[Q] Root imediately or wait? - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone give me their opinions rooting right away vs waiting? I'm coming from a 2 generation ago HTC with root and unlocked bootloader, s-off. I'd hate to delay rooting but I'm wondering how things have gone lately in the Samsung world.
-If I wait, will there likely be another method of rooting that would somehow be better than Chainfire's current method? (Won't trip knox or void warranty or something along those lines)?
-Would I be better off taking any OTA's that are available upon getting the phone before rooting or could those OTA's prevent root if I take them?
Any other reason why someone might delay rooting?

I personally probably will root it if a method is available (haven't verified yet.)
Primary reason being is to make transferring from my previous phone a lot less painless with titanium backup.
Or maybe I won't, because it won't be long before I'd want to flash a custom debloated rom.
Decisions decisions...

the only reason to wait is you want to maintain your warranty. If you pretty good with figuring out issues, it may not be an issue.
Me, 99% I'm not waiting. If I have time, it''ll be one of the first things I do. If not, I'll do it following day.

I enjoy Samsung devices but they usually leave me no choice but to root to remove some of the bloat that I don't really want. So for me it will happen once a cf auto root occurs!

There is no root for sprint yet. Big freaking bummer.

I wouldn't worry about that at all. Chainfire has already released CF Root for like seven different models of the Note 4 - Exynos and Snapdragon models. I would give it a day or a few after official release of our Note 4 until we have root.
And anyways back to the OP - I will be rooting as soon as I get my phone and charge it to full haha. I'm going to need to erase like a million apk's from /system to get rid of plenty of the carrier and Samsung bloat.

Bah to root, im going to be busy working on recovery, to me thats far more important

as much as im gonna hate moving to a new device not having root i think i am going to hold off on root till a method that does not trip knox is introduced. Or a way to use the samsung dongle with knox tripped is introduced. I don't care about warranty but the limit to use accessories is a game stopper for me. I mean with knox flag stop the VR glasses from working. to many unknowns right now.

It that really true. If the knox is trigger using accessories such as the VR or Galaxy Gear watches won't work? What the heck? I thought knox was introduced by corporate people to have a more secure phone. Although the rooted use is a small portion of people, just seen short sighted to me.

I just rooted everything works good so far, used t-mobile's root with no issues.

Confirmed. The root located below seems to work on our Sprint phones.
http://download.chainfire.eu/571/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root-trltetmo-trltetmo-smn910t.zip
I'm hoping I can download the full ROM before I start whacking up my system.

So I imagine this root method will trip knox right?

Yep, works fine. TB is restoring my apps as I type this. Just choose "Normal" for SuperSU to update the binary. Don't forget to install the FixSD app to allow the correct writing permissions that they talk about in the T-Mobile forum.

Towelroot should absolutely work with the Tab S. We just need to find the correct modstring that will work. When I receive mine on Wednesday, I'll start working on root.
And it will not completely brick. If it doesn't work with towelroot the tab will just restart. EVEN if it soft bricks you can reset with Odin.

If you're brave enough with tripping KNOX, you may request ChainFire to make one.
Funny thing, I dreamt last night I tried a towelroot modstring and it worked! Lol. I want root though, Knox or no knox, it's usually 5th first thing I do with my devices and I feel so limited now without it. No titanium backup, no Tasker etc. I don't need custom roms, I just need root to customize my tablet!
Had there been any progress on this? I know we have root but this doesn't trip Knox (supposedly)
nothing yet and although i dont care about knox i do like updates and until i see some more devs active for my 10.5 i am hesitant to go the other route. i really just want root to have Xposed and a few apps that i havent missed enough yet to make the move.

Have an iPad Air, bought Tab S 8.4 as a trial run for two weeks. Besides not being able to root (without tripping knox), this tablet is amazing. The screen destroys the Air IMO. I was worried about them going with their in house processor, but after using it next to the iPad Air, I can say with confidence this tablet has power. I am shocked though, coming from ios to Android to see google locking things down so much. I hope someone roots this fine device without tripping knox, because I will gladly keep it and sell my ipad. Love the XDA Devs!!
ps: either way, I have to return this unit, as it is suffering slightly from the heat warp flaw.

[Q] General question about rooting history?

So i know AT&T and Verizon users are not able to root their devices at this point! Has it ever been like this for devices Like S4,S5,Note 3 etc?.... If so, did they take a long time to get rooted too?....
it seems AT&T and Verizon pay more to their software developers to make this harder for everyone!!!!....
in short; no.
bootloaders have started to be locked down more over time on att/vzn but nothing major till of late. the s5 is actually rooted already, so only the note 4 is left. if the note 4 never gets root it'll be the first major flagship to go rootless.
I remember the s4 was out for about 2 months before we got root by having a bootloader patch tricking it (loki) but shortly after it was updated over for the later of bootloader phones...now they use run safestrap and still can't get any non TouchWiz rom I was one of the lucky ones who froze the updater apps before they automatically pushed it

I think you may be confusing root with unlocked bootloader. root was achieved before the phone even came out, the bootloader wasnt unlocked till a week or two after, but wasn't released so Verizon couldn't patch it yet. that way verizon ppl could have an unlocked bootloader on their phone as well.
root has ALWAYS been something we had.
I dislike locked bootloaders, but can get over it, root is just so **** necessary for BASIC functionality..
what I dont get is why more manufacturers wont take a page out of HTC's (or was it Moto?) book and allow people to unlock the bootloader from a website. If you agree to void the warranty, why not allow people to do that...

