[Q] Should I get the Note 3?

My Jump! just came up yesterday but was too busy to go swap my device. The only real decent phone that catches my eye and criteria, being it must have an sd slot, is the Note3.
Now I have a few questions regarding this. I currently have the s3 and it's rooted; will I need to unroot and triangleaway before taking it in? I've read some reports that tmo wont care if it's rooted and I don't remember where to find the t999L unroot method.
Furthermore, should I be worried about this KNOX thing? I love flashing and trying new things, because over time I get bored with the same setup. I dont plan to ever go through samsung for replacements as that's why I have tmo insurance and warranties.
from what I've seen, this KNOX thing is just a new problem attracting attention to samsung as most US based phones deal with carriers as far as returns and exchanges, not the actual company. Not to mention android itself is open source.

there are other methods to root. id suggust look through the forum if you can only b.c i cant rmr the name, i think its la something vega or vegas. i came from the htc one so the roms here are so much different.

ty for the replies guys. Should I just wait a month or two before rooting? I played with the handset instore for a little and it doesn't feel like it needs rooting right away.
I'm concerned about KNOX. I don't think I'll have to do any warranty exchanges, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
I'm far too lazy to unroot my s3, so I'm just gonna try and swap it while it's still rooted. if they give me problems I'll just unroot it then take it to another store

I'd wait to root. The phone is so much fun, as it is. And the whole Knox thing is a bother worth avoiding, for now. I could see it being worth rooting if there were reliable KitKat roms with TouchWiz. But there aren't. So why bother, for now?

For me rooting is about debloating the phone. Either by removing bloat or (as i have done with the Note 3) just freeze them for now. This gets a very noticeable increase in battery life. Also some mods can be nice. I like a very clean ROM with optimizations to battery and UI. The Kernel can be optimized too but like a stock kernel usually.
I'm coming from the VZW S4 running CleanROM and Bonestock but right now on the Note 3 I'm Rooted on Stock, with Bloat frozen and getting 7-10% battery drain per hour of screen on time (at 35% brightness) depending on what I'm doing.

i am curious how people like this phone, especially compared to the Note 2 and Galaxy S4. i thought the Note 2 was probably my favorite ever, the stock UI was smooth and battery life was excellent. i used the S4 briefly and found it a bit clunky and laggy with all those fancy features(although battery life seemed excellent).
so, how would you say the Note 3 is in these regards?

Phones awesome. Get it. No downsides whatsoever on this phone, sexy build, power, speed, removeable battery and SD card, great stock battery. Big ass sexy 1080 screen, what more do you really want or need from a phone?

My S4 was fine with the slightest of lag stock out of the box. I have the VZW variant from launch day (May 23rd) and i never took an OTA. With that said the 2 ROMs i used 100% wiped out any remaining lag. My S4 was pretty much perfect for me. The reason I am now on a Note 3 is i took advantage of Tmo paying off ETF. So why not upgrade to the Note 3 instead of making a lateral move?
That said, the Note 3 is AMAZING. It's much snappier and faster. I am Rooted with TWRP but stock ROM with just bloat frozen. It has better battery life and the spen functionality is really good. If you haven't you should really watch some YouTube vids to really see it in action. A 5 inch screen is most ideal but I have large hands so 5.7 is nicer for me as i do consume a lot of content (Youtube, SlingBox, Netflix). This wile still on the stock ROM too. I think anyone coming from the S4 or Note 2 will be very happy and would think of it as a worthy upgrade not a marginal one.

To the op question ~ I'm still torn between my Note 2 and this. The volume on this is so low that Samsung is practically begging you to root this phone just for that.
Tough call imo both are good. I believe you can still get the N2 pre 4.3 and not have to worry about Knox.
Software side its the small things that bug the hell out of me like having a white dialer and not being able to open internet pages in the background. Things like this that are enough to piss off the Pope!

