Usually not, but damn. Last week my original GNex had it's radio's take a dump. After 11 solid months, I rebooted one night and had data, but voice never came back. So I put everything back stock and walked into Verizon and paid $15 to have a replacement overnighted to me.
Now, a week later, I've come to the conclusion that my replacement is fubared. I've never seen a device experience sleep of death + turning into an oven so quickly and consistently before. It's good for 30, maybe 60 minutes tops before it craps out. This is awesome when your phone is your alarm clock.
So here I go again, getting ready to waltz back into the Verizon store and do the same song and dance again. Pay $15, get a phone on Tuesday, probably have something massively wrong, rinse and repeat. Hey, devices take a crap from time to time, and luckily mine did while still under warranty, but I'm taking picks on how many replacement units I have to go through before one finally sticks.
My guess is the 3rd replacement is a charm. Who wants the over?
Those of you who have gone through the replacement fiasco with Samsung, how many tries did it take you to get a good one?
Why do you pay when you have still warranty?

Shipping to have it overnighted. It's also awesome that my local store doesn't toss out loaner phones while you wait (It'd make it easy to avoid that whole shipping thing). Maybe I'll call Verizon Tech Support just to bug them about.
no issues at all with mine...
I love Samsung personally
OOOh, free overnight shipping. Thanks Big Red!
Hopefully the next one is a charm because honestly, I don't know what I'd do without a Nexus device on Verizon's network. The alternatives make me cringe.
why is there no option for none
Read the last line of the OP.
I'm just curious to know if getting bum replacements is a "normal" thing because for a phone that went through a "100 point inspection", well, they dropped the ball on this one.

Getting my third in the mail tomorrow Last one had ridiculous sensitivity issues, we'll see what the next one brings.
And why don't you just call em up instead of going in to the store? I keep my phone and they send me a refurb in the mail. The first phone was USPS, but after that one was crap they began overnighting it via FedEx.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I went through 4 before I got my refurb, then I promptly sold it for a GSM model. That's one thing that I have to hand it to Verizon for, they were really good once I got the 1st defective one. I had 4 at one time, most overnighted at no cost and no fees or holds.
They did try everything they could to not send me one though... Unlike Google who were more then happy to send me multiple N7's.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I had to replace one because of dirt under the screen even though its new and heat issues, the replacement was perfect and never get hot under normal use. I also bought one recently and it has heat issue and poor screen as well, but I'll live with it for the price. Its sort of a luck thing with this device, especially a lottery with AMOLED screen. I was going to get the N4 but it seem to also have lots of little issues on its own, such as getting too hot, I really hate phones getting overheat.I'm still waiting on confirmation on the USB OTG too.
After reading this it makes me think I need to bug Asurion tomorrow, I had to get an insurance replacement so I have to go through them for warranty now, they are definitely more strict on some things but like 3 minutes of complaining about signal got me a new one once already. The current one gets EXTREMELY hot under even normal use, so hot that it is uncomfortable to hold and definitely would be uncomfortable up against your face.

The first time I went in, I was hoping that they'd have one in the back they could swap out for me, or a loaner phone (fat chance, I know). My job pretty much requires a working cell phone. I'm kind of surprised that Verizon was so willing to send a replacement out in just a few minutes. Granted, I don't know what alternative they'd have. There's no real way to troubleshoot SOD issues. My main concern is just not having to go through a massive fiasco running through multiple devices, especially with an 8 day vacation coming up.

Well, if it's still under warranty, I'd jump on it.
Let's see... My first nexus has a seriously bad screen. I shipped it out the same day I got it. Got my replacement (#2) and the screen was worse than the first one. So I sent that bad and got another one (#3). This one had the same issue as OP. Radios wouldn't work....no voice or data and the phone got really hot. Enough to where I couldn't hold it to my face. So I sent that one in and they sent me a Samsung Stratosphere (#4 replacement). Sent that in and got the nexus I currently have making 5 replacements (4 with nexuses). I also went through Verizon...
Good luck
I had to replace one about ~8 months ago for screen ghosting. I was really satisfied with the replacement until now because the ghosting is back on the replacement. I'm contemplating switching to T-Mobile though, so I dunno if I'm going to attempt to replace this one.

