Hello,
In October I purchased my first true smartphone, the Galaxy S3 i747.
Since then I have rooted and just have a few simple questions.
I haven't installed a custom ROM, and I really don't know much about them other than that they are an alternative to the stock android os (4.1, 4.0, etc.) that comes with your phone. I have a few questions about ROMs.
I have heard good things about cleanROM, and I want to download it to my phone, but I can't seem to find my phone's version of it. Does it even exist for my version? If not, what are some excellent alternatives? (Must be able to change status bar, I hate the grey one in 4.1.1, just updated tonight) Finally, with a custom ROM, will I ever have to do anything with the stock OS again? Because I get this error message now after i have upgraded to 4.1.1, that doesnt let me check for updates as I have rooted my phone.
Thanks a ton for your help guys, and sorry for the noobish questions!

I may be wrong but it looks like cleanROM is for only Verizon. I dont think Scott has an AT&T version because he does not have our phone.

I had the same questions as you did when I first started...
Best thing to do is go into the android development forums or the android original development fund a Rom, read some of the posts and feedback on it, and if you like what your reading try it out due your self.
Some roms are built around the stock TWz JB os so looks wise is minimal but alot of the extra crap removed i.e all att bloat crap apps that you never use, and other tweaks here and there.
All this into can be found on the OPs first post about the Rom, and make sure that Rom is due your phone!
Follow all pre flashing instructions, and backup!!!!!
Just flash and test it out, worst case you can just restore back to your back up and it will be as you never flashed.
There is a link with the most common Roms I'm pretty sure it's a sticky, I always use a rom that active support for it so as issues come up, they get resolved.
This stuff can get very confusing, read, search, and just post Qs some people like my self have no qualms responding to repeat questions as we all were there once before.
But search is your friend
Hope this helps!

I have a few more questions. What is a good backup application? I really know nothing about them so if somebody would reccomend one that would be great! Another thing that drew me to cleanROM is that usefull applications like kies air and dropbox weren't removed. Is this the case with many roms?
Thanks

Dropbox is always downloadable from the play store. Pretty sure it's the same deal with kies air, you can just redownload.
Backup as system is always done in CWM.
Backup applications and data for them,I highly recommend titanium back up, awesome app but phone needs to be rooted, with that app you can backup all your applications, flash a rom then just install titanium backup and restore all applications. It's very nice!

Sorry for the double post, but I just realized after installing titanium that I no longer have root access. My device state is still modified and applications I had before I upgraded to 4.1.1 that needed root still work. However, no new apps that require root will work, and root checkers say my device isn't rooted help please!

So your phone isn't rooted..
Did you try to when you hold vol- and power does the phone boot into recovery mode which should be CWM ... if that happens you are rooted..
Otherwise try to start all over with Odin and the tar files you need to root.

I use Titanium Backup all the time. Everytime I install a new ROM, warranty my phone, or do any sort of wipe. It is amazing!! I dont ever back up system apps tho, just user installed. It backs up everything from the APK to saved games and settings!

Odin is used to root the phone from stock.. it allows you to first install cwm and su ..once that is done, Odin isn't used any longer unless your reverting back to stock, CWM is used thus forward.

If you root you wont be able to install any ota updates (if there are any more coming) to unroot you would need to Odin a stock unrooted ROM. I know there is a sticky thread for unrooting with directions and the links to the stock ROMs.
IMO the 4.2.2 ROMs out right now far exceed any factory updates that will ever be available but to each their own.
-------edit-------
This is also in the wrong forum BTW.

I posted this HERE as I was specifically directed to do so from this site: General
I have NOT updated a ROM, using only stock, also I didn't install a ROM manager.
Sounds as though you are recommending I update the ROM.
I was under the impression if I didn't install a ROM manager, just root wouldn't disable my ability to get OEM updates??

Well, questions go under Help and Troubleshooting. I don't understand why someone would send you to General. That is odd. Also, in the Help/Troubleshooting/Q&A section, there is a handy "No stupid questions" thread.
You might be able to install updates, as you don't have a custom recovery (that's usually the issue). You'll most probably lose root, though. Funky things can happen, though. Safer to unroot before updating OTA, though.

Right, and that's what I'm getting at, because I did NOT install a custom recovery. Okay, wrong place for the post, got it - was directed by a system generated message is all.
Yeah, this is not a stupid question and I would think someone will know the answer based on the method I used to attain root, with my model phone. It either will update, or it won't. I'm trying to understand known future scenarios because I rooted.
And there is a link to UNROOTING here that the system won't allow me list, I tried.

If and when an updated stock ROM comes out, all you have to do is use ODIN to flash it on to your phone and them re-root. That's it. You'll then have the newest stock ROM with root.
That's what I do. I like the stability of a stock ROM but I like having the freedom to freeze or uninstall a lot of the bloat using Titanium.

Ah ok. I'll have to understand the steps necessary to do that.
So flashing a stock ROM removes root, and then re-root the same method as I used.
Thanks all for the input thus far.
To get a better idea I would say YouTube things like how to root samsung galaxy s3 for whatever carrier you have. And YouTube how to unroot for whatever carrier you have.
And I'm sure you will wonder the question of what's a good rom to use and really it would be you're taste and trail and error. And nanroid is another term of making a backup and how to restore them. I'm telling you now for future headaches learn how to make back ups and how to restore them and move your backups to you're pc.
How I do is I use twr and make a backup of you're rom that you're using. And I plug my phone to the pc and go in the folder of twr and find backups and move the file and save it the pc. But you will learn as you go. Clockwork mod is also another recovery and you can make backups with that also

to summarize and simplify:
when updating firmware, you will most likely lose root. download root keeper from the play store to keep your superuser access https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
understand that you may not be able to get the OTA update if you've used your root access to change any system files at all. the updater will check all that before downloading the update and let you know if you're good to go or not.
i would simply wait for an update to release and come back here to xda. in the android development section, you will find a thread that contains stock firmware, both unrooted and with root injected. you can then use odin to flash the latest release and retain root.
cheers

Yeah, that's exactly what my plan is now.
1) Added root via Odin (Mr. Robinson's method)
2) Downloaded Titanium Backup Pro, ran a full backup / set schedules to keep 2 copies of incremental backups weekly.
3) Downloaded various other apps taking advantage of root
4) Created a file system structure on the PC for ROOT / UNROOT
5) Made sure I have the necessary files in each folder including stock ROMs for root / unroot
6) Wrote the procedures to go both directions easily (no forgetting months down the road).
7) Automated backups from the phone to PC
8) Automated backups of ALL on PC to various external media for storage
- I included TriangleAway in case I flash custom ROMs and need to reset my flash counter.
Currently it's state is NO [as the above process did NOT trip the counter].
- My plan is to Odin flash the next stock ROM with root once available as you mentioned. [Will also update the OEM ROM to unroot at the same time.]
Being new to this (and smart phones) - I needed a method to control this device and not allow it to control me.
Now I feel a sense of stability that I can go in either direction, not lose data, and not lose my sanity in the process.
Thanks for your time!
Ok I have a question on this subject so I don't have to start a new thread.
Will our i747 do over the air updates from AT&T after being rooted? Does the phone have to be completely stock unrooted in order to take an over the air? Just wondering. I do have Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper but thought I'd at least ask the question before I update from 4.1.2 to 4.2 or 4.3 soon from AT&T. Any help appreciated!

Need help. I rooted my phone some time back when it was ICS. I reinstalled stock app (after worrying about battery life) and then updated to JellyBean 4.1.1. I kept root.
Today I updated to 4.1.2 [Kernal 3.0.31; Build Nu: JZ054K.I747UCDMG2). I've lost root access. So...I want to root again. Here is the advise / help part.
1) How do I root given than I'm at version 4.1.2? (I can only find instructions for 4.1.1)??
2) What image should I install? Stock? CyMod? I'm always worried about battery life. I get nervous that system will leak power.
Help!!!!
Thanks in advance.

I just recently upgraded to this phone after being very happy with my inspire 4G. I've rooted to remove bloatware, and installed TWRP so I can have the benefits of a custom recovery... but other than that my phone is stock. I updated to 4.1.2 before I rooted.
This method worked for me, with zero hassles:

This is work in progress, have got some ideas to disable Knox(only if you are rooted). Will be updating this thread tomorrow after testing the steps on the loserskater 4.3 release.
This may work but only time will tell.
Don't forget to set SELinux to permissive
Remove the following files:
Code:
(along with any associated .odex files)
/system/app/ContainerAgent.apk
/system/app/ContainerEventsRelayManager.apk
/system/app/KLMSAgent.apk
/system/app/KNOXAgent.apk
/system/app/KnoxAttestationAgent.apk
/system/app/KNOXStore.apk
(entire folders)
/system/containers
/system/etc/secure_storage/com.sec.knox.store
(doubt this one is necessary)
/system/lib/libknoxdrawglfunction.so
And I'm not sure SELinux set to permissive is actually necessary. Been running enforced with root and haven't had any issues yet.
Root persisted through reboot?

No i did not notice this.. I just tryed app with root requairment and no problem. Everything working like before update.
Just wanted to add more information to the table
Yesterday after I found out that 4.3 finally released officially, I Odin'd back to stock and worked my way to 4.1.2, and then 4.3. So my phone is completely virgin, the way it would be if I just bought it and upgraded.
I Used CF-Auto Root to give me root and Superuser. The Odin flash did the job, it rebooted into recovery, did its dark magic, and started the phone normally.
As soon as the phone booted up, it FC. I ignored it, and proceeded to use root explorer to go rename the files given by Loserskater to remove Knox off the system.
As soon as I go to rename the first file, SU again crashes and I get a note about security policy needs to be update. Reading what other users were saying, I let it update.
It then blocked Super User. It won't open, and anything that tries to access it will crash (like using root explorer to do tasks that require root)
I said "Okay, maybe we'll try this again" Second flash of CF-Auto Root worked like it should. SuperUser is still blocked.
I factory reset the phone. SuperUser was there as soon as I boot up, and it FC immediately. Knox still had it blocked.
I was forced to turn off SU for now as to stop getting pop ups.
So, there has been my first few hours with Knox. Not very pleasant.
Any ideas?

