[Q] Laggy Google Now Launcher? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is the Google Now Launcher laggy for the G3?
I'm using it flawlessly on my Nexus 7 FHD, my dad uses on his S3 i9300 with Lollipop, also flawlessly.
But on my LG G3, it stutters and lag during transitions. Phone is overall snappy, and doesn't lag on Nova Launcher.
Does it happen with someone else?

It's a bit laggy for me too so I'm using Nova.

I've a feeling this might be related to the resolution... But Nexus 6 uses the same resolution so.. I don't know

Nexus 6 has a better CPU and GPU.

It laggy because its rubbish. Its like that on a number of devices, even some N5 owners are complaining about it.

Nova just updated to look like Google Now Lollipop launcher.

Hell Yes! I'll have a look
Thanks for the info

It'll do! Just wish Nova Launcher had the same Google Now integration =/

id say its down to the resolution and power of the phone
the nexus 6 is beefier than the g3, so can push the extra pixels
but to be honest, it varies between users. it hasn't been laggy for me at all other than when i have really low battery.

Yeah well, like, it does run good, but I feel it's not as fast and smooth as my Nexus 7. Sure, it's pure android after all.. But the G3 has way more hardware power..
I don't know. I'm too picky.
I liked the effects of GNL, but now Nova has it, so I couldn't care less anymore, lol
Tapatalked thru my sexy Nexy7

In my opinion it's impossible that a phone like our beloved G3 can't run a simple app drawer smothness like a Nexus 6 or 6P...
NEITHER setting CPU and GPU governor on performance and locking frequency at the maximum (2,4GHz and 500MHz) GNL app drawer lags... Everything else run lagfree... Only the app drawer of Google Launcher... Why?

I still think Galaxy S 2 is the smoothest Android phone out there and it's running Gingerbread. Wait until it gets ICS.
I'm kinda disappointed by Galaxy Nexus.
Scrolling with the S2 feels weird though. The scrolling animation is smooth, ill hand it that, but its as if its slightly behind the movement of my finger. Dont have that problem with the GN, which is also very smooth in every native app. Apps not yet optimized for ICS seem to be laggy from time to time, but its app depended imo.
Overall I prefer the GN.

Nah, I feel the Galaxy Nexus is smoother.
And ICS smoothness is overrated, it doesn't magically make the phone smoother at all, at best you won't notice any difference, but I imagine the phone being bogged down by a Touchwiz/ICS combo.

There is definite lag. I can't use live wallpapers on the Nexus because of the slowdown. Quite annoying, but oh well.
Or maybe the app isn't optimized for ICS yet as the OS / device is relatively new?
Google can't control what app devs do.

Live walls at 720p....
Same problem on Rezound as well. By the way, aosp walls work a hell of a lot better than the retail ones. Lag is pretty much gone if the live wall does not scroll with launcher screen.
(Let me preface this with a pre-emptive statment that I love Android (had a GTab, currently have a TF. And I am not a "this phone rules, that phone sucks" kind of guy, these are simply my DISPASSIONATE--albeit subjective--observations.)
Call it minor or whatever, but I have to admit, the lag is one of the big reasons keeping me from getting the phone. I've tried them out in stores, all running 4.02, closed all programs, used static wallpaper, etc., and the screens lag. And almost every online video I've seen seems the same way.
Obviously it's not like the 1st generation Android phones (which truly had horrible lag), but still, I think it's kind of unacceptable in this day and age and on a $300 phone. The GS2 is noticeably smoother -- instantaneous, really. Smoother than any phone I've ever used, iPhone included.
I want to love this phone so much -- great screen, ergonomics, and, obviously immediate updates and dev support, but I'm having a hard time getting over the somewhat laggy response.
I had a GTab which, if you're familiar with them, positively sucked out of the box, but the ROMs were awesome and made it super smooth... Maybe the ROMs and/or updates will do the same for the GN.
Anyway, please re-read my first statement before you say, "well, then just get the GS2," or somesuch. Like I said, I'm not dissing the phone in any major way -- but I need to love this phone if I'm dropping $300...
I've gotten it very smooth with Cyanogenmod and Franco's kernel (smoothest by far). But I too feel the S2 is smoother. Wish they used the Exynos lol well when the S3 comes out I'll just sell this and buy that retail. Hopefully it comes to Verizon.