Well that sucks. My screens have been great. Well, that, or I'm not picky. The second replacement seems rock solid so far. Good data speeds, strong signal, solid screen, solid GPS and no SOD/Overheating. Maybe I've lucked out...but I'm not uncrossing my fingers.
I've been through 5+ Nexi already. Tec Asurion is totally worth the $6.99 per month! Free overnight shipping FTW.
Well, so much for Replacement #2. I highly doubt it's the sim card.

So last week on Monday morning i cracked my HTC Sensation screen while
getting out from my car as it was on my lap and i completely forgot about it.
I have done this before and not a single scratch, but this time i guess it just
fell at the wrong spot. What ever all good, that's why i have insurance right?
So i go and file a claim with Asurion for them to just tell me that there is no
available Sensation phones and that they can just replace it with the SG2.
Sure why not i said, might as well get a new different phone to play around
with. So they shipped it out on Monday telling me that by Tuesday it should
be there... Nope came on Wednesday.(Most likely Fedex problem...). So like
a little child i'm all excited and start ripping apart the box to get my phone .
I open it up and start looking at all the peaces and realize right off the bat
that their is no freaking battery. How the hell am i supposed to turn this thing
on with no battery. Even tried to just put in the usb charger but it just vibrates.
(probably meaning that there is no freaking battery). So i'm completely pissed
of at this point and am about to start raging. I call up Asurion customer service
to tell them what happened. (One thing is, Asurion got some really nice
customer service people right in america i mean it was just like talking to
a friend and they where really nice and just flat out nice lol. All 6 people that i
called!. VERY GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!) So they tell me that i can go into
my local store and just buy a battery and they will refund me $39.99. So i hang
up and goto the store to find out they are selling that battery for 49.99. So i
call Asurion back again to tell them this and they said they will ONLY be able to
refund me $39.99 and what ever else is upto me. I tell them forget it and ship
me a new battery. The lady tells me that they don't ship battery's by fedex
but by regular mail, and that i wont get my battery until 5-7 days... So i was
kind of pissed and ended up speaking to a super visor and apparently his super
visor and nothing can be done about this. What ever i said just freaking send
it and get this over with. SO figure it like this. They say 5-7 business days for
the package to arrive by regular mail. Regular mail has a 6 day business work
week Monday-Saturday. Today is now Thursday so that would mean that this
was the last day that it should have came on. To my surprise i get home a few
hours ago and there is no freaking battery in the mailbox.... GRRRRR
Back to calling Asurion. Again i tell them the problem and again they tell me that
they will send me another battery by regular mail. Now i wasn't having any of
this. I have 14 days to return my old phone. Now i am on day 8 of this 14 day
return policy. What the hell am i going to do? They told me they can contact
t-mobile and tell them the problem and not to expect the package for 30 days.
I told them NO because i cant even use the damn phone so it doesn't matter.
( I was ling cause i'm using it right now lol). I started screaming at this poor
lady and then just asked for a super visor again. After about 20minutes of being
on hold 4 times, she comes back on the line and says that they have come to
a solution.
The solution:
They are going to send me a package with a new phone WITH BATTERY and
send it via fedex so i can get it tomorrow. They have a very strict policy
on shipping anything other then phones via fedex express.
I just now have to send back 2 phones...
This is what i have been going thru for the past 8 days..
I hope it comes in tomorrow with a battery and i also hope that the battery that
they sent in via regular mail also come sin so that i can now have a spare battery.
So that is my Asurion ordeal for the past week and a half.
Fun times ehh.
Wow! Hope it all comes together for ya from here on out
Yea, thanks a lot. I really hope it comes in tomorrow with everything functioning and intact.
they are sapose to send a new phone in sealed box when replacing your phone with a different phone. Thats weird they would do that either somebody messed up or they have some bull$**T new policies. I don't know seems like T-mobile and what not was real cool when they were about to merge but now they got real greedy.