Yesterday after I found out that 4.3 finally released officially, I Odin'd back to stock and worked my way to 4.1.2, and then 4.3. So my phone is completely virgin, the way it would be if I just bought it and upgraded.

I think you have to agree to securituy polices before you remove/dissable/rename knox files.

I think you can somehow agree to new polices before you remove knox files and in security in settings... (sorry but i don't realy know how). All i know you need to agree in order to SU work until someone will find some other way. I did same with my S4 and last update to 4.3 and twice to leak to on S3 MJ6.
BTW: I got sim card out on my S3 this maybe case and is wort to try.

To revert back to a fresh state on 4.3 I had to CF autoroot to get the stock recovery installed. Then while in stock recovery I selected apply update from external sdcard. I have found that when using a custom recovery I was not able to go back to a stock 4.3 state. First boot after doing this will take a bit and may even require a reflash.
so...
Does anyone know how to reset the security policies so I can test some more methods?
Or do I need to Odin down again and trudge my way back up

do not use odin to downgrade after installing the ota!!! You will brick your phone
I know there are a ton of other threads regarding Knox out there, I have read more than a few, but I am still having trouble. I have a SPH-L900 (Galaxy Note 2 from Sprint). I recently made the move to 4.3. Prior to this I had 4.1.2 and was Rooted but did not have any custom ROM. I did have a custom recovery, TWRP. I took my device back to stock using a toolkit which I had used to root it in the first place. I then used Kies to upgrade to 4.3. I then proceeded to attempt to root my phone again using CF-Autoroot. It worked but of course Knox reared its ugly head. This sent me searching for how to disable it. Almost everything I tried didn't work. In fact, at one point I thought I totally screwed up my device but was able to find a stock ROM that worked with ODIN. So, I am back to stock 4.3. Here comes my question.
I saw many different methods and options for the N7100/N7150 but things seem to be a little light when it comes to the SPH-L900. How can I root my phone and disable or remove Knox? Most of the methods I saw seem to need root access which Knox is blocking, thus you end up in a loop. The app needs access to remove Knox but Knox won't let it have access. There must be a way to do it, I am just tired of reading forum posts, I just don't have that much time. If anyone has some thoughts or can assist me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.
P.S. Knox is ob-knox-iuos. Like Windows User Account Control.
I used the program kingo root, to root the phone and it also installs supersu. Once thats done simply install root explorer and delete knox related files. Use Odin to flash custom recovery done.

Ok, I will give Kingo Root a try. The problem I find though is that even once my phone is rooted, I try to use Root Explorer or anything else like that and Knox blocks the request for super user authority. Does Kingo Root do something different to allow Root Explorer a chance to do its thing before Knox can block it? I mean I WAS successful in rooting my phone or it seemed I was but Knox kept blocking that super user request. I think it also hides superSU so I couldn't even open SuperSU like the one method said to be able to remove Knox. Knox blocked SuperSU from even opening. I will try your method though and see if I have any luck. Thanks.

Indeed, your method worked. I was able to get rooted and delete all the Knox files. The only weird thing is Kingo Root still says Waiting for Device but it appears everything is done. I pulled the USB cable and it did nothing. It has been like that for several minutes so not sure what to make of that. Maybe just a glitch.
For reference here is a list of where the Knox Files are.

What version of root explorer did you use to delete the knox files? My buddy has this phone ( I'm on S4) and just rooted his phone and has the knox issue. We tried to delete it with root toolbox pro, and it just says deleting and goes on forever without deleting. He tried the free version of root explorer and it says it is a read only file and won't let him delete it. I have been able to avoid the knox issue on my phone, and am loaded on kitkat. We can use TB either because it requires root privilages, and of course knox is blocking supersu.

Actually I used ES Explorer. If you use this app you need to turn on Root Explorer. Hit your Menu button which will pop out a side bar on the left. Scroll down to Root Explorer and flip the switch.
I suggest starting from a fresh flash of stock ROM. Then use Kingo Android Root. Let your phone reboot and then go right to ES Explorer and delete files. Reboot if you want and you should be Knox free. If not then I am not sure where to go. As you see from my OP, I did try a lot of different methods. One thing to also make sure of is the exact model of the phone. Some methods don't work for some models. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, but I just went a head and odin'd twrp and then flashed a custom Rom for him, so all is well now. I am on the S4 and didn't ever accept the 4.3 ota, so never had to deal with knox.
such confuse

Will this trip the KNOX "voided warranty" counter? I am on fresh 4.3 OTA MK4, and I want to be sure not to trip the setting since it is not already tripped. I have been reading many threads for hours now. Am I mistaken, and I need to go back to MC2 before I can do this? Or can I really just use Kingo Android Root, then ES and delete the KNOX files? Or does it only trip the KNOX counter when you flash a custom recovery, which we are not doing in this particular method?
Thanks for any info/clarification
