Next Launcher 3D (Glitch/Lag) - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys/gals, I recently decided I wanted a new Launcher and figured what with the "high-end" specs of the G4 I would give one of the 3D UI's a whirl.
Well I installed the Next Launcher 3D just fine, but I have noticed when I hit my home navbar button (ya know, the circle on the navigation bar) or when I open up the app launcher the amount of lag I experience is absurd.....It seriously takes like 3-5 seconds to go back to my home page and I would say about 5-8 seconds to open/close the app drawer.
......Is this just a glitch with this launcher or is this device seriously not enough of a power house to run a 3D Launcher without any lag?.....I certainly hope it is not the latter of these since this device is literally brand new and suppose to be a "flagship" device.

Device. Works fine on my s6.

Well now, that is just delightfully disappointing.

It's not the device. That's ridiculous. My Galaxy S4 handled that launcher with ease. The 808 is not a entry level SoC!

How so? I was just stating that if a GS4 can handle it, the G4 could handle it easily.

On paper yes, but in reality it doesn't. You talking theory, I am talking practice.

I just installed the lite version (I'm not about to pay $15 to prove a point), and it works flawlessly on my device.
There is no reason the phone should struggle whatsoever with any currently available launcher, in theory, practice, or anyone's delusional mind.

[Q] Is your Nexus 7 little bit slow?

Hi, I bought my device recently from local store. I do have some multitouch issues (even single touch) so I'll probably be swapping for new one, hoping for good luck. But before that I have another concern, overall opening apps, switching in between and going to homescreen feels quite.. slow. Especially default youtube app takes almost 2 sec to open.
Is this normal for all devices?
Sounds like you may have a faulty device. I've never noticed my Nexus 7 to be slow in comparison to my Note 8, iPad 3 and other devices. (the iPad 3 IS slow though!) However YouTube does open slower than any other app I tried. Seems like a full second before it opens.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yeah YouTube does take a second or two to open. But other apps are fine for me. If it's slow for other apps you have than that's not normal.

Yeah it's bit slow for other apps too, but what I care about the most is going to home screen and switching between apps, the lag there is pretty annoying and I didnt see it in reviews I checked. Considering the hardware I thought this stuff should be immediate.

If you upload a video of what you are experiencing we could compare speed to our devices. That way you can decide to return it or exchange it. You should not keep it if you find it annoying. The only question is whether you should exchange it for a correctly working tablet or return it because you need a different device altogether. (Though I've tried many tablets and haven't had one that feels faster to me.)

Mine was definitely a little sluggish too, my points of comparison were a Tab 3 8.0 and an HTC One phone. I was frustrated with the device between that and the multitouch bugs made it unusable in landscape mode. I ultimately rooted it, updated to the Q release, and put CleanROM on it and it's significantly faster and runs like I expected it to stock. Not everyone wants to root, but if you're up for it that should fix your issues I bet.

Aah should've done so, already returned it and got my money back. Leaving country for school, so I'll try to buy it there, I don't trust stores around here, this was actually already a second Nexus 7. If nothing else, multitouch issues were on both devices.

[Q] Will any Note 3 user get the Note 4

Anyone jumping on the Note 4 train later in the year? I am sure we can safely assume that the specs will be top of the line.
Probably SD 805
Might even be 4GB of RAM
I may but it will depend on the actual phone once it is released. The biggest deciding factor for me will be how locked down it is.
Antutu benchmarks revealed a 2K display, which is insanely good, I would wait and see how the phone first turns out to be. The display alone is a large upgrade also the newer TW shouldn't be as bloated and more stable + better looking. So probably.
The N3 is basically perfect in my eyes, so the N4 will have to be a pretty significant improvement for me to cash in my upgrade. If they take away the home button, that'll be a definite dealbreaker for sure.
Had the N2 and N3 and will more than likely get the N4.
I buy a phone now ~every six months or so, but no guarantee it will be the Note 4 unless it's the best phone at the time. I'm about due, so they better hurry up.

haha I was thinking the exact opposite - the only only thing I have disliked about the Note3 and GS3 coming from my 1st smartphone (LG g2x) was the hardware home button. I loved the clean 4-soft-key setup from my old LG.
If Samsung made a Note4 for me that was just a Note3 with all softkeys I'd buy it in a heartbeat :silly:
I will be JUMPing as soon as t-mobile lets me.
ya like hardware soft keys too, on screen and hardware keys are a no no
I've had every Note since the N7000/i717 (had both of those) and the N3 is end of the line for me. It's been good but Samsung hates developers and it'll take too long to get a solid device tree for non-TW roms.
Will probably be going with an iPhone or a new Nexus phone instead.
How dare you mention iPhone on xda ?

There are only a few things I can think of right now that I really hate about the Note 3, and the Home button (Samsung, it's not an iPhone, and even the iPhone does it better anyway!) has to be #1.
The idiotic "drip" noise that replaced actual dialing tones, and touch sounds (audible feedback) is probably second. I had fixed the touch sounds while rooted when I was on NB4, but I upgraded to NF1 without looking up how to retain root first and Towelroot no longer works, so now I'm stuck with just turning those sounds off. I have never found a fix for the dialing tones short of replacing the dialer with a 3rd party one.
I also don't like the S-Voice or My Magazine, since they take up a otherwise useful button and can't be disabled without root (and disabling My Magazine causes double tapping the home button to crash the TW launcher).
But even with all that said, I still hate the home button first and foremost.
Will probably get the Note 4 if it supports band 12. Will come in handy up here in the North East when they deploy 700 mhz.

I'm actually looking to see what Samsung does with the next generation of the Galaxy Mega 6.3. What stopped me from buying that was the low-end specs. I didn't even mind the 720p screen.
Now if Sammy can see it in their hearts to bump the specs so that it is responsive, then the next Mega will probably be my next phone.
I will get it if it comes with no Knox crap
I will... I like to be up to date with my gadgets besides note 3 is sooo last year ?

Does anyone else sort of feel like they are using a spec'd out froyo phone?

That lag throughout the OS. Its there and if you deny it you are just in denial because you don't want to admit got paid 600 for something that lags. The OS is also a mess in terms of UI out of the box but there are hidden ways to fix it. Took me forever to figure out how to get rid of those smart action notifications, I had switched to nova launcher but they kept showing up in my notification bar. Speaking of the notification bar reconfigured to mostly be a settings bar, if you scroll to the right at the top of the bar and click edit, you can get your notification space back.
There is lag. It's like when you swipe a long list for example, the page "stick" and you have to wait for a millisecond before swiping again. Some apps take few seconds more to open too. I rooted yesterday and customized the **** out of my phone. Removed bloatware and unwanted features. Changed the font to Roboto. Still kinda feel it is a tad slower than my Z Ultra with GPe. Makes me wonder how this G3 is going to shine with stock Android on it.

i've noticed scrolling lag in virtually every flagship i've owned. (m8, n5, note3, g2)
the only time i had zero scrolling lag was on my n5 when i was on the L preview.
outside of milliseconds of hesitation when scrolling, this phone flies.
if it doesn't you screwed it up or are a liar.
(see how ridiculous that kind of statement sounds?)
I'm not trying to start a debate here or anything I'm just saying what I am experiencing with the phone. Naturally I am expecting more out of this phone than any other flagship phone I have because it is above and beyond better (or as the specs would have me believe).
Like for example swiping from the left in the xda app or the google plus app show the menu. On the G3 there is a noticeable delay before the menu shows. In my Z Ultra the menu just shows smoothly and follows my finger as I move it. It's not as smooth as on the G3.

I returned the G3 after 12 days because of it. When I was trying to quickly multitask it was bad and the frame rate drops were annoying me also. I could accept it at first but eventually it drove me mad and this was after I rooted and debloated. I'm waiting on the more powerful 2k phones until I get one.

How did you manage this?
I've added Roboto TTF font files to my "system/fonts" folder, but they don't appear in the "settings -> font type" menu.
Are they kept in a different folder to stock?
No, no. Don't manually copy them. Use ifont or font changer or romtoolbox. Whatever app you use just be careful as in my experience messing too much with font can cause bootloops. And without any custom recoveries available for the G3 as of this moment you'd be stuck. I personally used all of those three and I find ifont better as it replaces the whole set and all weights not just the default.

I still like the phone in general. And I can't exchange it with another brand or model as this is subsidized by a carrier. But I plan to buy an M8 in a few months and convert it to a GPe version.

The M8 is the smoothest Android phone I've ever used, even on stock . The frame rate is consistent and it hardly ever lags. The only problem is, it's got a terrible camera.
I must agree with the people who experience lag and delays throughout the system. My first impression also was that it wasn't blazing fast, at least not at fast as I expected... But I did not buy this phone for the lg system/ecosystem. The first thing I did: install nova launcher prime. And I must say I have a smoother experience in the launcher department thanks to it.. For the rest: apps run fast, multitasking runs fairly smooth (although sometimes my recent apps are empty for some reason - just go back to home and my recent apps reappear).
I am not going to say this is a beast of a phone but it is decent, especially when you take in count all those pixels it has to push.
If you don't like it, feel free to change. But I am sure there are a lot of persons who really like this phone, including me.

I don't understand what you people are doing to see lag on this phone.. Although I've seen many posts saying that the T-Mobile version is much snappier than the att version.. Maybe due to bloat? Idk I'm completely stock running the GEL launcher and it's so much smoother than my nexus 5 (on L) or gs5
I dont have any lag issues and am running nova anyway.
The phone has its issues but i think its worth persevering with because its decently priced, the screen is excellent and you can actually do things about the battery life and screen with little or no effort. The camera on this thing really is great.

I'm with you. My only experience with Android devices is the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, which is said to be the smoothest Android experience available. I just don't see this lag that people go on and on about. Then again, I'm a minimalist user so I got rid of the weather widget, I got rid of the animations(which is the same thing I do on the Nexus 4 and 5 anyway). I still use the LG stock launcher and I am using ART
Believe me, since I work from home I use my phone a lot. I dunno, maybe it's faulty units, maybe the device just works well for me because of my minimalistic settings. I have certainly disabled and uninstalled as much bloat as I could without needing root access.

The camera on the m8 is beyond bad. What was htc thinking with 4mp, you can't zoom, expand, or crop at all.
This phone reminds me of the Motorola Droid X2, great specs on paper but poor performance. Music would actually skip on the x2 if you tried to do something else while listening. That's similar to the scale of the aux bug on this phone.
after debloating and switching launchers (nova) i have found no more than the occasional lag i've seen in every other flagship (i've had them all aside from the gs5)
as for the sidebar stutter, i've never had that happen either, the only consistent stutter i get is scrolling lag in facebook, which i've seen in every other phone aside from the nexus 5 while on the L preview.

sorry, i meant to quote the OP

which launcher make my sammy super responsive

I found playing with the S7 ( still do not own a Note 7, will arrive next week, but S7 has the same processor) that is not responsive as I would have imagined. ( Exynos, european version).
My question is how much I can improve in percentage point the performance of my telephone installing a lighter than touchwiz new launcher?
As I am not rooting the phone, will Touchwiz continue to take a consistent amount of RAM and processor power for background services?
Nothing wrong with touchwiz now phones snappy as it should be
Try turning off animations in developer options.
If you have s7 then why don't you try various other launchers and do your own research instead of being lazy!!!!

It is not mine the S7( also I should be quite rich to update from S7 to note7 ), I just played a bit. AFAIK in the video Samsung did a great job this year with Touchwiz, no doubt about that. Still I am curious to know which improvement I can have running a benchmark test with or without a light launcher.Possibly somebody did it.

