Microsoft Exchange Guru pls - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi all -
Just got the E4GT , moved from an EVO 3D.
I'm concerned because in my exchange options I don't have the ability or option to have it sync all my folders AND subfolders as well as provide a notification? like I did on the EVO 3D.
Is there another version I can flash so I don't have to sync each folder to get new mail?
Really hope there is a way as I'd be forced to take this back because I need to get my email in real time.

No one uses exchange on this device? Or everyone is too saddened by the fact that you can't sync subfolders to reply?

To my knowledge with the base e-mail application you can't sync sub folders automatically (only the inbox). I have been able to do it though with "Enhanced E-Mail", you should be able to with "Touchdown" (got Enhanced E-mail for free on one of the amazon daily free apps, so I haven't tried Touchdown), and I have also read K-9 Mail can do it (it's a free app), but I have not been able to successful connect it to Exchange yet, only IMAP and POP3. They can all be found on the app market.
If you decide to buy Enhanced E-mail here is how you can setup folders to auto sync
1. open app
2. click the menu button
3. click Folders
4. click and hold on the folder you want to auto sync
5. click Toggle sync
6. wait as the folder is synced, the app will run slow so you can only do 1 folder at a time. To my knowledge there is no way to toggle sync on all the folders, so you have to go through each one.

The reason you could do this on the EVO 3D, and that you cannot do this on the E4GT is that the EVO 3D actually setup an exchange account, very similar to how touchdown interfaces with your exchange server, and the default mail app for the E4GT only uses ActiveSync.
ActiveSync only refreshes your inbox, and you will need to manually check each subfolder for new messages. To resolve your issue, you will need to use a mail client other than the stock app.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Anyway of porting the apk from the EVO 3D to the E4GT?

just buy Touchdown, and your problem is solved..

Touchdown has a 30 day trial - give it a shot and see if you like it (because it's bloody expensive for an app... although inexpensive for what it's actually giving you). It's been on sale infrequently before so I'm planning on using the trial until it goes on sale - I reflash my phone enough anyway, plus it doesn't really work 100% for my exchange server for some wonky reason.
I have to use http exchange on my desktop outlook and the mobile outlooks never have the option for that and touchdown is the only one that at least synchs mail for me.
I also have Enhanced EMail from the FAOTD but since it only wants to do activesync that doesn't work for me. So I can't really say if it's better/worse.
If the EVO was actually creating an account (like in the settings -> accounts) for the e-mail I'd think that'd be more than an APK unfortunately so you'll be better off looking for a 3rd party solution.

sign up for the Amazon App Store; they have had touchdown on sale twice in the last few months...

I ended up getting Enhanced Email and it solves all the issues with syncing/notifications for subfolders.
Doesn't make sense for Android NOT to do this by default. Hope ICS fixes this terrible oversight.

[Q] Froyo (official) and multiple exchange accounts

I just installed the official Froyo build. Unfortunately, it looks like multiple exchange accounts is not supported.
Do any of the other 2.2 roms (e.g., Sky Raidar) support multiple exchange accounts (preferably with sense - I actually like it)?
Also, assuming another ROM will work, what is the best way to flash the ROM without losing my settings. The official build updated without the need to wipe (only issue I found so far is I had to uninstall/reinstall swype). If I install another ROM, does titanium backup do a good job of restoring the phone's app and settings? (don't want to have to redo all my screens, etc).
Thanks
I've never known any device to sync multiple exchange accounts. But this is my first Android device coming from iPhone.
Unfortunately, the HTC Mail application in general does not allow for multiple exchange accounts...
Is there a way to get the non HTC stock mail application installed (or do any of the vanilla roms support multiple accounts)? Unfortunately, I assumed Froyo would enable multiple accounts (I am already using touchdown and the native support to get 2 accounts, but I have a few additional ones).
Thanks
You know what they say when you assume. My only recommendation would be using Touchdown which you already do. Depending on what you use your exchange accounts for (work or personal) you can setup some forwarding rules to have everything come into one spot. Only thing with that is it is against businesses policy (or it should be) to forward company property like that.
The stock Email.apk in /system/app from CM6 works fine on the incredible. The ONLY PROBLEM is that when you read an email from somewhere else, the notification is not removed from the status bar, and it stays there until you re-open the application. My only gripe.
Interesting. I am awaiting the OTA and use the stock 2.1 for accessing an exchange server. Hotmail is setup as a separate account. I heard Hotmail will go live this week with Activesync support, so will this mean I will have to choose which one I want, giving up one, beig hotmail obviously.
Thanks.
No just setup your Hotmail as POP or IMAP, whichever it supports.

How would I go about installing this? Is it as simple as installing other apps? I used the CM6 ROM for a couple weeks and loved it but random reboots forced me back to my previous ROM.

