Screen issue since arrival 1 week ago - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

I've tried to search around a bit for some help but I'm not really sure what to search for. I found one other thread that was maybe similar to my issue but I'm not sure.
I ordered the note 8 from Staples and it arrived last Tuesday 9/10. I was a really hot day and the packing box was roasting hot. The product packaging was hot and the device was hot. I let it cool but when I finally powered it up the screen was buggy (see pic band of "static/snow" it was worse than that). I did a little search to see if I should return it right then or if it was just a temporary thing. What I could find seemed to suggest it might be the heat, factory reset and see if it was better. I did that and it was better for a day or two. Then it just would flicker a bit late in the day on days when I used it a bit more. Today it's been acting up since I first turned it on.
It doesn't get really hot just maybe a little warm in the 80 degree range maybe where I can just barely feel it.
So, I am bummed out wondering if I need to take it back to Staples or contact Samsung now that I've got it all set up ect. Or exactly what's going on with it? I haven't tried a reset again but not sure at this point it's going to do anything...?
So just looking for some thoughts on what I should do next or if it's able to be saved or not?
(pictures: it's not always that bad sometimes it's just tiny speckles on pictures or text sort of like at the bottom of the bar in the second picture)
Well now the charger doesn't seem to want to work so...
Pretty sure of my answer but feels like one of those moments when you just need someone else to say it haha.

Was in the process of returning it right when you posted that I bet. It was beyond buggy this morning so there was no denying it needed to go back. I think I was in denial because I've been so lucky until now that I've never had to return something that was brand new like this.
First they wanted me to go through the warranty but finally decided I could just exchange it (sadly none in stock) so shipping a new one should get here Fri, knock on wood!
Thanks

It's a pain in the @ss, but better safe than sorry. Probably wouldn't made you pay the shipping on warranty to boot.
Good luck.

I had the exact same issue with my first note 8 received, on the lower third of the screen, and it was getting worse as it was used.
Return is the best option, this is hardware related (maybe a simple connector, but it's better to have a good unit isn't it ?)

It seems that the failure rate of the Note 8 is pretty high. I saw refurbished Note 8 sold everywhere: eBay, bestbuy, Walmart etc...

Would you return...

So I'm on my 6th handset, and no flickering at last.
However this one has a dead pixel (again) and the front speaker holes where the led is are mis aligned, wonky basically and tbh I think it looks tacky like a cheap knock off
I'm torn between doa'ing this and going onto the 7th handset or just living with the two issues
What would you do?

7th time's a charm...
Those issues would bug me more tbh than the screen flicker which I currently experience but holding hope that 1.30 will resolve it. Try again and hope that the next handset is the holy grail.
Return it again until you get a good one mate. At the end of the day you are on a phone that you will be using at least a minimum for a year..so i say take it back

Personally I'd just return, the One X is an Amazing Handset, and you shouldn't have to live with a defective unit, i'm not sure why you're so unlucky to get 6 of them, but better to persist than give up and then not be able to return later.

I feel sorry for you as i was first time lucky....to be honest if you are not happy i`d return it and try again. If for some reason mine went kaput i`d keep searching for a perfect replacement..it`s a great phone.
Return it. Im on my eight one. Something so expensive should be perfect.
Thanks for the replies, think I agree and will arrange the next replacement!

But why are you not getting your replacement direct in the shop, (I would) - and I'd check it in the shop before I left.

I often cant help to think that people only find (some of the minor) issues with handsets once they have been on the forums and then go to look for them.
I wonder if I passed what i think to be a defect free handset to someone that has had more than 6 or 7 replacements that they would find defect that I dont see?
Just a thought….
Steve
No offence, but, return it and move on to a different handset... It is insane for anyone to buy/return/exchange 6-7 times for a product. Clearly the product doesn't work for you. If I have to exchange a product more than once, I'm done with that product..

That's the thing, I could, but to me there just isn't any competition to it, 100% working it wipes the floor with anything else (i hate Samsung's touchwiz and everything else they do with it like the stock browser has no desktop mode at least on sgs2, desktop mode is necessary for me) if there was a nexus with the same specs I wouldnt mind that, but then again I'm hooked on sense there's so many little features that I take for granted now and when I use another phone, it just doesn't feel right. And that's why I have to keep swapping, once I find the perfect one (which should have been the first one dammit) I will be a happy bunny
Edit: damn sense, any other product would have absolute maximum 2 tries then it would be off to another brand

I've almost driven myself mad trying to decide whether to return my HOX due to the flicker at low brightness. The problem is that for me it's a bit of a PITA to find the time to return to the shop, and the other thing is that both of the HOXs that colleagues of mine own, which came from different shops entirely, also exhibit exactly the same issue. So considering my phone is otherwise a very good example without any of the other issues I've heard about, I've decided to stick with it and see what the 1.30 update does.
This issue definitely isn't bothering me just because it's mentioned on this forum; I discovered the discussions on here after noticing the flicker myself.
I'd return it and get a replacement.

