Not sure if I should Unroot my phone...a few other questions too - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm planning to take my Evo into the Sprint store tomorrow in hopes to get a new/refurbed phone. Right now I am rooted and using CM7 so my main question is should I unroot and flash a stock rom or just flash a stock rom and keep it rooted?
On to my next question. I've never had an issue with my Evo where I had to take it into the Sprint store as of yet. I pay the $7 a month for the TEP so I'm wondering if I go and explain my issue if I'd be covered for a free replacement or not.
Here's what I have going on:
- I've dropped it a few times and it's separating a bit between the screen and the back of the phone. And it's pretty dinged up looking on the sides
- I think because of the separation/dropping my screen doesn't always display after it wakes....If I tap the phone near the power button the screen will come back usually. Otherwise I have to pull the battery and restart it
- The kickstand barely stays down. It's always popping up and is really annoying.
- Just about every call over 30 mins will have at least one dropped call...Very annoying
- Not all of my text messages get sent out....Sometimes people get them days later
Thoughts?

I would just flash a stock ROM.
Actually, everyone should do a nandroid of their phone @ Stock immediately after rooting, just to fall back on. I use mine for Profile updates, etc.
Either way, I doubt they ever check Hboot to see if you're S-On

Thanks for the reply.......what Stock Rom do you suggest? I haven't used a Sense Rom in a long time so what Rom is the closest to Stock as it gets?

There is a PC36IMG you can flash thru hboot that will completely unroot and return to stock, s-on, the whole works and it only takes like 5 min to do just incase they want to give you another phone and keep your broken one.
After that I would invest in an Otterbox lol.

ALWAYS a good idea to unroot and flash a stock rom before taking it to sprint. As we all know, rooting voids your warranty, and if they catch it, they might not fix your phone.
However, since you say you dropped your phone a lot, and the phone has physical damage, that also voids your warranty. There is a slim chance you might get a nice rep that will get you a refurb under warranty. But I can pretty much guarantee you they will say they wont fix a phone that has been dropped so much, in which case you will need to call Asurion and pay the 100 dollar deductible to get a refurb from them.

Unless they really examined my phone they probably wouldn't even know I've dropped it. There are some scratches on the side which could be looked at as normal wear and tear....The separation is visible if you pull on the phone too.
With that said what does the TEP actually cover? I don't want to go into the store and waste my time if they can't do much for me you know? haha

That sounds pretty damaged to me. And yes, they WILL really examine it, thats the whole point.

Insurance covers everything your warranty doesnt. The warranty covers manufacturer defects for one year. I.e. if your phone has no physical or water damage, it's usually a hardware defect and will be covered under the warranty. Insurance covers everything else, if you drop/break/lose/get stolen/brick by rooting, insurance will cover with the deductible.

[Q] sprint store with a rooted evo

so I have the screen separation appearing on the bottom right corner of my screen. I am rooted with CM6 and wanted to know should I unroot and go back to stock before taking my phone to Sprint Service center? If so, where can I found the stock latest 2.2 to flash my phone back to stock?

I got the screen replaced on my Evo last week due to dust under the upper left corner. I took it in just like I use it...running Fresh Rom and the Riptide theme. They won't say anything about being rooted unless you are bringing the phone in for a problem that may be related to rooting. Screen seperation isn't that type of problem. They didn't even mention it.

I said in my post "I got the screen replaced on my Evo last week". They removed the screen (outer glass, bezel, digitizer and LCD are all one assembly) and put a new one on. Took about an hour.

Did they charge you?
If there is no physical damage (scratches, dents, water damage) it should be replaced for free.
While that guy was lucky, I would DEFINITELY unroot before taking it in. Rooting voids your entire warranty, and if they see it, even if your problem is hardware related and not software related, they can void the warranty and you will never get it fixed. Better safe than sorry.

you need to unroot, not just flash a stock ROM... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=800582 but first check if your s-on/off (read the link to find out more)
Forgot I had a nandroid backup saved on my computer of my phone while it still had HTC rom.
Turned out my glass on the front panel was version 1 which means my complete phone has to be replaced.
So now I will have Android 2.2 with HTC rom and will have to learn to root that. It was so easy to root when I had 2.1 but I'm sure I will be able to handle it.
New Evo on Thursday!

I called my local Sprint repair center and asked what their policy was on rooted phones. Like the OP said they didn't care as long as you aren't having software issues. If you are thinking about taking your phone in call the store and ask it won't hurt a bit. Now if you think they are going to replace your device save your self a trip and unroot first because the phone will need to be returned to stock before they will exchange it. The employees were actually impressed with what had been done with the phone and were very cool about it. Think about it they work on phones hopefully they like what they do, they think its cool too.

