[Q] HTC Advantage Replacement Phone - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using the $29 HTC Advantage program to get a refurbished phone after scratching my phone's screen.
I'm currently rooted so I assume I should go back to stock. I have two questions:
1. Should I bother going back to S-On? I remember reading somewhere that some phones shipped with S-On so manufacturers usually don't look at that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong; I'll go back to S-On if you guys think it might be an issue.
2. They told me they'll automatically charge me for any more damage on my phone outside of the screen damage. I have the typical scratches around the corner of my phone from drops. Should I expect to be charged for those scratches?
Thanks in advance.

1) Its completely up to you but ive heard stories of htc charging $199 when they had it s-off.
I had a firewater'd s-off/rooted m8 and i just restored, used a ruu. got rid of tampered banner and red text. And changed s-off to s-on. Doing this i had no issues using the $29 method to get a new one and they never said anything. MAKE sure your completely stock before changing it to s-on or you could have a $600 metal brick.
2)Mine had a few nicks from running naked and dropping it 2 feet onto concrete and being rough with it. They gave me a brand new refurbished m8 no questions asked. So no i dont think so IMO

Thanks a bunch.
I have a couple questions that I feel like a noob asking:
1. What exactly is ruu? If I restore my stock ROM (I'm on GPE right now) and then s-on and relock my bootloader, is that not enough? I don't have the red text on my stock ROM.
2. Is there any place I can look for the tampered banner? I can't seem to find anything that indicates tampered, unless it's something hidden to us but HTC can see.

Just curious if you guys are using an old phone while you wait for HTC, and if ur getting charged a activation fee for switching phones.

I'm using the $29 option where they overnight a replacement phone to me and then I send mine back with a prepaid label. Gets my screen fixed while also getting a phone without the scratches around the edges.
Regarding the activation fee, I think Verizon only charges that fee for upgrading/adding a line. I don't believe it's charged for changing phones on an existing contract. I'm not sure about other carriers though.

Un-root my Incredible in order to send it back. I recently dropped my phone and the screen craked pretty badly. Everything works its just the screen is craked and the bottom part is starting to break apart. So yeah my question is do i neeed to un root my phone to send it to verizion?
Yes u do they maight see that u been messing whit the phone and may charge u a full restock fee

Are you sending it to verizon or asurion for an insurance replacement? If its for a insurance replacement than no u dont. If your sending it to vzw for somereason than yes or they will void your warrnty.

I would, it is very easy. There is a how to in the forum. It took me about 10 minutes.

Unrooting first is the normal recommendation.
Or if you have the insurance where you can walk in with a baggy of phone parts, they can't void the warranty for rooting/flashing if you can't find the power switch.
hammers are more fun than flashing back to Ruu

Just follow part 2 in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786436&highlight=stock
It will take the phone back to a STOCK 2.2 as it was from Verizon, make sure to flash S-ON if you are S-OFF. After doing all that they will never know the difference.
The thing that cracks me up (see what I did there?) is that people still seem to think they have a warranty if they damage their phone....Warranty by definition covers manufacturer defects in the device, not damage. If you damage your phone you no longer have a warranty. So it doesn't matter if your phone is rooted or not.

My G2 got wet :'( Warrenty/Re-Root question

Sad, Sad day. Fell out of my pocket by my car into a puddle of water, sat for like 10 minutes like that. The worst part is it flipped open so that the keyboard was open which made it thinner so that the entire phone got evenly covered under water.
I have already ripped the battery out and put it in a container with rice to dry out.
What I'm wondering is how good is the warranty protection through tmobile? How does that work with me being rooted? Would I have to get into it long enough to revert to stock, or would that not really even matter? I've got whatever one they offered me when I bought the G2, is this covered or will they see the tripped water mark and want $200 or whatever?
Do replacement G2's have new HBOOT's or whatever so they cannot be rooted? I'm quite scared of that, my G2 was the very first one sold by that location of Tmobile, and I've worried about getting a replacement because I have read that the updated ones don't root easy.

I would have to say your warranty is voided since it got wet. If you send it in to t-mobile you will have to pay a restocking fee once they find out your phone got wet, about 200-300+ bucks. As for the rooting you can still root it since t-mobile hasn't sent any updates on our phone

I've looked into the protection plan I have extra on the phone, it is covered. So a replacement G2 is still rootable?
Come on man...common sense dictates if the phone won't turn on how in the hell will they know its rooted???
If you live in the US and you have the 5.95 insurance plan then you pay 130 for replacement..other countries I don't know.
Of course it's still rootable

If you dont get the phone to boot the support-team wont get it to boot either. I made the experience that the support is not checking too hard if the phone is rooted.
I just got my phone back, which wasnt booting because I bricked it and it is repaired on warranty. It was rooted as well.

didn't bother to unroot, hopefully I'm as lucky as you
If you got the extra coverage you don't even have to send the phone in... It covers loss and theft as well... Just pay the deductible and your good.

