[Q] Should I root the Galaxy Note 2 now?

Hello all,
I was wondering if the thread --> [2012.11.08][SGH-I317/M] CF-Auto-Root v1.0 in the original android development is the only way to root the galaxy note 2 (at&t). Is it just "in the works"? is my main concern.
I know the possibility of methods being released later down the months when there is more support and development for the device.
The phone just came out so I'm not expecting a whole lot, but I was just concerned that maybe I should wait on rooting until a more stable method is released. I'm just worried that if I root I may not be able to go back to another method. Should I just root it now? Is there any benefit to rooting now vs later down the road?

Couldn't be any easier to do... Took like 1 minute from beginning to end. There is nothing unstable about it.

It's truly a matter of personal opinion whether or not to root. Some of us flashaholics can't wait and some of us are trying to hold out until at least the first official OTA unless something comes out that we just can't resist lol
There are a few apps I'm missing right now by not rooting but then again the phone does damn near everything I need/want without customization/rom flashes. I would like to experience the multi view feature but I suppose in due time it will be here.

Yeah when is that multi-view feature coming? I thought it was supposed to be built into the software already...but yeah I agree with you. It depends on personal choice. I was wondering if the current root method was stable...

Rooting is a personal thing. I'm a flashaholic to the core but I'm waiting for at&t to give us the OTA we need for split screen. I'm waiting for the right ROM to be cooked up before I even root my baby. But hey, that's just my personal preference right now.

Rooting is worth it just to do nandroids, triangle away w/ a custom kernel (reset counter) & Titanium Backup (apps).

Will triangle away work on note 3

Anyone try triangle away to reset the binary counter after rooting/flashing the pre rooted roms or does the ap need its code updated?

Ok there was an update to triangle away that added note 3 but it says sadly there's no counter reset yet it won't be long though chainfire is the man!

If you check the changelog for triangle away, it looks like it's not possible.

I really hope they can too as I just got back from picking up my note 3. I really want to root this thing but am going to stay stock for a bit to see if maybe someone can figure something out.
I'm not hopeful though because from what I've read it trips an efuse on root or flash of an custom bootloader. There is however a guy on Google plus(commenting on chainfire's post about knox) that is claiming that knox will reset if you replace the emmc.

I have faith in XDA and the Devs they never cease to amaze these guys will have it figured out soon :fingers-crossed: its only been 12 days since the Note 3 release I'd say at least a couple months in and we will have proper root without knox trip hopefully sooner because my flashing finger is getting twitchy ad itchy

It's not that I don't have faith in the developers, but there will come a point where they will be unable to hack security restrictions such as knox. They may not be able to come up with a workaround to prevent blowing the efuse that trips the knox warranty void. This isn't a knock on developers because these guys are very talented. It's just the reality of having interest in a technology that companies are looking to make more secure. The more holes that developers exploit, the more secure android gets. It's the nature of the game.
If you haven't owned a Motorola device any time recently take a peek at their forums. They have those things locked down pretty tight. The Bionic had a locked bootloader, but was able to be rooted. When it received the last ota, djrbliss released a root exploit for it that had to be done in Linux (or a Linux VM). It's not possible to do in Windows. It is my understanding that djrbliss had retired from releasing root exploits because they have become so much more difficult to work around (I think it also had to do with people not paying attention to directions and a sense of entitlement...).
We are lucky because we have a device with an unlocked bootloader. Those with devices on AT&T and Verizon who have locked down devices won't always be so lucky. And we won't be if they continue to increase the level of security for us also.

I just sent the following mesage to Samsung:
"I bought the Note 2 when it first came out in 2012. I would like to replace it with the Note 3. BUT Samsung has made it impossible to reset the flash counter (with Triangle Away for example). So I can not, for example, use the Allshare Cast dongle with a rooted Note 3. This is unacceptable policy. I will not buy another Samsung device (of any kind) until Samsung eliminates this restrictive policy. So there is a $700 sale lost. Multiply that loss by thousands and ask yourselves if you are pursuing the right customer friendly policy with this restriction. "
I ask othes to send a similar message to Samsung. Lets start a Web Boycot over this isue!

