I'll be quick with the story, the phone fell from waist height screen down onto tiles and smashes a huge portion of the bottom, the phone still works however I can see discoloration on the screen meaning the LCD is definitively broken however I can still use the phone. I have researched and sending it to repair with HTC will cost me £150 which is way too much and I don't want to risk buying a fake £50 screen of ebay and then risking again with fixing it myself unless it's absolute necessary.
What I thought about doing was:
Asking a phone repair shop (I live in Birmingham UK) about how much it would cost to replace it? If it's anything under £90 I think I could agree to it.
Thank you for the answer up front because in the past 2 weeks I have developed a strong bond with this beast and it breaks my heart to see my baby shattered .

Second option is the one I am most questionable about and I would like someone to advise me on. I was thinking about signing up for an insurance plan (I am currently with Vodafone, no insurance) then waiting some time and then claim on the insurance and receive a new phone, my question is; would that work? How long would I have to wait? Will I have to subscribe to some kind of premium plan for it to work? If so how much would it cost?
Thank you for the answer up front because in the past 2 weeks I have developed a strong bond with this beast and it breaks my heart to see my baby shattered .

Have you only had the phone for 2 weeks? My HTC One X screen cracked after just 2 weeks of ownership. I sent it off to HTC and received a quote of $300 SGD (I live in Singapore these days but it's about 150 quid) I complained stating that I had owned 3 HTC devices over the last 5 years (Diammond, Desire, Desire HD) and never cracked a screen, yet with the HTC One X and it's supposedly hardended Gorilla Glass the screen broke is under 2 weeks. It took 3 phone calls and a week without my phone, but they halfed the repair quote to $150 (75 quid).
My friend's screen completely shattered after the phone fell off the couch and he also managed to get it repaired for $150... just call up and argue your point.
If you do get it repaired make sure you buy a case and screen protector, I'm convinced that even just a little bit of cushioning on the screen goes a long way with these screens.

Yes 2 weeks today, I too had two HTC's in the past, a Wildfire and a Desire and they both went through hell of usage (especially the Desire) The cases on both phones were scratched and dented but the screens were perfectly fine with slight scratches, barely visible. My mother has a Desire S which also goes through rigorous and clumsy use and my father has the Sensation which I could also add to the conversation with HTC.
My question is how can I argue with them? If they disagree what should I do? Just hang up? Please if you can give me more detail about your case, you shed light on this dark day for this sir I thank you .
I have phoned HTC and arranged it to be picked up for repairs on Monday, the phone operator has said that if it's just the screen to be replaced then it will cost me about £100 which hurts but I don't mind however I am sure they will try and charge me more, I have also mentioned that the screen had flickered before and it was unresponsive (It sometimes wouldn't pick up the touch however after cleaning the screen properly it worked again) so I will try arguing heavily when I get the quote.
To be honest, this is why phone insurance exists...

I had to just continue arguing that the phone is advertised as having unbreakable Gorilla Glass and was even throw on the floor during some press conferences, yet my screen broke withint 2 weeks without being mistreated. Don't just hang up, ask to speak to their supervisor if the person on the phone is unable to help you. I had to speak to 3 different people, but mine broke within 2 weeks of it being released. My friend broke his after 4 months and was quoted $150 after just one phone call to them. I think they must be getting a lot of complaints about the screens, so fingers crossed it will be easy for you

When booking my phone for repair the person I have spoke to said that they will quote the price of the repair through email and I should also respond through email, will I still be able to get to them through a phone? They have also said that if it's just the screen that needs replacing then the repair should cost about a £100.
And just a question on the side, did they hard reset your phone? I'm just wondering because they have no reason to really...
Thanks again for the reply!

It's worth trying to give them a call.
They will install the RUU to return it to stock, they always do. It's quick, cheap, easy, and probably fixes a large portion of the problem phones they receive. There are simply too many apps that misbehave for them not to want to do this.
Obviously in your case, it's not required, but they will probably want to run a test afterwards in a clean environment.
I have received a quote for £146, rang HTC twice and both of the operators told me there is nothing they can do about it, it's up to the service repair center and no matter what my argument was they would just repeat themselves until one of them said I could raise a complain and they should get back to me within 3 days (funny thing because upon asking wherever I could raise a complain with the second operator they said there is no way of doing that). Is what they are saying true?