Omap can hold its own vs. Exynos. What you meant was the mali gpu.
Today I went into Verizon (got T-Mobile) but wanted to play with one and compare it to my ns, and the demo I played with was a bit stuttery ,I even wiped the phone in the store ,and was still stuttery/laggy my ns runs way smoother compared to the one I played with,I'm really hoping it was just that particular phone, cause if T-Mobile ever offers it subsidized I plan on getting it,but not if it runs like the demo I messed with today...bottom line I left Verizon today a bit disappointed...

Demo units aren't really a true representation of what the phone will feel like when you actually unbox it. It was being used by a bunch of other people who could of even installed apps of it. I have a NS and I can say the GN is just so much faster on ICS.

That has nothing to do with what I said. I have noticed that most apps run a lot smoother when I have force GPU acceleration on. Including Facebook, Groupon, Twitter, Netflix, etc.
This is what the OP was talking about and I offered a solution.
Also, 4.0.3 is a lot smoother than 4.0.2.

Performance?

How is the performance on the 8.4 with Touchwiz? I was looking at getting a Nexus 7 because I'm a huge fan of the vanilla Android feel and how responsive it is but I think 7" would be a bit too small for me, but I am a bit reluctant to bite the bullet on the Tab S in case Touchwiz ends up bogging things down.
The TouchWiz is much more refined in this iteration. It's a much more enjoyable experience. The UI is more simple in design. You can also disable most of it. (but not all of it) People are also going to Nova Launcher if they want Android in its most native form.
Seems snappy to me.

I have both. I got the 8.4 to replace my older version of Note 10.1 (wanted something lighter to hold for reading Wall Street Journal and magazines. I keep the Nexus 7 in my purse, and am hoping the 8.4 is small enough to carry in lieu of the 7 (I received the 8.4 about an hour ago lol. I prefer CM 11 over Touchwiz, but I'll be content to wait it out. It's definitely faster than the Nexus 7. I'll still use it in the car for movies, podcasts etc.
Hope this helps.

Facebook

I just want verification, but it seems that when scrolling through Facebook the screen lags. I noticed it with curtain websites as well. Is this more of a web site problem then the phone? Because every phone I've had lags like that.
I cannot explain this, but G3 (and every android phone) when loading anything from web in the background- makes lags when scrolling. IOS always make highest priority for UI but not android. They've been trying to 'fix' it since HTC HD2 (my first phone with android) and the answer was always 'need better hardware'- even g3 hardware is miles ahead than Iphone. Probably will take another 10 years for Google to understand that smoothest of UI is more important than anything else. This is why iPhone users won't go for android.
I've noticed this since my first quad core phone and thought with more cores phones get less lag...I was wrong. It seems that individual applications aren't as optimized for fluidity as the actual Android platform. I hope this is addressed in Androids future because our phones are so powerful these days yet apps still stutter when scrolling which is a nuisance to device use.
Try opening the Facebook app --->App Settings--->Video Auto Play--->Off
Helped smooth scrolling for me.
Perhaps Android L with the 60fps thingy may address this issue..
Thanks guys!

prfraczek well personally i think your pretty much talking out your arse!
'if you had a HD2 you would have known it was winmo 6.5- as for facebook the app is crap though the browser works way better for viewing facebook.
As far as browsers go Chrome has gone from good and efficient to sub standard in my opinion?
Try dolphin browser, some of the lag issues you talk of are most likely due to html5 comparability issues found that java being removed had a big impact on browser experience.
Check this http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-hd2. And yes hd2 was running winmo6.5 but few months after i could port android on it. You are saying the Facebook app is crap. What about tapatalk and others? Every single is crap? But every one keeps lagging when scrolling. Chrome is fine because it load all pictures after you stop scrolling. As I say when something happening in backgroud then phone lags. Sorry. I need android due to my work otherwise... Won't troll....here.

There is an excuse for the lag. Its the 801 not being powerful enough to render the large amount of pixels required for the QHD screen.

But this is too heavy for 805 as well. I used to use G2 and this was to complicated for HD screen as well. And assume this is too complicated for every android phone (Galaxy S2 my girlfriend as well). Just somehow work smooth-less on every single iPhone with very slow processor 1gb of ram etc.
It could be dalvik hitting the limits. I dunno, I have nexus 7 2013 and it's very smooth on Web browsing.
Also my little tinfoil theory says that devs put more effort into iOS than android. There's plenty of evidence to support that, so it's not a stretch to assume it covers performance too.

