Custom ROMs and camera performance - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'd really like to use a custom ROM, but camera performance is rather important for me. How big is the difference in this aspect between a custom and original ROM?
And also, what's to expect in this subject? Is there any hope to have in the near future a custom ROM with equal to original camera performance?

I have the same inquiry as well, but as for what I've been reading so far. It is not possible at the moment or possibly will never happen( I hope I'm wrong with this one.).
Conclusion: You can't have the best of both worlds.

There is a clear big difference between custom and stock rom in terms of camera quality. It's like night and day in my opinion. Although shots taken by custom rom are acceptable but compare to stock, the details and colors are way off when using custom rom. In terms of futurem nobody knows but this issue also exist on other phone. Like Xperia 2011 devices where the quality really degrades when using AOSP based rom though the big issue there is the camera libraries.

I thought only the Z3's use those very special DRM-Codes in the TA-Partition for LowLight and other Stuff? Isn't the rest "just" Sonys Camera Software?
I would love to use CM11, and i think i could live with a bit less low light quality, but as a DSLR owner i want another camera that is good with "point-and-shoot" situations...the Stock Z1 with the superior automatic is perfect for that kind of stuff....

Can't say how much is the difference, since I did not leave the phone at stock for a very long time, but in CM I find the back camera quality pretty good even in dark settings, when the flash is being used (low ISO).
However, when the flash is disabled or the front camera is used in low light (high ISO), the pictures are next to unusable.
I still can't understand what exact part of the camera processing configuration is stored on those DRM partitions and why did Sony, who otherwise support custom ROM development, made such particular decision...

I'd like to lift this thread and ask again, are there any lollipop roms with better or at least the same quality on camera?

You will not find a CM camera that comes anywhere near the quality of stock, sorry. Feel free to keep asking.

4.0.4 Camera Improvements are noticeable

Hey,
I know this is not a huge thread or the most useful ever, but i didn't wanna swarm threads with potentially irrelevant info.
But anyways, the camera improvements are great. You used to have your frame focused and the shutter came too long after the focus so you often had blurry pictures. Now you actually notice that it refocuses at the exact moment of the shutter (obviously "exact moment" is somewhat an expression). That alone improves the quality by a ton and most likely what they refer to when saying they fixed "stabjlity".
So after you flash to 4.0.4 don't fear to use your camera anymore!
I assume all the camera quality improvements will be present in the latest CM9 nightly based on Android 4.0.4 as well?

Thanks for this. I wonder if there's anything in the update that'll improve the graininess of the pics.

I use AOKP 29, and any AOSP based 4.0.4 should have similar core improvements. So yes, your assumption is right

The graininess does also seem to have major improvements. Overall the quality is A1. I dont wanna risk it and say its like iphone pictures but it sure as hell is one step closer.
This just got me excited...I use my camera a lot. I was going to hold off on upgrading to AOKP 4.0.4 build until they added everything back in but maybe I will make the jump quicker. Post some bad lit pictures up in the picture thread please and specify it is on 4.0.4 please. I am sure a lot of people would be interested to see these...
wow, the camera is muuuch better. is like they discovered how to focus propertly
The yellowish issue when using the flash seems to be gone too.
After testing further I have to say my only complaint is that the shutter speed is not constant, as in sometimes it will take the picture instantly and sometimes it will lag a little (not because of focus)
I still wish there was a way to batch delete photos.

Long press on a photo while in the Gallery and then you can choose which ones you want to delete and delete them!
Lol what? Batch delete has been around since at least Eclair, if not earlier.
A comparison could be great
I've taken a couple of shots and while it's too early to say, I think it's improved.
To be honest a comparasion would be somewhat hard to do. And also... why... Its better, its not really gonna change anything, its not like comparing 2 equivalent and different products.

I think there is. Just long press a pic till a checkmark appears. Then press each other pic you want. Menu, delete.
Has anyone else notice that the camera volume is really loud and there's no way to turn it down other than completely off? Has it always been like this? I thought it use to correspond to notification volume.

O seu atualizou via OTA?
Do you have update via OTA?
So far I see more aggressive post processing correction of white balance on flash shots. Way less blue tint after processing. Also night scene mode usable for macro shots since it focuses on near objects much better. Will experiment more but so far just these two makes it much more usable for me.
Seems to focus a lot faster for me while not being blurry at all.
That's a definite improvement if I'm seeing it right.

[Q] Will the camera quality suffer if I install AOKP?

Touchwhiz has a beautiful full functioning camera.
If I install AOKP, will I lose all these features, and getting a really dumbed down camera?
Will the quality suffer too?

short answer? Yes.
long answer? For the most part, yes.
What you end up losing is a lot of the bonus features that are specific to the TouchWiz camera, such as the extra picture modes like Best Shot and that kind of stuff. I'm not sure about quality either way..... haven't really compared image quality side by side. Thankfully it still has the zero shutter lag (unless it's focusing, and using the flash, as with TouchWiz)... which is nice.
All i can really say is that if your phone is already rooted and everything, if you decide to try AOKP to see how the camera is, highly recommend making a backup. can try it out, if you don't like it, full wipe and restore the backup and you'll be back to where you were, as if you never tried it to begin with.

You will most certainly lose quality. Unfortunately there is a loss of quality as well as a loss features. Granted...many of the touchwiz camera features are (very) gimmicky but the overall picture quality is excellent compared to AOSP camera on AOKP or CM10...I am using CM10 currently and am trying to find a good replacement camera app.

