Samsung Social Hub - Hotmail Push?

The Samsung Social Hub app claims it allows for pushing for email. I have it install but can't really verify if its pushing or polling for Hotmail.

I don't think Hotmail supports push anyway, but I may be wrong

I have Samset installed now, and the market no longer shows the Samsung social hub. But from what I saw, emails I got were very instantaneous.

Samsung social hub comes bundled inside Samsung Apps, not Android Market
the hotmail / yahoo "push" is more like polling, i don't think it's a real push like in the Blackberries
the only true push is the Gmail emails using the Gmail app

Hotmail Push
Hotmail supports push email through the Exchange protocol.
To add a Hotmail (push) account to android devices is to add a Corporate account under Accounts/Syn under Seetings.
Details are as below:
email: [email protected] or [email protected] or whatever your hotmail email id is.
password: your password
Click Next
Domain\Username: [email protected] or [email protected] or whatever your hotmail email id is. (Nothing to fill up for Domain so just give your email id).
password: your password (gets auto filled in from the previous page)
Exchange Server: m.hotmail.com
Check (tick)Use Secure Connection
Click Next
Under Account Settings
Poll email interval: Choose Push (Automatic)
and complete the setup and Hotmail Push is ready.
Microsoft has not released this officially but works
Just bought Samsung i9000 and here right away on XDA.

Same. Here is an email I just got from Microsoft.
To get Hotmail on-the-go, you recently tried to set up a service called ActiveSync from your mobile device.
We are really glad that you're interested, but we had so many sign-ups that we had to temporarily stop accepting new ones.

My workaround is a forward to my gmail account. Easy to set up in the hotmail option

That would mean I need to delete email from two seperate locations. I use the MSN Messenger mail notifier when I'm on the computer to know if I have mail or not.

Guys.. Can you give it a try again.. Guess the roll out is happening.. One of my friend got it working on with android 2.1 he has the same setup as mine. (Stock DDJG4 rooted).
Initially it did not work for him, when I tried after the feedback of it not working. But today when I tried it again. It works.

Exchange support for Hotmail did not work for me a a week ago (I even got the email saying the service was not available for Android phones), but now it does.
It's really heavy on the battery though, especially if you compare it to Gmail push. I might have to go back to normal sync.

wow, I think this might be why I suddenly had battery drain. One time it practically drained 100% overnight! What kind of push is this? Doesn't push use a standard protocol, meaning there are no optimizations to be done, it just is what it is..

Just set it up my hotmail.co.uk on with a 'corporate' account. Spot on, sent and received no probs. Sync'd my folders too.

Gonna give it another try this night. If it remains above 90% then it means it's not draining my battery. If not, then back to automatic sync.

What is the difference between the social hub email and the regular email app on the galaxy?

Built in exchange support or not?

Just saw a disturbing post and I wanted to get some confirmation from those who own the phone.
I saw in a comment on a review of this phone that it doesn't support Ms exchange for email or calendar. I absolutely news push email and calendar for my business. Can anyone confirm if this is true or not?

I am using MS exchange on my SGSII with no issues. Not sure where you read that, but it is totally false. Push email, calendar and contacts all work with exchange.

I got MS Exchange issue; talked with Tmo tec for more than 2 hrs, still had no solution. in the end, rtn phone back to store.

No issues on my side. This phone activates exchange the same way my last 4 android phones have. No issues at all as far as the phone side goes. Also if you have root you can replace the TW email.apk with the stock Gingerbread one. I did this just because I like the aosp email better.

The builtin mail app works fine with my exchange server. I use Touchdown because I like the interface better though...
One thing that you might not be aware of if you're using Exchange 2010 for your mail server is that there is a limit to the number of devices you can connect to an account. You can manage connected devices in OWA so login there and delete any old devices...
One other thing that my exchange server does when I connect the phone to it is to push security settings to my phone. A popup appears on the phone that I have to accept in order to sync mail. If I don't, I don't get anything...
Finally, you could try touchdown and if it works but the built in mail app doesn't then I'd recommend the purchase. It's still better than the improved built in version IMHO

Robin. Another quick question. Can you send and accept calendar invites for exchange from the native calendar apply? That's another big one for me. I am aware of touchdown and even own the license but I am a minimalist and if I don't have to install an app that's services are already present I wont. Thank you in advance.

There was never support for IMAP push and still isn't. Seems Google isn't particularly interested in changing that.

gmail is for personal use, I have other emails with PUSH support but
my phone doesn't support it.

please understand what we are talking about.

Set your other account to forward to a gmail account. You can even set the Gmail account to reply from the "professional" account. Or set up a Google Apps account with your business domain.

i love Touchdown exchange for my work email. Probably the best part is the pin required by my company's security isnt applied to the whole device, I only have to enter the PIN to open the email application. Id hate to have to enter PIN just to send a text message.

