Who actually will still keep their LG G3? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see a lot of people complaining about the G3 when it comes to the difficulty unlocking the boot loader, and the stutters it has. A lot saying their getting the next android flagship.
Who will actually keep their device and like it for a long period? Cause I feel like I am the only one who loves the G3! I use my nexus 7 for my ROM addiction. Although will be great if the G3 bootloader gets unlocked!

you can add a poll
it will be very reflective
im keeping mine irrespective of the bootloader issue

I love my G3, and will keep it, but love also to unlock the bootloader

Think ill just do that soon (Y)

Keeping mine, no other phone is close. G3 tweaks provides enough for me

I personally will not keep the G3 for a long peroid of time as I tend to move on to the next android flagship when it is released, but this year I do plan to get the next iPhone for the first time in years

When they bring custom launchers, EASY rooting and more camera features, I may be very tempted. But until then, Android fanboy ftw lol

Poll is up! It has a character limit on so couldn't give as much options as I liked in the answer options.

I will. And i will see haw bootloader unlock from devs

My daughter will get mine. I will get the Nexus 6

Definitely keeping my g3. I love it

No point me changing it at the moment. All the high end Android phones are pretty much the same.
Locked boot loader doesn't bother me as I don't want a AOSP ROM, want to keep the LG features.

Too many issues that should have been fixed before release like the auxiliary port cutting out while listening to music. I can't keep unplugging and re plugging the jack while driving. The screen also neds to be brighter in direct sun light.

THIS.
The recent apps function is also extremely delayed, which pretty much negates the point of even having a recent apps button.

Keeping it and very happy. Stock, no issues.

Is this just a car input/output issue? When I wear headphones on bus for an hour never had any cut outs.

I'm extremely happy with mine. For some reason I don't experience the same issues as everyone else. I don't know if I got lucky our what but no lag here, no aux issue, excellent battery with no over heating.

[Q] Am I the only one who enjoys this phone

I see post about laggy and blah blah I mean this phone isn't perfect but with some adjustments it's a bad ass phone I love it I mean I would love root but it's not a reason to return the phone or anything.. Just saying this phone is really good imho
I agree. It's just that the shortcomings are detrimental for the user experience depending on the issue.
I can see battery life being one if you're a busy person.
Touch screen will drive anyone absolutely bananas
All depends on the batch I guess
Im loving the phone, prob best I've had. Not having root is a small problem but I'll live with that. I've not had touch screen issues or over heating problems.
Its not you, people who are happy dont *****. You only hear the complainers, and there are always going to be people who expect manufactured products to be flawless with no exception or fail rate. Just not realistic. The phone is really nice, has great picture and a great camera.. I have owned several different brands and recently an S6. THere is nothing wrong with this phone. I do feel that at this current rate we may never see root, but i also find this being the first phone that would not be and end all problem for me. If you are happy with the phone, what else matters?
I love it. I do wish tap to wake and the knock code worked better, but they'll be fixed someday. They do seem to work better after rebooting, so I reboot occasionally throughout the day when I'm putting my phone away.
Once we get root and custom roms this phone will be awesome.
Be sure to block the OTA updates so the carriers can't prevent you from getting root!
The G4 is a very well balanced product. Like anything though it has its flaws and it won't please everyone, namely as we all have different likes but most important expectations.
I never expect for my phone's purchased to act like a time travelling device (although beam me up scotty that would be cool ?).
What i do expect is functionality and the G4 meets that for me. Just one thing that Google needs desperately is better optimisation between software & hardware.
Android M who knows may be the answer to our prayers.
But overall hell yeah the G4 is good ?
I think the phone is perfect in most all ways. Software can be buggy and lag at times but that will all get cleared up soon enough!
I upgraded from a Galaxy S5 and even though it isn't a huge leap in terms of performance and battery life (battery life quite the opposite, unfortunately) I enjoy my phone very much.
And as I have an international H815 I rooted it the first day I could unlock the BL. 10A was silky smooth and my only "regret" is that I actually flashed 10C. It's a bit less smooth, a bit laggier now and then. Could be an app too, though. So. all things considered I'm very happy. I don't understand why the leather back doesn't have Qi but that's a different beef ..
Great phone, great UI (though I hate having to use an app like ROM Toolbox to change font and the korean crap themes from LG are absolutely horrible).
Regarding all the threads about problems and issues .. Well, that's what XDA is mostly about. You don't need to discuss how great a phone works, you need to discuss and solve problems..
And since no one's, as far as I can understand it, developing custom roms/CM-builds for it yet all you could discuss are problems.
Does it seem like G4s have lots of issues? Not really. Considering the volumes of manufactured phones you will always have broken phones that slipped through quality control. Firmwares are tested but it's impossible to soak test/lab test a phone's software with every app in the App Store..
Not to mention issues with carriers like the retarded US carriers that disable features and sideload their own generic crapware apps and push updates like there's no tomorrow...
All the forums of all the phones I've had since I started reading XDA have looked exactly the same: Early adopters with, sometimes, premature software/firmware ***** and moan, after a while custom roms/root happen and people cheer like madmen, then ***** and moan about premature custom roms.
And the circlejerk is complete.

I have the H815 rooted with TWRP and I couldn't be happier with this phone. I don't have touch screen issues, or lag issues, or camera issues, etc. Coupled with the battery and sdcard promos, it was a win/win/win for me when I bought this phone.

I have actually been LOVING my G4. My old daily driver was the Galaxy Note Edge but then I stumbled on this fella (my first in the G-Series and second LG device) and kind of fell in love with it right off the bat.
So I ended up picking up one for a new daily driver. Right after that though I found out about the no-root issue so then I went out and picked up a couple more of them (I figure I might as well do my part as far as root goes and that will probably end with me bricking one or two of them, so better safe than sorry).
TL;DR -- Yes, I love the hell out of this phone.

What I came from a note edge as well at first I was worried I made a mistake but his phone is better I just missing having the edge but not a reason to go back
I love my G4! The only annoyance is the slow charging when the screen is on..

Done with the Turbo 2

Well, it was a nice device, in concept. But, after 5 replacements for various defects, I'm done. I ordered the Samsung S7. Never owned a Samsung before, but I have to assume the support is better than the new Lenovo owned Motorola. I've been a loyal Moto customer since the OG Droid in 2010. Plus, these phones are too big. I'm not a huge guy, so a screen that is hard to hold, and fit in my pocket is a non starter. Hopefully, the battery is decent on the S7, and the phone reception is good. Otherwise, I can live without some of the great Moto software features, as nifty as they are. Software isn't much use when the screen is defective, or people can't hear me talking.
I must admit when I saw the title, I thought you were gonna leave because of the lack of MM update. Sorry to hear you've had so many problems with this phone, I hope the S7 brings you good luck.
You will hate how locked down the s7 is. Should of went 6p. I sold my turbo 2 for a 6p and love it. I had 2 turbo 2's never had an issues but the battery life on my 6p is about the same and I get USB type c unlocked and a fingerprint reader so this is more of what I wanted.

I had the S5 and I really miss it. I thought I would like the Turbo 2 but it hasn't lived up to any of the promises so far, except I haven't tested the toughness of the screen. My replacement Turbo 2 came in today and I'll get it setup tonight. If it fails me, I'll get the S7 Edge because of the larger battery than the regular S7.
I've only had this phone for 2 months and it's developed hardware problems. I never had a hardware problem with the S5, just some stupid lack of updates from Samsung AND Verizon. I was lured by Motorola's false advertising of 3 days of battery life. I can't get 1 day of battery life if I actually use the phone. If I leave it face down and don't touch it, I could probably get 3 days. Face up, the stupid motion sensor (that I haven't figured out how to turn off) wakes up the screen all the damn time. The battery lasts 1 day, less than a day or just over a day and a half in my experience over the last 2 months. A day and a half was with VERY minimal phone usage.
I wish you the best with the S7 and I hope it's far better than this POS.

I don't believe Verizon ever said 3 days of battery. What I saw was up to 48 hours with mixed usage.
I average almost 20 hours and 5.5 OST.
Much better than the M8 I had before it.