Have you ever had a water damaged phone? The last one I had would only goto the bootloader. It turned on, but just to the bootloader.... that screen that says S-OFF Across the top...
I do have that 5.99 plan, I'm workin with them to get the replacement, paying the $130. Tis all taken care of. My concern with the re-root is that I saw that flashing a newer official tmobile file can compromise being able to root, wasn't sure if newer shipped out ones had this or not.
Depends where it comes from and how long it has been sitting there. At this point it would only be a guess what you will get.

Hopefully It's good. If not I'll sell it and get a MT4G or something, I don't want a phone I can't root lol. I will get the replacement on Tuesday

Not sure if I should Unroot my phone...a few other questions too

I'm planning to take my Evo into the Sprint store tomorrow in hopes to get a new/refurbed phone. Right now I am rooted and using CM7 so my main question is should I unroot and flash a stock rom or just flash a stock rom and keep it rooted?
On to my next question. I've never had an issue with my Evo where I had to take it into the Sprint store as of yet. I pay the $7 a month for the TEP so I'm wondering if I go and explain my issue if I'd be covered for a free replacement or not.
Here's what I have going on:
- I've dropped it a few times and it's separating a bit between the screen and the back of the phone. And it's pretty dinged up looking on the sides
- I think because of the separation/dropping my screen doesn't always display after it wakes....If I tap the phone near the power button the screen will come back usually. Otherwise I have to pull the battery and restart it
- The kickstand barely stays down. It's always popping up and is really annoying.
- Just about every call over 30 mins will have at least one dropped call...Very annoying
- Not all of my text messages get sent out....Sometimes people get them days later
Thoughts?
I would just flash a stock ROM.
Actually, everyone should do a nandroid of their phone @ Stock immediately after rooting, just to fall back on. I use mine for Profile updates, etc.
Either way, I doubt they ever check Hboot to see if you're S-On

Thanks for the reply.......what Stock Rom do you suggest? I haven't used a Sense Rom in a long time so what Rom is the closest to Stock as it gets?
There is a PC36IMG you can flash thru hboot that will completely unroot and return to stock, s-on, the whole works and it only takes like 5 min to do just incase they want to give you another phone and keep your broken one.
After that I would invest in an Otterbox lol.

ALWAYS a good idea to unroot and flash a stock rom before taking it to sprint. As we all know, rooting voids your warranty, and if they catch it, they might not fix your phone.
However, since you say you dropped your phone a lot, and the phone has physical damage, that also voids your warranty. There is a slim chance you might get a nice rep that will get you a refurb under warranty. But I can pretty much guarantee you they will say they wont fix a phone that has been dropped so much, in which case you will need to call Asurion and pay the 100 dollar deductible to get a refurb from them.

Unless they really examined my phone they probably wouldn't even know I've dropped it. There are some scratches on the side which could be looked at as normal wear and tear....The separation is visible if you pull on the phone too.
With that said what does the TEP actually cover? I don't want to go into the store and waste my time if they can't do much for me you know? haha

From your first post:
"- I've dropped it a few times and it's separating a bit between the screen and the back of the phone. And it's pretty dinged up looking on the sides"
That sounds pretty damaged to me. And yes, they WILL really examine it, thats the whole point.

Insurance covers everything your warranty doesnt. The warranty covers manufacturer defects for one year. I.e. if your phone has no physical or water damage, it's usually a hardware defect and will be covered under the warranty. Insurance covers everything else, if you drop/break/lose/get stolen/brick by rooting, insurance will cover with the deductible.

[Q] HTC Warranty repairs & htcdev unlock, my experience so far and a question..