Sometimes I Really Hate Samsung

Usually not, but damn. Last week my original GNex had it's radio's take a dump. After 11 solid months, I rebooted one night and had data, but voice never came back. So I put everything back stock and walked into Verizon and paid $15 to have a replacement overnighted to me.
Now, a week later, I've come to the conclusion that my replacement is fubared. I've never seen a device experience sleep of death + turning into an oven so quickly and consistently before. It's good for 30, maybe 60 minutes tops before it craps out. This is awesome when your phone is your alarm clock.
So here I go again, getting ready to waltz back into the Verizon store and do the same song and dance again. Pay $15, get a phone on Tuesday, probably have something massively wrong, rinse and repeat. Hey, devices take a crap from time to time, and luckily mine did while still under warranty, but I'm taking picks on how many replacement units I have to go through before one finally sticks.
My guess is the 3rd replacement is a charm. Who wants the over?
Those of you who have gone through the replacement fiasco with Samsung, how many tries did it take you to get a good one?
Why do you pay when you have still warranty?

Shipping to have it overnighted. It's also awesome that my local store doesn't toss out loaner phones while you wait (It'd make it easy to avoid that whole shipping thing). Maybe I'll call Verizon Tech Support just to bug them about.
no issues at all with mine...
I love Samsung personally
OOOh, free overnight shipping. Thanks Big Red!
Hopefully the next one is a charm because honestly, I don't know what I'd do without a Nexus device on Verizon's network. The alternatives make me cringe.
why is there no option for none
Read the last line of the OP.
I'm just curious to know if getting bum replacements is a "normal" thing because for a phone that went through a "100 point inspection", well, they dropped the ball on this one.

Getting my third in the mail tomorrow Last one had ridiculous sensitivity issues, we'll see what the next one brings.
And why don't you just call em up instead of going in to the store? I keep my phone and they send me a refurb in the mail. The first phone was USPS, but after that one was crap they began overnighting it via FedEx.

I went through 4 before I got my refurb, then I promptly sold it for a GSM model. That's one thing that I have to hand it to Verizon for, they were really good once I got the 1st defective one. I had 4 at one time, most overnighted at no cost and no fees or holds.
They did try everything they could to not send me one though... Unlike Google who were more then happy to send me multiple N7's.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I had to replace one because of dirt under the screen even though its new and heat issues, the replacement was perfect and never get hot under normal use. I also bought one recently and it has heat issue and poor screen as well, but I'll live with it for the price. Its sort of a luck thing with this device, especially a lottery with AMOLED screen. I was going to get the N4 but it seem to also have lots of little issues on its own, such as getting too hot, I really hate phones getting overheat.I'm still waiting on confirmation on the USB OTG too.
After reading this it makes me think I need to bug Asurion tomorrow, I had to get an insurance replacement so I have to go through them for warranty now, they are definitely more strict on some things but like 3 minutes of complaining about signal got me a new one once already. The current one gets EXTREMELY hot under even normal use, so hot that it is uncomfortable to hold and definitely would be uncomfortable up against your face.

The first time I went in, I was hoping that they'd have one in the back they could swap out for me, or a loaner phone (fat chance, I know). My job pretty much requires a working cell phone. I'm kind of surprised that Verizon was so willing to send a replacement out in just a few minutes. Granted, I don't know what alternative they'd have. There's no real way to troubleshoot SOD issues. My main concern is just not having to go through a massive fiasco running through multiple devices, especially with an 8 day vacation coming up.

Well, if it's still under warranty, I'd jump on it.
Let's see... My first nexus has a seriously bad screen. I shipped it out the same day I got it. Got my replacement (#2) and the screen was worse than the first one. So I sent that bad and got another one (#3). This one had the same issue as OP. Radios wouldn't work....no voice or data and the phone got really hot. Enough to where I couldn't hold it to my face. So I sent that one in and they sent me a Samsung Stratosphere (#4 replacement). Sent that in and got the nexus I currently have making 5 replacements (4 with nexuses). I also went through Verizon...
Good luck
I had to replace one about ~8 months ago for screen ghosting. I was really satisfied with the replacement until now because the ghosting is back on the replacement. I'm contemplating switching to T-Mobile though, so I dunno if I'm going to attempt to replace this one.