No you're not screwed you can return the device to factory rom for warranty return . if you're not willing to learn how to do this simple procedure then don't root but of course root give you so much more functionality . root is really a basic necessity in my opinion and manufacturers should not be preventing this . we pay serious money to own these devices and we should be able to use them as we see fit.

Even if you go back to stock, if you tripped the Knox flag it's not going back to 0x0 that is going to stay 0x1 which displays warranty void.

Exactly. For the hell of it, I flashed back to stock and entered download mode after everything was intact. It read 0x1, which means the warranty is completely void. So I said screw it and am going to return it to T-Mobile. Absolutely ridiculous that my $700 toy has no warranty protection. Not worth it in my book, sorry galaxy fan boys lol.
I will be e-mailing Samsung about this. If the Note 3 didn't have such poor sound out of the box, I wouldn't have to flash a custom rom.

I'll hold off on my root on my new N3. I have faith in Chainfire.
And has nothing to do with "fan boys". The N3 is in incredible piece of hardware. Don't think for a sec this will only stay with Samsung. Soon all mfg's will have this....watch. It's just a matter of time until the talented devs will find a way to get past it. Then, an even better phone (HTC,Sam, etc) will come out with even more of a roadblock.

Is the Knox flag will Tripped even if I didn't install the Knox app? This is the first device I am scared to root it.

Yes you flash anything and it will trip Knox. That being said if all you want is root. Use root De last vega. Be mindful I'd you fish twrp it will trip Knox

Can anyone give me their opinions rooting right away vs waiting? I'm coming from a 2 generation ago HTC with root and unlocked bootloader, s-off. I'd hate to delay rooting but I'm wondering how things have gone lately in the Samsung world.
-If I wait, will there likely be another method of rooting that would somehow be better than Chainfire's current method? (Won't trip knox or void warranty or something along those lines)?
-Would I be better off taking any OTA's that are available upon getting the phone before rooting or could those OTA's prevent root if I take them?
Any other reason why someone might delay rooting?

I personally probably will root it if a method is available (haven't verified yet.)
Primary reason being is to make transferring from my previous phone a lot less painless with titanium backup.
Or maybe I won't, because it won't be long before I'd want to flash a custom debloated rom.

the only reason to wait is you want to maintain your warranty. If you pretty good with figuring out issues, it may not be an issue.
Me, 99% I'm not waiting. If I have time, it''ll be one of the first things I do. If not, I'll do it following day.

I enjoy Samsung devices but they usually leave me no choice but to root to remove some of the bloat that I don't really want. So for me it will happen once a cf auto root occurs!

There is no root for sprint yet. Big freaking bummer.

I wouldn't worry about that at all. Chainfire has already released CF Root for like seven different models of the Note 4 - Exynos and Snapdragon models. I would give it a day or a few after official release of our Note 4 until we have root.
And anyways back to the OP - I will be rooting as soon as I get my phone and charge it to full haha. I'm going to need to erase like a million apk's from /system to get rid of plenty of the carrier and Samsung bloat.

Bah to root, im going to be busy working on recovery, to me thats far more important

as much as im gonna hate moving to a new device not having root i think i am going to hold off on root till a method that does not trip knox is introduced. Or a way to use the samsung dongle with knox tripped is introduced. I don't care about warranty but the limit to use accessories is a game stopper for me. I mean with knox flag stop the VR glasses from working. to many unknowns right now.

It that really true. If the knox is trigger using accessories such as the VR or Galaxy Gear watches won't work? What the heck? I thought knox was introduced by corporate people to have a more secure phone. Although the rooted use is a small portion of people, just seen short sighted to me.

I just rooted everything works good so far, used t-mobile's root with no issues.

I second this. I used T Mobile's root From Chainfire with no problems. All root apps work great. Everything works as it should.

