Does anyone know of any way to enable the knock on and knock code unlock while using custom roms or does it need to be built into the rom being used?

It must be built in to the Kernel and it must be a feature of the device you are using. Your question is very vague though.

My apologies if I were overly vague, the G3 has a feature called a knock code, allows you to unlock and turn on the phones screen without having to hit the power button. You answered my question well enough thoigh, I assumed the phones ability to detect touches while the screen was off would be a kernel level feature. The lock screen itself though I was not sure if it would be a separate apk utilizing that hardware feature.

Face Unlock is improved in the JB ROM. It has a "Liveness check" you must blink at the phone to unlock
Does anyone really use face unlock? lol It seems like such a useless feature, unless you are really that paranoid about keeping your device secure.

I think you have that backwards.
If you are paranoid, you wouldn't be using it.

It also appears to be tweakable.

I use it because it's faster than swiping a pattern or punching in a pin. I just look at the phone, then it unlocks
Does it use the light meter yet to skip directly to the secondary unlock method in the dark?

It is not creating short cut, but Knock Code is to wake up and unlock ( with your unique knocking pattern) from black screen. I am using Oppo Find 7 now, it has the two tab to wake up , but still have to unlock to achieve security, but the LG doing two thing in one....
Anyone please......
u cant
It's kernel level functions. It's not possible.

can only be activated under the lockscreen settings. select unlock method and you should see a whole list of methods including the knockcode feature.

Okay thank you very much I'll stay on AndroidNow for now
Also to note is that most phones using knock code required xposed framework which is no longer supported in lollipop. They also didn't work while screen was off... So I'm guessing it may never happen to the extent you want it too.

What? Knock-on code works great on v20F/5.0/Lollipop without Xposed, or even without root. It's a feature that LG implented in their ROMs, it has nothing to do with root/xposed etc..
And it does work on a rooted device running a stock(-based) ROM with the screen turned off.
I meant phones running Knock Code that are not LG.... Sorry if that wasn't clear enough.
Knock code was a module within xposed framework to allow knock code on NON LG devices but only with screen on.

There is a line of code that needs to be changed prior to building AOSP. I have a build where it is working but the feature is a bit buggy itself. Haven't found any other way to enable it.
