So I got a friend that just bought a brand new HTC One M8 about 2 weeks ago and his dumb*ss accidentally left the phone outside while it was pouring rain. Here's over here tripping out cause he already put the phone in a bag of rice and left it there for a day and the phone still won't power on. He says when he plugs the phone in, a red light blinks and the battery icon stays on. Is there any way it can be fixed or if HTC can replace/repair the phone?
Water damage is water damage. Something is almost always broke from water. If it won't turn on, his is obviously toast.
As far as warranty, usually only insurance or extra coverage of some sort will cover water. Not usually the basic barebones coverage. He may be out of luck.
I know, crappy . But water is merciless.

Only had my desire a few weeks, and yesterday I did the stupidest thing I could. I dropped it in a cup of tea.
It wasn't fully submerged and only the bottom quarter of the phone was affected.
The water indicator sticker on both the battery and the phone are still white, unless there are any more stickers located inside the phone which I don't know about.
I attempted to try it with a hair dryer and lightly shook out most of the tea. I left it to try for as long as I could and removed the battery and sim card, but foolisly I did attempt to turn it on afterwards, as I needed to use the phone. (Which I've now read I shouldn't have done).
Most of the tea went under the area which you can only get to if you unscrew the phone, which if I unscrew will void the warranty completely, so I have left it on for now.
The power button on the phone no longer works, and the phone boots up straight away when the battery is placed in it. The phones main features work, but if I don't constantly use the phone and the screen switches off, it completely shuts the phone down.
As the indicators are still white, do you reckon there is any chance I could get it repaired under the HTC warranty?
Sorry for the long rambling explanation, and advice would be greatly appreciated.
how long ago did it happen? cover it in rice and chuck it in your hot water cupboard for a few days. that usually gets rid of all water inside water damaged phones (of course all bets are off now that you have tried turning it on).

any chance of warranty repair - sorry to say, but probably not.
the tea will most likely have caused some staining internally, so it's gunna be pretty obvious it's got wet.
try the rice thing mentioned by nzdcoy, but I don't fancy your chances.
i am sorry to say but any kind of warranty is lost. the only way for you to manage to get your phone fixed is to be disassembled. take a look here

and here

this are disassemble and assembly videos.
forgot to mention, for cleaning it use isopropilic alcohol. you can find it in any phormacy.
if you can't find it use pure 95% white alcohol.

I might have the first defy dead from water damage from what I can find. My defy recently underwent repair for an earpiece problem, where they replaced the entire motherboard, but not the front panel, which was what they did the first time. my defy took a light, probably 10 second dip into a pool, but it ended up taking in alot of moisture from what I can tell.
I removed the battery. I tried shaking out as much water as I could, with a sort of rapid pendulum motion. The water marker on the back of the phone was and still is white. when attempting to boot the phone up (I know, my mistake), I could see water/moisture behind the glass. I removed the battery again and let it sit in some rice in a sealed ziplock bag. Moisture looked gone. The phone just booted to the M logo, and the indicator leds turned on. After a while the screen went black and I think it displayed a red led. I tried lightly blow drying it on low heat to maybe try get more moisture out and then put it back in the bag.
Now, im wondering if my defy is dead. After the quick dip in the pool, the phone still worked and showed no signs of water damage. just dried it off, and stuck it down on a table. When I came back, the phone was off. I thought nothing much of it, and tried rebooting it. this was the first time I saw the phone display the motorola as well as a bunch of leds. After my first drying attempt, it booted back up normal and the phone was functioning 100%, but i still saw moisture behind the screen, so i took the battery out.
Im not sure if my defy is salvageable. the moisture indicator is still white, but im sure there are other signs of moisture inside the phone if I tried sending it off for repair. Im going to try leave it in rice for another day or two, try to get it booted then. If not, I might have the first water damaged defy
Wait for some days or else open up the screws if you are confident with it and dont damage anything just explore something and u will find it out...........BE CONFIDENT
Check whether it boots into recovery
Wont opening the screws void the warranty? I mean, the moisture indicator is still white. I still have the send it in to motorola option.
If your warranty is ok.then go to moto service center or wait for some days till it gets dried...........Water in your screen wont dry up until u clean
If it is still operable, then its ok. Try silica gel instead of rice. Leave it room temp

Boot IC broken because of water damage!!!!....I lost my defy!!...Its seems it l cost around 3500rs for it to fix that!!
Hi all,
My LTE galaxy nexus phone had a bottle of water spill next to it; it then sat in the puddle for several hours overnight (god damn cat...). The next morning I was a bit confused as to why it wouldn't turn on/charge so I removed the battery cover to reveal wet internals. Taking the battery in/out causes the camera flash to turn on but nothing else.
I put it in white rice for the next two days but when I put the battery in, the flash came on again.
Is it safe to say this phone is doomed and I need to hit up my insurance?
Thanks ahead of time for the advice.
Assuming the phone is completely dry (inside and out) then you're probably best off making an insurance claim. Though it may be possible to repair the device if it is something simple (i.e. 'gunk' causing a non-volatile short) doing so may void your insurance and probably isn't worth your time since you have insurance...
You can proceed with the insurance claim, but if it is not totally busted, I'd use a hairdryer or something to drive warm air at it keeping it warm for some time. It was only last week that the Mrs' HTC Sensation got soaking wet as the phone was in the purse with a water bottle... all the water damage stickers are red now and the phone was soaking wet...On top of that the Mrs actually connected the phone to the charger in that condition to check if it was charging....duh... It flashed funny as if it was about to die...
Anyways, I took the battery out and blasted hot air for at least 30 mins through all crevices on the phone, then kept it for a few hours on the radiator and finally in with rice on the radiator for two days...After all that effort, the phone now works as good as it did before....Just stating that it might still be worth trying to fix it yourself in the interim...
Hi,
I know there is a lot of information on the Internet about Water Damage, but i can't seem to find out what's going with my device.
Here's what happened: i went for a run with my phone stuck to my arm by a rubber band. When i got home i found that the sweat of my arm had damaged the phone: it didn't want to turn on and the water damage stickers are red. I dried the sweat of the back of the phone with a towel (it wasn't much) and i was able to turn it up for an hour or two and it seemed fined, only the battery indicator was crazy (exclamation mark). I wasn't able to charge my battery as well. The indicator led is crazy as well (when i try to charge my battery it blinks orange, green and so on).
The phone itself seems fine is the battery that cannot charge and seems damaged causing the phone to turn off frequently. What do you think? Should a buy a new battery or a new phone?
(sorry for my bad english)
1: don't run with the phone. Two: try with another battery, the battery seems broken.

If phone is still damp put it in a bowl of dry rice, it will remove any excess moisture.

That phone is not designed to be used that way, you should use an external casing that's not connected to your skin and as such less likely to be sweat damaged. (i.e.: belt clip of sort).
The suggestion to place into a jar of rice for a day or two is typically a good way to draw out any moisture, the main thing you DO NOT want to do is attempt to power it on or charge while humidity still exists inside the device.
I bought a new battery and the phone works just fine, only the old battery was damaged. Thanks for the help.
This is more of a question about sweat
I didn't want to make another thread about sweat damage, so i figured I might as well ask here. I have a problem where it seem that my touch screen collects moisture inside my pants pocket. One time at the mall i stood watching a football game for like an hour, when i took out my phone the screen was completely soaked like i gave it a good spray with a spray bottle. I think the problem is that the phone is warm so it causes me to sweat more? Funny thing is I feel warm but it doesn't seem like i was sweating, yet screen still collect alot of moisture.
The phone is working fine, no sign of any water related damage and that incident been about 2 weeks ago. My real question is, anyone got any recommendation as to how to carry my phone to prevent any further water exposure?
So recently had a massive storm and my phone got a little bit of water int it ...it was in my back pocket and i was getting the kids out of the car it was enough to make the lock button go haywire and apon turning it off it would no longer turn back on(The touch buttons continuesly turned on and off all night before i could take it to the store). Optus HAS to send it away to HTC for "Repairs" for it being in warranty*cough* what do you think my chances are of HTC actually repairing it.
the second i turned it off i took the sim card out and got the hair dryer to blow down to sorta get rid of the moisture and the lens only fogged for about a min or two
any one else had any experiences with HTC and water damaged devices. or is optus being a pain in the but and just dont want to really let me use my insurance right away?

they will see that water damaged it, there are 2 options
1-they won't repair it
2-they will repair it but you'll have to pay for it
Put it in a sack of rice for a few days it helps to dry it out.
