[Q] Replacing a Verizon Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello all!
I read somewhere on the internet (not sure if it was XDA or not) that someone was able to get
their VZW Galaxy Nexus replaced or swapped with a totally different phone.
I've had my Gnex for well over a year so I can't get a Certified Pre-Owned replacement at no cost anymore.
(FYI, I've had it replaced twice due to radio issues)
My current Nexus also has the notorious radio issue (consistently bad signal, signal drop, complete service loss etc..)
and I would like to get it replaced with a different phone. I read somewhere that Verizon would compensate you with a different
phone if you had insurance. Which I do..
So my question is, what phones would they offer as a viable replacement? (hopefully one with better radios and possibly more up to date )
Thanks!

U would need to call the insurance place and ask them.

Once you do find out, could you please post your result here as well? I'm basically in the same boat as you and have been a little curious about that.

Will do! I haven't been able to do it. I have free time tomorrow so hopefully I'll get some answers.

It's going to depend on what's in stock at the warehoues. If they have the GN in stock, you are getting a GN. You may be able to get something "similar" if you have had a few GNs replaced, and they have all had issues that are not your fault. But you will need to plead your case. Or you may get something else if there is no stock of the GN in the Asurion warehouses.

Yeah I talked to a rep today at a store and he told me to file a claim at phoneclaim.com. he told me it wasn't Asurion though. But it clearly is. Also, I don't really trust Asurion. I've heard bad news about them. I plan on calling Customer Care tonight after work to get a little more info. The rep seemed kind of ill-knowledged about replacements and such.

Haha that's the thread I got the idea from! It is weird that they'd deprive you of a battery and battery door. I feel like Verizon makes plenty of money. Enough to provide sufficient replacement services. Anyway, I talked to a rep earlier today (actually a tech support rep) and he did a trouble ticket and had "network specialists" check the towers around me. Then they call back and ask me if the problem persists -_- what a drag! The tech rep was really nice. I just think they're afraid to pull some strings for us some (most) of the times..

It's not that they are depriving him of a battery and a door. It's that all insurance replacements are the phone only. When you send the "damaged" phone back, you take out any sd cards, batteries, etc, and just send them the shell. Although I'm pretty sure the Galaxy Nexus I was sent in error when I sent a Droid DNA back did indeed have the battery door, although I never took it out of the sleeve it's shipped in, since I knew I wasn't going to use it.
That's the one good thing about having a non-removable battery...you get the complete phone (in the case of the Droid DNA I had for a bit)

Is this you're first device? I was on my third for radio issues. I just told them I would keep getting replacements all they wanted, one after another until I got a working one. I had to call back once to get a rep who would give me an S3. I have to say the S3 I noticeably snappier, especially noticeable when installing apps. I immediately put CM on the S3 and am a happy camper.

It is my third device. All of them have had radio issues. I haven't heard from Verizon in 2 days so when Monday rolls around I'll give them a call back and hopefully get something going.
My friend has an S3 on T-Mobile and he has it rooted and its so snappy and smooth. I want.

[Q] Warranty Exchange Problems?

Hey,
So i did like 3 warranty exchanges with T-mobile for my galaxy s2, and they still haven't sent me a working device. So they said that i had 2 options, either get a different phone or get another galaxy s 2, BUT, they said if i get another galaxy s 2 they won't replace it for a different phone if it doesn't work. And they say that there are "no phones available that are not a downgrade from your current device." I need help. What do i do? should i get another galaxy s 2 and just jeep getting those, or should i wait for a new phone to come out? And by the way, they won't send me a white one either
Thanks for your help!
First of what were all 3 problems with the phone. Sgs2 seem to be a good phone. I can't really see amother comparison except amaze.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Try calling and going through tmobile. The warranty is done by Tmobile as a free service to their customers however the true warranty is through Samsung. They might be able to ensure that you get a new replacement rather than a refurbished one. What other two phone options did they give you? When did you buy your phone?
all three phones had terrible lines on the screen and the third one couldn
t keep a call and rebooting alot. weird i know.
I did try calling T-mobile and they said that the amaze was a "drown grade" which makes no sense. The only options they gave were to keep getting galaxy s2's (which i didn't want to do cause it would suck if they all have the lines and stuff) or to wait it out for a new phone to come out. If i went the route of getting the galaxy s 2 again, then they said that they wouldn't be able to end up giving me a different model phone. All of the reps i talked to said the same thing.
That is not fair.. Have you tried talking to Samsung directly and hear what they say..yeah. I would keep the Samsung. Been using it for 2 weeks one and am loving it..