let's be honest, the phone isn't advertised as having 'unbreakable gorilla glass' ( i know it wasn't you that said that , but either way it's bull****)
it's advertised to have gorilla glass, which is advertised to be stronger than normal glass. do remember that glass is very fragile, gorilla glass is still glass after all.
to be honest, i don't see why htc should give a discount? you dropped it, its not their fault, why should they pay for it!
i know it sounds harsh, and all you want is it to work again, but you can't blame htc for it, thats just ridiculous.
EDIT: quite frankly, i think it's stupid that they gave anyone a discount for a smashed screen. whoever authorised that probably has been either fired or had a warning by now..
Good day dear xda-developers community,
I have a very strange problem, searching the net did not bring any results so I thought I'd ask the guys here, perhaps somebody has had a similar problem as well.
A couple of months ago my video card broke, I could start up my phone but had a lot of artefacts so I brought it to the store I bought it at and they sent it out for repairs under warranty conditions. I got the phone back and I had no artefacts anymore so I was more than happy.
A couple of days after that I noticed a scratch on the screen, a small one but still quiet noticeable. The phone was never dropped and always carried in the pocket, so I thought to my self "ohh well, I guess this could happen".
Now though, a couple of weeks using the phone I have a strange feeling that the screen that was put on my phone after replacement isn't Gorilla Glass at all, it feels weird when you touch it, not as smooth and there is A LOT of grease that stays on the phone, never really noticed any in a whole year using the phone before, plus the proximity sensor doesn't always work, when I bring the phone to my ear I have to do it a couple of times before it goes out.
Now here's what I am wondering, is there any way to check whether the screen is Gorilla Glass or not, and that the company hasn't just put some cheap replacement glass on my phone to save up money?
Anybody got any idea what's up?
well the easiest thing to do it putting two HOX side by side and compare the two screens i guess
Go back to the shop and demand a detailed repair overview. Your entitled to one since its your phone !
Or let them take it in for another repair/research. Just dont take no for an answer.

I guess we were both duped and had some clone screen put into our phone instead of the original HOX screen, which really sucks, cause I don't even know how to prove that, also I noticed that I have 2 yellow spots on the left-top side of the screen, they are very well visible on the white background and they get even Yellower as the phone gets hotter.

Wauw thats what I had when I just got mine brand new..its a known issue with the One X
It has to do something with the glue..better get it replaced and ask for the old screen so you can check if its a clone.
Hope it will work out well for you bro, I took my loss as they will not give me a refund..

They won't give you a refund, but did you try getting it fixed? is it covered by the warranty? The problem is that I bought it in the netherlands and I was just there a couple of weeks ago, had the phone done and went back to Belarus, where we don't the HTC service centres. I will have to wait till I go to the netherlands again to give the phone back into repairs.

No refund here in Macedonia, the service told me I dropped the phone which I did not...
I am trying to find a replacement screen with digitizer
It pains me to even talk about this but... This morning I dropped my six day old G3 on to an escalator step (you know the kind, sharp and metal:crying. The phone itself is working and screen is unscathed (phew!), however the plastic bezel/bumper (?) that goes around the screen on the side of the phone has cracked on the bottom left corner and scuffed on the top left.
I know it's early days still, but does anyone know of where there might be spare parts available? Or should I just cry myself to sleep and stay at home forever...
(To rub it in, I had a shiny new official "Slim Hard Case" waiting in my mailbox this evening. FML)
Any chance you had a warranty?

I have warranty but that doesn't cover my own accidental damage. I do have home insurance that covers things like this but I'd rather not go down that route just yet as it would involve reformatting the phone, sending it back, buying a new one, reinstalling everything and so on...

Lol, I've done the same, dropped it on concrete a couple of times and the edges are dinged up. Short pockets + Huge phone are not good. If you cant find phone parts on chinese websites *ali*, you might have to wait a couple months for them to be released.
it would also be not to your advantage to claim home owners insurance on your phone.. it could hurt down the road.
Sorry for your phone trauma :crying:
I only have the G3 because of a similar incident with my S4 which managed to destroy the digitizer.
Did you buy it with a credit card? Most cards give free insurance for up to 90 days! Just call and ask.
Won't the case cover that part? It might hurt resale value but if you can't see it, no biggie.
You think that is sad...
I dropped my LG g3 and it hit the concrete. I wish it had only scratched the back or dinged the bezel.
the screen only recognizes touch on about the bottom two thirds of it.
I do have a SquareTrade warranty so we will see how their claims process works.

They helped me out when I dropped my f400s off my balcony while taking pictures. It fell a few stories and well was not repairable so I got another g3. The process was fast about a week from when it happened to get paid but they should be able to fix yours.

I think this phone may be too fragile for me. I'm not used to such a large phone and I don't really want to get a beefy case to protect it. So I will see what SquareTrade does. I'll let you guys know.

My phone was out of its case, and it fell 3 stories (I live on a hill with a small creek behind it and it tumbled town onto the rocks) so once it fell I knew it was going to be a bad day. Thankfully I now have a new one, but life happens, I'm just glad I had ADH on my warrantee through them.
Today I had the M9 in a window mount for GPS. After arriving, I took it from the holder to see the sapphire glass had a big crack through it. This phone is 6 days old, hasnt been dropped or anything. Always in a case and always in an inside pocket or on the sofa arm in my house when not in my hand.
It looks a clear case of insurance

That's not good & one would expect the sapphire to hold up to even high temperatures.
Insurance & or return for replacement.

Yeh can understand why, hopefully an isolated incident.
Get back as soon as you can & good luck.
Looks like the case is scratched and the camera glass looks like it has an impact point on it..
It definately isnt or hasnt. I sed to work in mobile retail so I know excactly how it looks and sounds. But can guarantee that it nothing has impacted it.
Also IRL the crack is perfect and there is no impact point visible

Were you climbing trees? Bro you must be like Tarzan. Sorry to hear that.
That's crazy. The sapphire glass on that is supposed to be tougher than gorilla glass.