Same here. Of course I would prefer being able to root it, but I think I could deal with the scenario of that not happening ever, I really like this phone that much!
It's been great even without root, but there are just a couple things I'd like to change. For example I hate the emojis on here (prefer the standard hangouts emoji) and I could easily fix that with root. Other than that I can live with the phone as is. I do miss some Xposed modules though
The things I'm missing that require root:
Titanium Backup
AdAway
Being able to modify my DPI
Avast Anti-Theft
Pretty sure there's more but those are what I can think of off the top of my head...

Dude, how many threads you going to post this in? It's old news - Tmobile got access to a leaked engineering bootloader a while ago. That engeneering bootloader is something that has to be leaked, not something can be developed. In fact Samsung themselves reached out to xda to have those leaked files removed (check their root thread). Sprint will not betting access to a Sprint engineering bootloader. It's just not going to happen.
I do believe that sprint has one for the same reason t-mobile has one (repairs). If we collectively shmooz the sprint repair shops, we might find one, no?

Thoughts on Android Pay?
Has anybody been looking at Google's Android pay? Should be for a larger number of phones, I'd be more likely to use this than a Samsung solution.
I bring it up because it makes the issue of tripping Knox irrelevant, at least to me.

The thing is.... Android Pay relies on NFC, so the vendors have to implement that. Samsung Pay works anywhere without any extra vendor implementation.

The current means of gaining root is to use a custom kernel. Installing that kernel, any kernel other than stock, trips Knox. So at this time any rooted device has tripped Knox and unrooting won't change that.

I've heard that its basically impossible to downgrade to 5.0.2 if you've upgraded. So basically anyone who upgraded to 5.1.1 is stuck? Is it just a waiting game now and hoping for a lucky break on 5.1.1 to find/develop a kernel that won't trip knox?

How is root less secure? People who have root are more cautious they won't fall for the regular virus tricks, they will probably use adaway which will block viruses, and they will get security patches faster.
And if Samsung isn't convinced by this they should at least open the MST hardware to third party developers so they can make their own payment solutions.
Another thing Samsung could do is allow people who tripped knox but reverted back to stock to use Samsung Pay. Imagine buying a phone on ebay with tripped knox and not being able to use a advertised feature.

I have to agree. Having root doesn't mean my phone isn't secure. In addition, how can I use root to magically make a purchase without taking money out of an account?
If Samsung is worried about someone else making a root app to access my accounts, then that is my own fault. I still should be allowed to use a feature on my phone. I don't like how they think they have the right to tell me what I can and can't do with my 700 dollar device. It's MY device. I'm responsible for anything that happens to it. Period.

I see that the root methods for the firmware I have trip knox and from what I see the biggest gripe is it disables Samsung pay. I don't plan on using this but do want to use my banking apps and wonder if tripping knox will cause the app to not work? is this the only down side besides voiding my warranty?
thank you for any help and im glad to be back on the android side already and ive only had my device for a few hours

To root or not to root

I'm an old school always root crack flasher from years ago. The new security and customization options have made this less possible and less necessary, of course. I was happy to see someone had rooted the s4. I picked up the sm-t837v and I've been happy without root, but I'm beginning to wonder. Can someone spell out why root for this tab is a benefit and what it may cost me to do so?
Pie is expected to hit next month, so I can either root or update and be happy (assuming they won't be able to root pie)
Thanks

I kind of regret rooting my Tab S4! Android has become so awesome, root is not really needed, unless you plan to run custom Roms or kernels.
I kind of rushed into rooting my Tab S4! Not really looking into what I usually root for! See the reason I would root for was YouTube background play back! But now we got YouTube Vanced for that! And if you want to block ads system wide Adhell 3 is awesome for that i found all this out after i rooted yeah i know lol
Plus now Samsung give us Good lock so there is some customization available themeing icons etc. see it all depends on your needs but I strongly advise you not to root! as secure folder dont work and it messes up Knox 0x1 so you cant really run Adhell 3! But i am guessing there as Adhell 3 does run on the Knox framework, but i have tripped Knox!
I've always rooted for a couple of specific things, but it's getting harder to get a decent device that you can root without breaking key things.
Things I need root for: Ad blocker, Titanium Backup, access to the Google Authenticator private keys so I can restore my 23 different 2FA configs without having to reset them all. And on my toy tablet, a memory editor.
On my phone I use tasker and some of the features I use are only available with root. I'm going to cry when I can't root my next device but I'm fully expecting rooting of a decent device to become a thing of the past. Samsung at one time was supportive of rooting, but not anymore. My S8 is rooted, and I gladly gave up 20% of the battery charge to do it, but I have a few other major glitches as a result.

I appreciate this post. I have always rooted all devices and was ready to root my Tab S4 also until I read this and looked into Adhell 3. Did some research and was able to build my own apk and get Adhell running on my Tab S4. I have the rooted version of Vanced on my phone, havent tried the non root version on my Tab S4 yet though, that will be my next step. I still may end up rooting in the future but figured I'd check out some of these non root options before tripping knox with twrp.