Thanks for the tip. I love my Sensation but the battery life is just HORRIBLE. I mean it was so bad that only making a few phone calls and checking xda for 30minutes tops during work, i'd be at like 15-10% by 5pm after a full work day. Hope the sg2 handles battery life much better.

Sadly, After having had my GSII past the 14 day return window, I'm kinda wanting my Sensation back. The T989's only advantage is the 16GB onboard memory and 256MB more RAM.
Factor in that Sensation has several ICS ROMs and we have none and there are non on the horizon, I'd rather go with the Sensation, even though I had a ton of issues with my 4 that i went through. The T989 just doesn't impress me enough to justify the cost over upgrading from the Sensation. The only thing keeping me from selling the GSII and getting another Sensation is the crap luck i had with them.
You could of just got the galaxy nexus extended battery for 25.99+tax from the Verizon store.

Hey everyone,
I have been given a gnex for free by a coworker after another coworker dropped it and spilled coffee on it. It wouldnt turn on and the glass is cracked. Beauty of being the "android guy" at work I suppose. After trying a few troubleshooting steps like getting the phone into download mode, i tried a friends gnex battery in it and it booted right up. Its only the glass thats cracked, lcd and digitizer are fine as far as i can tell from using it for several hours. One 8 dollar battery from amazon later i have a functioning free gnex upgrade.
I thought id be able to live with the cracked screen but i think id like to replace it, i like my phones like i like my women.. Do you guys foresee anything substantially better than the gnex coming out in the next few months? Im up for an upgrade in about 6 months from my droid charge (company phone) and then ill have to convince my boss to go for it...or samsung wants 160 to replace the screen, which of course will be coming out of my pocket.
Would you guys put almost an upgrade fee cost into getting a gnex or wait?

Enjoy the free GNex for a few months, then enjoy your free upgrade. Plus, you can sell the Gnex once you get a new phone
Replace the screen...you can sell it for much more, if and when something better comes along and catches your eye.....like the next Nexus!
The GNex is already six months old, and the next one should be out in Oct or Dec
Screen replacement is what...$20-$60? Do it. Save your upgrade for something like the next Nexus.

Unfortunately... no Glass + LCD + Digitizer is all one piece on this phone, i thought the same. It's strange, samsung will fix the screen and pay shipping both ways for 160. The cheapest I can find to buy just the part is almost $200. I would be dumb to not go for the samsung deal.
I think I'm going to call samsung back tomorrow and send it off and then I guess in about two weeks I'll be officially on a gnex Then let the xda way of life begin.

If I was buying today I would absolutely buy the Nexus again based solely off of Dev support.
I think you should fix the screen and enjoy it. $160 seems like a great price to get all of that work done correctly including shipping. Just keep an eye on the phones for the next 6 months, especially the next Nexus line. You could always sell the nexus for some pocket cash if you decide to upgrade.
I would have to agree with the majority. Def fix the screen and enjoy the abundance of awesome dev support.

HAHA! Now I feel dumb
Try buying a second hand nexus for $170. It's basically impossible.
Swypesation
Also, keep in mind you're essentially paying what you would pay for the GNex on contract, without signing a contract. So you're still getting a hell of a deal, even with that screen repair.
So you have a phone that will work for a long while, without having signed a contract, for cheaper than it would have cost to sign a contract. Great deal.
Hey everyone.
Need personal opinions as I cannot decide for myself -.-
Recently got a warranty replacement device from T-Mobile.
It's a refurb.. -.-
My old one had a weird smudge in all camera apps as well as in the picture. Really annoying.
Well I got my refurb, it's got it's issues, 3 "ink" spots on the screen, my original had zero! I cannot undervolt by more than 25mA. My original could under volt by 150 across the board. The refurb gets very hot (approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit with normal use) my original hardly ever broke 90. And my battery life is freaking **** with this new device. (I'm guessing heat is the issue here)
I'm really ****ing upset. Excuse my language..
The decision I cannot make is this.
Do I request T-Mobile to ship my original device back to me(it's still in transit just dropped it off today), and either 1 deal with the camera smudge, or 2 take apart both devices and swap the camera modules?
I looked all over YouTube, I cannot find anyone saying there is a warranty sticker covering any screws.
Does anyone know if they can tell if the device was disassembled? I have professional tools so I won't leave markings behind.
Simply put, I hate this "new" device.
I don't understand why companies give refurbished devices for warranty when I am paying full price for a brand new device that should last at least a year. It's not my fault something happened that was out of my control..
Thanks for putting up with my rant lol.

