[Q] Google Maps doesn't show accurate position - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'll try to be very short.
Sygic locates GPS+Data very fast, less than 5 seconds, I think, with very good accuracy.
Google Maps doesn't point my exact location, even after minutes. Only shows me a region of 20km radius with a center like >1km from my actual position. On GPS or GPS+Data.
WTH is wrong with this app?

Ive had that happen before on my note 3. It's was just a bug in the app. Have you tried device GPS only? Also try clearing the cache and data in google maps to see if that helps.

I tried this one after I realized that my GPS was too slow. Sygic was fixing after minutes too.
But than, put the right settings on FasterGPS and it worked flawlessly.
But Google Maps didn't work. Tried data and cache clearing and nothing. I guess I will have to live with this bug.

So .. None of this tweaks worked. I'm really worried about this thing. There are a lot of apps that use Maps API for positioning. If anybody has a trick on this area please let me know.

What does app gps test say, how long to get a fix? How many satellites do you see, are using?

Still Maps shows me a 20km radius circle after a few minutes.
This happens on Maps and apps that use Maps API like mandicmagic
Sygic which is my GPS app fixes as fast as GPS test

Do you use a privacy app App Ops? For a long time I couldn't get Maps to pin point me. I wouldn't even get the little ! Shape in the left hand corner. Then I went back in to App Ops and found that I had turned off the location settings for Google Play services and Google Search I believe. Once I turned those back on I was able to get a lock in seconds.
Sent from my tf700t using Tapatalk

mine was taking a while also until i uninstalled maps, cleared all data, and use the gps app to reset the gps. it is much faster now, but it does take a good 2-5 seconds to get accurate position.

Damn it! Second time I had a problem due to App Ops. lol
Thanks for point me out Google Play Services. I thought that enabling for Google Maps would have been enough and
GPServices have gotten lost on the bottom of App Ops list due to the previous disabling.
The problem is that with Google Play Services Location enabled any app could call Maps and drain the battery.
Will check if this will affect battery life. not sure.
thanks!

That's why I disabled it the first time. I was getting crazy wake locks from it too. But since I've reactivated the location services I haven't really noticed and abnormal battery drain.

Same as title, does anyone have a clue?
If you mean to get it working, it should work straigth out of the box, just go outside, start google maps and wait. First time might take a while before it gets a lock on the satelites though.. and check if quickGPS' data hasn't expired (start it under programs)..

Nope, unless your using A-GPS
or google maps
Sorry that I asked this stupid question. I thought it only has A-GPS. Since every time I start Google Map, it is using A-GPS.
Having agps allows us to have both gps and agps. Programs like TomTom works well with our gps chip, and does not require internet.
does anyone know where i can download quick gps?
its built into the rom. Look in windows.
Strange thing... After a clean ROM install, setting in Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3 (beside other settings) to disable A-GPS, soft resetting , I start Google Earth but nothing else and... surprise! It show me my position!!! And I'm sure (if anyone ask) the GPS is not in use. Well, how is that? And this happen third time now! Is there an alternate solution to verify/disable the A-GPS? Because I'm sure that's the reason for GE knowing my position. Any ideea?

Check for this registry key:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\SUPL AGPS\DefaultSetting]
"EnableAGPS"=dword:00000001
Setting it to 0 will disable A-GPS.
Thanks for the tip but.... I've checked the reg: it was 0. Just in case one softreset then:
Step1-check the reg: is 0 (again)
Step2-check the ACT: disabled
Step3-start GoogleMaps: I got my position!
Step4-check the GPS settings: off (why am I not surprised?)
WTF?

Speachless...
I may be wrong, but i think its using the network to show your position. You can see the 'circle' around the 'blue dot'.the blue dot is not really your position, but the ctr of the circle. So it literally means u somewhere in the that circle.
So i dont think that google maps was giving your position, unless u happen to be near your network mast or whatever. Once you enable GPS, it will try to get ur location frm the satellites.
To Yotsclee: when using google maps, select 'USE GPS' from Menu.Look further down on post #12
Hope that helps
well, i may be wrong as well...

Manish is right. If the phone was using the real GPS chip, it would show a small circle since it is more precise.

perhaps an idea
go to settings and find external gps-<select the 3rd tab and deselect the option to use GPS automatic.
now it will use GPS only, if you press the button Gpsin your Google maps.
Google Maps will always start a data connection because none of the maps are stored on your phone. This will occur even with A-GPS disabled.
Google not using GPS
Hi everybody,
if I remember right, in that case Google is using the GSM cell information from your handy to position you.
It is not using GPS at all as long as it is turned off. That is just optional.
If you are within several cells it uses signal strength of each cell to get you positioned better. So within a city you will probably get a rather exact position. In the wild it will be a larger circle...
To clear things up.
When you first load Google Maps the locate me is based on your current cell.
Your phone tells google "Hi I'm on 234-12345" and Google then has a look in it's massive database and goes, "Oh, people who use that cell tend to be located around 52 deg 48' 40.30" N, 1 deg 13' 55.33" E, but with a margin of error of about 1 mile"
Your phone then puts a blue dot at the spot and places the blue circle a mile around your location.
Google does not use multiple cells to trianglate your location, they just use the one cell.
Then when you enable the GPS (via the menu), your phone tells Google Maps "actually I'm at 52 deg 48' 40.50" N, 1 deg 13' 54.78" E", this then removes the blue circle and moves the blue dot to the correct location.
What also happens is that your phone tells Google "BTW I'm on cell 234-12345 and my location is 52 deg 48' 40.50" N, 1 deg 13' 54.78" E". Google then decide with all this data (plus all the others on the same cell) whether they need to move or adjust their original statement for those without GPS.