QHD is not too heavy for the 805,look on YouTube and find the G3 805 video by Erica Griffin where it runs smoother than the 801. The IPhone 5s is drawing below QHD AND below HD its resolution is only 1136x640!!!!!. HD is 1920x1080 and QHD is 2560 x 1440. The M8 has virtually the identical CPU and GPU as the G3 and is IPhone smooth bit its only 1920x1080. You can't put the same chip in a QHD phone and expect the same performance.

I'm no trying to say that hardware is bad because in my opinion it's amazing. There is no excuses for hardware. Tha issue is 'android' optimization which is mileas away from ios. And google need to do something asap. I love android and I'm sure if someone could port ios on to this phone this could be the fastest and smoothness phone ever. Of course won't talk about ios limitations (I'm not fan of apple). So google stop complaing about hardware or similar and optimize your system. Then I'm sure apple stores becomes an empty stores hahaha

Next Launcher 3D (Glitch/Lag)

Hey guys/gals, I recently decided I wanted a new Launcher and figured what with the "high-end" specs of the G4 I would give one of the 3D UI's a whirl.
Well I installed the Next Launcher 3D just fine, but I have noticed when I hit my home navbar button (ya know, the circle on the navigation bar) or when I open up the app launcher the amount of lag I experience is absurd.....It seriously takes like 3-5 seconds to go back to my home page and I would say about 5-8 seconds to open/close the app drawer.
......Is this just a glitch with this launcher or is this device seriously not enough of a power house to run a 3D Launcher without any lag?.....I certainly hope it is not the latter of these since this device is literally brand new and suppose to be a "flagship" device.
Device. Works fine on my s6.

Well now, that is just delightfully disappointing.
It's not the device. That's ridiculous. My Galaxy S4 handled that launcher with ease. The 808 is not a entry level SoC!

I just installed the lite version (I'm not about to pay $15 to prove a point), and it works flawlessly on my device.
There is no reason the phone should struggle whatsoever with any currently available launcher, in theory, practice, or anyone's delusional mind.

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The Note 7 has the same amount of lag as every Samsung device. It'll never go away. We learn to deal with it, even though it still disappoints me year after year.

You guys are complaining about the qualcomm version.
Over here with an SM-N930F (Exynos) and can't complain. Very smooth scrolling performance.
Deliberately opened a long thread from here on xda using Samsung browser (NOT CHROME) and it scrolls perfect even with music playing in the background while downloading a file.
souds diapointing
I can confirm the choppiness not only with the browser but also the transition when switching between apps. I swear my iphone5s feels better than this brand new flagship from Samsung. I've tried to turn off all the animations and to no avail.
Sent from my SM-N930W8 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I've got a Tmobile Note 7. Mine seems to often not detect that I've tapped on something, and takes another tap or two to finally register. Other times, it'll be sluggish with scrolling, pulling down the notification shade, opening recent apps, and general on screen animations. The Samsung keyboard is especially bad.
The phone goes through almost no battery when asleep, so it doesn't seem like it would be something keeping the CPU active. This feels like either some sort of over-aggressive governor or some kind of conflict with data transferred to the new phone over Samsung Smart Switch.
I've rebooted multiple times, cleared app cache partition, changed animation scale to 0.5, disabled numerous Samsung bloat apps, nothing has helped. The issue started about a minute after I left the store, so it wasn't caused by any of this troubleshooting. Add this to the heat-up issues and unimpressive battery life when in use, and I am one frustrated dude. My S6 edge+ was leaps and bounds ahead of this thing.

yikes dude, your phone seems to have other problems other than the standard Samsung bs! tbh I haven't noticed stuttering while I've been using mine. Only problems I've had were with my back key, it took some time getting used to the placement and the capacitive touch buttons since I was coming from a phone with on-screen buttons. The only time I feel my phone gets hot is when I'm watching 1080p or higher videos while the phone is charging. You should try backing up important stuff to Google and then doing a full software reset and not use the smart switch stuff. I'll agree that the Samsung keyboard is not great I went back to SwiftKey but the screen size is something I'm still getting used to. I love that you can adjust the long press time to make it shorter on SwiftKey lol. Also Samsung browser is my default now just to test it out and I'm loving the fingerprint sign in thing for accounts and the ad block extension. Only good stuff so far

Said the same thing.
But one way to improve it -
disable as many bloat apps as possible.
Use a different launcher - sense launcher beta has made it much faster.
Use google chrome
My battery life has improved and things are marginally faster. But it is a crying shame that the nexus 6p, the htc 10, the moto z, and even samsung last devices (galaxy s6) are faster than the note 7 in the day to day.