Wow, that's though. I send in my Device to samsung for a fix, and they fixed it with a "replaced PBA" comment, but I saw some people say they just send another one. Hopefully it's not a refurbished. I doubt they will be able to cancel the shipping, but if they an, most definitely swap the camera modules. Having those problems on the refurbished sucks. I could have fixed mine but I sent it in hoping Id get another one which didn't die after 2.5Hrs screen on time and 12 hours running time. Switch out the cameras if possible. I myself, if I get a bad one on saturday, I'll hate my descision but Im going to go for the 16GB nexus 4. Hate the limited storage and the on screen buttons that get in the way, but heck I'm not going to live 2 years with a faulty device

I can understand your frustration With my experience working foe Tmobile and having done countless warranty exchanges since the my touch, they will not return your original device. Unless you cannsomehowncontact ups and have them stop transit and send it back and return the one they sent you. You should contact tkobile again and tell them what happened. Afaik they will not return it back to you. When it gets to their processing center it'll get factory reset, processed and possibly put back up as a refurb if it passes all their tests. You do have the option of requesting another warranty exchange, possibly going to retention this time or a higher tier of tech support.

I called. And they can't send the original back. But they want me to send the one I have now back and once they receive it they will send me out another one. And they said they made a note that it is my second replacement so they said hopefully it will be a brand new device.

Hello all!
I read somewhere on the internet (not sure if it was XDA or not) that someone was able to get
their VZW Galaxy Nexus replaced or swapped with a totally different phone.
I've had my Gnex for well over a year so I can't get a Certified Pre-Owned replacement at no cost anymore.
(FYI, I've had it replaced twice due to radio issues)
My current Nexus also has the notorious radio issue (consistently bad signal, signal drop, complete service loss etc..)
and I would like to get it replaced with a different phone. I read somewhere that Verizon would compensate you with a different
phone if you had insurance. Which I do..
So my question is, what phones would they offer as a viable replacement? (hopefully one with better radios and possibly more up to date )
Thanks!
U would need to call the insurance place and ask them.

Once you do find out, could you please post your result here as well? I'm basically in the same boat as you and have been a little curious about that.

Will do! I haven't been able to do it. I have free time tomorrow so hopefully I'll get some answers.
It's going to depend on what's in stock at the warehoues. If they have the GN in stock, you are getting a GN. You may be able to get something "similar" if you have had a few GNs replaced, and they have all had issues that are not your fault. But you will need to plead your case. Or you may get something else if there is no stock of the GN in the Asurion warehouses.

Yeah I talked to a rep today at a store and he told me to file a claim at phoneclaim.com. he told me it wasn't Asurion though. But it clearly is. Also, I don't really trust Asurion. I've heard bad news about them. I plan on calling Customer Care tonight after work to get a little more info. The rep seemed kind of ill-knowledged about replacements and such.

Haha that's the thread I got the idea from! It is weird that they'd deprive you of a battery and battery door. I feel like Verizon makes plenty of money. Enough to provide sufficient replacement services. Anyway, I talked to a rep earlier today (actually a tech support rep) and he did a trouble ticket and had "network specialists" check the towers around me. Then they call back and ask me if the problem persists -_- what a drag! The tech rep was really nice. I just think they're afraid to pull some strings for us some (most) of the times..