I ended up getting it. I had to go back 3 times because my IMEI didn't reflect my account thru my warranty exchange. Went back today and handed in my s3 still rooted. The first 2 they actually checked if it booted, the 3rd just went ahead and did it. But to be fair he was there the other 2 times and was helping me then too. But they didn't go through any menus or anything to verify if modified or not. Just a 3 point inspection: No water damage, Boots, No cracks in the glass.
playing with it for a while..... Holy **** this thing is fast. I though I had stable quick roms on my s3... this thing just ZOOMS. I managed to lock it up once learning an spen feature, but only a mild hiccup. Aside from that I absolutely LOVE this phone. SO worth the minor 9$ bill increase. I can't wait to see what sammy drops for this. I'm surprised kitkat isn't an ota right now. I see no reason why it can't handle it.

If all my reading is correct Root De La Vega will root without tripping Knox counter to 0x1.... it will stay 0x0 but the CF-auto root i think may trip Knox just with rooting. BUT... if you put any custom recovery on it like TWRP or CWM that will trip the Knox counter to 0x1. Knox is an eFuse, its hardware i believe the eFuse is in the Snapdragon 800 chip.

But do we know for sure? I've done a bit of reading too. And from what I've seen it's truly unknown. Even if so, would Sammy actually tear down that far to validate warranty claims?
Is this root method easily undone? Cuz all I really want to root for is my tibu and ad blockers. I'm content with stock atm

There is talk that it can be reset by Samsung, but nothing specific, I rooted via de la Vega and stayed stock to get some basic access without any issues. Very happy with the phone like it is and have no urge to try other roms.

I think Root De La Vega you're safe but not if you put a custom recovery on. just going to have to read through the post. and others can chime in if they did it that way. I put custom recovery on my phone right away so i just used CF-Auto root so i can't confirm from my experiences.

Everything about the note 3 is superior to the note 2(except audio lol), screen is crisp and brighter, more storage for games and apps, apps2sd is back!!, snapdragon800 soc is friggin insane even tho i do give props to sammys exynos soc, better build quality, better battery life.

YES! I had my Sprint S3 stolen.... so glad I spent my hard earned money to switch to T-Mobile and to get the Note 3. Best choice I made in years!!!

Q: Crucial answers needed before purchase or decide to wait for Note 4

I'm coming off 2 generations of HTC phones and I'm due an upgrade with Sprint. I bypassed on the GS5 and One M8 for various reasons and the G3 seems to fit my needs but I have a few questions first.
1) Root is must. While I know the phone can be rooted, I'm worried about updates afterward. I'm fine with a stock ROM but I need to know that after I root I can still update Android, bug fixes, radios, new features. Can this be done and if so how (only a very basic description is needed, not a guide lol). I've read the the bootloader can not be unlocked so what are limitations associted with that?
2) Will Android "L" and it's ART only runtime work on this phone? If so, I guess that relates to my question #1 if I'm already rooted.
3) Actually, that's really it. The phone looks amazing and I'm ok with it "only" being a snapdragon 801 with the 805 and beyond right around the corner but I need to know that if I root, I'll be able to easily flash new updates as they become available.
Now that the phone is in the wild in the US, are there any clearer answers to my questions? Thank You.

Hi, first of all I would like to say the phone is great, it seems to get some negative comments here but since I got one I have been very happy with my first LG handset.
Ok we'll you can't get ota's after rooting, I haven't received any official updates yet so I'm not sure if we can just full uproot with supersu to get the it a again or not. But flashing a stock firmware is a pretty simple procedure and the kind folks here at xda keep us up to date with all the stock firmware so you can update and then reroot.
ART will run on this phone no problem at all however it seems android L may break root so if root is a must you may be best advised to look into you're updates before hand, which is another advantage of getting you're stock rom's at xda. Would be pretty frustrating to agree to a ota and find out you can no longer root when it's done.
But in short, root is fine on 'nearly' all he variants and flashing stock fw manually is not to much fuss.