Hotmail doesn't support IMAP which is a large part of why people want to set it up as an activesync account. Pop just sucks...
It's sad that the HTC client doesn't support more than one activesync account, the Pre they gave me at works handles up to 8 I believe (have 3 currently setup on it).
That is not to say that the Pre's activesync implementation is better, I wish it would let me choose which parts of the account I want to sync rather than forcing an all or nothing approach, but it is nice to have real push email on all my accounts with it.
The Pre can sync tasks as well... I wish HTC would implement this.
Has anyone figured out an acceptable work-around that doesn't involve non-working notifications or paying for touchdown?

Improved Email App
I installed Improved Email from the marketplace. It supports multiple Exchange accounts and syncs email, calendar and contacts.

[Q] Exchange 2010 and Droid Incredible Push

Hello,
I have a question I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere. We are upgrading from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 at my work, while testing Exchange 2010 I found out that activesync (push) email works great on iPhones and iPads, but not on my Droid Incredible . I can create the account just fine and manually refresh to see my mail, but if I have my exchange activesync email set to "as items arrive" and send myself a test email, I don't get it until I open up the email app and it refreshes.
I'm using the default htc email app, I have tried deleting and recreating my account several times. If I have the setting set to any thing else, like sync every 5 minutes it works just fine, but for some reason if it's set to as items arrive I won't get the email until I manually look at the email app. I can't deploy exchange 2010 with this going on as we have many other android users in the company.
Please help!
The Android native email application needs improvement no doubt. I use TouchDown as we have Exchange 2007 and are enforcing security policies. Those don't work too well with the native application.
Push works great, but it's a one time fee of $20, but in my opinion worth it.

Thanks RMarkwald! I downloaded and tried out TouchDown and it works great for Exchange 2010. At least I have a solution if users start complaining about push no longer working after we upgrade.
Hopefully htc will get an update out for this at some point because a simple thing like activesync should work on the stock email app.
Hey no problem! I think that the issue is more of an Android issue, not really HTC, cause it happens across the board. I've had nothing but issues before I purchased TD, and that was before we enabled PIN/security features. $20 is a lot, but my company purchased it for me, and I can use it on my Xoom without having to pay another $20, so IMO it's worth it.
Their support is great too, from the times I've contacted them with questions. I really like you can sync Tasks and manage your Out of Office too.

Virtuous exchange email

I was wondering if anyone was having problems syncing to their exchange servers that were running virtuous rom. I liked the ability to sync my calendar and contacts from my work computer to my phone and now can't seem to get it to work.
I can get k9 to work for my email at least, but it doesn't give the option for syncing calendar and contacts the way the stock app does. I'd also rather not drop $20 on touchdown since it gives me the same functionality that the stock mail app gave me.
Is there actually another option to sync my calendar and contacts from my exchange server that I'm missing in k9?
Sent from a tin can and a piece of string.
Was virtuous the first rom you flashed? Your exchange settings may prevent you from syncing with a new phone until you remove the old one. Every time you flash a new rom, you get a new digital signature, or a "new phone" as far as exchange is concerned. I had this problem and went through three different roms before I figured out it wasn't the roms fault.
Sent from my Incredible Sensation using XDA App
yeah, it's the first rom I've flashed on my Dinc2. I previously had my exchange set up on this phone and before this, it was setup on my fascinate. how would I go about removing the previous phone from my exchange server? Would I have to speak with tech at my company to get it fixed?
Exchange Mobile Device Management
If your Exchange admin has opened it up, you can access your phone info under your OWA (Outlook Web Access) portal.
Log in as normal, then click on the Options button in the top right, then on Mobile Devices on the left column. You should be able to see all the previous phones in there and can remove them if needed.

Alternative Exchange Email Client

Hey guys,
I was "smart" enough to remove the default email application on my S2, I am unsure if it was a Samsung custom app or just a standard Android one.
Anyway I got the default android one installed and I don't like it.
I am using an exchange server with push etc setup but still it keep using so much battery and keeps putting the phone in wake lock mode. So I want to replace it. If Samsung has their own app then I will install it but I need the file to install as I didn't back it up.
Thanks for your help guys!

I would recommend TouchDown , its pricey and ugly to look at but works the best and battery saving. You can setup customized peak and of peak hrs.
they have a trial version you can try

If you managed to remove it then you should be able to put it back ;-)
I've tried a few and here are some active sync specific comments:
Touchdown - good but syncs only one account so useless to me
Enhanced Email - syncs many accounts but kills my battery over night (50% or so) and it has no decent widget for emails (that shows subject etc)
Moxier Mail - also syncs just one activesync account
There was one other I tried (not sure which one) but also just one account
it has to be said: What is wrong with these developers? Many users have more than one account to sync these days! Also, none of them seem to offer different fonts, underline etc. My jailbroken iphone could do that a long time ago!
That leaves the default app. Seems to work OK and I have two accounts from Exchange 2010 synced BUT when I add a third (from 2007....don't know if that's the problem) then it starts to kill by battery.
Are you syncing from Exchange 2007 or 2010?

Sorry guys but needs to be free.
To be honest I don't know what my work place uses ... BUT! ... I think it is likely to be 2007.
I am using this and so far it is working very well for me.

There's a bug in the stock Samsung email app that causes a wakelock, you can try the version I posted and what Seifer1975 posted link above.
Without source code for the Samsung one it's hard to add the code to solve the wakelock. My skills aren't that great but will see if I can try editing the smali files but I'm no expert. If an expert can take a look that would be great.
My sister set up Hotmail via exchange on the stock Samsung one and damn massive wakelocks, 1700+ counts, this was on push and caused massive drain. Going to get her to try the above version and see the differences.
Personally, I'm trying out Moxier Mail trial very nice, but only on manual as what's the point getting push when I'm in the office? I turn on push when out and about.
You can also see my signature for a very crude hack of the Samsung stock email client with the wakelock fix (all I did was replace the smali file with the fixed one).
The wakelock fix only addresses one kind of wakelock (where the connection gets interrupted during a sync). I found that it helps but my Exchange email wakelocks are still longer than I would like. Most likely it is because of bad Exchange server or carrier settings. Unlike Blackberry push, Exchange ActiveSync "push" is more like a slow pull so it really depends on how long your phone is allowed to maintain an idle connection. Might be worth talking to your Exchange admin to check their settings (I think Microsoft has some recommended settings on their website.)

Downloaded and installed your version, will test it during the week and see how it goes. Ironically I had v2.3.4 installed on my phone not the 2.3.5r1 but I can't see any new 'features' between the too ...

Thanks for your help, I actually saw your version first which let me to the above.
I'd love to know why there is no mail client that:
- Let's you sync more than one activesync account
- Does NOT kill the battery
- Has html signatures
- Has a decent widget with mail preview (at least the subject!)
- Can use different fonts and/or underline, italic, bold etc.
Must be too much to ask for...

Email in the phone

Guys
I am using an Android phone. I have the stock email program and I have also K9 and Enhanced Email all running at the same time.
I have an Gmail account but don't use it for email or for nothing really dont trust the cloud/google.
My problem is all the email apps work great BUT when I open outlook then they all get removed form my phone. So basically the only emails I am left with are the send ones(in my phone). This happens with my POP and exchange accounts.
My question:
1) is there a Mail App that will make a copy of the email in my phone so when I open outlook they wont get sync and disappear?
2) If number 1 is no then is there a easy way to full your phone to keep the emails.
Thank you

A properly configured Exchange server usually doesn't allow the local device to retain the message data, it's all accessed real-time from the server. Its possible you have what I call a Half-Ass Exchange, which means you have a central address directory, but the IT department set up Outlook and Exchange to store messages locally on the PC rather than on the server. This would lead to what you are experiencing... Outlook takes all the messages off the server, leaving your phone with nothing to see when it connects. There's not a whole lot you can do about that unless your IT guys will move your email data to the Exchange server. Or maybe they have an IMAP access option. (See below)
With pop3 accounts... You have a similar problem, except there is no way to for two different devices to access the same data. The closest you can get would be to configure both devices to leave messages on the server after downloading them. Any emailed replies then can only be accessed from the device from which you sent them.
If you have the option, switch your pop3 accounts to IMAP. All user data is kept on a server (just like GMail), and any device that is connected to that account automatically syncs with the server, including access to deleted messages and sent messages sent from any other device.
All that being said... The stock email program kinda sucks. I would stick with the 3rd party apps like K9.
This is a new issue to me. I came from a PRE WEBOS and i did not have that problem. I believe the problem is in the way ANDROID OS handles emails. Basically all its changed is the device all else remained constant. I believe but not sure that if i was run all my mail thru gmail this will not be an issue. Its that true?
Thanks

I access my pop3 mail just fine using K9 (again, I don't like the stock email program). Downloaded messages remain on my phone after they've been downloaded by my Thunderbird installation on my PC.
My current company doesn't have an Exchange server, so I can't speak to that with direct knowledge... My lat experience with Exchange was about two years ago, so its behavior could certainly have changed! My current company has 10 locations, and they are content to use a 3rd party pop3 solution for email. As an IT man, that annoys me, but then, I don't write the checks!
If you haven't changed any settings in your Outlook, then I would look closer to your settings in the email programs. K9 specifically has a setting that you need to check in order to download the messages to your phone (as opposed to just reading them off the server). I don't remember if it came checked by default...
Check to see if your phone email programs are set to actually download entire messages from the server, or just the message headers. In K9, there is a specific setting under account