GPS Nav

What is the best GPS navigation software for the S3? Google ruined theirs when they removed street names and Maps appears to be part of the ROM because it can not be uninstalled or else I would use the previous version.
You can remove system apps. Just takes root and a capable file explorer.
But I use a combo between Waze and Scout from the makers of Telenav

I use Google Maps. I have tried a couple of different mapping apps, but I always return to Google Maps. I'm a service tech and I do a lot of driving. I have all of the street names and the local streets appear to get updated fairly quickly. What I would like to see is multi-stop routing, or shown where to go to use multi-stop routing in Google Maps.
I typically use Scout and Google Maps. (Navigation) Both work well. I'm rooted running The Peoples Rom. But as was stated, google updates fairly often.

Can you create the route on the PC using Google Maps in Chrome and then use Chrome 2 Phone to send the route to your device?
Aw come on, having street names is overrated anyway . Uninstall it with Titanium Backup and reinstall it from the market. That's weird. Mine has street names just fine.
I keep Google Maps on my phone because of the Google Now integrated and offline maps capabilities. But I do also have Waze and Scout installed for good measure.

Probably. Unfortunately, I don't get my entire route until about 15 minutes into my first call. Then the route is kinda dynamic. Calls are added and removed throughout the day.

Hehehe.... it's not all that bad. We have routers in our trucks, panasonic toughbooks and intranet access. But no internet. The calls come and go due to "load balancing". 16 of us do refrigeration in a very large area (from Williamsburg, Va to the Outer Banks, NC) so evening out the load becomes a necessity, especially if a tech gets stuck on a job that takes longer than anticipated or a tech gets a run of really, really fast calls (ie- "not-at-home" or "It's now working").

[APP][Alpha2][Jan 09 2015] Wear GPS

Out of curiosity I quickly put together Wear GPS test app.
It uses build-in GPS only! (Doesn't matter if you connected or disconnected)
Huge thanks to satstat [email protected] https://github.com/mvglasow/satstat for the implementation of SNR and Gps position views.
Install it on your phone and it will sync mobile app. Phone app is solely for installation/uninstallation.
Please let me know how your gps behaves. Mine is really strange - sometimes will fix quickly at home and sometimes outside just jumps between 11/20 to 0/20 to 4/20 to 12/20 withing 5 secs
I guess this attributes to zigzaging track.
Operation - Scroll face right to get into Sat positions view and then left to get back, Long press to exit.

0.1 Initial release
Cool! nice app!
BTW, speaking of jumps, look at the graphs for pace I got with "my tracks" during my last test. As you can see there are a lot of times when the gps signal is lost. This does not happen when I use my tracks in my nexus 5.
This is cool. maybe you could give Runtastic and Endomodo some tips. I haven't found a running app that works with the native GPS yet, they all seem to only work if the phone is tethered to the watch during a run.
didnt find a fitting thread but you look like haveing a plan bout gps...
Im more paranoid user and was wondering, if I turn the gps of my phone, does this also entirely disable the gps module of my smartwatch?
And if the answer is "no" how can this total disable of gps be acchieved?
It looks to work fine on my SWR50.
What I'm missing is a page with ALTITUDE, BEARING, DOP, SATS written in BIG, since on the 1st screen is VERY very difficult to read while you are moving (too small text).
Can you?

FANTASTIC: great job.
Maybe fonts size could be even bigger in page 3.
Thanks a lot: bravo!
great app!
font sice could be a littel bit greater, and is it show the satellites number?
the app itself works like a charm, except if i do a screenshot at the android wear manager, the app closes - but that happens with ervery app if i try to make a screenshot.
my swr50 has no hopping at all, just the altitude is too high (approx. 40 meters), but that is even the case if i open the developer menue.
Altitude is what GPS reports, but it is not reliable at low altitudes, better on a plane.
With app closure it is wear 5.0 feature I believe, but I plan to implement persistent notification in app closure. Once i find some free time - I'll do it...
Bumping an old thread, but still relevant at least ; loaded it on to my new SW3, and seems to work great. Only complaint of course is can't do the swipe to close; not the end of the world, but would be a good future improvement.
Still, thanks for the work!
When a 0.3 release?

I've looked thoroughly into the settings to figure out what may be causing your issue and the only thing I can think is that your location data is being denied to the widget, but I don't know how to fix or check that because the widget doesn't show in any of the settings. Maybe something in the location settings is turned off. Sorry I can't be of more help!
Edit: Go into Settings then Apps, click the cog wheel(top right), click app permissions(top option), click location, click 3 dot button(top right), click show system, scroll down to pixel launcher and turn it to on. See if that fixes it.

Unfortunately that didn't do it and neither did a reflash of the ROM. However your suggestions got me thinking and I downloaded a mock location app and interestingly all locations except my very own show the weather. Im suspecting for some reason or another the location data for my area is not being shown by Google and I suspect this may not be just for me but with no other pixels around it's hard to know. Im waiting to travel out of my area and see if my suspicions are correct and it will make sense seeing it just happened out of the blue. Now the question is how do I report such a specific fault to google and not have to wait 5 years for a fix.

If you have a Pixel you can get support on the web via chat or email or request a call back. Yours sounds like a problem they may be able to help with. Just out of curiosity does your GPS app work ok?
