchange email on that server.
I use Enhanced Email. It lets me bypass my works security requirements. No PIN and no remote wipe.

Does this definitely work on Glaxy Nexus? I thought it was built for older Android versions?
It doesn't work yet on ICS, but the developer has it working already, he just hasn't released the update yet. I downloaded the trial version, but it force closes.
I found the link for the trial and the change login his support forum (link below)

Calendar does sync in tablet fwiw
The standard email client on the Galaxy Nexus works just fine with exchange, including calendar sync and html mail.

Clarification: Enhanced Email does not bypass all security, just the pin lock requirement.
My corporate IT is not granted Admin Remote Wipe and other lock and restrictions overrides when using EE
Am I just not seeing it? Can you extend the time before your screen locks? Not the display timeout. I have to input my pin every single time I unlock my phone.

ICS is the first version of Android to be fully Exchange ActiveSync compliant. All this means it is supports every security and remote management features of Exchange 2010. (EAS 14.1)
Does anyone get notification for native exchange email on ICS?
I've setup folders under my Inbox, and I don't get any notification when email arrives. I've setup individual sync option on multiple folders.
This was working fine on My N1 running CM7 which is Gingerbread
The stock email app works fine with exchange for me
Camera disabled? False policy info?
Our Exchange Admin can't figure this one out.. He does NOT have any policy to disable camera's yet at initial account creation to our ActiveSync server it tries to push a security profile to turn off camera's and set a bunch of other stuff that our Admin swears is not being set. He even gave me remote control of our Exchange server to verify I was on a default policy and the default policy had none of these restrictions.
REALLY odd - as Touchdown is just seeing the policy he has set and not trying to set other items. Having to use Touchdown now - though now the Touchdown HD beta supports ICS now. Finding their push to be less battery intensive than the built in app when I used it for 2 days (with my camera disabled to actually get to test it)

Go to settings security, automatically lock and change to whatever max is allowed by the exchange security settings...
Sorry for a stupid question.
Is it possible to install active sync on my work notebook (WinXP) and sync it with my GNex via cable? Similar to what I was used with my Window phone 2 years ago.
I've been using touchdown for some while and it synced via our outlook web access, which has been disabled now. So I am trying to figure out a way to sync calender and tasks again. I don't care about Emails.
we are not allowed to install google sync (or w/e it is called). they even took our admin rights on our working notebooks. MS Active Sync, however, is a approved software which could be installed by our IT.
Any ideas/thoughts? thx
Stock mail.app does not support "search" option for exchange mails...

[Q] How to get access to corporate directory on GN

Hi,
I just switched from Desire to Galaxy Nexus and I'm desesperatly looking for the way to get access to the corporate directory (I have configured the Exchange account and sync okay emails, contacts and calendar).
Anyone found the way to get this?
Thank you.

I'd love to know where to find the settings for my work email address. They make us use outlook web access.
I use Corporate Addressbook. Haven't tested if it works on the Galaxy Nexus though.
I use touchdown exchange. So much better than any built in exchange. Worth the money plus my company's security requirements are only applied to the app. I don't need a password just to get into the phone. Global address book works great.

I use Enhanced Email. It automatically detects my Exchange server settings when i add my email account. That's where i got the correct settings for Corporate Addressbook.
I was after the access to the full set of info from the directory (i.e. phone numbers etc... on top of email address). I understand that this could be simply not part of "naked" android?
It then must have been from the htc contacts app on the desire, then? Not always easy to tell...
Now, what would be great would be something that integrates in the ics people app. Any hope?
I did use touchdown for a while but felt better with HTC email client...
Thanks for all the quick answers.
Hi,
I just found out that People app is now looking from corp directory. Anyone else is seeing that?
This is very good.

Microsoft Exchange Guru pls

Hi all -
Just got the E4GT , moved from an EVO 3D.
I'm concerned because in my exchange options I don't have the ability or option to have it sync all my folders AND subfolders as well as provide a notification? like I did on the EVO 3D.
Is there another version I can flash so I don't have to sync each folder to get new mail?
Really hope there is a way as I'd be forced to take this back because I need to get my email in real time.
No one uses exchange on this device? Or everyone is too saddened by the fact that you can't sync subfolders to reply?
To my knowledge with the base e-mail application you can't sync sub folders automatically (only the inbox). I have been able to do it though with "Enhanced E-Mail", you should be able to with "Touchdown" (got Enhanced E-mail for free on one of the amazon daily free apps, so I haven't tried Touchdown), and I have also read K-9 Mail can do it (it's a free app), but I have not been able to successful connect it to Exchange yet, only IMAP and POP3. They can all be found on the app market.
If you decide to buy Enhanced E-mail here is how you can setup folders to auto sync
1. open app
2. click the menu button
3. click Folders
4. click and hold on the folder you want to auto sync
5. click Toggle sync
6. wait as the folder is synced, the app will run slow so you can only do 1 folder at a time. To my knowledge there is no way to toggle sync on all the folders, so you have to go through each one.

The reason you could do this on the EVO 3D, and that you cannot do this on the E4GT is that the EVO 3D actually setup an exchange account, very similar to how touchdown interfaces with your exchange server, and the default mail app for the E4GT only uses ActiveSync.
ActiveSync only refreshes your inbox, and you will need to manually check each subfolder for new messages. To resolve your issue, you will need to use a mail client other than the stock app.
Thanks everyone for the replies. Anyway of porting the apk from the EVO 3D to the E4GT?
just buy Touchdown, and your problem is solved..
Touchdown has a 30 day trial - give it a shot and see if you like it (because it's bloody expensive for an app... although inexpensive for what it's actually giving you). It's been on sale infrequently before so I'm planning on using the trial until it goes on sale - I reflash my phone enough anyway, plus it doesn't really work 100% for my exchange server for some wonky reason.
I have to use http exchange on my desktop outlook and the mobile outlooks never have the option for that and touchdown is the only one that at least synchs mail for me.
I also have Enhanced EMail from the FAOTD but since it only wants to do activesync that doesn't work for me. So I can't really say if it's better/worse.
If the EVO was actually creating an account (like in the settings -> accounts) for the e-mail I'd think that'd be more than an APK unfortunately so you'll be better off looking for a 3rd party solution.
sign up for the Amazon App Store; they have had touchdown on sale twice in the last few months...
I ended up getting Enhanced Email and it solves all the issues with syncing/notifications for subfolders.
Doesn't make sense for Android NOT to do this by default. Hope ICS fixes this terrible oversight.

Exchange Server on stock email app?

I'm coming from a 4.4 Nexus 5, where if I add an account to the standard email app I get the choice between POP3/IMAP/Exchange.
On the 5x, the stock app doens't have Exchange as an option?
I like keeping gmail (personal) with the gmail app, and the stock email app for my business mail.
How do I enable exchange?
There is no separate Email app for Exchange; they all get rolled into the Gmail app.
To setup an Exchange account, go to Settings->Accounts->Exchange.
You could also separate them using a 3rd-party app such as Touchdown.
Found a solution - install the exchange service from my N5 on 4.4, and this allows the stock email client to then use Exchange Server as an account type.
does your contacts app allow you to search the exchange database? (gap) no matter what current I use the exchange server doesn't auto fill email addresses and contacts are not listed
Check out the Nine app - it blows the stock app and Gmail away IMO

I've used Nine, Mailwise (beta tester) and Boxer (beta tester) all great email apps for exchange, unfortunately, for me, they don't allow the contacts to search the exchange directory as it does on my other devices.

How did you do this? I tried to find the apk to move to the n5x but only saw exchange2.apk in system apps.
The apk I copied from 4.4 was
