Switching to T-Mobile from AT&T, some questions - T-Mobile LG G3

I have some questions regarding my process of switching over and also some basic questions:
I am receiving my T-mob sim card tomorrow
I have backed up my apps only via Titanium Backup. Do i need to back up system files too or will apps only back up suffice?
Will the new sim card automatically update all APNs or do I have to manually change it to get LTE?
Will I be receiving Android & G3 software updates automatically still?
If there are cool T-mobile apps, how will i get them on my phone?
Is it safe to delete everything AT&T related off of my phone?
Thanks in advance, I was happy to find that after unlock, my AT&T variant will work with T-mobile.

Im affraid LTE wont work for you unless you have an unlocked phone. Originally factory unlocked. Their LTE bands are different, so you will be stuck to "3G". I know, it sucks.
If it is not a carrier locked phone, then just reboot it with the sim on and it shoudl pick up the right LTE config. TiBu restore/backup wont be needed it if you are using the same phone. ATT apps, some of them wont work. Dont have to install any Tmo apps, i would only do "Visual Voicemail.

Not sure why you would want the tmob bloat-ware. It should be installable through the playstore though. AT&T stuff can be frozen/deleted. I believe it was mentioned before that deleting it doesn't actually free up any space so it doesn't matter. To my understanding you should be able to throw in the sim card and it should work.
I am not sure what you are asking about backing up the apps. Swapping the simcard shouldn't require any app back ups.

Thanks so much. Yes there is someone on ebay unlocking phones for less than 2 dollars, amazing deal compared to websites that charge you 50! So I got it carrier unlocked. and i don't know why i backed it up, you're right!
Lastly do you know anything about getting software updates after I join T-Mobile?

I wouldn't do any carrier updates if the phone is the att variant.

I don't know if I trust a 2 dollar sim unlock off eBay, especially an att phone. Att are d!cks about unlocking their phones. Juat fyi.

It worked. They email you the unlock code within minutes and you unlock it yourself. It was very simple

I would avoid updates. OTA updates are device specific. Being on the carrier now does not change your device.

im not sure if ATT will push you their updates. If they do, and you are not rooted, you can update it. If you are rooted, you need to install ROMs that are on the AT&T forum, if you can ever do that. I knwo some of them have a locked bootloader. Keep thinking of it as a ATT phone even if you are on another network. Good thing though is you can now sell it for higher value should you want to switch to a tmo phone. I'd recommend that since you will get full LTE.

This is the best answer. Thank you very much.
I wonder if there is any confirmation that I will continue getting updates from AT&T. If so, I guess I'll have to unroot which sucks since I will lose my precious G3 Tweakbox. Would manually inputting APN not unlock full LTE speed? Not familiar with APN other than for correcting text messaging app problems.

If he isn't unlocked he won't get anything 3g or other wise. If he is unlocked ( if at&t won't unlock it imei-unlocked costs 6 bucks) he will get 4g/lte.

No. It is locked at the hardware level. They are talking that one day they will be able to, but i dont think anytime soon. IMO, trade yoru phone, you will only suffer whenever you are outside and the internet loads slow. or do speed test and see if you are in a area where both LTE bands are the same. who knows, might be good.

Again if he unlocks it he will get LTE just fine. I have both variants d850 and d851 and the d850 unlocked works just fine on T-Mobile
And the poster above me is correct that you wont receive os updates from at&T while a tmobile sim is in it

@bkeaver is right, I just got the SIM card delivered and I updated the data/text APN from:
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2090#android
and I am in DC and getting great LTE speeds. First time unlocking a locked phone (less than $2 from an ebay guy, instead of $20-50 from those unlocking websites), and switching carriers. It was a great experience to learn from.

No, you will not receive any AT&T update having T-Mobile APN and Simcard.

Aaanadie is correct. Your phone isnt on AT&T anymore so it will not receive the updates. Now what you might be able to do is grab the ota from someone and load it that way manually but it wont otherwise be able to on its own
Likewise with the T-Mobile updates. Their network wont recognize your device as a valid device to push updates to and i really would not advise you to try to load those updates manually. Only updates made for your device should only be loaded on your device. Make sense?

I got mine unlocked via the $2 eBay auction. Nothing to worry about, got code almost instantly.

That's incorrect, I ran an At&t S3 on tmo and had really fast lte. As long as you have the phone sim unlocked and the correct lte apn for tmo, you'll be fine.

AT&T 3G data network on the T-Mobile G2

Hello everyone, this is my first thread so please be gentle!
I currently have a G1, and hope to put it to rest very soon, and get the new G2!
(staying true to the "G")
I use an AT&T sim card on my current G1.
I have been lurking (for quite some time now) on these forums trying to find an answer to using the AT&T Sim Card on the G2. I have yet to find my answer through searching.
The capabilities I'm looking for to use on a G2 with an AT&T sim card include:
at least 3G network data speeds
normal use of calling
(I live in the US, and I don't know if that allows me to have 3G instead of EDGE)
Some things I have found:
In one other forum it said the AT&T would work on the G2, however it would only work on the EDGE network. (which I believe is 2G? please clarify if you can)
"
TMO's 3G network runs on the 1700Mhz spectrum.
AT&T's 3G network runs on the 850 and 1900Mhz spectrum.
The G2 is incapable of operating on AT&T's 3G network but will work just fine on the EDGE network.
"
the "[Guide] Subsidy Unlock, SuperCID, and Radio S-OFF" presents a sim unlock, so would that mean I could use the 3G data networks on AT&T? and have local calling? or is that something else?
Thanks in advance!
The Subsidy Unlock would allow the use of the AT&T sim card. I'm quite sure you wouldn't get the 3G+ speeds. Edge only, just like the G1.

That was from someone in the sim unlock thread. Not sure if any network chosen means 2g/3g but I would think 3g would be supported.

It isn't just your phone, I don't think any phones ever come out with the correct bands for ATT and Tmobile...Even the N1 which is supposed to be a world phone was only EDGE on ATT
The T-Mobile G2 will not work with 3G on AT&T (as you stated in the original post, the 3G or UMTS bands are different). It will instead use the regular GSM bands for 2G data.
If you want a Desire Z that works on AT&T's 3G, you have to get the NAM version offered by Bell Canada (check out the Desire Z forums). Once unlocked, it'll work fine on AT&T's 3G network.

Actually, Nokia's latest smartphones are pentaband - they can use 3G on AT&T, T-Mobile, and the European networks. This includes the C7, N8, and upcoming E7.
I have the N8 right now and have used it on both AT&T and T-Mobile with 3G.

I have a NAM Unbranded/Unlocked version that I am using on AT&T as well. I purchased mine on Ebay, it was a little cheaper than buying it through Negri (which also didn't have any when I purchased mine)
Definitely works on 3G AND can be used with a 'dumb-phone' data plan ($10/month unlimited) =D

How do you get the $10/mo data plan? I don't have that option!
Yeah I know this is going a little off topic (sorry mods)
but I think he's talking about individual unlimited data plan for "basic" phones?
I kept trying to pester AT&T about it.
So is it true you don't need the DataPro plan in order to acheive 3G data networks with smartphones?
And you can use the "basic" unlimited data plan for cheaper for the same 3G networks?
The AT&T reps kept saying otherwise.
Thanks again all for the replies!

I have a family plan with an Iphone line (sister). My phone (originally a BB when contract signed) and 2 Dumbphones (parents)
What I did was, take my SIM card, and put it into one of the dumbphones. Went into ATT and had them add unlimited Data to that line at the $10 option. (And cancel the BB services since I wasn't using the phone anymore - told them I sold it on CL) Went home and returned the SIM into my BB and I was all set to go with unlimited Data. The only thing that didn't work with the BB was the push Email services...
If you go to your online account with ATT it will show you an image of the device you are using with service and although it showed my device as a BB at the time, (after returning the SIM to the BB) the $10 plan continued to work without any hitches.
Now that I have a phone that is unbranded with an IMEI # that ATT doesn't recognize, they don't have an image for my phone, so they have no way to detect that I am using a smartphone.
I have used the $10 plan with many devices: BB, Touch Pro, Nokia E71, etc and have never had any problems.

Yes that is the plan that I am referring to and yes the reps are full of crap. ATT wants to charge you more for having a 'smartphone' even though you use the exact same data, frequencies, and service as other users. There are many ways around this, but going into an AT&T store and trying to 'reason' with them is not one. I suggest the method I used with a dumbphone. Alternatively, you can do the same process online through account manager without having to deal with a live person.
Side question here. I'm thinking about giving the G2 to a friend on AT&T. The thing is that he doesn't want to pay for a data plan. Will AT&T force a data plan onto the line? Also un checking data enabled, will that stop all data over the cellular network so he doesnt get charged at all?

I don't think they can force a data plan as the phone is not being subsidized by ATT because of a contract.
In theory disabling data will stop all data but in reality he will probably still use a bit of it. Search the forums as I remember another user having the issue of zero data use.

I finally did the whole unlock, super CID thing using gfree and adb.
Just want to make that no one has found a way to get 3G speeds on the G2?
Or is EDGE my only choice? I understand the whole band thing as well.
No. From what I've gathered on the g2 being on at&t, its impossible as the radio hardware is different and will not pick up the 3g bands. Flashing a different radio to match up the bands won't work, either (it will possibly brick your phone, actually.)
Go with the NAM Desire Z from bell canada. Its your best bet.

[Q] Tmobile customer traveling to Canada

Hey everyone- not new to the community but i need some help in figuring out what exactly needs to be done for me to get service in Toronto.
I have tmobile and i refuse to pay the roaming charges they have for Canada- I plan to use a telus or rogers prepaid sim. Which one should i choose and why? i am only there for the weekend too so dont need a bunch of minutes or anything.
Also- i have put in a request to get my phone unlocked through tmobile. Once i have it unlocked- do i just pop in either a Telus or Rogers SIM and be on my way? or is there more to it such as flashing a specific radio??
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Can't help you regarding which operator to pick . I can however tell you that once you receive the network unlock code , simply pop in the SIM card and move on. That's all there is to it.
yup it's that easy
just punch in the unlock code and you are done
you can use any network you want, since our phone is Pentaband, it will work with any operator with a SIM card in Canada
might want to turn of auto DATA sync as it will eat up your pre-paid in record time
data charges are ridiculous on pre-paid cards, so use manual sync for only the stuff you need to find/get
Thanks for the reply guys- I received the unlock code from Tmobile today and applied it using an ATT sim card.
So i dont have to flash any modems/radios? saw something in another thread about that or is that strictly to gain 3g/4g speeds on those carriers?

Need Help Getting Sprint Network on Verizon Note 2

Okay, I'm sure the information is all out there, so before I get told to search forums or google, I have. My issue is that I'm just having the hardest time putting all the scattered information together and understanding it. There's too much information to decipher whats needed, accurate andd up to date for my situation. So I was wondering if someone whose done this before could just give me the straight to guide.
I have verizon, my girlfriend has sprint. She broke her S4. I have an old verizon note 2 that is unlocked, rooted, custom recovery and on CM11.
What I need to do is get it on the sprint network and get her service switched over to it.
I know it has something to do with APN settings, but there's so many different ones whether it's for internet and MMS. I basically just want her to be able to use it to make phone calls and maybe regular texts. I got all confused when I saw things dealing with PRL and what not, so I don't actually know which things I need to make this work.
I put the sim card from her S4 into my Verizon note 2 and opened the access point settings under mobile network. There are a bunch of sprint ones in there now, I don't know which one to choose. I tried the one just labeled "Sprint" and then rebooted to get the APN settings to switch over but I still have no service to try and activate the phone.
So could someone please give me a simplified walk-through of putting in sprint's settings on a verizon note 2. I tried flashing a Sprint CM11 rom but it failed. So now i am going to try flashing a sprint touchwiz rom to see if that will make all the necessary changes for me.
Update: I Just finished flashing jellybomb touchwiz rom, it flashed but wont get into the phone setup, says there's an encryption error and the phone needs to be reset. I did that and it still does the same.
Thanks in advance guys, I've flashed a lot of roms, I've just never switched my phone to another carrier before.
You can't activate a non Sprint branded phone on the Sprint network. Period. The esn is not in the Sprint database and even if you wanted to use the phone strictly for traveling internationally, The sim card from Sprint will not work in the Verizon phone for the same reason. You'd have to "clone" the phone/esn and that is completely illegal. I would spend my time on craigslist or Facebook and try to trade your Verizon phone for a Sprint one. That's what I would do.
FYI . Verizon phones are actually in demand due to the much larger customer base so making a trade for a Sprint S4 or Note 2 should be fairly easy. But MAKE SURE you check the ESN with Sprint before making a trade because a blacklisted esn phone can NOT be activated and you will be SOL.
So only networks like at&t and T-mobile will work on my Unlocked verizon phone?

If you're referring to your Verizon phone being a "world phone" which does in fact have a sim card and gsm network capabilities, then technically yes it would perhaps be possible to get it to work on AT&T or T-Mobile onl;y but it would be very difficult and time consuming to unlock the sim portion of the Verizon phone and hack it so that it would not be rejected by either network due to the ESN. You'd have better luck trying T-Mobile because they seem to be more lax with unbranded iPhones etc on their network. But in all honesty you would be better off trading your Verizon phone especially if it has a clear esn and getting a phone that's ready to go with no headaches and fully functional on the network.

[Q] Porting rooted Sprint G2 to Verizon

First, my apologies if this subject is already covered. I couldn't find anyone with a similar situation.
I have a Sprint G2 that I rooted and it is running CMod 11. I want to switch it to Verizon. I tried taking the phone to the Verizon store and they could not activate it for Verizon. I assume the phone is unlocked however because it activated just fine for Sprint and the Sprint guy told me that's an indication of being unlocked. True? Not sure.
The Verizon guys told me that I need to hack the radio frequencies of the phone before it would work with Verizon. I don't know where the settings are for this though. I already tried the trick of deleting 'Spr' out of a certain system file and I effectively bricked the phone. That didnt work and luckily I was able to revert to the stock rom.
My question is this: Can I get the phone to work with Verizon simply by flashing Verizon CMod to it? Or is it easy to find the settings for the radio frequencies that I need to change? Do I get any data once all is said and done? I don't look forward to unrooting and restoring the stock ROM JUST to hear Sprint say "Oh well we don't want to unlock it for you."

The G2 is only compatible with Verizon's 3G network. I doubt our radios work on the Verizon variant for LTE. Also, the IMEI would need to be whitelisted on Verizon's database. There's no other way around it. Better off selling the LS980 and buying a VS980 for Verizon.

1) no because the IMEI isn't in verizon's database / white listed
2) hardware for the radio is different then verizon's and you will be unable to get lte at all from it.
3) I would just restore to 100% stock (tot) and then sell it and then buy the Verizon version
i have inverse issue
well i bought a verizon variant, only because it was the only one with next day air delivery... I didnt do any research other than seeing that they had the same model number of 980 i figured a radio change and maybe rom change. i tried flashing a sprint rom on it it wont finish the install. do i need to get a sprint sim?
i might be interested in trading that sprint g2 for my verizon g2

[Q] Verizon LG G4 on Straight Talk Help

I recently purchased an LG G4 from Verizon to use on Straight Talk. I have tried Checking For Update many times to receive the OTA. Does anyone know why I can't seem to pull the update? Thank you in advance for any help on this!
What version are you on right now?

It's possible that Verizon hasn't pushed the update out to Straight Talk customers yet. Have you tried manually searching for updates? You can also download verizon's update utility and should be able to manage manually updating with your PC.
Also, what makes you want to take the update so badly? Nothing noticeably changes, plus you're jeopardizing your ability to root in the coming weeks.

I had the S5 and as soon as I sold it to my friend and he put his Verizon SIM in, he got that update. Was wondering if maybe it was a Verizon/Straight Talk issue. I read about what the update did, but was hoping it might help the touch issue a little. Thank you tho..I will consider waiting or try the veizon software after work today.
If anyone was able to successfully set up their Verizon LG G4 on straight talk, please help me out because I absolutely can't figure out how
I don't get this thread, Straight Talk says the Verizon G4 is incompatible with their service. I'm assuming OP is saying it works? What kind of speeds do you get with Straight Talk LTE on Verizon?

As far as I know ST doesnt really know what devices are connecting to their network, so as long as you have a clean ESN device compatible with their network, popping in the SIM should work just fine. If you really wanted to try you could probably ask for them to unbox a G4 in store and pop your own sim in to see if it connects.

I have no idea why ST says this is incompatible, it works fine. They told me that too.

(P.s: If u want root id update to nonrooted first then flash the rooted one)
P.s.s: ill also post a link to the kdz just in case u need to unroot/unbrick)
Use at your own risk tho
LG G4 works on ST/Verizon if you use their CDMA kit. The only downside is speed is limited to 5mbps.

What speeds would one get with a Verizon plan?

Wow...I didn't realize Verizon limited ST to 5Mbps... I just did a Speedtest with my ATT SIM on "H" and got 11+! I guess that answers my question about trying to switch over to a Verizon SIM!
Here I am fighting to get my G4's IMEI Cleared and usable on ST's page and it's really pointless anyway!

The 5 is not the speed of the phone on the network, it is the limit of data usage for the 30 days before they throttle you back to 2G speed.

That's not what they said... 5GB monthly limit != 5Mbps Speed Throttle...
I've been on ST for a couple years, I'm well aware of the Bandwidth limit and the following 2G throttle. (I've only been throttled once)
This was one of the things that kept me on ST(ATT) instead of switching to Cricket because I heard they Throttle to 8Mbps for LTE and 4Mbps for HSPA
I have been able to use the Verizon Update Assistant to upgrade my LG G4 on Straight Talk. The only thing so far that does not work is Advance Calling. In order to get VUA to work I had to turn of Developer Options for the program to see my phone. Unable to active it. This maybe an issue with Straight Talk, as I never looked at it before now. The update also changed my Software Status back to Official from Modified.
