What is the best GPS navigation software for the S3? Google ruined theirs when they removed street names and Maps appears to be part of the ROM because it can not be uninstalled or else I would use the previous version.
You can remove system apps. Just takes root and a capable file explorer.
But I use a combo between Waze and Scout from the makers of Telenav

I use Google Maps. I have tried a couple of different mapping apps, but I always return to Google Maps. I'm a service tech and I do a lot of driving. I have all of the street names and the local streets appear to get updated fairly quickly. What I would like to see is multi-stop routing, or shown where to go to use multi-stop routing in Google Maps.
I typically use Scout and Google Maps. (Navigation) Both work well. I'm rooted running The Peoples Rom. But as was stated, google updates fairly often.

Can you create the route on the PC using Google Maps in Chrome and then use Chrome 2 Phone to send the route to your device?
Aw come on, having street names is overrated anyway . Uninstall it with Titanium Backup and reinstall it from the market. That's weird. Mine has street names just fine.
I keep Google Maps on my phone because of the Google Now integrated and offline maps capabilities. But I do also have Waze and Scout installed for good measure.

Probably. Unfortunately, I don't get my entire route until about 15 minutes into my first call. Then the route is kinda dynamic. Calls are added and removed throughout the day.

Hehehe.... it's not all that bad. We have routers in our trucks, panasonic toughbooks and intranet access. But no internet. The calls come and go due to "load balancing". 16 of us do refrigeration in a very large area (from Williamsburg, Va to the Outer Banks, NC) so evening out the load becomes a necessity, especially if a tech gets stuck on a job that takes longer than anticipated or a tech gets a run of really, really fast calls (ie- "not-at-home" or "It's now working").

Agree, fantastic tool.

So, except for google maps and youtube videos what other uses for ChromeToPhone are there?
Well, you can push any link to your phone and not depend on QR codes. I think thats cool. Just an example, you come across a nice picture you want to use as a wallpaper. Just push a button, beats fiddling with bluetooth/usb after DLing or even using a QR code generator.
Totally agree!
This's just amazing!

You're able to dial a phone numbers. You just have to select the phone number in the browser then click on the button. It'll directly send it to your phone and open the dialer application.
Also you're able to select a text and after you click the button in the browser it will be copied in your Android clipboard
Totally! I've used it a couple of times today already.
The fact that it sends maps straight to Google Maps on the phone is gonna be super handy for trips.
I was looking for this. Awesome tool!
It is cool, but it needs to be able to go the other way too.
How many times have you clicked on a page that's slow or cumbersome on your phone, one that's just better suited to your laptop browser? Would be so handy to be able to send from phone to chrome.
It was raised on the code.google site but they said they're not working on it

yep, tried it yesterday on mozilla firefox and it works great

It is a puch service so your phone doesn't actively check for the links sent to the phone but it is pushed to the phone and then the phone downloads it.
Just how the push email works.
Clever stuff!
Can you use it for file transfer, eg put the file into dropbox, copy the shared link, Chrome2Phone and download from the phone's browser?
EDIT: Just realised, there's a Dropbox app, er, for that.

And maybe I should ask this on the Maps brut thread, but when sending a link from google maps it opens in stock Maps app instead of Maps brut (which I chose for default), if I uninstall stock Maps app it just won't load the link.
Does anyone knows a way to launch maps links with Maps brut?

That said, new google maps (FINALLY) has caching... so whilst not a perfect solution, it should work OK for small areas.

I didn't like it very much. The interface was a bit whacky and It is not very proactive in respect to setting addresses. It will not predict you simply have to type it all in. Navigon is free and offline and seems to be better for me and looks a lot more professional. Check it out karl999999 it's downloadable from the market for Australia at least. If not use market enabler and set your sim as Telstra AU then go back to market and try

for most people navigon is not free.
and you can not compare using navigon with a trick, to navit which is free and opensource.
navit is developed by a small group, if you have ideas goto to their wiki and post your suggestions.
I haven't really tried Navit while driving.
It is a pity the Cloudmade maps do not work any more. Pity, because you could download the whole of Europe and place it on the external SD. I think I'll wait updating until this is fixed.
I was not able to find a decent changelog on the Navit site. Pity. And searching for addresses is indeed not so easy, but the biggest problem is that the default country is the locale setting of the phone. It would be a lot better if it remembered the last choice.
That said, Navdroyd is not perfect either. It looks more refined, but Navdroyd had a very confusing user interface too. It routes well however and the price is okay.
I'm missing gpsmid (also open source) that I used on my Sony-Ericsson c702. Also problems with maps (couldn't be too large) but good address search and a nice displayed track to check where you have been walking. Routing was ok too. There was a start made porting that to Android using J2MEpolish but it seems to have died down.
Now I'm still looking for a walkaround GPS program, like a handheld receiver that shows a track where I've been and some waypoints I've set. If possible with an offline Openstreetmap background. Haven't fount it yet. Navdroyd does not display a track, but worse is that when panning the map it switches off the GPS, and I have to select menu - my location - show my location again.