I rooted a new one yesterday and used unrevoked without issue. It has actually gotten easier then when i had to use adb push and all that.

So, since I am getting a new phone out of this and my phone is still rooted, should I go back to completely stock?
All I did was flash back to my very first back up with HTC stock rom.
Will just having my Evo flashed to that first backup be enough when they ship off my phone after they hand me over my new one or should I fully restock my phone?

fully unroot and return the phone to stock it is easy to do its like 2 steps and takes only a few minutes.
people act like it is an hour long in depth process to root and unroot your phones its 5-10 minutes to do it and better not to take chances. All it takes is for one guy having a bad day to be a **** and make a note voiding warranty etc. Also in your case now is it really worth risking having to go home and unroot it then run back out to do the swap if they need you?

I went in today to get my button crack fixed, made an appointment, took some time off work, and the second I got in there the guy berated me for having a non-official extended battery and said they wouldn't do any work on it because its rooted - even though my problem had NOTHING to do with software.
unrooting right now and then going to a manager. generally sweet customer service... not today.

Ouch hope they didn't flag your account...if so your SOL unless you know someone or find a hella cool manager.
Always unroot it only takes a matter of minutes (or should) and can save you a lot of hassle.

I've given back a few rooted phones for non-root related issues (speaker bad, kickstand won't stay in, LEDs don't work - 5 evos total so far) with no issues. Did the same with a lot of flashed TP's (12) and TP2's (2).
They can void your warranty for rooting it, sure, but they can't over the battery. Just tell him you don't know anything about it and you bought it that way on craigslist. That doesn't protect your warranty, but unless the guy has just decided to be a total d-bag they'll probably replace it anyway.
Also, the employees behind the counter are just people too. Being nice and not acting like you have a sense of self-entitlement to anything you want goes a long way. Believe me, I know first-hand. Customers' attitude factors in fairly heavily in how they get charged at the computer shop I work at because the techs set the prices on jobs.
Just be nice, don't be an a-hole yourself. If they say they won't fix it - fine. Say thanks anyway, be polite, and leave with it. Go home, unroot it, pick a different sprint store, and go complain about your original problem again. Five bucks says they'll fix it no questions asked.
It sounds like some of you need to read the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. The very notion of "my entire warranty is voided because I'm rooted" is completely illegal and anyone that tries to tell you otherwise could find themselves in some legal hot water.

Not true, if you modify or alter a consumer product to a point that it performs significantly different than the manufacturer intended, the manufacturer is under no obligation to warranty it any longer.
I'm pretty sure this topic has been addressed many times and there is no set answer? I vaguely remember reading a legal article on it as well. It would be nice if there was an official statement made by both carriers and phone manufactures.

That is not entirely true. They can not void your warrenty for issues unrelated to rooting. If you brick your rom, sure that is legit for them to do that...but if my LCD fails, and is unrelated to the rooting, then no they can not. If they try to do that, you make sure you fight it.
I had a repair center in my town refuse to fix my speaker on my mogul with low volume problem, because I had a scratch on my battery door cover. He said my warrenty was void to to "Physical damage."
After a phone call to Sprint, and apparently other complaints that service center lost thier contract with Sprint. I ended up with a touch pro 2.... (Although I just wanted my mogul fixed , I was never happy with the TP2, and bought an EVO )

[Q] Rooted S-OFF warranty phone with broken sceen

I have a rooted S-OFF droid incredible with a custom ROM. It also has a completely broken screen. The verizon salesman has told me I can get it covered under warranty and it needs to be sent in. My worry is the S-OFF is going to void this warranty offer when I send it in. Anything to be worried about you think? If there is any doubt, I'd like to turn S-ON, reload stock, and do a factory reset. Anyone able to write up a guide on how to do this pretending I was blind (press down 5 times, wait 5 seconds, etc.)? I did find this guide that gets me part of the way there, but I can't see what I'm doing.

If the screen is busted, they won't be able to see what you ahve done. Also, it is not like you fried the phone due to something you flashed. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
I've sent 3 rooted Droids back to Verizon before I switched to the Incredible, you should have nothing to worry about
I wouldn't worry half as much. The only thing I would worry about is the fact that your gonna send it in and can't do anything to change s-off.. What if they change the screen thinking they can just perform a factory data reset and BAM! they are presented with some custom rom with superuser capability.. And then your account get's hit up with full retail ($529.99US). For some people that can be a large sum of money.
I'll pray with you that is not the case.. I hope you simply receive your replacement phone problem free. I know what it's like to have a cracked screen luckily for me it happened before I jumped the fence into the world of unrevoked forever..

No. What's likely happening is that the VZW rep is referring to an Asurion claim as a warranty even though it's insurance. Warranty only covers manufacturer defects, and does not include cosmetic damage that we inflict ourselves.

if it's the insurance, does it even matter if it's rooted or not? can't you just pay the deductible and get the new phone. I know they told me i can run mine over with a car and essentially throw it in the river and for $90 i get a new one.

So, I'm going go to Sprint to pay the 35 dollars to get my screen fixed. Would it be a big deal if they see that the phone has Cyanogen on it? Bought the phone from Radio Shack so it's not like they would tell them about it. xP
It probably depends on the store, but I took mine in the other day for a screwed up screen, and they fixed it. I know they rebooted it, because it was off when I gave it to them and on when I picked it up. So I know they saw the CyanogenMod boot screen. I'm sure other things may have tipped them off, too, but they didn't give me any trouble about it and let me sign up for their protection plan anyway.
Give it a shot. It's not like they're going to hold your phone ransom.
P.S. I did take my SD card out before I gave it to them.
As always, I recommend you unroot. We all know that rooting doesnt cause hardware malfunctions, or has nothing to do with your scratched screen. But it does void the warranty, and there is always the possibility they will catch it. I wouldnt take the chance.

Well if they do care, and they do catch it, they will permanently void your warranty, so every sprint store will see it and you will never get your phone fixed.
Maybe hold on to your battery while they fix it?
Or just take the steps to do a nandroid backup, then unroot it.
I never bother unrooting before having my phone serviced, I just do a nandroid backup and then install the RUU ROM version. Unless they boot into recovery, they can't tell and it's so much easier to restore when I get it back.
The guys at my sprint store are always fascinated with my phones when I bring them in. I had my Evo rooted before I even activated it, put CM 6.1 on it, tried to activate it but it wouldn't so I took it to the sprint store and they couldent figure it out. Brought it back home, flashed stock RUU and activated just fine, took it back and let the guys play around with CM 6.1 and they were asking how to root theirs.
I guess it just depends on the store

Don't worry, you're rooted EVO will be just fine.. Now, if it were an iPhone and you were going to the * I have Mr job's hot dog up my azz* 'Genius Bar' .. that'd be a different story..
I Called and asked if they cared that my phone was rooted and they didn't. Doesn't sound like your going in under a warranty item your paying them to fix it. They generally only care about rooted if your having software issues. Like I said call the store DON'T give them your name talk to the tech and ask him what their policy is on rooted phones. it would seem to me your paying them to fix the screen it shouldn't matter if its rooted or not. Call them and ask it wont hurt.
If you have TEP on your phone does it still cost $35 to have your screen replaced. I have a tiny scratch on mine and I'm not sure it's worth $35 but if its free I might do it.

Nope with TEP it is free. Had my cracked camera lens fixed yesterday and they new it was rooted. Free with TEP. To be totally safe just nandroid and unroot.

If you are going in for a scratched screen, I doubt they would care. Just nandroid backup and flash the stock RUU. However, for software issues, the stores and refurb people are soon to be asked to check in recovery for S-OFF and void your warranty.
Half those guys in the store probably have a rooted phone themselves.
The Sprint store I go to, 2 of the guys have rooted evos and another has a rooted samsung galaxy s. Maybe go in there beforehand and talk to some of them. They dont even care about rooting necessarily; its not like it screws the sales guys or anything.

No, I'm told that if the screen isn't broken, they won't fix the screen for just scratches.

My store, one rooted Evo, and one rooted Intercept. Here we don't care about it too much.... unless the customer is a straight up ass.
Store I use to work at, rooted Evo, rooted Epic, rooted Hero, but they don't do S&R there.

Un-root my Incredible in order to send it back. I recently dropped my phone and the screen craked pretty badly. Everything works its just the screen is craked and the bottom part is starting to break apart. So yeah my question is do i neeed to un root my phone to send it to verizion?

Are you sending it to verizon or asurion for an insurance replacement? If its for a insurance replacement than no u dont. If your sending it to vzw for somereason than yes or they will void your warrnty.

Unrooting first is the normal recommendation.
Or if you have the insurance where you can walk in with a baggy of phone parts, they can't void the warranty for rooting/flashing if you can't find the power switch.

It will take the phone back to a STOCK 2.2 as it was from Verizon, make sure to flash S-ON if you are S-OFF. After doing all that they will never know the difference.
The thing that cracks me up (see what I did there?) is that people still seem to think they have a warranty if they damage their phone....Warranty by definition covers manufacturer defects in the device, not damage. If you damage your phone you no longer have a warranty. So it doesn't matter if your phone is rooted or not.

Over the last few days I had my phone plugged into the factory charger and it over heated.
The batter actually swelled up so fat that it pushed the cover off the back. It left green splotches the size of quarters on my screen that have gotten smaller over the last few days. The phone is still acting a little crazy, but it is useable now that I have my spare battery in it.
My phone is rooted.
My question is:
How is the best way to approach sprint regarding replacement of this phone. Since it didn't get wet, and didn't get dropped I don't think it should be an insurance replacement.
If I have to take the phone to a sprint store, is there a way I can brick this phone so they can't tell it was rooted?

If it was me, I would go completely back to stock and take it in.
Were you running a SBC kernal that does that trickle charge thing? Might have overcharged the battery.
No need to brick the phone. Just unroot, return to stock rom, and take it in. You are still under warranty. They will likely give you a new phone and battery and charger. If they try to tell you otherwise, talk to a manager. Don't take their crap about making you pay 100 bucks for the insurance deductable, this isnt an insurance issue, its a warranty issue.

SBC K-e-r-n-e-l-s have been around for months and there has been 1-2 users with wild accusations about batteries blowing up with really nothing to back them up.
I am running a Fresh rom, I was also using the wireless tether for about 5 hours straight, I believe that probably had something to do with it.
I was camping and needed to get online for work, I don't usually use the tether that much..

I am almost certain sprint insurence covers water damage. please verify before taking my suggestion. If it does just give your evo a bath and fry it ith water damage! software tampering will be impossible to detect and if it is possible, highly unlikely.
If your going the insurance route, just report it stolen

Thank you for pointing out my mistake. I appreciate you taking the time to correct me.
Water damge and lost or stolen u HAVE to pay the 100$ deductible. Return it to stock and u should get a free replacement or repair.

It isn't a launch day EVO is it?? Because if I'm not mistaken its a one year warranty that is now up if so....

Warranty has nothing to do with in-store stuff, only pertains to batteries.
Your problem could have been caused by an SBC kernel. As a knowledgeable tech and fellow tinkerer, I'd turn you away if I caught wind of any rooting or flashing.
That being said, if you flash back to stock and unroot, your problem is covered under the ESRP portion of TEP, if you have it.

Excuse my ignorance, I used the youtube video to root my phone, I'm no expert by any means, what is an SBC kernel?

No, that's insurance fraud, and is illegal.
Exactly. Asurion will cover "any" physical damage, ie rooting phone flashing SBC kernel and the battery exploding. Go to store if they deny ESRP claim you can file ERP claim.

Update:
sorry for the delayed response, I don't seem to get notifications to this thread even though I'm subscribed..
My work hasn't given me the time allowed to unroot my phone and **** with sprint over warranty, I'm just going to file a claim. my last one was July 8th, so this will be my 2nd in a 12 month period and puts me in good shape for further claims if necessary.
Are yall positive I don't need to brick the phone before sending it back to assurion?
They won't care that it has been rooted?
Thanks for all the info, I'll be sure to keep this thread bookmarked, because I'm sure with my luck with phones I may need to follow the un-rooting process in the future..
Also:
They went back and forth about not being able to send me a new battery (which is what damaged the phone in the first place, likely because of the extended wifi tether in a 100+ degree truck), but, alas, the last person to 'process' my claim said they were throwing in a new charger and battery too..

Again, NO. That's insurance fraud, and it's illegal. Your phone is out of warranty, and it's broke. That's exactly what insurance is for. Just call them, tell them your phone is broke, and pay your deductible. You do not need to brick your phone, they don't care what the problem is. As long as you have a problem, and you pay the deductible, that's all they care. Intentionally bricking your phone to make a claim is illegal.

No, Asurion doesn't care. Sprint DOES care, because rooting voids your warranty. But Ausurion isn't sprint, and they dont care.

Umm no. If you left the phone on wifi tether in a hot car in summer for over an hour, then it's YOUR fault it overheated, NOT the battery's fault.

Another "option"
I would reset my Droid...remove the M-SD card and eat (pay) the deductible... I know it is a warranty issue...but sometimes the lost phone scenario is the best way to get around them (Sprint) from asking too many questions about WTF happened to this phone. In whereas lies answers that will not abode well to them on you having the desired outcome; which is a new (refurbished) phone for you.