Yep, works fine. TB is restoring my apps as I type this. Just choose "Normal" for SuperSU to update the binary. Don't forget to install the FixSD app to allow the correct writing permissions that they talk about in the T-Mobile forum.

[Q] Should I bother activating my Note 4?

I just got my Verizon Note 4 in the mail today and realized that no one has yet to find a way to root it. Right now I'm using my rooted Verizon Note 2. I'm wondering if I should even bother activating my Note 4 and start using it or should I just hold off and hope someone finds a way to root it in the near future.
What do you guys think?

It's nothing what we think, do what you feel you want. We aren't using the phone, you are, it's ultimately up to you on what you feel you want.
Can you use a phone without root? Can you live without it? Then use the note 4

I came from the note 2 as well and was also disappointed to hear that root has not been achieved yet. To cope I installed nova launcher and tried to tone down touch wiz as much as possible, which has helped tremendously in my opinion. Even without root this phone is ridiculously fast and has insane battery life compared to the note 2. I can go nearly a week with 7 hours of screen on time without charging it using the stock battery. This phone is amazing even without root access, but when it does finally get rooted it will destroy everything else on the market.

Shoot, in ultra-powersaving mode you could probably make it almost 2 weeks!
As was said, do what you feel is best. I can live without root, but I don't like it personally. However, it is STILL even WITHOUT root, better than my Note 3, which I still have. I love my Note 4. Admittedly though, I've got it up for sale to see if I can get any biters to try and mitigate the cost of a developer edition. Either way, I can't wait for that root.

Well I guess my main concern is whether I'm going to get hit with an OTA update without realizing it then find out I can't root anymore. As of now, if I start using the phone with stock kit kat 4.4.4 I should be okay right? I guess worse case scenario I'd just have to reinstall all my apps when the Note 4 root comes out.
So maybe my safest bet is to start using the Note 4 but make sure I keep it at kit kat 4.4.4 the whole time?

There are ways to prevent OTAs without root so youll be safe

I'll say sell it ,buy the DE and call it a year

Only geeks can't live without root LOL pretty much you can do most of the things without root besides adaway

The n4 is the best un-rooted device I have ever owned. With Nova and turned off bloat, this phone is awesome. I haven't regretted buying this phone and it will last me a long time. Good luck

Seconded, I just got my DE

Since Samsung went with a non removable battery and no SD slot with the S6. This could possibly be the last phone with an removable battery and SD slot.

Don't activate it send it back and get a nexus 6 if you want a unlocked bootloader and roms

Yeah that's true. I won't necessarily need to control my cpu speed with setcpu since the Note 4 has 2 power saving modes. There are some older versions of apps I'd like to restore with Titanium backup, and some I'd like to delete with the same program but I guess I can wait until root comes out to do that. I'm gonna miss not having the Freedom app but I'll live.
I do want to install the older version of google maps, the one that had the navigation icon, can I still do that without root?

I looked into the nexus 6. The note 4 still seems like a better phone and the Nexus 6 isn't available for Verizon yet.
Of course if I got the DE version of the Note 4 I'd be set but I really don't feel like dropping $700 on the phone. I just spend $300 to get this with my upgrade.

You know the answer, how important is root to you? If I had known root likely wasn't coming unlike my other notes, I might have waited. It's worth the extra for the de. The camera is amazing, everything works fine, but it's hampered by stock twiz and only you know what that's worth to you.

Root would be amazing. Yes. But this phone is still a beast even without it. Yes I'd love to gain root. Until then I gladly use mine without root.

The first units out up here have a locked bootloader. I would imagine the replacements do too. There was an engineering firmware from Sprint that you could flash to get root, but I'm not sure what happens after you're on it.. i.e. I don't think you can get off of it (at least easily), no recovery, no custom ROMs, etc..
There are a number of users who returned their W8 Note7 and bought a F or FD model, as the Exynos variant has an unlocked bootloader, recovery, root, etc..