I'm disappointed that Gmail doesn't have push using the email app. There's push support on the iPhone, so why not on a native Google device?

The AOSP email app has support for exchange.

I just got my Galaxy Nexus and was hoping that this would be something that ICS would resolve. My single biggest gripe with Android is lack of native PUSH email notifications for non-Gmail email accounts.
I shouldn't have to forward emails to my gmail account for this to work. That is not a solution, but merely a half-crack workaround.
I don't have the ability to use Google apps with my work email account.
I don't have an Exchange account, just an IMAP account. So it sounds like my only options are to get one of the shotty email clients in the app market or move to iPhone that supports this natively. I love android, this is just one of those things that's a priority for me. :-/

You can't just add "push", the email service needs to support it.
"Push" email is just a descriptor, it's not an actual implementation of anything specific.

The iPhone doesn't support PUSH (aka IMAP IDLE) for IMAP email servers. I'm positive it doesn't do it for the native email (my wife has an iPhone), can't say if there's an email client app that supports, but I want to say no since iOS will kill any background running app like that.
Get K9 mail for Android, I used it a lot a couple years ago via IMAP (before switching to Gmail full time), worked great for instant notifications.

the email must support push email (IMAP idle) but the client must support that too.
my own server supports IMAP idle, I use the push service on every phone but it does not work on my galaxy nexus.
I must admit that android is only a soap bubble, you can't say that android is an advanced OS when it lacks the basic feature of feature phones.

I could've sworn I had a stock Email app on my Droid Charge at one point that was push. It was awesome. There has to be a stock or AOSP Email app apk out there somewhere that we can use.

Galaxy Sll email app has it...maybe someone can port it.

Microsoft Outlook E-mail Question...

I want my work email on my GN but don't want the number or alphabetical lock for a lock screen that the email requires. Now the question is since its android, is there some way of by passing this to maybe another lock screen preference.

Touchdown exchange only requires the pin to get in the email app. Does not lock the whole device. My favorite part.

Check out Enhanced Email (available in Market). Great email program, and let's you disable Exchange account policies. Many other great features.

I have my corporate email setup and I don't use the number crap. I think at first it made me use it but I disabled it or deleted the account and set it back up a second time.
Ive crackflashed a few times and never been prompted about the lockscreen again.

The requirement of using either pin or tracing is pushed on your device by the profile configured in ActiveSync on the Microsoft Exchange server. It is entirely possible some people will have this requirement and some don't.
You could always talk to your Exchange administrator and see if it could be changed.

[Q] Cannot set up Exchange mail sync

I just got my Gnex. It updated to Android 4.04. I try to set up email with my office Exchange account and it fails. The error message says "you don't have permission to sync with this server"
I'm using the same email exchange log in infromation as I have used on my Xoom. No problems there.
I tired using Touchdown and had the same results.
Any ideas?

sounds like the server itself is rejecting your login.
maybe the company only allows one mobile device with your credentials?
i would remove exchange from your xoom and then try. if it allows you to connect then, there's your answer

I think that is unlikely.. I had a moto dinc syncing fine and upgraded to the nexus.
The dinc and zoom synced fine in parallel.. The dinc is now turned off.

There's an option to trigger the security certificates or something - forgot the exact wording, but when I tapped that, I could get into my office Exchange server.
Of course, I like to keep my office things in the office so I quickly disabled the email app.

Ya, there are two dialog boxes:
User secure connection (SSL)
Accept all SSL certificates
My Xoom account shows the first checked. The second not.
Using the same configuration - I get the message that I don't have permission to sync with the server.
When I check the Accept all SSL certificates - I get the same message.

When I go through the setup on my Xoom after completing the inputs - I get the following message:
'This server requires that you allow it to remotely control some security features of your Android device. Do you want to finish setting up this account?'
Is there something about ICS 4.04 running on the Gnex that would pose a problem with this security handshake?
I'm running an ICS 4.04 Cyanogen Mod nightly on my Xoom. I had Gingerbread on my Dinc before I switched to the Gnex. The email exchange sync worked fine on the Dinc.

When I have time I may root and load a custom ROM on it and see if that makes a difference. Although I'd prefer to stay stock for a while - just to get used to the thing.
If anyone has insight into the security issues - I'd appreciate hearing it. A quick Google search of issues relating to Exchange sync shows that there are issues with the Gnex and Exchange handshake. Some people have had to encrypt their phone to get it to work?!?
Certainly this must have been worked out by someone...

That's a common message to see depending on the security policies your Exchange Server administrator has established. Among other things, for example, your company probably requires the ability to do a remote wipe of your handset's email should the account be compromised, your device be reported stolen, or you quit or be fired.
Perfectly normal. My company does this as well, and it works beautifully with my Galaxy Nexus...no device encryption needed, and I'm running ICS 4.0.4 IMM76K - one Exchange Server account via the stock email client, and one GMail account via that stock app. All works beautifully.