Sadly we don't have girls (or they're really rare) here to confirm the size really matters
The 6P is a huge phone and ugly as sin. Great for updates, but if you aren't a front speaker aficionado (which I'm not) then it is just ugly and wasted space.

I've had my Verizon turbo 2 since about 2 weeks after release and have had 0 hardware problems and haven't replaced it once. You're either really clumsy or really unlucky. People don't know how to take care of their phone and I'm assuming you're one of those people, considering you've replaced it 5 times. As far as the battery life I'm a heavy user and push 24 hrs before I'm out of battery. Learn how to train it and uninstall stuff that eats up the battery. I see so many people leave like 100 different apps open in the task manager (the built in one of course) and it kills me. They wonder why their phone is so slow or why it's always dead so quick and their too ****ing lazy to click a button and kill tasks. Anyways I'm sure you don't have the ignorance of people like that otherwise you wouldn't be browsing and posting on XDA. The only reason I would see me moving on from this phone is for root and BL unlock. I love my Roms and kernels. When I was still in school I had a gs3 that I had a new ROM on every day I came to school lol. I miss that **** but I just don't wanna go back to Samsung's mediocre feeling phones, just not a trade-off I'm willing to make. But if that's what you want, all power to you man and gl.
Believe it or not, people have been unlucky and have had hardware issues (green line issues and power button issues to name a few), consider yourself lucky.

I can attest to this, my first turbo 2 had a green line the first time I turned the phone on 2 days after release, fortunately I hadn't walked out the door yet so they swapped it out immediately. as for the power button issue, surprisingly making a seal with your mouth and blowing hard seems to dislodge whatever dust might be getting stuck and fixes the issue (found this solution online, it has worked like a charm)
This is truly unbelievable, I paid off my DT2 600.00 that I got in October. Nothing wrong with it, excellent shape. I pre ordered the s7 edge and was going to trade it in and knock down the price a little on my new one. ISYN, they only offered me 36.53 for it! I thought was a mistake so I asked several times. Looks like I will keep this one as a backup.
They always say NOT to use task killers

just for the recordd, i think the hardware issues probably have more to do with how verizon handles. stores and ships devices cuz its nvr seemed to matter what kind of phone ive had ive always had 3-6 warranty exchanges, and we all know those dnt come brand new in the box, usually actually someone elses defect return. there arnt 10000 dt2 out there that are defective, there are 1000 and vzw has sent them to 10 people each :/
Unfortunately, the only way to have a brand new phone is to be first in line opening morning release day. And even then, that you don't receive a phone that has already been tested/used by a Verizon employee and repackaged. Fortunately, knock on wood, I have my original purchased opening morning.

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with your phone sir. I've had nothing but awesomeness with mine. I will admit I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of dev support for the DT2. I would love to learn how to Dev for this, but I'm way too busy with life. I left Samsung bc I got tired of the VERY SLOW AND LAGGING OS. I would've gone the Nexus route, but I've really been impressed with Lenovarola lately. I know some of you aren't but I'm having good luck.
Anyway best of luck to you on your Samsung!
Okay, had the T2 since 3 days after launch. The Green Line appeared about two months ago, got a replacement. The mic would not work unless on speakerphone. Got a replacement and now the phone all too often heats up, and I get instant battery drain. When this happens, I lose about 30% of the charge in 20 minutes... Plus, little tiny scratches on the phone screen. I have never had a screen saver on any phone, and never had a problem...

