I might have the first defy dead from water damage from what I can find. My defy recently underwent repair for an earpiece problem, where they replaced the entire motherboard, but not the front panel, which was what they did the first time. my defy took a light, probably 10 second dip into a pool, but it ended up taking in alot of moisture from what I can tell.
I removed the battery. I tried shaking out as much water as I could, with a sort of rapid pendulum motion. The water marker on the back of the phone was and still is white. when attempting to boot the phone up (I know, my mistake), I could see water/moisture behind the glass. I removed the battery again and let it sit in some rice in a sealed ziplock bag. Moisture looked gone. The phone just booted to the M logo, and the indicator leds turned on. After a while the screen went black and I think it displayed a red led. I tried lightly blow drying it on low heat to maybe try get more moisture out and then put it back in the bag.
Now, im wondering if my defy is dead. After the quick dip in the pool, the phone still worked and showed no signs of water damage. just dried it off, and stuck it down on a table. When I came back, the phone was off. I thought nothing much of it, and tried rebooting it. this was the first time I saw the phone display the motorola as well as a bunch of leds. After my first drying attempt, it booted back up normal and the phone was functioning 100%, but i still saw moisture behind the screen, so i took the battery out.
Im not sure if my defy is salvageable. the moisture indicator is still white, but im sure there are other signs of moisture inside the phone if I tried sending it off for repair. Im going to try leave it in rice for another day or two, try to get it booted then. If not, I might have the first water damaged defy
Wait for some days or else open up the screws if you are confident with it and dont damage anything just explore something and u will find it out...........BE CONFIDENT

Wont opening the screws void the warranty? I mean, the moisture indicator is still white. I still have the send it in to motorola option.
If your warranty is ok.then go to moto service center or wait for some days till it gets dried...........Water in your screen wont dry up until u clean
If it is still operable, then its ok. Try silica gel instead of rice. Leave it room temp

The water indicator sticker on both the battery and the phone are still white, unless there are any more stickers located inside the phone which I don't know about.
I attempted to try it with a hair dryer and lightly shook out most of the tea. I left it to try for as long as I could and removed the battery and sim card, but foolisly I did attempt to turn it on afterwards, as I needed to use the phone. (Which I've now read I shouldn't have done).
Most of the tea went under the area which you can only get to if you unscrew the phone, which if I unscrew will void the warranty completely, so I have left it on for now.
The power button on the phone no longer works, and the phone boots up straight away when the battery is placed in it. The phones main features work, but if I don't constantly use the phone and the screen switches off, it completely shuts the phone down.
As the indicators are still white, do you reckon there is any chance I could get it repaired under the HTC warranty?

how long ago did it happen? cover it in rice and chuck it in your hot water cupboard for a few days. that usually gets rid of all water inside water damaged phones (of course all bets are off now that you have tried turning it on).

any chance of warranty repair - sorry to say, but probably not.
the tea will most likely have caused some staining internally, so it's gunna be pretty obvious it's got wet.
try the rice thing mentioned by nzdcoy, but I don't fancy your chances.
i am sorry to say but any kind of warranty is lost. the only way for you to manage to get your phone fixed is to be disassembled. take a look here

forgot to mention, for cleaning it use isopropilic alcohol. you can find it in any phormacy.
if you can't find it use pure 95% white alcohol.