Is that map extractor any good? ive noticed that a single town block is the same 47mb size as the whole of sydney, and all of australia is 116mb? odd?

Google Music is onlyavailable in the USA. Is there a similar service in Canada?
Thanks
Once you have created an account (do it on your computer thru a proxy), you will be able to use Google Music in Canada. You can't buy music but you can still stream/download for offline use.
There is a guide how to use Google music outside of US here in xda. I followed that guide and using Google music in Korea.

I was able to use proxy very easily. Using Firefox browser, a plugin called "stealthy" is used, and is visible, once installed in the top right corner of your screen. When you want the proxy turned on, click the stealth bomber and it turns green. Want it off? Click it again and it turns red!
I am able to go to google music anytime using this method, and works flawlessly!

Or basically anywhere you would normally get music before Google Music popped onto the scene only a few short months ago. Odd question.
I use Microsoft Zune. Music is generally cheaper than other places and the UI is great. My sister and I buy a Zune pass together. The music is DRM protected, but there are ways around that...

Mainly iTunes but that's due to a lack of options. I always check hmvdigital.ca first though and if it's the same price there, I'll get it from there instead of iTunes. hmvdigital songs are for the most part 320kpbs and are DRM free and you can download them again and again as many times as you want.

Is this still working for you? I have been using the services in Canada without issue until today, now the Music Manager won't upload additional songs. Methinks Google may have caught on.
I use 7digital. They have a Canadian store and an Android app so you can buy right to the phone if you like. The stuff I've purchased has been 320kbps DRM-free. Easy as pie.
I've been using Google music in Canada since it launched with absolutely no issues. I used a program to fake my IP for the invite, as far as I know you no longer need an invite now. Music manager works flawlessly as well, overall the whole setup is beautiful and I love it.

Google Maps Gets A Huge Update To v8.0 With Better Offline Maps Management, Lane Guidance In Navigation, And More [APK Download]
What's New
Before we dig in, here's what's new in v8.0. Items in italics are not on Play Store list.
Turn-by-turn navigation now displays distance, arrival time, and quick access to alternate routes
Save and manage offline maps in a custom list for when you're traveling or have a slow connection
Transit results now display total walking time of your trip and the next scheduled bus or train
Sign in to see your “Places to review” list from recently saved or searched-for places
If you have the Uber app installed, open it right from Google Maps when comparing route options
Bug fixes
Lane guidance in navigation mode (US and parts of Canada/Japan)
Adjust and name offline maps before saving
Search filters (price rating, open, from circles)
The Navigation app gets a slight UI tweak this time that brings it more in line with Google's new aesthetic. Navigation also includes easier access to alternative routes and other relevant data about your trip. For some reason, Google didn't include lane assistance in the changelog.

I'll try to be very short.
Sygic locates GPS+Data very fast, less than 5 seconds, I think, with very good accuracy.
Google Maps doesn't point my exact location, even after minutes. Only shows me a region of 20km radius with a center like >1km from my actual position. On GPS or GPS+Data.
WTH is wrong with this app?
Ive had that happen before on my note 3. It's was just a bug in the app. Have you tried device GPS only? Also try clearing the cache and data in google maps to see if that helps.

But Google Maps didn't work. Tried data and cache clearing and nothing. I guess I will have to live with this bug.

Do you use a privacy app App Ops? For a long time I couldn't get Maps to pin point me. I wouldn't even get the little ! Shape in the left hand corner. Then I went back in to App Ops and found that I had turned off the location settings for Google Play services and Google Search I believe. Once I turned those back on I was able to get a lock in seconds.

mine was taking a while also until i uninstalled maps, cleared all data, and use the gps app to reset the gps. it is much faster now, but it does take a good 2-5 seconds to get accurate position.

Damn it! Second time I had a problem due to App Ops. lol
Thanks for point me out Google Play Services. I thought that enabling for Google Maps would have been enough and
GPServices have gotten lost on the bottom of App Ops list due to the previous disabling.
The problem is that with Google Play Services Location enabled any app could call Maps and drain the battery.
Will check if this will affect battery life. not sure.