Overall love

I didn't see that before but i love this feature, i'm extremely please with this phone so far. Just looking at the phone at how beautiful it is and it's a pleasure just to hold it.
Using multiple devices a year I would say this is the first Chinese OEM outside of OnePlus that has produced a phone I would consider a good daily driver. The ROM is close to stock Android but not as close as OnePlus which for me is a bummer. I'd much rather see ZTE keep things simple as their hardware design language and features are a big step up from OnePlus for me. the dual SIM or MicroSD+SIM option along with good speakers are key selling points for me. All of the basics are here and it runs circles around my Nexus 6 performance wise for my day-to-day use which entails a LOT of email using Nine Folders Microsoft Exchange client.
The ONLY thing that bugs me about this phone is the buttons not being backlit and spaced out a little more..
Other than that, the phon is lightning fast, charges extremely quickly, (An hour and 10 minutes for a full charge), has a beautiful feel, and the speaker quality is out of this world
I thought long and hard about buying this phone. I watched just about every online review I could find and in the end I made the choice on the basis that I could return it within the first 30 days should I dislike it. I must say after 2 and a half days, I got nothing but love for this phone. There are a few things I dislike but they are all things I knew about from the various reviews so I already tailored my expectations prior to getting the device. If anyone is on the fence about this device, take the plunge and get it. It's well worth it.

Same! In my car, when I connected the auxiliary to the phone my speakers FLEXED! Sound was significantly louder, more clear, more fidelity, and WAY more rich, full, seat shaking bass.
I used to need viper for every phone or tablet I had... But this phone kind of just makes that irrelevant..

Anyone Regret Buying This?

As the title asks, anyone regret buying this phone? I will be ordering mine shortly, but I have seen a few issues, like aluminium coating peeling off, purple tint in camera photos, back glass part being awfully scratch prone etc., so got me thinking a bit. Who are already using it, does it feel like worth the most expensive Android phone on the market?
I've been nothing but pleased with it. I always keep my phones in a case. I was really happy with my Nexus 6P and this phone has been the next logical step from that. Haven't once been disappointed by it.
No regrets so far after 2 weeks. Normally I've been the type that goes back to iOS after I play with Android quite a bit, but in my opinion, Google has achieved the stability of iOS on this phone. The only thing I miss is iMessage but it's really not that huge of a deal.
I just don't like the size. When i go back and hold my Axon 7, it feels tiny in comparison!
Thanks guys. So 100% positive feedback then. The main two reasons I am considering this are the software experience and the camera, while former is the main thing. I'm curious as to what things work with Google Now but not with the Assistant.
Assistant can't read you your text messages is the biggest one for me. Can't start stopwatch or do lists in Keep. Just does one list. There might be more but that's what I can think of right now.

Agreed. I have no problem with the dimensions and while many knocked it, I'm finding myself indifferent to the design language of the Pixel.
The phone runs like a dream. Unfortunately in my experience, Assistant does not. It really should be able to do some of the more basic things but to hold me over I've been using IFTT to somewhat offset it's limited functionality.

Also the Bluetooth problem with GM products drives me nuts. Google takes too long to fix things. I believe Apple would have fixed that already. If it's not fixed on this next update I'm going to try really hard to return it. Doubt they will since I'm past my 15 days. I almost returned it everyday. The phone is good just too many bugs. Some were there in the previews and were never fixed. Fix those couple things and this is the best phone IMO.

Just having a mental cancer using these Samsung phones for long term. I have been told Pixel has THE BEST Android experience so far, I just wanted to know whether that's true or not.
Thanks once again for commenting guys.

I was at first a little put off by the camera. I had a note 7 for like a week before the Pixel (The nexus 6p was my daily driver until I got the note 7). I really liked the Note 7 as well. Specifically the camera. And the Pixel XL camera seemed worse at first... Then I opened the pictures on my desktop. The Pixel XL was noticeably better. The screen on the Note 7 just made them seem better due to the super high color saturation, The pixel screen is much more true and neutral. Didn't mention it earlier.
It is in fact the best Google software experience I've had to date.
A solid no. I have had is a week now and I like more each day.

Yeah about that screen, well I really wish that they calibrated in even more naturally. In the sRGB mode even the phones like OnePlus 3 defeats it, in grayscale accuracy I mean, that's the thing I don't like, its still a device which can't defeat other flagship phones like S7, iPhone 7 etc., it should have been calibrated better. I HATE over saturation of any sorts.
PS: Decision is made, buying it, just now need to decide which one. God these bezels!
Thanks a lot for all your inputs guys, appreciate it.
I'm torn. Should I get rid of my HTC 10 and a get a pixel XL?