It's not that they are depriving him of a battery and a door. It's that all insurance replacements are the phone only. When you send the "damaged" phone back, you take out any sd cards, batteries, etc, and just send them the shell. Although I'm pretty sure the Galaxy Nexus I was sent in error when I sent a Droid DNA back did indeed have the battery door, although I never took it out of the sleeve it's shipped in, since I knew I wasn't going to use it.
That's the one good thing about having a non-removable battery...you get the complete phone (in the case of the Droid DNA I had for a bit)

Is this you're first device? I was on my third for radio issues. I just told them I would keep getting replacements all they wanted, one after another until I got a working one. I had to call back once to get a rep who would give me an S3. I have to say the S3 I noticeably snappier, especially noticeable when installing apps. I immediately put CM on the S3 and am a happy camper.

It is my third device. All of them have had radio issues. I haven't heard from Verizon in 2 days so when Monday rolls around I'll give them a call back and hopefully get something going.
My friend has an S3 on T-Mobile and he has it rooted and its so snappy and smooth. I want.

I am on my 3rd Gnex for the same various issues like radio and also charging problems. Did you call an 800 numbers? If so, do you have it handy and wouldn't mind PMing me details? TIA

Picked up the One about 6 weeks ago... immediately had issues with the camera in low-light, like most have had..
Then last week, out of the blue the phone got pretty hot, and discharged completely from 90% in about 75 minutes, even while powered off.. It never took another charge after that. Went to Verizon, got a replacement sent to me.
Replacement gets in last night, it's essentially DOA. 90% of the time it has a screen with colorful snow (think back when TVs didn't have a signal, you know MacGayver and the snow storm). So I called today to get a replacement for the replacement.
If the 3rd one in 6 weeks is also bad, I'm demanding a NEW phone from VZW, and I'm getting a different model. Advice welcome on the new model.
I would advise against this phone if you're thinking about it.

Sorry you've had bad luck, because this phone is pretty great. Most of us have NOT had the low light camera issues and what not. Hopefully the 3rd time is a charm for you. There are some other great phones out there too that are worth looking in to. I have a coworker with the Moto X and another one with the G2. Both were fun to mess around with. Wouldn't go with the X if you're worried about the camera much (it doesn't touch a functioning One camera) but other than that it's great. G2 was pretty neat too. Your isolated experience is not worth advising others to avoid the phone, though.

Hey everyone. Forget the countless number of ridiculously great reviews this device has received and the praise from users in this forum. This one guy thinks this phone sucks. #anecdotal

lol
Going through two bad devices can be a rather frustrating experience though, so it's understandable the guy needs to vent.

You really need to go to HTC first if having problems like that. Verizon just sends you a new phone and it's a 50/50 chance its DOA. HTC should test it before shipping back. Then you will know 100% that when you get the phone back it will be working properly.
Although I do find myself missing my sg4, and I will prob be getting sg5,
this phone is a beast, and I love it.
very solid.
HTC Sense 5.5 android 4.3 already here and stable.
beast mode all around.
you got some bad apples.
my phone luckily been solid since day 1
no camera issues, phone is perfect
I never order a new phone on line. I want to see it and mess with it to ensure it is fully functional. My mom recently wanted to move from an iPhone 4 to the One after seeing mine and my son's. We went to Best Buy and had to try 4 phones before finding one without the camera bug.
The sales idiot kept telling me that issue was on all One's. I covered my camera completly and showed him mine totally black screen unlike the first 3 he gave me which were purple when completly covering the camera. On the 4th one, I finally found a good one and shoved it in his face, I also made the comment that he needs to do his homework before arguing with a customer who obvioulsy knew a lot more about phones then he did.
I don't mind their ignornace until they speak to me like they are the "god of all phones" and I'm an uneducated idiot.
If the One is not your cup of tea, there are plenty of other choices out there. I think you just had some bad luck.