Hi all,
My GF has a G2. A few days ago she put it in her cup holder in her car. There was a few mm of water from a degraded fast food cup in the cup holder. She told me that the water might have reached the earphone.
We let the phone dry out for 48hrs and put the battery back in. Initially it worked for about 6hrs with no problems but when she came home from work the phone would only boot into the bootloader. Once in the bootloader I can not select any options nor turn the phone off. Taking the battery out is the only option, but when it's put back in we go back to the bootloader.
I have attached a picture of the bootloader screen. You can see there is some striation on the bottom of the screen. This striation is at the opposite end from where the phone touched the water.
1. is the striation normal? (think I know the ans to that one but...)
2. Can I try anything to get the phone up and running?
3. Would it be worth a warranty replacement call? The White dot behind the battery is still white, but I think the screen could be a give away to water damage.
Looks like water trapped under the screen. Water could have run from one end of the phone to the other, especially if you held it back upright while water was still inside. Or it could have re-condensed in a different spot from where it was submerged.
If water is still trapped under the screen, its obviously not completely dry. I would try to dry it more, you can try the trick of placing the phone in a bag of uncooked rice, or chemical dessicant packs (like the kind some items come packed with that say "do not eat") to help pull the water out of the phone. 2 days does not seems like enough time, if you just tried just air drying it without one of these tricks. Power off until you are more sure the phone is dry, or you are just doing more damage.
Rice is your best bet right now. It can work wonders.

Rice trick is your best bet. Might be too late now. Should have never turned it back on, and if it was on at the time, should have shut it off immediately till you consulted xda. At least you will know for next time! Good luck! Fyi you didn't need to blur that stuff out.

I just was on vacation and my defy fell in the swimming pool.
So i got it out and it still worked only a red led appeared. After 10 minutes the screen turned off. So i put my defy in rise but it isn't working. Now when I am back I opened my defy and put it in a dry place but when I put the battery back the screen wont start up and I am getting a red light. Still I am 100% sure the motherboard works fine because it starts up and I see the 2nd init bootloader led flashing from blue to green. So does anybody know what I should clean or look at. Otherwise i will flash a stock froyo rom and do a cash wipe/factory reset and sent it to Motorola.

There is no water left so no shortcuts.
The screen is working!! but the back-light isn't so i cant see **** but its boots up and if i look closely MIUI started up fine. So i guess i should buy a new screen or fix it somehow. I looked a lot on the Internet for the red light and found that a lot of phones show a red led when the battery is broken or something so I will test it at a shop. I guess i cant use my warranty because my case looks awful so i will fix it my self.

maybe check if your battery is not completely discharged accidentaly.
I have also heard that the drying process should last a day or more.

Yea I know but I will wait an other day. Maybe there are just some shortcuts why the screen isn't starting up because it doesn't look damaged at all.
It look like the device is partially damaged when it decided to jump into the pool..
You should had immediately pull out the battery and check throughout of water getting in the device, and let it dry first before your attempting to reboot it.

Funny thing is I did. It was dry but after some minutes vapor appeared between the screen and the screen case. then the same vapor appeared by the camera and ... screen turns off.

Officially (according to IP67) the defy is water resistant up to 1 meteres do not know how deep the pool was? If you do not have warranty anymore you could open it up and let it dry in seperate parts. But if there is vapour under the screen and camera lens i'm affraid more damage is done....

I did it...
Today i took my defy for a little swim, took it under no more than 10 inches of water, pool, while recording a video to see how it goes, when i got it out after 40 secs, the pone kept recording but when i touch to stop recording the phone started vibrating like if i was pressing any of buttons (home, menu, back and search) and then froze i got scared so i pulled the battery and check for water, but i saw that the lens got moisture so i quickly took it to a bowl with uncook rice and left it there for 3 hours. i then checked it and all the moisture was gone.
When i turned it on it booted like if it didn't had any OS so i left it alone and a while later it loaded fine, but then i noticed the moisture was back on the lens cover, took it back to a new bowl with rice, and it has been there for another 3 hours now but the moisture is showing in te screen also.
What do you guys recomend me to do?
Does the waranty should cover any damage?
P.S: sorry for such a long "Answer" to the thread, but i'm worried and didn't want to spam by opening a new one.

mine allso got wet, and seems that now work's fine but it has no backlight to the lcd and to the soft keys. anybody solved this problem? thx!