I use nova launcher prime at the moment and intend on installing it on my note 7 when it arrives. It runs nice and quickly on my Xperia z3 so I imagined the note 7 will run very nicely with all the horsepower it offers!
Nova launcher can also be customised heavily allowing me to get my phone looking and operating just how I want it to.
nova is a very good launcher, I have used it since 5 phones ago, the best in my opinion
Nova launcher works great on N7 so far. First thing I download when I get a new phone
I like the Google Now launcher. But if you use it, beware not to turn on its listen-via-BT setting, as described at the end of this thread:

You're either blind or a liar.
Every Samsung phone still lags and drops frames. My Nexus 6P from last year, and every other flagship phone I've had this year, are basically lag and stutter free. Samsung packs too much crap onto their phones and gets away with it every year just like the article here on XDA pointed out. Turning off animations is not a good solution, if any solution at all. The lag is still going to be there, you just won't see it as easily.
If you want your phone to be faster, ditch the Samsung launcher for starters. I too highly recommend Nova. Also, buy one of the Package Disabler apps and turn off the junk you don't use. I still have a fairly feature rich Note7, but turned off crap I'll never use like the Edge screen, Samsung's launcher, and some built-in Samsung apps. The phone is pretty quick, especially since the last update, but there are still times where it stutters. Welcome to the world of Samsung. The only reason I accept it and deal with it is because they have the best camera, display, build, and features of all the flagships this year. But I prefer the software experience of my Nexus all day, every day.
I use htc sense beta. Perfectly fine for me actually

I fully agree that samsung are amazing pieces of hardware, and furthermore they do not take Coltan from Congo mines:laugh:
On the other side i hate bloatware, but would like to have an easy feature to back up all the disabled packages from package disabler
( i am guessing you mean this ), because i need to run developer tests, and I am wondering how to update to the new android version if I have the bloatware deactivated!
my questions in order of importance for you and others are
1) Do package disabler support a backup?TIf so takes time to back up to the original settings, as it is a function I could do quite often. Also could be that is not tested for Samsung Note 7.(EDIT: I saw it supports backup from the video)
2) Nova will disable also the following cool functions? the security folder, the edge function and smaller screen to use with one hand? If so I prefer touchwiz, differently by you I am an edge fan
There are a couple general rules that apply across android with any launcher...
Get enough stuff running in the background and it will hurt your phones performance. The saying with PCs way back was, "If you don't use it, lose it". It still applies today and is applicable to phones and tablets as well. An application you don't use running in the background is at best dead weight and at worst could be costing you resources. Get rid of whatever constitutes bloat for you.
Lots of screens populated with lots of widgets is going to cost you on any launcher.
Beware of applications and widgets which are just plain using too many resources in and of themselves and those which were working fine by themselves but conflict with others when used together.
IMO Nova is a good choice for a lot of people, I use AL3 which is a bit different and works better with the way I like to lay out my phone. You can also try one of the contextual launchers and see if you like those, they don't work well for me because my schedule is too random and I travel for work but those I tried seemed to be light on resource usage.

Overall happy with V30

Coming from the S8+ and I could not be happier. The camera just amazes me. I forced myself this weekend to use the modes. What a great phone.

I thought it was weird as well. I think I read that they were testing a Korean version for whatever reason. I'm guessing it's all that they were able to get a hold of while they tested, but it seems a bit unfair of them to not wait for a US carrier model like every other reputable publication.

All it takes to prove this right is a quick read of their opinion regarding the V30 audio/headphone jack. I know of basically a whole forum of people who would kill for a phone that has awesome audio and headphone jack. In fact, for the most part, I actually like their skin over the stock Android from my Nexus. Few tweaks would really make it more useful, but no issue.
My last LG was a G5 I returned it after 2 days due to the build issues. How is the V30? Really interested in the camera and audio output

Wow I feel like verge doesn't make sense anymore, "screen is bad" is just too much, you might have received a unit with issue but you can't call the v30 franchise bad

Camera is great, but not the best and audio output through the headphone jack is the best. I say the camera is not the best overall, but for me it kind of is because I would rather have the wide angle instead lens of 2x zoom.
Picked up my V30 from T-Mobile last night. My immediate impressions, coming from an S8 and previously a Pixel XL are that this phone is great but does have some immediate flaws.
Some initial thoughts:
- The finger print scanner is blazing fast. On par with my old OnePlus 3 and my Pixel XL. In comparison, the Samsung S8 fingerprint scanner is slow, often unresponsive, and in a horrible position.
- I work from my home office full time and I spend A LOT of time on client calls. I often have headphones plugged into my phone for these calls. I just got off of a conference call and could immediately tell that the audio output through even pretty basic in-ear headphones is significantly better than my S8 was. Voice clarity is much improved and people sound more like they are in the room with you, rather than on a conference call. This is HUGE for me. And I imagine that music quality will see this same improvement through the headphones.
- I was happy to see that there was SIGNIFICANTLY less bloatware to uninstall/disable on this phone than their was on my Samsung S8.
- The overall UI is extremely fluid and fast. The speed of opening quick settings and the notification drop down, navigating through settings, and swapping between apps is on par with my Pixel XL, which is a breath of fresh air coming from the S8. However, there is still some lag to be had within apps, but I'll discuss that below.
- The camera is excellent. I'm not seeing any blurry photos, as others have apparently seen.
The negatives...
- The stock LG dialer and messages apps are hilariously ugly. I was able to get a new theme installed, which cleaned those up a bit but it still doesn't compare to the stock Google dialer/messages apps. Future "Pixel" style themes for the V30 will likely fix this, though.
- I have seen noticeable and consistent scroll lag in some apps like Chrome, Instagram, Facebook, and even in LG's own themes app. I've changed animation scaling to .5x and enabled GPU rendering in developer settings but I haven't seen an improvement. I've only had my phone for about 12 hours at this point so I'm going to give it more time to adapt. However, if this doesn't improve and/or starts effecting more apps over time, it might actually be a deal breaker for me.
- I compared the Pixel 2 XL to the V30, side by side, in my local Verizon store. The front facing speakers on the 2 XL put the single bottom facing speaker on the V30 to complete shame. The downside is that those front facing speakers come with larger bezels, though. Unfortunately, in my short time using the V30, I've already found myself accidentally covering the bottom speaker more than once.
I still have my Pixel 2 XL on order and at the moment, I don't intend to cancel it. If I find that the lag I'm seeing in some apps does not improve over time, I'll probably return the V30 and hold out for my 2 XL. I don't want to give up wireless charging or the headphone jack. But I will if I have to, in order to get a 100% lag free phone. Especially at this $800+ price point.

I'm starting to experience lag and stuttering also. This goes away with a reboot, but I don't really want to be forced to reboot several times a day. I've tried LG's cleaner app and that doesn't help. I've tried enabling the force GPU rendering, and that doesn't help for me either. I'm hoping that future updates help out. This phone is the perfect size and feels so nice in the hand. I really don't want a different phone, so I'm going to wait and see if it gets better.

@sn0warmy...you can find the stock Google dialer on APK mirror, I posted a link in a thread about the dialer. And you can download the Google Messages app from Google play.

He's saying that compared to the Samsung S8/S8+/Note 8 screens, the LG V30 screen doesn't look as good. I do concur with this. I wouldn't go back to the S8 because I much prefer the overall feel and UI of the V30. However, compared to the screen on my S8, the V30's screen looks noticeably washed out. My current long term decision is between the V30 or the Pixel 2 XL, which essentially share the same screen. So this is not much of a consideration for me. However, I could actually see this being a deal breaker for some.

That's right. Forgot about that. I'll try installing those. I'm just afraid I won't be able to truly replace the stock LG dialer/messages app system wide. But hopefully I'm wrong.

They do replace the stock LG apps. You just have to make sure and set them as your default dialer and message apps

Yeah, it's quite disheartening. I honestly think that if they went with 6GB of RAM, the lag/stuttering would be a non-issue. The lack of 6GB of RAM in these 2017 flagships, including the Pixel 2 XL, really has me scratching my head.
I believe this is the sole reason why the Note 8 (with 6GB RAM) crushes the V30 in Phonebuff's head to head speed tests. For instance, the V30 beats the S8+ (with 4GB RAM) in the same speed test.
If OnePlus can easily do it, LG and Google should be able to, as well.
My G6 has weird, terrible lag sometimes too. A reboot does fix it, but waiting a while sometimes makes it go away too. I know this is a V30 forum, but sad to see this issue persists across these 2 devices. Its not a deal breaker for me, but sure is something that I experience way too often on a 2017 smartphone.