AOSP(or any other vanilla android) camera vs Touchwiz Camera

I just saw that OMNIrom has finally been available for d3att and im quite excited about since it has multiwindow(one of the few things that keeps me locked to touchwiz).
But i was wondering is the stock camera a downgrade? I have read reports and discussions saying the stock camera is much more inferior to the touchwiz camera.
Besides the obvious benefits of having the newest android build, better battery(what i heard), and less bloat(although i usually just titanium them away), I would like peoples opinions on how else does stock compare to touch?

It depends on what you define personally as a "downgrade". Obviously because Touchwiz is proprietary to Samsung and not available for devs to port to their AOSP based roms, you're not going to get the fancy bells and whistles that come bundled with Samsung's camera app. However, I don't think it's fair to call it a downgrade if you're speaking merely in terms of picture and video quality.
From personal experience I've found the stock camera on most of the AOSP 4.3 based roms to be just as good in quality as Samsung's app. 4.4 based roms still have to work out bugs in the stock camera app so I wouldn't try those first. Find yourself a stable 4.3 based rom like CyanogenMod 10.2 or Quantum V2 Final and try your luck with those.
If you find that the camera lacks features you found yourself liking from the Samsung camera app, I suggest finding a good 3rd party camera app such as Camera Zoom FX. It provides just enough features that make the camera a pleasure to use while also retaining great picture quality. It has settings that allow for full 100% jpeg quality whereas some may limit the quality to 80% or less.
Hope this helps, I know how hard it is to find a straight answer since a lot of this depends on your own experience and observation but hopefully this leads you in the right direction.
thanks a lot for ur answer. like im quite sick of the time it takes to upgrade anything by samsung. i never knew that some apps would limit the size. but anyway ill wait for the 4.4 to be a little more stable first. ill definitely make the switch once i gte word that samsung wont support NA S3s anymore,

[Q] Best camera ROM

Hello,
I'm not asking about which ROM is the best. But as it was in the case on HTC there are some roms with better and worse camera quality (ex. sense 3,6 best camera, sense 5 worst). So which ROM has the best camera quality? I mean not the ROM itself but:
- sony Kitkat stock
- sony 5.0 stock
- sth based on CM 12
- sony ported from z3, z2 etc.
Please tell me if there are any differences between camera quality on each ROM.
Thanks

I've been used Sense 3/4/4+/5. I think during at Sense3(should be GB age), the camera on all Android is also bad. Sense 4/4+ is quite good and Sense 5 seems donoise too heavy so it made the quality looks bad. Never try Sense 6 though.
In my experiences, Z1c performs quite differently on all roms. I've heard some guys here and in other forum said stock 4.3(JB) got best details out but the color reproduction and WB on 4.3(and 4.4.2) is real poor. Indeed, I like stock 4.4.4 the most.
On stock 5.0.2, it looks like the jpg compression isn't as large as in JB/KK(good for outdoor). So some said better but the denoise algorithm looks more heavily now(worse than 4.4.4 at low light). But the 20MP mode quality on 5.0.2 should be a bit better(SA and scenes only available on 8MP supersampling mode). Overall, I will recommend to stick with 4.4.4 for more predictable camera quality and battery performance and wait until 5.1.1 out around July end or Aug.
CM always do bad camera on Z1c, forget it.

Bcoz on 4.4.4 you have to use this mod cam(for deodexed rom only) instead of the stock camera to get best quality or the custom rom you running pre-installed this mod.

htc one m9 common problems

iam going to buy htc one m9
does it still have it's common problems like heating, camera's problems, bettery
please help me as soon as
Heat issues - yes.
Camera issues - never had any but if anything the quality of the picture is a bit naff. So yes, it has always been naff.
Battery - of course. It's octacore, what else do you expect?.
If I had the opportunity I'd swap for an s6 or s6 edge in a heart beat.
Good phone. Buy a case for it on day one. I have a tech21 in grey and it does the job well, cost £30 though.

What's about custom roms ? Does these issues still on custom roms ??
And sorry I don't understand what do u mean by (naff)
Naff means "below par" or "below expected average" or "crap".
Custom roms will always have the same issues as stock roms and sometimes more.
Stock roms are finely tuned for that specific device in an all round environment that includes all aspects of daily use.
Custom roms have to rely on home made code as most of the time official source code isn't available so therefore other issues may exist but in all situations the hardware limitations always exist eg grainy camera with lots of noise, excessive battery consumption, and heat.
Custom roms, through root, allow you to manually manipulate settings otherwise inaccessible to the everyday user. The settings can reduce heat and battery consumption at the cost of performance and you lose stability changing the settings..
Basically. Custom roms have their own issues. If you dont understand the concept of rooting and custom roms you should spend a few hours reading up on them.
Personally I think rooted stock rom is all you need at most unless you are a developer. The average user should leave well alone.

Buy the M9 man. You won't regret. It's beautifull. Thow thw G3 has better screen, but eats battery faster...
If you can get the US version.
grab the M9, if not take the nexus
M9 is probably the most premium looking phone I've ever seen and felt.
Base on experience:
- heating up to 120f when gaming (probably common to most device but more felt in m9 due to material)
- camera (auto) = what you see with your eyes is what you get in the picture. When it's dark, the picture would be dark too unlike the samsung s6 camera which over exaggerates color to look good, if you want that you could shoot in HDR mode to achieve the same feat. It also has RAW shooting which is a plus.
- battery would be tricky. It lasts for a day on daily usage but lasts only 3-4hrs in heavy usage. (at least for me)
Stock w/ elementalX
Although I did return to stock kernel due to wakelocks going crazy. I'd see if I should install elementalX again.