I wish. I also have a W8 Note7. So far I've decided to keep it, although it hasn't been exchanged yet (registered, but coral blue and waiting forever). I may sell it and get a F or FD variant once known good ones are easily available.. or may get something else.. who knows..
For reference, see THIS post for the steps about the engineering bootloader/firmware. Feel free to read through that thread, but from everything I've read the bootloader is truly locked on our devices.
Oh, OEM unlock is a feature added in lollipop. As far as I know it's a standard feature and doesn't reflect the actual ability to unlock the bootloader. Disabling it can remove the FRP lock though.. Yes, I do know you need to use that when flashing ROMs, I had a HTC 10, S7 Edge (W8 Exynos model), and many other Androids before, and I rooted every single one of them. This is the first device I haven't, which is why I'm on the fence..

Unlocked bootloader? Dude....where have you been lol?
Ditch the snapdragon and go exynos as mentioned....only way to go with a note 7 if you want the usual root, twrp like the note 5.

Guess I've just assumed it was unlocked. Honestly this phone has been a pain in the ass since I got it, was hoping to fix some things up with root and don't really want to go through the hassle of getting an Exynos version. Where would I grab one from anyway?

Lots of guys got them via ebay, a few of us got them local at a store here in toronto.
Amazon would also be an option

That's not a bad idea. Do you think Bell will refund my replacement Note 7? Also, what store in Toronto, I'm fairly close to there

Can't say about bell....
The store is swiftronics.
I would hold off on buying though until battery gate blows over...they dont have any new stock yet anyway. We are all waiting on them to replace our FD units with updated versions.

Just use the Spring Userdebug root and you will be good to go. Instructions are pretty basic. I have the N930W8 as well. The advantage is that you dont void your warranty or trip knox, but then you are stuck on an unchangablr kernel and cannot flash roms/kernels until someone decides to include the system.img and old kernel in their roms, which would be a lost cause, since maybe 3 people have rooted their canadian note 7's xD
BTW, can anyone help me out with systemui? I flashed the modded systemui that includes rom control, and can no longer use samsungs interaction control, which I absolutely need. Please help me out with possibly a zip I can flash that resets systemui to stock?

You cannot use that on the new firmware for anyone who got the update.
The OP is on a replacement device so he def cannot use it.

I used this on my original Note 7 as well as the replacement.
I got my replacement last friday, the phone was said to be manufactured Sep 6th, but I was definitely able to flash sprints userdebug on my new replacement..
I'm running it now, and its actually doing much better than the older device. Much much snappier and longer lasting.
Then again, you mentioned an update, and I usually avoid such things so I hadnt noticed any update. Could you ellaborate on that please? With some links if you can? ^.^

You must have got the device rooted before it updated....nice one!
The new firmware which gives the fixed devices the green battery icon and bad ones a big fat warning to turn the device in. And in some cases limits the charging to 60% tops.
I have all my update crap turned off so avoided it and some like you got lucky..others the damn phone updated immediately and others it came with the firmware.
You cannot odin the previous firmware either..its blocked. And there is no root for it even on unlocked bootloader devices like my dual sim exynos
Its all over the forums bro, easy to find more info but thats the overview of it.

Whaat thats absolute bull that Samsung would do this.
I'm super thankful I blocked the update services with Package Disabler right away then.. I didnt even intend to do it, but I figured I would just in case. I have to reflash the userdebug again though, theres no way it would auto update right?

It shouldn't especially now that your rooted, im not even rooted but have auto update off and also used package disabler and havent had a hint of an OTA thank god.
I dont like It either but under the circumstances i do understand why they would force an OTA like this.

How come unlocked bootloaders are not rootable?. . There is a dr ketan rom based on safe battery issue

Just managed to reflash sprint userdebug and root again (on the replacement). I was sketching out hard during the setup, saying to myself over and over "oh my god please dont auto update".
Thanks for all your help! Sucks that the Note 7 is essentially dead now, considering only very little people will have a rooted note 7.

Lol.....just now there is....there was not up until when i went to bed last night. Looks like Dr Ketan found a way around it by not having to flash the new bootloader.
This is what our talented developers do...find ways sround samsung screwing us....god bless them :thumbup:
