Overclocking Stock ROM/Kernel Help! - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

(The thread was listed on the Q&A forum, but after not much help, I decided to look for help here!)
Hello everyone, this is my first topic on XDA after lurking for a while!
Anyways, today my topic is going to be concerning an Android Mini Tablet called the PlayMG. It's a WiFi tablet by a startup that's now gone bankrupt. The actual name of the device (development-wise) was the ACTScom A930. It was supposed to be a small 4 inch tablet like an iPod Touch with Android. You can find various info by googleing the name.
The specs go as stated:
ARM TCC8920 @ 960 MHz
1 GB RAM
4 GB DDR3 Storage
Android 4.0.4 ICS
Geekbench test:
http : //browser.primatelabs . com/geekbench3/356000
(sorry, I'm new so I can't post links until 10 posts)
The device was pretty cheap (around 90 dollars) and since then I've rooted it. I had to use SafeRoot because there is virtually no support anywhere for this device. As you can tell from the specs above, the device is fairly weak. My goal is to overclock the device to run at around 1.10-1.25 Ghz, however I'm stuck on the stock ROM and kernel. And as you can probably guess, there is no one to develop and overclockable Kernel for it. I have a few questions that I would like answered:
I was wondering are there any methods to overclock the stock kernel? Is that pretty much impossible?
Are there any ICS (or any) kernels that might work on this device?
Could I build the Kernel myself?
^Questions regarding this:
-Since the company went bankrupt, I can't really obtain a stock kernel, Could I somehow extract it from the device itself?
-If I were able to get the kernel, where can I go on XDA to guide me to building an overclockable kernel?
Does anyone have any ideas on how to overclock this device? I'm accepting all ideas, good or bad!
Thank you everyone in advance. All responses/knowledge is welcome!

[Q] what is the best kernel for gaming

Hi
Can someone help im trying to find the best kernel for gaming
Sorry to hijack your thread man, just trying to keep the forums clean as I also have a question about kernels.
I read recently that slow data transfer speeds via USB could be combated by using the vorkkernel. I installed it but didn't really see much improvement? Apart from my phone started to fecking melt! Anyone else get major heat issue with vork?
My question is apart from flashing the entire Rom again, has anyone got the stock Cyanogen 7 build 8 kernel or a less hot one than vork?
Sent from the back o beyond using the smell of burning plastic via a vork kernel'd desire, s-off, N1 table, CM7 build8.
OP : I'm not sure if gaming is affected by kernels? Isn't it down to cpu speed and processor size? Also dependant on your Rom I think?
Although I'm prepared to be corrected on this, I don't have much experience with kernel dabbling.

[Q] ICS HWA Discussion

Hi everyone/ developers/ users of xda developers and wfs owners. I'm quite new to xda developers ( as in ten minutes new) although I've been following things quite religious for a few months now.
SO, I was wondering whether anyone could tell me whether there are any roms with true hardware acceleration?
At the moment I have modpunks Ice cream sandwich/cm9 alpha 1 on my wildfire s (gsm) and I'm loving it alot, although I know he said he was releasing kernal 3.0 soon. Does kernal 3.0 have better hwa then? My second question is about forcing GPU rendering in applications ( on ICS ). I've searched and haven't been able to really find out much about it, by principal it should be good, especially since the adreno graphics drivers release for arm6, but I don't really know whether to use it or not.
I know this is a crapload of stuff to read but I'm really interest in custom roms and want to get involved, I appreciate any answers or discussion even

Problems with installing custom kernels

Hello guys, hopefully someone can help me figure something out. Whenever I install any of the custom kernels we have available, my device just gets stuck in a bootloop. With the exception of one kernel, that is the trinity alpha 23 which is clocked @ 17 something. All the other kernels are being clocked @ 1839. Or I should say not being clocked that high, but rather having the clock speeds open and available. What I am starting to believe is that my processor doesn't like to see those speeds at all! I was wondering if anyone else was having these same issues and results. Thank you and have a blessed day! By the way, I have stated my issue in both of the kernel threads of whom the kernels belonged to and didnt get a response from neither developer, that was my reason for posting here. Thank you.

[Q] Xperia Play under ICS Rom / Custom Kernel - Useful for gaming ?

Hi,
I have a Xperia Play R800i currently on stock ROM/Kernel (Clockworkmod and root).
I am currently considering moving to custom Kernel and one ICS Rom, especially now that the touchpads are apparently fully functionnal.
However, I have some questions related to how I am used to use my phone.
I basically use my phone for three things :
1. standard phone functions (messages, receiving and calling...)
2. some internet search
3. gaming
Apart from that, I use a few apps like a calendar, some pdf reader, camera on the go and so on...
But I do not use to go for full multitasking.
So, first concern :
I understood so far that ICS roms were enabling greater multitasking but that game performance could be altered (broken games in ICS and Sony concern of the gaming performance leading to the official Sony ICS rom to be frozen).
Anyone has a clear answer on this ? Does ICS Rom give a boost to gaming ?
Now, second concern :
Regarding the custom Kernel, I read various things going from the "Hey, that's the greatest thing on earth!" to the "What a battery drainer!".
I also read some complaints on the fact that even if the cpu can be properly overclocked, the gpu overclocking is extremely limited at the moment.
Therefore, is it useful to overclock ?
Does it give such a boost in overall performance and in gaming performance ?
I can fully understand that emulation is certainly boosted up by overclocking but can we really feel the difference on gpu intensive games like Dead Trigger for example ? As the gpu is not overclocked, is there any benefit on such games ?
I am pretty sure some of these questions are already answered some way or the other in this forum but it seems I was not able to find any specific thread on the subject.
Hopefully, some of you will have clear answers for me.
Thanks a lot in advance, guys,

Overclocking on ics for me doesnt make a difference in gaming performance/emulation or using everyday apps. Big battery drain on ics rather than stock gb. Clearly ics is not made for the xperia play because of its specs. ICS is tailored for the higher end phones. Stock gb is the way to go.
Thanks for your answer,
Before I decide to unlock my bootloader (I still have 1 year of warranty so far...), I will try to apply the various XPeria Play tweaks, get the V6 Supercharger script to work and remove bloatware with the Aroma bloatware remover.
This may help...
You confirmed that ICS ROMs may be so useful so far. They may come up smoother later on and it seems Sony is working on a Jelly Bean ROM for Xperia Play. So, wait and see !
Regarding the overclocking, as the gpu can not be overclocked so far, I will not mess with this at the moment.
I am just wondering if a custom kernel coming with improved Adreno 205 gpu drivers may give a speed boost, even without overclocking...
Cheers,

Let me cut to the chase no matter what you do use v6, adreno gpu drivers, overclocking or whatever you didnt list.By using ICS there will always be lag on some if not most applications as I said so before ICS will never beat GB. Where are your sources? Sony just confirmed they wont be making Jb on the 2011 line devices.
Well, it seems I got false hope from previous Sony statements.
They said no ICS, then one spoke-person said not JB, then Sony came back saying they are currently investigating JB implementation on all there 2011 Xperia phones (where I got stuck...) and they just recently announced that JB was simply dished away but they would follow up the 2011 products with firmware maintenance...
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/10/19/sony-mobile-confirms-2011-xperia-devices-will-not-get-jelly-bean
So, it seems you are right and my sources were simply outdated... That's a real pity in terms of marketing communication.
I can understand the 2011 phones may not be powerful enough to allow for ICS or JB but Sony just created some false hope for nothing and this could have been avoided.
Coming back to the subject, there is one point I did not understand properly.
I fully understood your position regarding ICS on Xperia Play. No way to get it 100% perfect whatever we do. That's fine.
Now, would you recommend GB custom roms and all the v6 + overclock + tweak + all I don't know at the moment to get a smoother, faster experience and gaming performance ?
Or do you consider that even under GB based roms and kernels, the Xperia Play performance does not make a difference big enough to justify risking the warranty (especially unlocking the bootloader) ?
Thanks in advance for your feedback, you've pointed very interesting points so far :good:

Might want to fix that link there. As for your question about custom GB roms/kernels, I personally believe it's worth it. The performance gains from Linaro-compiled kernels (such as DooMKerneL or LuPuS-GB) more than justifies it in my eyes.
Ok.
Many people are focusing on NXT v1.3 custom rom.
I may have a try on that one later on with DoomKernel.
PS : link fixed by the way...
use this one :

[Q] Upgrade Rom and Kernel

Hello everyone
First i want to congrats all the persons how make all this tutorials, they really help me a lot.
And now the questions, i already read the forum and the rules and i know i cant ask for compare any roms or kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2097137) but i still need a few lights.
I need a kernel and a rom that help me save battery and can be fast enough for applications.
The last 2 i use was CM10 and FreeXperia kernel, and now i am using kernel vengeance and Xperia Ultimate HD 3.0. I test both with Antutu Benchmark and give me 4800 with Xperia Ultimate HD, and 5800 with CM10.
There is any combination Kernel/Rom that can help me make higher score and at same time save battery?
Many thanks

Welcome to xda forums.
It's useless to say that you have seen the rules and you still make this thread, the only answer that you should get and probably the only one you will get, is this one:
TRY yourself each ROM from the Android Development forums, and then you will see which one suits your needs, and serves you the best.
Also, don't forget that AnTuTu scores aren't 100% reliable, and they're based mainly on Governors, I/O schedulers and CPU Frequencies, it's not that reliable because I myself get better gaming performance with a Governor that gave me 5300, than with one that gave me 6000, they are just numbers.

Like above post said, try out the different ROM and kernel combinations yourself as the resulting performance is different for everyone because of the different settings you use and the different apps you install on your phone. If you want to find the most suitable kernel for your phone, check the ROM thread. Each ROM thread should have a list of recommended kernels that will work best with the ROM. For example, Jader recommended LuPuS kernel for his UHD ROM. However, if LuPuS does not work well for you, you can always try out other kernels in the recommended list. It differs with each user.
As for benchmark, it only gives a general idea of your phone's performance. It is not accurate enough to genuinely gauge phone performance. The one who determines that is yourself. Only you can tell if the performance is good by trying it out yourself.

Thanks for the replies.
I did like both sugested, trying. I tryied a ICS Rom and i didnt like it. So far the only one that i like most was CM10.1, the kernel i use was the included in the Rom. Work all allrigth.
Anyway sorry for the questions, i just wanted to make sure before starting flashing my phone.
Thanks