It does help a bit. Thank you but I need to have this clear in my head. With HTC, in order to update radios, you needed s-off, which was more than just root. That's what I'm hesitant about here, if I root, and want an update the g3, I have to unroot, update and re root? What if the update prevents root? I don't want to be stuck with a choice of updating or keeping root on a phone that won't be able to stay updated with the latest version and patches of software.
Really, knowing that I'll be able to root, and update firmware, radios and software throughout the life of the phone is the only thing holding me back from an LG G3 or waiting for the note 4 and a probably larger development base. I'd prefer the G3 so I hope it can be assured.

If you're into rooting and flashing custom rooms I would seriously avoid this phone and wait for note 4. Trust me when you get your hands on this phone the first thing you want to do is get rid of the lag. It seriously lags worse then S5. I'm a HTC fan and found the lag really annoying constantly using task manager which I hate doing.
So if you are a rooter and love to flash roms don't buy.

its funny you say that. I looked at the phone today. First thing I thought of when I looked at it was touchwiz. The UI just seemed very laggy. Maybe after all the hype I was just expecting a bit more. Nice phone but didn't "wow" me.

I got my G3 early Thursday from AT&T and I have no complaints thus far. I do notice slight lag from time to time but if you're on XDA and are use to custom slimmed down ROMs then yes, you'll kind of notice it. But trust me, it is far from a deal breaker.
Here's the thing, in a few weeks there will be numerous ROM's that have stripped away the bloatware and added a few tweaks and the lag will be non existent. I already have my phone rooted and have deleted most of the bloatware and added UI tweaks. I barely notice lag and I'm actually enjoying the UI.
This is just my 2 cents. And being loyal Samsung customer for years I can honestly say I prefer LG 's new UI over touchwiz any day.

I rooted with ioroot, deleted all useless apps and froze others that I don't use with titanium backup.
I still have some lag but nothing that is driving me crazy by any means. The only time it lagged for me was when I used the LG health screen and I think the photo gallery. I turned off the health screen and I've always use QuickPic instead of stock gallery. Most my lag is gone but not all.

i am a note2/note3 owner that now has the LG G3 the note 3 was the worst phone i have ever owned. So far am liking the LG G3 root will come shortly.

How is the Note 3 the worse phone ever? I note 3 on both VZW and AT&T using KK. Both work great. Personally much better than my Note 1 & 2. I don't have any lag. I did order the LG 3 to replace my VZW Note 3. My only complaint with the Note 3 is horrible pictures when it does its "processing" garbage.

I believe that has to do with software OIS from within the camera app options. You can turn this off

I have a little girl and did not get one photo I was happy with. Worst phone ever!
In addition it was the first time I couldn't run aosp

is the att version locked down like the note 3?

The note 3 is a great piece of hardware but it was a nightmare for devs I hope they backtrack on that with this one. Not getting my hopes up though.

Of course it will be locked down!!! Us consumers never really OWN our phone that WE purchase!!! So tired of AT&T and others. I sure hope Geohot can bring us some towelroot

Root took a long time for the note 3 but in the end the real fight was and still is the bootloaders. No custom kernels means even with root all you get is basically a bunch of differently themed semi customized stock Roms to play with

That's right. I gave up my AT&T note 3 for T-Mobile S5 just for the unlocked bootloader. Although I really would like to see the bootloader unlocked, I can kinda live without unlocked bootloader if I have at least root. I will no longer buy a phone if I can't at least get root. I always wait until root has been achieved before making any purchase. Gotta love HTC for not locking down, but I just don't like their phones that much.

99.999% sure the ATT version will have a locked bootloader. This means it will always be a cat and mouse game with root.
My advice is to wait and not pre-order anything yet. Let the dust settle and see which device will work for you and have root available.
1. You have to ask yourself how long do you normally keep phones? Can you afford to wait 6 months or more (or never if you accidentally take an update) for root on an ATT device you are going to have for 1-2 years?
2. The Tmobile version will most likely have an unlocked bootloader which means you never have to worry about root. It will also most likely work on ATT like the GS5 and the Note3 before it and it will have updates long after Tmobile and Samsung stop supporting it.
If you have Tmobile in your area and you want root it really is the best way to go and cheaper. Why not give them a try? The next best is a Tmobile device on ATT, and third, well.... forget about root.

I have the same very question.
Being on ATT, will the Note 4 be able to be Rooted, and even more important, allow Custom Recovery for ROM's ? If not, NO WAY I can get the Note 4. And Safestrap is not an option, that's a handicapped and gimped wannabe recovery.
Nice thing with HTC, they openly and officially allow their One M8 to have the bootloader unlocked directly through HTC's own website. I did just that with my ATT carrier One M8, and converted it to a GPE. Would like to see Samsung allow that too.

Without a doubt it will be locked.

Ikr! I had T-Mobile but we moved a few years back to an area where they don't have service really at all. I wish I could let them pay my termination fees and bring my four lines there I would save money too. Oh well..

Get the Tmobile device instead and use it on ATT. Don't be pulled in by the ATT Next hype\propaganda either. You still pay full price for the device. Why not get one that you actually own.

Yeah I know I'm not falling for the next plan and all that crap not interested in adding more to my monthly bill. I thought about getting the T-Mobile version but I'm starting to just lean towards getting a nexus from google when the new one comes out. Hate to leave Samsung behind but I'm feeling like the time has come to move on

1. You have to ask yourself how long do you normally keep phones? Can you afford to wait 6 months or more (or never if you accidentally take an update) for root on an ATT device you are going to have for 1-2 years?
2. The Tmobile version will most likely have an unlocked bootloader which means you never have to worry about root. It will also most likely work on ATT like the GS5 and the Note3 before it and it will have updates long after Tmobile and Samsung stop supporting it.
If you have Tmobile in your area and you want root it really is the best way to go and cheaper. Why not give them a try? The next best is a Tmobile device on ATT, and third, well.... forget about root.

Not a good idea. If you want the phone, go get it now. I remember very well that after someone root the HTC phone with s-off, they make it not rootable with it being s-off. It took many months and ransom money for hacker to find it get rid of the s-off.

Very, very bad advise. You are basically advising people to buy and hope that an exploit will be found, and it's a bad gamble at most. Have you gotten any recent Samsung phones? We aren't talking HTC here. Look at the Note 3, Galaxy S4 and S5 history. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy the phone. I'm saying you should not pre-order it or get it on day one. With the Tmobile note 3 it took a week and a half after release to confirm that it had an unlocked bootloader. At that point a custom recovery was ODIN flashable and root was forever available. It was even faster to confirm that the ATT version was locked down and as of today the bootloader has NEVER been cracked! No CM or AOSP! Only stock kernels are usable. The same with the ATT S5. The bootloader is still locked down. Root has been obtained through an exploit that has since been patched. So if you take an update you are screwed. A bootloader exploit for the latest samsung devices has not been found for the ATT S4, S5, and Note 3 for 1.5 years now.

better advice! But you can certainly blindly guarantee that at&t is locked down.

Am I wanting Root for wrong reasons?
I have been rooting and installing custom ROMS for a few years now. All Samsung phones.
I'm growing tired of custom ROMS. While some are very solid, I have not tried any at all that don't have one problem or another. So, I'm hoping I can be satisfied with just rooting and maybe even staying on TW. I'll be trying to analyze the features I'd lose from Nova if I stay on TW, vs the TW features of the Note 4 I'd lose by going to Nova.
But my main question is do I really NEED root? I'm thinking I want it in order to do true backups (with more concern about data than backing up apps). I am of the impression that data backups may not be possible w/o root. True? Or, depending on App? I know that TIBU seems to want root...I've never tried to use TIBU w/o root.
Also, I use other apps that seem to work better with root, ie. Lightflow, TIBU, Tasker (a must), ES File Explorer, Gravity Box, Notification Shortcuts, Utter, Widget Locker, and others I suppose.
Seems to me I NEED root. Am I misinformed?
Maybe the T-Mobile version of the Note 4 is what I should look for.

Don't forget adaway, my number 1 use for root, and ya you should be looking at the tmo note. That's coming from someone who did it on the 3rd gen note.

I'll probably look into that. I typically take advantage of subsidy, but may be worth going with TMO. If the Note 4 had 4GB mem, that would make it easier to make the extra spend. I was hoping for a phone that I may be happy with for longer than 2 years. (Of course the root issue may be the driving factor for purchasing the TMO version, irrespective of other considerations).

Totally agree with you on all points. Except not sure we "have to root". The Note 4 will be able to handle all "Bloatware" and still fly. Koush's Helium does a good job backing up apps/data. No Nandroid, but if you are not rooting and running the risk of soft bricking and needing to restore a Nandroid, they won't be needed. The cloud for Google will always be there to restore those accounts. The rest you can backup to your sdcard and pc. Not sure I need theming like Xposed offers. As, I am liking the stock look of the S5 which I am running on my S4.
That all being said I would probably get a TMO one on ATT if LTE runs fine and root/flash roms since it is in the blood at this point--

Glad you posted this. I had not heard of Helium. I'll have to check it out.
One thing I like to be able to do is backup and restore just data. I'll have to see if that can be done. It's interesting that it doesn't require root, when everything else does.

Just went to Play Store, and leaves me a bit confuse. The instructions are a bit confusing, as 1a says "Root user? You're done", then goes on to say to install on the PC, which implies to me if non-rooted, you must do backups to PC.
I'll go and read the Wiki.

You can try MyBackUp Pro from Play Store--Have used it for years. Assuming it updates for Note 4--sure it will. You can email them--

So i know AT&T and Verizon users are not able to root their devices at this point! Has it ever been like this for devices Like S4,S5,Note 3 etc?.... If so, did they take a long time to get rooted too?....

bootloaders have started to be locked down more over time on att/vzn but nothing major till of late. the s5 is actually rooted already, so only the note 4 is left. if the note 4 never gets root it'll be the first major flagship to go rootless.

I remember the s4 was out for about 2 months before we got root by having a bootloader patch tricking it (loki) but shortly after it was updated over for the later of bootloader phones...now they use run safestrap and still can't get any non TouchWiz rom I was one of the lucky ones who froze the updater apps before they automatically pushed it

I think you may be confusing root with unlocked bootloader. root was achieved before the phone even came out, the bootloader wasnt unlocked till a week or two after, but wasn't released so Verizon couldn't patch it yet. that way verizon ppl could have an unlocked bootloader on their phone as well.
root has ALWAYS been something we had.
I dislike locked bootloaders, but can get over it, root is just so **** necessary for BASIC functionality..

what I dont get is why more manufacturers wont take a page out of HTC's (or was it Moto?) book and allow people to unlock the bootloader from a website. If you agree to void the warranty, why not allow people to do that...

this. i've been holding off on the note4 to see when root arrives. if root doesn't come out before nex6 release i'm going to have to jump ship...which is too bad...would lose functionality going that route but lack of root trumps all else...

Same here. Of course I would prefer being able to root it, but I think I could deal with the scenario of that not happening ever, I really like this phone that much!

It's been great even without root, but there are just a couple things I'd like to change. For example I hate the emojis on here (prefer the standard hangouts emoji) and I could easily fix that with root. Other than that I can live with the phone as is. I do miss some Xposed modules though

The things I'm missing that require root:
Titanium Backup
AdAway
Being able to modify my DPI
Avast Anti-Theft
Pretty sure there's more but those are what I can think of off the top of my head...

I'd like to have those options as well but, like the others have stated, I like this phone so much that I could easily get used to not having root. I pledged and hope someone finds an exploit but I am loving this phone as is.

yea im in the same boat as a lot of people who need root for Ti Backup so all my game saves and what not... kinda a bummer.... I guess ill have to wait a bit longer for the upgrade... or maybe pick up a S5 instead...

Hey all, does anyone have a link to a guide to root the Canadian Note 7 (SM-N930W8) - Snapdragon model.

The first units out up here have a locked bootloader. I would imagine the replacements do too. There was an engineering firmware from Sprint that you could flash to get root, but I'm not sure what happens after you're on it.. i.e. I don't think you can get off of it (at least easily), no recovery, no custom ROMs, etc..
There are a number of users who returned their W8 Note7 and bought a F or FD model, as the Exynos variant has an unlocked bootloader, recovery, root, etc..

I wish. I also have a W8 Note7. So far I've decided to keep it, although it hasn't been exchanged yet (registered, but coral blue and waiting forever). I may sell it and get a F or FD variant once known good ones are easily available.. or may get something else.. who knows..

Oh, OEM unlock is a feature added in lollipop. As far as I know it's a standard feature and doesn't reflect the actual ability to unlock the bootloader. Disabling it can remove the FRP lock though.. Yes, I do know you need to use that when flashing ROMs, I had a HTC 10, S7 Edge (W8 Exynos model), and many other Androids before, and I rooted every single one of them. This is the first device I haven't, which is why I'm on the fence..

Ditch the snapdragon and go exynos as mentioned....only way to go with a note 7 if you want the usual root, twrp like the note 5.

Guess I've just assumed it was unlocked. Honestly this phone has been a pain in the ass since I got it, was hoping to fix some things up with root and don't really want to go through the hassle of getting an Exynos version. Where would I grab one from anyway?

The store is swiftronics.
I would hold off on buying though until battery gate blows over...they dont have any new stock yet anyway. We are all waiting on them to replace our FD units with updated versions.

Just use the Spring Userdebug root and you will be good to go. Instructions are pretty basic. I have the N930W8 as well. The advantage is that you dont void your warranty or trip knox, but then you are stuck on an unchangablr kernel and cannot flash roms/kernels until someone decides to include the system.img and old kernel in their roms, which would be a lost cause, since maybe 3 people have rooted their canadian note 7's xD
BTW, can anyone help me out with systemui? I flashed the modded systemui that includes rom control, and can no longer use samsungs interaction control, which I absolutely need. Please help me out with possibly a zip I can flash that resets systemui to stock?

I used this on my original Note 7 as well as the replacement.
I got my replacement last friday, the phone was said to be manufactured Sep 6th, but I was definitely able to flash sprints userdebug on my new replacement..
I'm running it now, and its actually doing much better than the older device. Much much snappier and longer lasting.
Then again, you mentioned an update, and I usually avoid such things so I hadnt noticed any update. Could you ellaborate on that please? With some links if you can? ^.^

You must have got the device rooted before it updated....nice one!
The new firmware which gives the fixed devices the green battery icon and bad ones a big fat warning to turn the device in. And in some cases limits the charging to 60% tops.
I have all my update crap turned off so avoided it and some like you got lucky..others the damn phone updated immediately and others it came with the firmware.
You cannot odin the previous firmware either..its blocked. And there is no root for it even on unlocked bootloader devices like my dual sim exynos
Its all over the forums bro, easy to find more info but thats the overview of it.

I'm super thankful I blocked the update services with Package Disabler right away then.. I didnt even intend to do it, but I figured I would just in case. I have to reflash the userdebug again though, theres no way it would auto update right?

It shouldn't especially now that your rooted, im not even rooted but have auto update off and also used package disabler and havent had a hint of an OTA thank god.
I dont like It either but under the circumstances i do understand why they would force an OTA like this.

Just managed to reflash sprint userdebug and root again (on the replacement). I was sketching out hard during the setup, saying to myself over and over "oh my god please dont auto update".
Thanks for all your help! Sucks that the Note 7 is essentially dead now, considering only very little people will have a rooted note 7.

Lol.....just now there is....there was not up until when i went to bed last night. Looks like Dr Ketan found a way around it by not having to flash the new bootloader.
This is what our talented developers do...find ways sround samsung screwing us....god bless them :thumbup:
