Build quality of the Asus Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

This weekend I was playing Goat Simulator. Yes, I laughed my ass off with this game.
But... My tablet got very hot, on the top next to the camera.
After a few minutes of playing the Nexus crashed and gave purple stripes on the screen. Nexus tried to reboot but failed a few times.
After 5 minuten of rebooting and resetting the tablet came back to life. After some browsing and another game of Goat Simulator the tablet broke down on me.
Screen went off and the Nexus cannot be started anymore. The battery was half full (55%).
Probably the Graphics chip or processor that melted down...
This is the 2nd time my Nexus need to go for a repair in half a year. Got my Nexus 2014-11-03.
First time I had red dots in my screen and they replaced the screen for me.
Do you guys have such problems with the Nexus of is it just me?

Are you overclocking or something?

Nope, I have kids that use mine and abuse it. They leave like 10 games on in the background and play games all the time..never any over heating.
Mine is all stock.

Hmmmm, maybe you should talk to Google about that kind of stuff(Or Asus), Probably just a manufacturing defect. I know mine didn't have any problems in the first place and most people I know with a nexus 7 don't have this kind of trouble, so just see what the big guy's will do about it. If they can't do anything, you can decide from there

No OC'ing here.
Using CleanRom which is Stock Rom with some (minor) improvements for stability.
The Nexus 7 has been sent to Asus repair again.
Hopefully it gets fixed soon.
Thanks for the replies guys!

Maybe you should try factory reset and stock rom.

The Nexus cannot be turned on anymore.
It's dead. Attaching it to the computer does not give any sign of life at all.
The tablet is at Asus repair now.

i saw a lot of people who use Asus Nexus 7 2013 have problems with their tab.
Hope Google will cooperate with better manufactures , such as Samsung, Lg, HTC., Sony ...

My Nexus 7 2014 is first batch and more than one year old.
NOT a tiny tiny problem.
In this case, should I say Asus has the best build quality, According to the previous of the thread do?
I had HTC one yellow screen, send back to repaired.
Lg optimus g speaker problem, rma,
Galaxy s4 bad gps, sent back to factory and exchanged.....
Come on people. Issues happens. Manufacturers make millions of phone /tablet everyday. Even 99.99%of them are good, there are hundreds of bad ones. And don't forget to blame yourself. We already see lots of guys break their phones glass.
Be cool and get RMA.
It is not anyone 's role to judge build quality for just one or two tabs. Not you. Not me.

My first 2013 nexus died after a few months. Google has an amazing warranty process though and they replaced it in days.
I've had the replacement for many months and it is perfect so far. I don't have any issues with build quality.
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app

I'm not judging the quality. I was just asking around if there are more people with the same problems.
It's being repaired as we speak so hopefully I will get it back soon. :d

I hear ya mate. My first one did die on me after a few months. So far no problems with this one.

Sometimes I Really Hate Samsung

Usually not, but damn. Last week my original GNex had it's radio's take a dump. After 11 solid months, I rebooted one night and had data, but voice never came back. So I put everything back stock and walked into Verizon and paid $15 to have a replacement overnighted to me.
Now, a week later, I've come to the conclusion that my replacement is fubared. I've never seen a device experience sleep of death + turning into an oven so quickly and consistently before. It's good for 30, maybe 60 minutes tops before it craps out. This is awesome when your phone is your alarm clock.
So here I go again, getting ready to waltz back into the Verizon store and do the same song and dance again. Pay $15, get a phone on Tuesday, probably have something massively wrong, rinse and repeat. Hey, devices take a crap from time to time, and luckily mine did while still under warranty, but I'm taking picks on how many replacement units I have to go through before one finally sticks.
My guess is the 3rd replacement is a charm. Who wants the over?
Those of you who have gone through the replacement fiasco with Samsung, how many tries did it take you to get a good one?
Why do you pay when you have still warranty?

Shipping to have it overnighted. It's also awesome that my local store doesn't toss out loaner phones while you wait (It'd make it easy to avoid that whole shipping thing). Maybe I'll call Verizon Tech Support just to bug them about.
no issues at all with mine...
I love Samsung personally
OOOh, free overnight shipping. Thanks Big Red!
Hopefully the next one is a charm because honestly, I don't know what I'd do without a Nexus device on Verizon's network. The alternatives make me cringe.
why is there no option for none
Read the last line of the OP.
I'm just curious to know if getting bum replacements is a "normal" thing because for a phone that went through a "100 point inspection", well, they dropped the ball on this one.

Getting my third in the mail tomorrow Last one had ridiculous sensitivity issues, we'll see what the next one brings.
And why don't you just call em up instead of going in to the store? I keep my phone and they send me a refurb in the mail. The first phone was USPS, but after that one was crap they began overnighting it via FedEx.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I went through 4 before I got my refurb, then I promptly sold it for a GSM model. That's one thing that I have to hand it to Verizon for, they were really good once I got the 1st defective one. I had 4 at one time, most overnighted at no cost and no fees or holds.
They did try everything they could to not send me one though... Unlike Google who were more then happy to send me multiple N7's.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I had to replace one because of dirt under the screen even though its new and heat issues, the replacement was perfect and never get hot under normal use. I also bought one recently and it has heat issue and poor screen as well, but I'll live with it for the price. Its sort of a luck thing with this device, especially a lottery with AMOLED screen. I was going to get the N4 but it seem to also have lots of little issues on its own, such as getting too hot, I really hate phones getting overheat.I'm still waiting on confirmation on the USB OTG too.
After reading this it makes me think I need to bug Asurion tomorrow, I had to get an insurance replacement so I have to go through them for warranty now, they are definitely more strict on some things but like 3 minutes of complaining about signal got me a new one once already. The current one gets EXTREMELY hot under even normal use, so hot that it is uncomfortable to hold and definitely would be uncomfortable up against your face.

The first time I went in, I was hoping that they'd have one in the back they could swap out for me, or a loaner phone (fat chance, I know). My job pretty much requires a working cell phone. I'm kind of surprised that Verizon was so willing to send a replacement out in just a few minutes. Granted, I don't know what alternative they'd have. There's no real way to troubleshoot SOD issues. My main concern is just not having to go through a massive fiasco running through multiple devices, especially with an 8 day vacation coming up.

Well, if it's still under warranty, I'd jump on it.
Let's see... My first nexus has a seriously bad screen. I shipped it out the same day I got it. Got my replacement (#2) and the screen was worse than the first one. So I sent that bad and got another one (#3). This one had the same issue as OP. Radios wouldn't work....no voice or data and the phone got really hot. Enough to where I couldn't hold it to my face. So I sent that one in and they sent me a Samsung Stratosphere (#4 replacement). Sent that in and got the nexus I currently have making 5 replacements (4 with nexuses). I also went through Verizon...
Good luck
I had to replace one about ~8 months ago for screen ghosting. I was really satisfied with the replacement until now because the ghosting is back on the replacement. I'm contemplating switching to T-Mobile though, so I dunno if I'm going to attempt to replace this one.

Well that sucks. My screens have been great. Well, that, or I'm not picky. The second replacement seems rock solid so far. Good data speeds, strong signal, solid screen, solid GPS and no SOD/Overheating. Maybe I've lucked out...but I'm not uncrossing my fingers.
I've been through 5+ Nexi already. Tec Asurion is totally worth the $6.99 per month! Free overnight shipping FTW.
Well, so much for Replacement #2. I highly doubt it's the sim card.

[Q] Why so many issues with this generation Nexus 7?

I remember there being some issues with last year's model as well, but luckily our unit was okay.
Just as the Nexus 7 was announced, I was already scheduled to be in New York as of tomorrow until the 6th (I live in Canada), and the device would be shipped to my grandparent's house. The device is there and waiting for me tomorrow.
I worry because if my unit has some sort of defect, there isn't any Best Buy nearby where I would be able to exchange the unit (32GB).
Is there a great likelihood of there being something wrong, or it just seems like the majority of devices are defective since those are the people that post their defects? Also, what options do I have to resolve the problem if there does happen to be something wrong?
The things I plan on looking for are:
-Random coloured pixels
-Dead Pixels
-Dust under screen
Any others that aren't as obvious?
Thank you for the input!
Some people also reported that there's a jumpy multitouch issue. Personally, I don't see this on my Nexus 7 so YMMV.
I have no issues with mine, and I'm assuming most are Ok. You've got to consider those with serious issues are likely the minority, just people aren't making threads when they have a perfect tab, just those with defects. If you do have a defect, ship it back for another from whomever you purchased it from.

If people didn't tel you, you wouldn't know any better and be on your merry way. My 2012 N7 creaks a little when you squeeze it, but I wouldn't have noticed it if no one told me. Ditto on the lens rattle on the N4.
Buy it, go home, and enjoy it in ignorance.
I have no issues with mine; I'm a very happy camper indeed. Part of me wants to say that there are a good number of hurt iPad mini users trolling these boards looking for issues and then magnifying them. Right now Android has a big target on it's back from iSheep and WP fanbois. But of course there is a chance of getting dead pixels, bad displays or lint under the screen. It happens to me all the time no matter if it's Android or iOS devices. But this time it's different because now Apple/WP fans are the underdogs while Android is the king. And every wants to kill a king.

Mine rebooted randomly a few times as well. Haven't updated to latest version though. I personally wouldn't risk exchanging it because you risk worse hardware, and the reboots should only be a software issue. Perhaps you could try a factory reset? Or updating to latest version if haven't already done so.
I've been lucky with this one, but Asus is the real issue here. They consistently have QC problems with their tablets.
I had no problems with the 2012 Nexus 7 and I have no issues (yet) with this version.

Maybe it's expectations of perfection and anything less is considered an issue? Some are genuine but then again,a stuck/dead pixel happens on lcd monitors all the time, yet it doesn't get reported as often as something that gets people as excited as the N7 has. Same with laptops.

