I've had my DHD since they came out last November and I've had no real issues with it in all that time. However, I've now got a hugely annoying issue with sound where all sound, ringtones, music etc, comes through distorted at max volume where before it was clear. The obvious suggestion is to turn the volume down but even two steps down from max. volume it still happens depending on the sound coming from the speaker. I don't know how else to describe it except perhaps tearing and that doesn't sound very accurate to what is happening.
I don't remember when this first started happening but I'm pretty sure it was a few months ago and I was using a Sense based ROM at the time. The issue got so bad that instead of playing distorted sound in Sense it would just cut out and all sound would stop for what seemed like two or three minutes. Switching to CM7 has prevented it cutting out but the distortion is still there so I don't think it's related to a specific ROM unless it's a volume boost that was done over all ROM builds. As anyone who owns a DHD will know the audio has always been a little on the quiet sound but the level I have the volume at now is below what I'm comfortable with.
Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to fix this audio issue? It's almost to the point now where I'm thinking of going back to stock and sending it in for repairs. Don't make me do that.. you know it's not a fun process.
I'm only replying to this in case anyone has similar issues so they can see my resolution. Unfortunately it's gotten worse, to the point that I lost all sound on all ROMs bar a few squeaks from the speaker. The in-call speaker worked fine and I could make calls with no issue but no notifications, alerts, alarms etc would sound on the external speaker.
I flashed back to stock Gingerbread and I've sent my phone off to HTC, via T-Mobile UK, to be repaired. I'm also hoping they fix the misaligned camera issue too. I'm a little worried because despite trying I could not get S-ON back before I took it in but it's using stock bootloader and an HTC RUU ROM. Anyway, I'm basically saying that it's a bad sign and will have to go in for repairs. Hopefully this will save anyone from wondering in the future if they get the same sort of issue.
I'm having the same problem.. I think.. if you are talking about the speaker that you make the phonecalls with.. not the "external" speaker.. that works fine..
it has a crackling sound with mine.
Sounds like the external speaker is busted. You already send it to repair, probably that's the only solutions.
Need some advice or trouble shooting tips.
Lately, my DHD is experiencing a sharp popping sound when I wake the device, use an app, or receive messages via Whatsapp or Line.
Presenting I am on JB and had been on AOSP for a long while. The popping sound only started recently after a period of testing Sense 3.6 and Sense 4 ROM's. Going back to AOSP, I noticed the sound right away. Even with all touch options disabled, the sound remains. It's coming from the rear speaker and even if the device is on mute, the sound can be heard.
As well, with online messaging, if I put my ear on the speaker, you can heard a slight hiss and it gradually gets louder until the pop sound cracks.
This problem doesn't happen with the new Sense ROM's I tested. What I have done was tested different AOSP and JB ROM's with the same result.
My next plan is to download a stock version on GB (ARHD is the choice I selected) and test the issue there. However, I am starting to think that I should return straight back to unrooted stock ROM, but I am not sure if that is really necessary.
My question is,,,, has anyone experienced this sound issue and if so, are there any suggestions or tips? As well, could someone experienced actually offer an explanation for the sound. Is my device on its' last legs?
I am thinking it might be kernel or radio related. I really don't know and hope someone can shed some light on this subject.

I highly doubt that it's software related. I've not seen anyone report any such kind of behavior and neither have I experienced it with either Sense or AOSP roms. The fact that the pop sound does not happen when you're on Sense roms is a bit strange, however I think it maybe explainable by the fact AOSP versions generally have boosted volume levels for better sound.
Personally, I think that you should get the speaker module replaced before it breaks down completely (which I believe is a very real possibility given the nature of the problem you've stated).
Just tested ARHD and when I make a call, there is a slight tick or crackle sound coming from the front ear piece. The sound is faint, but when put the phone to my ear and press the call button, I can clearly hear it.
I'm going to test the original radio and see if that sound remains. If it does, it seems the previous post above just might be my issue and I really hope not.
You could also try a can of compressed air.
By the way buddy, you've been here too long to be posting in the wrong section

LOL,, did I? HTC Desire HD General Section? Maybe I did... Where should I post?
As for the air compressor, I did that a couple of months ago. I'll give it a go.
As for changing the radio, I did and still have that click with calls. Looking grim at the moment.
It's a thin line between where to post, but yours is a question.

Hello,
I have a Tmo M8 converted to GPE. I recently found that the caller cannot hear me when I turn on the speaker. Upon searching around for the issue, I found this diagnostics test *#*#3242#*#* I performed the audio test and the test for Mic 2 fails as I cannot hear anything that was recorded in the test.
Clearly this is a hardware issue and the phone uses Mic 2 for noise when I switch on the speaker, it used to work on Kitkat, but I doubt the OS update is the issue here.
Anyway my question is What can I do to restore/repair Mic2 without turning it into the Manufacturer? If I can't do anything, is there a way to disable the Mic2 entirely?

I wouldn't rule out the 5.01 update as the issue. I have a stock GPE that has lost the ability to record calls after the OTA. Something has certainly changed in the update that affects the Mic.
I have a strange issue on my stock HTC One M8 (unlocked) which has been converted to a GPe using the tools on here.
I am running vanilla, OTA-pushed 5.0.1, and everything works great apart from the audio. If my phone has been on for a period of time, when I make or receive calls there is no audio through the speaker or earpiece, and the phone doesn't ring like it should.
I didn't have this problem with 4.4.4 before the 5.0.1 OTA update, so it feels like a Lollipop issue or some hardware that's malfunctioned.
My volume settings are fine (ALL profile, max. volume for ringer).
When this happens, the only way I can make or receive calls with any audio is to reboot the phone. I've tried airplane mode, fiddling with sound settings... *everything* I can think of... but a reboot is the only thing that solves it.
Does anyone else have this problem or know what the solution may be?
Thanks in advance
Have you tried a factory reset? Random bugs like this are often (although not always) due to pre-existing settings or apps, and may be resolved by doing a factory reset. If experiencing bugs after an OTA, its the first thing I recommend.
After updating to MM using the stock RUU, I'm noticing lower audio volume than I've previously experienced when I was on Lollipop. I was using SkyDragon before. I'm not sure if there was some sort of audio mod in that ROM that I want wasn't aware, so I thought I'd ask: is anyone else experiencing quieter audio after updating their M8 to MM? If so, is there any known way to give a system-wide volume boost?
Note: This question refers to system-wide audio: ringtone/notification, media, and alarms.