Yeah i tried samsung, but they only repair and from the things i have heard on the forums they don't do the best work...
you probably heard that from me. well they said its guarenteed to work this time. the priority is higher on my phone now. they said they are gunna replace the whole back. so technically a new phone
My gs2 shipped today, they're sending me a brand new one. Thanks for your help and replies everyone! Can't wait to be back on the gs2 and gs2 forums.

You must have the worst luck I've ever heard of. I'm one of the lucky ones I guess, zero issues here. I've even dropped mine a few times. Dented the bezel on the front but everything is fine.
I would go with calling Samsung anyways. Process though them. Maybe better luck?

Safe to get a VZW replacement Nexus yet?

I recall a lengthy thread warning users not to obtain a replacement Gnex through VZ due to software issues. Well my hardware issues are about to make me lose it, so is it safe to exchange my phone yet?
:fingers-crossed:
My girlfriend and I got ours a little over three weeks ago and haven't had any issues. We both got IMM76Q, so I would guess that is what's going to be on any replacement device. I hear ya' on the hardware issues. I loved my Evo, but the failing HW was more than I wanted to put up with anymore.

I'm on #6 from Verizon, I'm sick of this. I love the Nexus itself but the signal/radio issues are terrible. I think I'm gonna attempt to get a SIII as a replacement. It's technically a better phone, but I'll be sad to leave the Nexus
My replacement is perfect.

My first replacement through asurion was a dud. I had a Chinese manufactured model and it kept losing signal. Second replacement went perfectly well and the unit had no signs of defect (korean model). Rooted it right away, installed cm10 and the new radios. With stock battery, I'm getting 16-18 hours of battery life, 1hr talk time, 1-2 hrs of screen time.

The only thing they would offer me was a RAZR. Which even that surprised me, because before they wouldn't even do that. So I said **** it and got a RAZR for me and my girlfriend. Same case with mine. Went thru 2 replacements. I asked for S3, but they would only offer me RAXR or Rezound or 'many other excellent' phones.
Anyone has luck getting an S3 as a replacement?

That's the one. They used the "flash is broken now" excuse to get an S3.
Edit: If the RAZR turns out to be a p.o.s. as well I may have to do the same.
I have been offered a RAZR every time I've called, I told them a removable battery is a must. The Rezound is the only other option and that is a downgrade in my opinion. I spoke to a great rep last time who really knew his ****, he told me the SIII has the same screen problems and headset issues as the Nexus, but if I kept having problems he would look into it. I'm not going to play any games/lie to get one either.
Like I said I don't really want a SIII, I just want a Nexus that works.

wut... these exist...
The one I talked to told me the RAZR shipped with JB...I doubted it very much when he said it, but I held out hope until I looked it up this morning.
Either way, the cons of owning my piece of **** Nexus outweighed the cons of the RAZR and having a new phone is always fun for a while. If it's a piece of **** maybe the day will come when they will give me an S3.

Ha, I flat out told him I've never spoke to a level 2 tech that actually was honest with me and knew what was going on. He gave me his extension also, I'm gonna give him a call back.
I loved my OG Droid and Moto quality seems to be the best, but like I said, there is no way I'm getting something with a non-removable battery.
Well, my camera stopped working on my current GNex(#2). I'm wary of exchanging it. It baffles me, though, that cell phone carriers only offer refurb devices when you pay about $7/month for insurance while retail stores would exchange your faulty item for a new one when you have insurance. It doesn't seem right since we pay good money for these devices.
But I digress. I have a question, though. Would I be able to send it to Samsung to see if they can fix the camera(video chip) or should I just call Verizon to exchange?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
You can call Samsung and try going through them. The CSR suggested this because I really didn't want to get rid of my Nexus for another phone.
The problem is you would be without your phone, with no loaner for however long it takes to repair. It could be 2 weeks, could be a month. I assume you would also have to pay for shipping. And my experience with OEM repair has never been a positive experience. I wouldn't trust them to fix the right thing. You also run the risk of damage to the phone when they open it up. Maybe someone else with a GSM model can comment on the quality/ease of Samsung repair.

Sometimes I Really Hate Samsung

Usually not, but damn. Last week my original GNex had it's radio's take a dump. After 11 solid months, I rebooted one night and had data, but voice never came back. So I put everything back stock and walked into Verizon and paid $15 to have a replacement overnighted to me.
Now, a week later, I've come to the conclusion that my replacement is fubared. I've never seen a device experience sleep of death + turning into an oven so quickly and consistently before. It's good for 30, maybe 60 minutes tops before it craps out. This is awesome when your phone is your alarm clock.
So here I go again, getting ready to waltz back into the Verizon store and do the same song and dance again. Pay $15, get a phone on Tuesday, probably have something massively wrong, rinse and repeat. Hey, devices take a crap from time to time, and luckily mine did while still under warranty, but I'm taking picks on how many replacement units I have to go through before one finally sticks.
My guess is the 3rd replacement is a charm. Who wants the over?
Those of you who have gone through the replacement fiasco with Samsung, how many tries did it take you to get a good one?
Why do you pay when you have still warranty?

Shipping to have it overnighted. It's also awesome that my local store doesn't toss out loaner phones while you wait (It'd make it easy to avoid that whole shipping thing). Maybe I'll call Verizon Tech Support just to bug them about.
no issues at all with mine...
I love Samsung personally
OOOh, free overnight shipping. Thanks Big Red!
Hopefully the next one is a charm because honestly, I don't know what I'd do without a Nexus device on Verizon's network. The alternatives make me cringe.
why is there no option for none
Read the last line of the OP.
I'm just curious to know if getting bum replacements is a "normal" thing because for a phone that went through a "100 point inspection", well, they dropped the ball on this one.

Getting my third in the mail tomorrow Last one had ridiculous sensitivity issues, we'll see what the next one brings.
And why don't you just call em up instead of going in to the store? I keep my phone and they send me a refurb in the mail. The first phone was USPS, but after that one was crap they began overnighting it via FedEx.

I went through 4 before I got my refurb, then I promptly sold it for a GSM model. That's one thing that I have to hand it to Verizon for, they were really good once I got the 1st defective one. I had 4 at one time, most overnighted at no cost and no fees or holds.
They did try everything they could to not send me one though... Unlike Google who were more then happy to send me multiple N7's.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I had to replace one because of dirt under the screen even though its new and heat issues, the replacement was perfect and never get hot under normal use. I also bought one recently and it has heat issue and poor screen as well, but I'll live with it for the price. Its sort of a luck thing with this device, especially a lottery with AMOLED screen. I was going to get the N4 but it seem to also have lots of little issues on its own, such as getting too hot, I really hate phones getting overheat.I'm still waiting on confirmation on the USB OTG too.
After reading this it makes me think I need to bug Asurion tomorrow, I had to get an insurance replacement so I have to go through them for warranty now, they are definitely more strict on some things but like 3 minutes of complaining about signal got me a new one once already. The current one gets EXTREMELY hot under even normal use, so hot that it is uncomfortable to hold and definitely would be uncomfortable up against your face.

The first time I went in, I was hoping that they'd have one in the back they could swap out for me, or a loaner phone (fat chance, I know). My job pretty much requires a working cell phone. I'm kind of surprised that Verizon was so willing to send a replacement out in just a few minutes. Granted, I don't know what alternative they'd have. There's no real way to troubleshoot SOD issues. My main concern is just not having to go through a massive fiasco running through multiple devices, especially with an 8 day vacation coming up.

Well, if it's still under warranty, I'd jump on it.
Let's see... My first nexus has a seriously bad screen. I shipped it out the same day I got it. Got my replacement (#2) and the screen was worse than the first one. So I sent that bad and got another one (#3). This one had the same issue as OP. Radios wouldn't work....no voice or data and the phone got really hot. Enough to where I couldn't hold it to my face. So I sent that one in and they sent me a Samsung Stratosphere (#4 replacement). Sent that in and got the nexus I currently have making 5 replacements (4 with nexuses). I also went through Verizon...
Good luck
I had to replace one about ~8 months ago for screen ghosting. I was really satisfied with the replacement until now because the ghosting is back on the replacement. I'm contemplating switching to T-Mobile though, so I dunno if I'm going to attempt to replace this one.

Well that sucks. My screens have been great. Well, that, or I'm not picky. The second replacement seems rock solid so far. Good data speeds, strong signal, solid screen, solid GPS and no SOD/Overheating. Maybe I've lucked out...but I'm not uncrossing my fingers.

Need help making a decision...

Hey everyone.
Need personal opinions as I cannot decide for myself -.-
Recently got a warranty replacement device from T-Mobile.
It's a refurb.. -.-
My old one had a weird smudge in all camera apps as well as in the picture. Really annoying.
Well I got my refurb, it's got it's issues, 3 "ink" spots on the screen, my original had zero! I cannot undervolt by more than 25mA. My original could under volt by 150 across the board. The refurb gets very hot (approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit with normal use) my original hardly ever broke 90. And my battery life is freaking **** with this new device. (I'm guessing heat is the issue here)
I'm really ****ing upset. Excuse my language..
The decision I cannot make is this.
Do I request T-Mobile to ship my original device back to me(it's still in transit just dropped it off today), and either 1 deal with the camera smudge, or 2 take apart both devices and swap the camera modules?
I looked all over YouTube, I cannot find anyone saying there is a warranty sticker covering any screws.
Does anyone know if they can tell if the device was disassembled? I have professional tools so I won't leave markings behind.
Simply put, I hate this "new" device.
I don't understand why companies give refurbished devices for warranty when I am paying full price for a brand new device that should last at least a year. It's not my fault something happened that was out of my control..
Thanks for putting up with my rant lol.

Wow, that's though. I send in my Device to samsung for a fix, and they fixed it with a "replaced PBA" comment, but I saw some people say they just send another one. Hopefully it's not a refurbished. I doubt they will be able to cancel the shipping, but if they an, most definitely swap the camera modules. Having those problems on the refurbished sucks. I could have fixed mine but I sent it in hoping Id get another one which didn't die after 2.5Hrs screen on time and 12 hours running time. Switch out the cameras if possible. I myself, if I get a bad one on saturday, I'll hate my descision but Im going to go for the 16GB nexus 4. Hate the limited storage and the on screen buttons that get in the way, but heck I'm not going to live 2 years with a faulty device

I can understand your frustration With my experience working foe Tmobile and having done countless warranty exchanges since the my touch, they will not return your original device. Unless you cannsomehowncontact ups and have them stop transit and send it back and return the one they sent you. You should contact tkobile again and tell them what happened. Afaik they will not return it back to you. When it gets to their processing center it'll get factory reset, processed and possibly put back up as a refurb if it passes all their tests. You do have the option of requesting another warranty exchange, possibly going to retention this time or a higher tier of tech support.

Thanks for the reply. I was wishing to talk to someone who works for them. I really hate the newer one they sent me. No matter what ROM, kernel, modem it lasts at most about 8 hours 2 hours screen on time. And the phone gets almost too hot to hold . If I didn't have an otter box, i prolly wouldn't be able to hold it. And the worst part is is the freaking screen spots. I get its a known issue with the super amoled but Christ the phones not been released even a year! Not to mention the o e I paid full price for was/is flawless despite the camera smudge.
I'm calling them today after work and am not going to be as nice as I usually am.. I hate this ****..

I'd do that too. With the sgs2 I went through five warranty exchanges. They wouldn't offer me anything else because apparently it was the best phone they had even though they had the presale of the sgs3 going on when this happened. That's what drove me to sell it and buy a gnex. Long story short in back here.

So they want me to send this one back, and when they receive it, they will send another one back..

I feel your pain. They pulled the same refurbished bs on me before too. And a buddy of mine on Verizon got sent back a completely different (and lower end) refurbished phone with their insurance.
I know it doesn't help your current situation, but for your next phone I suggest you check out Square Trade. They actually treat you right & are fair and honest. Only thing is they don't cover theft. But I know they WON'T send you back a freaking refurbished phone. I used them once and they were great.

Next phone I'm saying efff you to everyone. No warranty for me, no insurance either. I'm fixing it myself. Either way I'm losing money.

I called. And they can't send the original back. But they want me to send the one I have now back and once they receive it they will send me out another one. And they said they made a note that it is my second replacement so they said hopefully it will be a brand new device.

Verizon certified replacements

what are y'alls experiences with verizon's certified/refurbed replacements? quality, condition, etc. more than anything, i'm worried that the battery it comes with will be in poor condition.
I'm getting my htc one replaced for the purple-tint camera issue (which, btw, both verizon and htc acknowledge for hardware repair/replacement). iI can either 1) have htc repair my phone, but i have to send it in and go without it for a couple of weeks, or b) i can get it replaced by verizon, but will almost certainly get a certified like-new, which is fine as long as its 'like new'.
thoughts/opinions/experiences?
i'll let y'all know if the camera issue is fixed

I've had a mixed bag in regards to this. One swap of a Razr arrived with chips out of the display and scratches on the casing. The next swap after that was fine. I had an iphone 4 that I had to have swapped bc it had a bad charge port and the iphone I received had a non-functional display. Keep in mind this was years ago and they could have remedied those issues by now (so don't freak out lol). Just relaying my experiences.
If you go the Verizon route I'd like to see what the exchanged device you receive is like as far as condition goes. My One has the issue as well but I can't send it in to HTC and be without it for 2 weeks. If you get a decent device I might roll the dice with Verizon replacement again.
I have had two replacements, both were perfect condition and the batteries were like brand new. Neither had camera issues. Not a single problem so far.

its a serious brawl between the impatient and the paranoid sides of my psyche lol. so the vzw dude said they can send a replacement, after which i have 5 days to send my device or send the refurb back. so i figure i'll test out the CLN, if its no good i'll send my phone to htc.
i'll definitely let you know how it goes.

On this issue I can tell you first hand. I worked as a Service Tech back in Eris days and 90% of their stock was refurbished through a company who did horrible work. Every customer I dealt with came back numerous time before finding a reliable device. Now to say with HTC One most likely you will get a used like new device. They haven't had enough returns to refurbish at this point. Their knowledge of the device is zero..zero!! I would definitely grab it up while you can.

:fingers-crossed: hope you're right. the only other consideration being that it has a non-defect camera/sensor
OP if you have the ability to send the phone to HTC i would. Ive had nothing but problems with VZW CLN program. I went through 3 HTC rezounds. First was DOA, second the headphone jack wouldn't work, third the screen wasn't glued to the LCD letting dust in.
i ended up going to insurance and have them get me a new phone, at the time all they had was an Inc 4g LTE so i said SOLD. Never again will i deal with VZW repairs.
just my $.02

Yeah I hated to let the cat out of the bag..they made me sign a waiver years ago to not let their TRADE secrets out..lol
that's how a big company rolls dude..most of the time I had to fix the refurbs to give to customers because they did a sad job. Did they test the device._ _ _ no. C'mon I had a dude escalate because of this and a coworker had to call the police.
Well it seems more ppl than not have had bad experiences with vzw swaps. Hopefully you luck out OP

To clarify cornjo, are you saying you think I'll have better or worse luck than when you were working for vz tech?

You'll have better luck not dealing with the store grab the certified replacement it's probably a device they used to test with because not many HTC One's have been returned..shows how good the device is bro.

jeez wtf! you'd think someone would notice before they put it in the box. its practically comical at this point. i'm having a hard time believing the replacement system can be THIS bad. If anything i'm hoping the phone they send me is ludicrously inadequate so i can demand a brand new one.
I thought it was hilarious I emailed them a pic they overnighted me a new one before I sent the useless one back

Don't get me started...CLNR phones are a horrible gamble..I think I'm on my 7th/8th Rezound (back to back returns). Loose screens, overheating, defective cameras, etc). I don't like being toyed with. I did tons of research, found out that they were outsourcing the repairs to some cheap company (something like "PCM"?). They kept trying to give me a new lower spec phone for a while too and I had them on file lying to me about sending me a new Rezound TWICE. Finally escalated the sh*t out of the issue and found the "president" of the So Cal headquarters. So...yeah, be careful.
tl;dr
The more you know about Verizon the worse it gets.

lol uhhhh... Wasn't a camera standard on the Nexus? How the hell?
Verizon is comprised of a bunch of douchebags
I have minor backlight bleed from the home button but everything else is flawless (I'm trying to overcome my OCD and keep it LOL). But on topic Verizon CLNR's are beyond ass.