But I only just got my LGOG

I picked up my OG used on eBay for $160 a month ago. I had minimal expectations. I shattered my GS3 and with no warranty and a full year of contract left before my upgrade I needed something affordable and still high-end-ish. I settled on this mostly because of it's quad processor and 13 mp camera [a camera which I to this day had maybe 20 minutes of actual fully functional use of] I was crazy apprehensive of going to a phone with no removal battery or sd slot. These were some of the things I loved the most and lorded them over my iPhone touting friends. But here I was. Me! Knowing my download limitations waaaay in advance. Me! Unable to just pull the cover off and tap the battery out to fix sudden crashes. It was madness at it's finest.
Then suddenly I started to grow to love this thing. The thin, light-weight body. The bright screen. The native (non-Samsung) Android menu key positions. The modest xda community. Something about having a device that next to no one knows about is refreshing.
This device makes me feel like I have some non-amazing super powers just waiting to bust out.
Now if only I could get some damned 4G around here....
Or an official update to the latest JB

Very cool man. This here phone of ours is a beast and based on specs, might be future proofed for some time yet. It certainly won't compete on a raw power basis with some of what's rolling off assembly lines even today, but it will be able to run just about everything we throw at it competently for quite some time.

Screen issue since arrival 1 week ago

I've tried to search around a bit for some help but I'm not really sure what to search for. I found one other thread that was maybe similar to my issue but I'm not sure.
I ordered the note 8 from Staples and it arrived last Tuesday 9/10. I was a really hot day and the packing box was roasting hot. The product packaging was hot and the device was hot. I let it cool but when I finally powered it up the screen was buggy (see pic band of "static/snow" it was worse than that). I did a little search to see if I should return it right then or if it was just a temporary thing. What I could find seemed to suggest it might be the heat, factory reset and see if it was better. I did that and it was better for a day or two. Then it just would flicker a bit late in the day on days when I used it a bit more. Today it's been acting up since I first turned it on.
It doesn't get really hot just maybe a little warm in the 80 degree range maybe where I can just barely feel it.
So, I am bummed out wondering if I need to take it back to Staples or contact Samsung now that I've got it all set up ect. Or exactly what's going on with it? I haven't tried a reset again but not sure at this point it's going to do anything...?
So just looking for some thoughts on what I should do next or if it's able to be saved or not?
(pictures: it's not always that bad sometimes it's just tiny speckles on pictures or text sort of like at the bottom of the bar in the second picture)
Well now the charger doesn't seem to want to work so...
Pretty sure of my answer but feels like one of those moments when you just need someone else to say it haha.

Was in the process of returning it right when you posted that I bet. It was beyond buggy this morning so there was no denying it needed to go back. I think I was in denial because I've been so lucky until now that I've never had to return something that was brand new like this.
First they wanted me to go through the warranty but finally decided I could just exchange it (sadly none in stock) so shipping a new one should get here Fri, knock on wood!
Thanks
It's a pain in the @ss, but better safe than sorry. Probably wouldn't made you pay the shipping on warranty to boot.
Good luck.

I had the exact same issue with my first note 8 received, on the lower third of the screen, and it was getting worse as it was used.
Return is the best option, this is hardware related (maybe a simple connector, but it's better to have a good unit isn't it ?)

It seems that the failure rate of the Note 8 is pretty high. I saw refurbished Note 8 sold everywhere: eBay, bestbuy, Walmart etc...

[Q] Is the nexus 7 even worth buying?

I've wanted a Nexus 7 for awhile now. I noticed Office Depot was selling the 32gb version for $229. And I was planning on going and buying one later today. But, after reading through this forum, I'm wondering if it's even worth buying one? Most of the threads I've seen are people just having problems with it. I don't want to drop over $200 on something that has touchscreen issues and random screen cracks. Are all of them this way, or just some? If so, is there another android tablet in the $200-300 price point that would be a better option?

The touchscreen issues are gone for me since the 4.4 update. But the screen has randomly cracked for me, in the left up corner (still working). If it worth buying one ? I don't know, this is a good tablet, smooth, fast, has a beautiful screen and all but it has some issues... I would say it depends of which phone you have.

I was using a galaxy s3, until it got sudden death. Now I'm using my old s2 skyrocket.

It's slightly out of my price range. I'ma gonna be leaving here in a bit and pick a nexus up. Hopefully I don't get a defective model. If I do, I'll probably just get a kindle fire hdx and wait for cyanogenmod.
I got the nexus. So far, so good. Updated to 4.4.2. Used a screen test with no problems at all. The only thing I've noticed is a slight audio skip when switching from portrait for landscape mode on the youtube app.
For me, even considering some touch issues, it was worth it because the n7 was my first jump into android as well as a tablet form factor. I have not even scratched the surface on what there is to learn.

Don't worry about what you read here, if you go to a repair shop, you're going to see nothing but broken cars. For every device that someone is complaining about, there are 10,000 that work fine. It's just that the other 10,000 people don't post on xda.

Agree.
You tend to only see bad experiences on forums because that's what most people use them for.
The good experiences are usually never reported.

I have two 2012 Nexus 7s and one 2013. All perfect with no issues. There is no better tablet for the money.

If I'm remembering right, there's a whole thread in the general forum devoted to just that. OP, you might want to go hunting for it. Giant pile of testimonials from people who love the tablet. I had a screen lifting problem on my first unit, but my exchange has performed flawlessly so far.