OK, So here's my situation with HTC Warranty repairs: (Long explanation of my back-story, scroll down to bold type if you just want to read the question)
My Verizon HTC one, I purchased the first day it was available, and promptly unlocked through htcdev.com. Following that I installed a custom recovery and rooted. I remained on stock ROM, but did get rid of some bloat as well as installed wifi tether.
So, while charging it one day. It got extremely hot and I smelled that "magic smoke" that all electronic devices seem to run on. I quickly unplugged the charger, and saw that the usb plug had started melting slightly, and there were black "charred" marks around the phone's USB port. After this my bottom speaker failed to work, making only a clicking noise anytime audio was played. The top speaker was unaffected. More importantly, the usb port failed to sync properly to my computer. The computer would not recognize my phone. Yikes!
Due to 2 drops of my DNA and cracked screens, I had no insurance on my HTC ONE. Figured I had to contact HTC and see what could be done. They had me do some diagnostics (*#*#3424#*#*), etc... and determined it needed to be sent in for repair. Knowing I had unlocked and tampered flags displayed on my phone, this is where I thought to myself, ugh, I think I may be screwed. Worse yet, when I tried to do a wipe, I must've hit the wrong option, and the phone was soft-bricked. Would not go past the green HTC screen. I could boot into fastboot, and recovery, but could not access fastboot USB mode. Since my phone would not connect to the computer properly, I could not fix it. OK, cross my fingers and sent it in this past Monday 9/30, they received it on Wednesday 10/2.
At this point, I'm thinking I'm certainly going to have to pay for repairs, knowing I made the matters much worse when I did the wipe. But to my surprise, it seems that they have repaired my phone and it's on it's way back to me. So either they did not and will not fix it and sent it back as -is (unlikely) or they fixed it under warranty with no charges.
SO HERE'S MY QUESTION:
Knowing they must have loaded factory fresh software making it locked again, can I use the same unlock code from htcdev? If they had to replace the mainboard, would this mean my unlock code may no longer work? (Does the IMEI change, or anything?)
They shipped it out Friday 10/4 and I will get it back on Wednesday 10/9. I will post updates with what I find, but was just curious. I also wanted to share my experience with HTC Warranty Repair.
Thanks,
Flip
I really have no idea if you can use the same token from htcdev, but I recall that it only cost me a small amount of time (no money) to get a code from htcdev, so why screw around experimenting? Just get a new unlock code.

Oops -- I did forget to note that before htcdev can do anything (old code or new) the phone has to first be in S-OFF mode, which at the moment means availing oneself of Sonic's service.
I am guessing he got htc dev unlock day 1 like me.
but it's a different phone so, ... no.. it wont work..
Based on your description, there's gotta be a 0% chance you're getting the same device back. Shouldn't you be getting a replacement?
If the return report says "repaired" I'm betting that's a communication error from a lazy/sloppy tech.

I'd venture a guess that the aluminum body isn't really something HTC cares about; the innards are the expensive bits. HTC probably just peels back the case, makes sure the components are in working order (and a complete reflash), and then just throw everything in a new outer case. Simple, fast, and doesn't require slow-and-careful disassembly. Again, this is just a complete guess, though it seems logical.

While I agree that the body is probably not that expensive, most of the tear down videos I have seen also destroy the glass and some times the screen. So your general theory does not hold up... the "innards" get broken too. I hope the posts about the "magic" tool to open the back are true, and really, it only makes sense. You have to be able to service and refurbish the phone otherwise the costs would sky rocket.

[Q] Am I screwed with the HTC warranty department?

Last week I was taking some photos with my M8 and noticed that they were just absolutely awful. I know the M8 doesn't have the greatest smartphone camera out there, but these shots looked like they were being taken through a cloud. Naturally I called HTC and explained the problem to them. They told me that I could do an exchange if I paid $19 for the shipping to and from them. I agreed and shipped my phone out a few days ago. Today I received an email telling me that my phone is out of warranty and if I want it fixed I have to pay $290. As soon as I read that I realized that I had forgotten to return my phone from "S-Off" to "S-On" before sending it. After Googling if that was the issue, I read that HTC usually doesn't care if you're S-On or S-Off since they occasionally ship devices out with S-Off on accident (I'm not sure if this is true, though). So I'm not sure what else it could be. I called again, made sure they knew I had the Developer Edition, and the representative told me to call back in a couple days and they'd be able to explain everything to me. Now I'm extremely worried that I'm either going to have to pay $290 or just deal with the issue for the remainder of the time I have with the device.
Does anyone have any experience with the HTC warranty department that can tell me what might be going on and how to deal with them in the event that this doesn't go my way? Thank you!
It is caused by the coating on the camera. There had been a lot of threads about the issue. I have not had that problem yet on my phone but if it does show up, it is good to know there is no need to panic because it is just a simple fix.
Normally, HTC reserves the right to void your warranty if you unlock the bootloader. But seeing as the DE comes with the bootloader unlocked, its never been clear to me how the warranty works in that case, I'd be curious to hear how they respond.
And yes, as the previous response states, the "cloudy" photos is an issue with the camera glass or coating being easily scratched, which is easily fixed by polishing with toothpaste, Turtle Wax, etc.
****. I just sent back my old one and forgot to s-on. I hope it doesn't happen with me. I'll have them send it back before I pay them any more money. I've had problems with both my replacement and original. I'd like to switch to a whole new phone at this point.

Unless its a Dev Edition like the OP, S-on or off doesn't matter if you unlocked the bootloader. They have a record of your IMEI when you unlocked.

Well I contacted HTC and they said warranty is voided when s-off. Trying to see what they can do since I can't afford the full price of this phone. Tbh I would go back to my s4 and send both these phones back. I'll try to keep my progress updated here. The replacement I got is also defective in speakerphone during calls and GPS locking. I pray they allow me to send this replacement back and not have to pay an insane amount for this.