Bugger screen yes, but not big enough considering bezels.. My opinion is that the htc 10 is more fun phone and if u r a flash junky u will be happier with the 10 cus there isnt really much u can play with on the pixel cus of its pure stock android.. Dunno what u want in a phone but the htc in terms of software will be like month or max two behind the pixel

So I've had my XL for nearly a month, and the jury is still out. I have a Mazda, and pretty much every other time I get in the car the phone will not stay connected to the car (and the car never recognizes the phone even when the phone says it is connected). There is a solution when this happens: turn off Bluetooth, turn it back on and then manually connect to the car. Then everything is fine.
Then there is the stutter-ringing. When someone NOT on my contact list calls for the first time, the phone rings for nearly a second, then acts like a hangup, then rings again, etc. until T-Mobile times out and sends the caller to voicemail. The call log shows 4-5 unanswered calls from that caller, and when it is stuttering, it is impossible to get the timing right and answer the call. Once the caller is in the call log, though, it works fine literally every time after that. Delete the call from the log, and it starts with that caller again. Does not do this with any contact or anyone in the call log.
Finally there is the weird times when the phone decides to lock even though it is connected to a trusted device, or is in a trusted location. Like 1-3 mornings per week when the phone decides sometime over night to make me re-enter my PIN even though it is connected to my watch AND at home, both with trust relationships. The rest of the week? No problem, no lock, business as usual.
The phone is great, it is fast and mostly works as expected. But there are just enough quirks to be seriously annoying. Plus this is supposed to be a consumer phone - I was more willing to be out there on the edge with my Nexus devices, but if I gave this to my Mom I would be on endless support calls. And I paid a premium price so the expectation is much higher.

Smoothness Becomes Less Eventually?

The first day I got the phone, it was so smooth that I couldn't believe it. Now after one month's usage it feels less smooth. I notice stutter here and there, while scrolling through WhatsApp list, while entering and exiting apps etc. Is this because the performance is degrading or am I just getting used with it and my mind demands more?
In any case, will a custom ROM like PureNexus be any better in terms of this? I'm on ElX kernel.

Nah, it will be the same. Allot of it is just the app not being smooth, not the OS. Over time the cache builds and things just stutter some. The device is still a beast

Hard to say for sure, but for the most part I feel like its just as smooth as day one. In fact, I was thinking recently how impressed I was that I hadn't reboot my phone for 3 weeks and its been rock solid stable and buttery smooth the whole time. I'm on full stock, rooted with TWRP.

I haven't noticed any speed degradation - had XL over a month now.
It's still a piece of ****, but it's still fast.
I cannot believe you people orgasming over this garbage phone.
I'm only keeping it because FI is so cheap for low data usage.

My previous phone was a Note 7. My standards are a bit high... If you are not familiar with Note 7, it's like trading in a Bugatti Veyron for a Mustang (and yes, I own a Stang.)

Not to get too OT but I gotta step in and say something. What are you doing here on XDA? Every time I go into a thread I'm bound to see a post from you just ****ting all over this phone. Your comments are unconstructive and extremely off-putting. Some posters here have had their phone for a month or so, maybe less. If you went out a bought a new Mustang and someone came up to you and said "That car is a piece of ****, I can't beleive you like that thing." you'd feel pretty bad right? Or at least ticked off. I get that you miss your Note 7, I really do. Hang in there and you'll get your Note 8 soon enough.

Back on topic, the phone is still smooth as hell for me. It'll trip on a few things here and there but it's really so minor and occurs so rarely that when I catch it I question if it actually even happened. If that makes sense.. I think when we start to see optimized ROMs and Kernel devs begin merging in cherry-picked updates to Sched and upstream updates, things will get near flawless with this phone. The one thing that concerns me is the lack of F2FS. The storage speed on this phone is pretty lacking, as discussed in my thread discussing why the OP3T with similar hardware is so much faster than this phone. F2FS is much easier on the phone's storage whereas EXT4 will eventually lead to performance degradation over time. Again, I feel that Kernels will rectify this in the future.
Another facet of this might just be that you're used to the speed by now. I'm sometimes still amazed by how much faster this phone is at certain tasks than my Nexus 5X, but when I first got this phone I was in awe nearly all the time when using it. Now it just seems normal to me.
I am coming from using an S7 (which has the same ram and processor as the Note 7) and this Pixel is MUCH faster than my S7 was.
I myself had the Note 7 and this phone puts the Note 7 to shame in a speed comparison. My note 7 lagged like no other. Maybe mine was a defective one but my Pixel XL is blazing fast even after about 2 months of usage. ?

If you don't like the phone, why are you even on XDA? Just use the phone until you can get rid of it and keep your crappy opinion to yourself. These threads aren't meant for discussing how bad it is. The idea is that we all work constructively with the hopes of achieving the best possible user experience for everyone

Yes, I mentioned that in OP for that reason only. I am sure that my mind is getting used with the smoothness and it demands more, much more
Just got to give the devs time. Perfection takes time.
I personally moved away from Samsung a while back. Last sammy device i had was the Note 4.
I still have an S3 mini which in all reality is a "piece of garbage"but all i use it for is a glorified MP3 player while im out doing work and i dont wish to possibly destroy my PixelXL or whatever im using.
But back on track. Samsungs devices least back in the day were very well built! And aside from Touchwiz not to terrible!
But this Pixel XL blows me away. I came to this device from a Nexus 6 which I absolutely loved! The Pixel XL has surprised me since day 1! Im currently running Pure Nexus on it. Its the initial build as the second build wasnt important enough for me to update. Dont mind that i cant shut down. (LOL)
I reboot my device a couple times a week as a pure habit. I feel a fresh start every so often is never a bad thing.
One thing to possibly try if an app becomes sluggish is clear the apps cache while you see it being a bit of a jerk.
If that doesnt help. Clear the system cache in recovery and see if that helps. Your first boot might take a bit longer but you could see a difference.
My suggestion to you is. Try out Pure Nexus. Or any custom rom for that matter! There are several now. We have 2 boot slots to use on this device which is fantastic! If you dont like a certain rom? Try another! Or.... go back to your stock slot! Just read up and educate yourself on how the boot slots work and what happens during flashing. Its not like our old school Safe Strap from back in the day! (Or multiROM for that matter) Well kinda.... but works differently.
Enjoy Pixelers!

I'm venting here because I'm searching for a way to fix my brand new beautiful Mustang - you see, one tire is constantly losing pressure and the trunk just straight up doesn't close.
In other words, I'm extremely frustrated with my brand new $930 device. And the fact that Google just released a 50MB security update and still didn't fix a crippling BT bug introduced in 7.1.1 doesn't help the issue.

If I remember correctly from Mario's front page article on the OP3T, F2FS can be enabled through TWRP. I recall tidy one reason it's not enabled by default on most devices is some remaining bugs/issues to sort out.

Took me a while to find it but Jerry Hildenbrand had some interesting thoughts on bluetooth issues with Nougat and how they're potentially related to bluetooth stack and certain hardware that people are trying to pair their Android N phones to. Look for his posts in this thread:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-pixel-pixel-xl/755478-there-speaker-issue.html
I don't know whether he's on the mark here or not. . All I do know is that I have no issues with connectivity with my car, Fossil Q Marshal or JBL Charge 2+ . . all relatively new devices . . so i do wonder how some are experiencing issues while others like myself are not.
-----
Back on topic - IMO loss in smoothness always boils down to resources as users settle into devices and continue to add software and tweaks to their devices. The more we use the device and add to it, the more apps start to battle for resources either in terms of running services or cached ones. The variation in now we each use our devices leads to variation in experiences as the OS deals with balancing available resources against the services and apps that need to be running vs cached.

Jerry Hildenbrand? That weird beard mofo? How can he possibly fix a bt bug that was introduced in a recent Google update?
First just don't feed the trolls.
I would definitely recommend a custom rom.
The one that said customs are the same than stock just flashed the wrong roms.
Pure is much smoother and snappier than stock.
And there are roms that feels like night and day if it comes to smoothness.
So just try them out and you will see and feel the difference.