Don't thing Rice is going to do more then a paper towel... It doesn't suck any liquid out of gaps or anything. You can try the little ball's that come with clothing. They suck the water out the air so that the water in the phone can vaporize in the air.
But the one's that come with the things you buy will most likely already be saturated.
The best way is to use rubbing alcohol (as high percentage as possible). The alcohol displaces the water but does vaporizes is normal conditions. So you can just submerge your phone in alcohol (with no battery, sim and sd-card ofc. and best only the logic board) and let it dry for some time. This before you try to put it on. This also cleans out most of the salt and sand as this damages you board over time.
So it started raining cats and dogs while I went for a hike today, almost like a flash flood. I had kept my phone in a plastic bag however the worst thing happened, somehow the water got in the bag and my phone was lying in the bag for a few hours before I realized. I started to turn on my phone exactly twice, did not work, I realized what happened and immediately took out the battery. Once I reached home a few hours later I put the battery and the phone in rice. I am keeping my fingers crossed, can anyone of you give me some more helpful tips??
Additionally, Can you tell me if how can I detect if the water detectors have turned on?? where are they?? also should I use the hair dryer on the phone?? and most importantly how much time should I wait before I try to turn it on again???
Also, I just noticed on the battery, both the negative terminals have some little black stuff on them, does it mean anything??
The indicators are inside the phone. You have to take the back off to see them. Keep it in rice for 4 days at least. It would also help if you remove the back while drying it out. Try a different battery too as sometimes it's only the battery that's damaged. Whatever you do, DON'T ATTEMPT TO POWER IT ON, this is what shorts out the motherboard and bricks it.

Take out the battery and locate the white stripe (usually next to the connectors). If it's red, your warranty is voided.
The water damage indicators are still intact and white.
I had it confirmed from the service centre however they insist that they can see the water damage clearly and so the repair would have to be bared by me.
Do I have any options here, the repaire cost is quite a lot as they said they would have to replace the motherboard and LCD!!
Also If I do get it repaired then would it work properly?? should I go for the repair, the cost is almost 50% of the phone price.
I'd swerve it if I were you and look on ebay for a second hand one.

If you've got any, silica gel works much better than rice at absorbing moisture. Avoid the hairdryer method - if you aren't careful it gets too hot and may damage some of the more sensitive components on the board.
You can also take a multitester to your battery and see if it still provides the correct voltage (it'll be written on the battery)

I know there is a lot of information on the Internet about Water Damage, but i can't seem to find out what's going with my device.
Here's what happened: i went for a run with my phone stuck to my arm by a rubber band. When i got home i found that the sweat of my arm had damaged the phone: it didn't want to turn on and the water damage stickers are red. I dried the sweat of the back of the phone with a towel (it wasn't much) and i was able to turn it up for an hour or two and it seemed fined, only the battery indicator was crazy (exclamation mark). I wasn't able to charge my battery as well. The indicator led is crazy as well (when i try to charge my battery it blinks orange, green and so on).
The phone itself seems fine is the battery that cannot charge and seems damaged causing the phone to turn off frequently. What do you think? Should a buy a new battery or a new phone?

That phone is not designed to be used that way, you should use an external casing that's not connected to your skin and as such less likely to be sweat damaged. (i.e.: belt clip of sort).
The suggestion to place into a jar of rice for a day or two is typically a good way to draw out any moisture, the main thing you DO NOT want to do is attempt to power it on or charge while humidity still exists inside the device.
I bought a new battery and the phone works just fine, only the old battery was damaged. Thanks for the help.
This is more of a question about sweat
I didn't want to make another thread about sweat damage, so i figured I might as well ask here. I have a problem where it seem that my touch screen collects moisture inside my pants pocket. One time at the mall i stood watching a football game for like an hour, when i took out my phone the screen was completely soaked like i gave it a good spray with a spray bottle. I think the problem is that the phone is warm so it causes me to sweat more? Funny thing is I feel warm but it doesn't seem like i was sweating, yet screen still collect alot of moisture.
The phone is working fine, no sign of any water related damage and that incident been about 2 weeks ago. My real question is, anyone got any recommendation as to how to carry my phone to prevent any further water exposure?