Well that sucks. My screens have been great. Well, that, or I'm not picky. The second replacement seems rock solid so far. Good data speeds, strong signal, solid screen, solid GPS and no SOD/Overheating. Maybe I've lucked out...but I'm not uncrossing my fingers.
I've been through 5+ Nexi already. Tec Asurion is totally worth the $6.99 per month! Free overnight shipping FTW.
Well, so much for Replacement #2. I highly doubt it's the sim card.

Lol why? Seems to me that 2 separate pieces of one HW with a common issue (signal) and only one other thing in common (SIM card) makes the one other thing the most likely suspect...

Need help making a decision...

Hey everyone.
Need personal opinions as I cannot decide for myself -.-
Recently got a warranty replacement device from T-Mobile.
It's a refurb.. -.-
My old one had a weird smudge in all camera apps as well as in the picture. Really annoying.
Well I got my refurb, it's got it's issues, 3 "ink" spots on the screen, my original had zero! I cannot undervolt by more than 25mA. My original could under volt by 150 across the board. The refurb gets very hot (approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit with normal use) my original hardly ever broke 90. And my battery life is freaking **** with this new device. (I'm guessing heat is the issue here)
I'm really ****ing upset. Excuse my language..
The decision I cannot make is this.
Do I request T-Mobile to ship my original device back to me(it's still in transit just dropped it off today), and either 1 deal with the camera smudge, or 2 take apart both devices and swap the camera modules?
I looked all over YouTube, I cannot find anyone saying there is a warranty sticker covering any screws.
Does anyone know if they can tell if the device was disassembled? I have professional tools so I won't leave markings behind.
Simply put, I hate this "new" device.
I don't understand why companies give refurbished devices for warranty when I am paying full price for a brand new device that should last at least a year. It's not my fault something happened that was out of my control..
Thanks for putting up with my rant lol.

Wow, that's though. I send in my Device to samsung for a fix, and they fixed it with a "replaced PBA" comment, but I saw some people say they just send another one. Hopefully it's not a refurbished. I doubt they will be able to cancel the shipping, but if they an, most definitely swap the camera modules. Having those problems on the refurbished sucks. I could have fixed mine but I sent it in hoping Id get another one which didn't die after 2.5Hrs screen on time and 12 hours running time. Switch out the cameras if possible. I myself, if I get a bad one on saturday, I'll hate my descision but Im going to go for the 16GB nexus 4. Hate the limited storage and the on screen buttons that get in the way, but heck I'm not going to live 2 years with a faulty device

I can understand your frustration With my experience working foe Tmobile and having done countless warranty exchanges since the my touch, they will not return your original device. Unless you cannsomehowncontact ups and have them stop transit and send it back and return the one they sent you. You should contact tkobile again and tell them what happened. Afaik they will not return it back to you. When it gets to their processing center it'll get factory reset, processed and possibly put back up as a refurb if it passes all their tests. You do have the option of requesting another warranty exchange, possibly going to retention this time or a higher tier of tech support.

Thanks for the reply. I was wishing to talk to someone who works for them. I really hate the newer one they sent me. No matter what ROM, kernel, modem it lasts at most about 8 hours 2 hours screen on time. And the phone gets almost too hot to hold . If I didn't have an otter box, i prolly wouldn't be able to hold it. And the worst part is is the freaking screen spots. I get its a known issue with the super amoled but Christ the phones not been released even a year! Not to mention the o e I paid full price for was/is flawless despite the camera smudge.

I'd do that too. With the sgs2 I went through five warranty exchanges. They wouldn't offer me anything else because apparently it was the best phone they had even though they had the presale of the sgs3 going on when this happened. That's what drove me to sell it and buy a gnex. Long story short in back here.

Not enjoying this phone very much

Picked up the One about 6 weeks ago... immediately had issues with the camera in low-light, like most have had..
Then last week, out of the blue the phone got pretty hot, and discharged completely from 90% in about 75 minutes, even while powered off.. It never took another charge after that. Went to Verizon, got a replacement sent to me.
Replacement gets in last night, it's essentially DOA. 90% of the time it has a screen with colorful snow (think back when TVs didn't have a signal, you know MacGayver and the snow storm). So I called today to get a replacement for the replacement.
If the 3rd one in 6 weeks is also bad, I'm demanding a NEW phone from VZW, and I'm getting a different model. Advice welcome on the new model.
I would advise against this phone if you're thinking about it.

Sorry you've had bad luck, because this phone is pretty great. Most of us have NOT had the low light camera issues and what not. Hopefully the 3rd time is a charm for you. There are some other great phones out there too that are worth looking in to. I have a coworker with the Moto X and another one with the G2. Both were fun to mess around with. Wouldn't go with the X if you're worried about the camera much (it doesn't touch a functioning One camera) but other than that it's great. G2 was pretty neat too. Your isolated experience is not worth advising others to avoid the phone, though.

You really need to go to HTC first if having problems like that. Verizon just sends you a new phone and it's a 50/50 chance its DOA. HTC should test it before shipping back. Then you will know 100% that when you get the phone back it will be working properly.
Although I do find myself missing my sg4, and I will prob be getting sg5,
this phone is a beast, and I love it.
very solid.
HTC Sense 5.5 android 4.3 already here and stable.
beast mode all around.
you got some bad apples.
my phone luckily been solid since day 1
no camera issues, phone is perfect
I never order a new phone on line. I want to see it and mess with it to ensure it is fully functional. My mom recently wanted to move from an iPhone 4 to the One after seeing mine and my son's. We went to Best Buy and had to try 4 phones before finding one without the camera bug.
The sales idiot kept telling me that issue was on all One's. I covered my camera completly and showed him mine totally black screen unlike the first 3 he gave me which were purple when completly covering the camera. On the 4th one, I finally found a good one and shoved it in his face, I also made the comment that he needs to do his homework before arguing with a customer who obvioulsy knew a lot more about phones then he did.
I don't mind their ignornace until they speak to me like they are the "god of all phones" and I'm an uneducated idiot.
If the One is not your cup of tea, there are plenty of other choices out there. I think you just had some bad luck.

Got wrong tablet?

This is probably the wrong place to ask, but xda layout confuses me.
After waiting in anticipation for weeks, my package finally arrived in the mail. My heart skipped a beat when i saw the silverish bezel around the tablet edge. I flipped it over and much to my dismay, no camera. I ended up with a 2012 nexus 7!
Now it isn't like i was misinformed and order the wrong one. The listing on amazon clearly stated it was 2013 edition. However ive never had something like this happen before and i dont know what to do.
Ive sent both the seller and amazon an email but have yet to hear back from either.

What did you pay with? Paypal often replies quickly to issues like this, and I'm sure you could take it up with your credit card company as well, have them reverse the charge. Maybe link the listing below so others can see?
You blessedly
Clearly the wrong tablet.
Since there was a 'seller' involved how a return could be handled in different ways.
If the order was shipped (fulfilled) by Amazon, getting a return will be easy, or should be. The Nexus tablet I looked up on Amazon were all fulfilled by Amazon. So Amazon screwed up. But that makes things easy.
An email is not needed in this case.
Initiate a return and you will get return instructions on how to ship the wrong one back, and in a day or two they will ship you a new one. You will have a few weeks to get the new one back do if it takes a couple of weeks to get back to Amazon it will not cause a problem.
If it wasn't fulfilled by Amazon you have to see what the return policy is for that seller.
Go to the tablet you ordered on Amazon and click on the link for the seller and choose return policy. But typically it's contact the seller which you have done.

The seller name was qualityseller and the person who responded to my email was named Nathan.
He informed me that i could send it back for a full refund, or keep it and get refunded the difference between the 2012 and 2013 price. I decided to keep it as im not in the mood to play the mail waiting game and it works perfectly fine for what i need.

Wow, you give up so fast...

I think the sellers aim was selling that all along, he knew whoever bought something from "qualityseller" would be lazy to return it, and seriously, "Nathan"? I think you should return it and make a comment about this, give him a downvote, because he is definitely doing this on purpose.
If you don't mind me asking what was the difference between them money wise? Did you get the proper amount.
You're not missing much with the camera as it's not good. However I would be more concerned about the screen resolution between the two.
Put me down in the return it and get the 2013. Not that there is anything wrong with the 2012, but if you are just buying it now you will be keeping it for awhile and the 2013 is already what 6 months old? Clearly you wanted the 2013, so get it. It's worth it. I liked mine so much I bought one for a friend.
I would return it. Dakura is spot-on: the seller likely had 2012s he couldn't sell, resorting to a dirty trick.
My first-gen N7 was my first tablet, and like a lot of first cars, it's always special. (I wound up giving it to a friend so I could be assured of a good home.) But there's no comparison with the sharp display of the 2013.
Another vote for return it. While I liked my 2012 N7 in its day, the 13 is better in every way.