I'm not am expert in this area, but don't assume too much about sapphire. Though its very scratch resistant due to its hardness, it is also very brittle, and can easily chip or crack especially when impacted on an edge or corner.
Did not know that. Thanks for the info. I really don't want a case but I might have to buy one.

You aren't the only one to have this happen to their M9 friend. I was lucky enough to be a part of the HTC champions program and have had the HTC m9 since before it was available to buy. Somehow or another the glass on my camera lens cracked as well. The device had previously never been dropped (was in a case) and at the time was in a box. I'm now wondering if the glass is cracking due to some sort of heat issue.
I had to use the "uh-oh" insurance to have repaired unfortunately.
My htc one m9 dev edition was always in a case from day one never dropped or mishandled , I have been looking at the camera glass every time I put it down because of this post and I always lay it down on the face of the screen because temper glass protector and case keeps it from touching the table. I just came back to my phone and there is a clean crack from top to bottom almost in the center of the camera glass. Now I don't know what to do I ordered directly from HTC I guess I will be contacting them, I love the phone but I am not to happy about this.
update: Chatting with HTC Support they have no knowledge of this issue.
update: Only option given was to use my uhoh protection, I declined because if this is a common problem it should be fixed and what if it happens again, having reference number made so I can contact a supervisor when I get home.
update: 1-866-449-8358 is the number HTC has given me and it sends me directly to a operator saying to check the number and try again, I have really started to dislike this whole experience and seeing how its still under 30 days that I just got off the phone with their third party order center Digital River they said I will receive a shipping label in a few days to mail the device back, I really don't want to go to another device but after this I might, if I do stay with the One m9 Ill just order through my carrier to make a much less painless return if it happens again, but after all the wasted time there are other devices from manufactures that I never had any problems with.
My M9 camera cracked too
Hey guys, my camera cracked as well after 2 days of owning it with no sort of mishandling it at all. I just pulled it out once and noticed the camera is cracked. It would be really nice of HTC to recognize it is faulty hardware & offer to replace it for M9 owners...
Lens glass cracked within 24hrs of owning it
Lens glass cracked within 24hrs of owning it, took it back to Sprint. They won't replace it.
Well I am jumping ship, even though I really like this phone, I feel the company is becoming a joke, all tech support can do via chat is issue a uhoh protection and good luck reaching htc in the USA, seems they must have forgot to pay the phone bill. This issue needs to be proven and known but I am not going to spend my money on quality testing, hopefully they will revise the part, but without enough people complaining I doubt anything will be done. It almost feels like it is intentional to get us out of the uhoh protection.
Same thing happened to my phone a few weeks ago. I let my phone charge overnight, woke up & it was blazing hot. I thought nothing of it. I was looking at my phone & noticed a clean crack on the lens. I sent it back and it wasn't counted as a UH-OH protection. That's a plus.
Hi everyone,
I am seriously considering buying the Moto Z2 Force as a replacement of my old Moto X 2014 (I still love it but my screen got a bit shattered one year ago:crying.
The only thing that is holding me back is that screen peeling problem I heard of. So, after reading some threads I would like to see how spread the problem is by proposing you this survey.
In case you had the issue, it would be very useful for me to know how you solved (got a replacement, removed the shutterproof screen protector, ...?)
Thanks a lot!
Here I am, replying to my own survey!
Unfortunately, not as I would like to...
I bought it and on day 2 I noticed this issue https://youtu.be/KfEjQWtvckQ which is how everything starts I suppose...?? So, I think this will be a "In the first month case".
Now I have to think of what to do:
Keep it and wait for it... (what then?!)
Send it back to seller asking for a refund => Buy another model, other brand (It would be really sad though)
Send it back to seller asking for a change with another one (what if the new one will have the same issue?)
Removing somehow the screen protector and the glue (any tutorials? Will it void the warranty?)
Any suggestion is much appreciated
Thanks a lot
I knot sure what that video was suppose to show. But to me it showed nothing of importance.. I have had my z2 Force for about 2 months with no issues.. Use a screen protector or a case with one, and you should have zero issues.

The video is supposed to show a problem with the shattershield screen where the outer screen protector lense is detached from the inner layer.
Some people on Lenovo forums reported screen peeling issue after experiencing something like the video shows.
On the same forum, some other people claim they had a screen protector on when the peeling started.
Anyway, I contacted Motorola Support and they:
Confirmed that if you remove the outer layer, the warranty is permanently voided for the whole phone... Not good
Suggested me to refer to the seller for a substitution since I am in the first two weeks after buying the phone
Still deciding what to do...
I tried the tempered glass screen protector I ordered.
It doesn't adhere correctly on the top of the screen but especially on the bottom, near the fingerprint scanner.
So, the screen is not perfectly flat.

I purchased a Otter Box Defender, and that might be why I have no issues.. On my G5 Plus I had a Otter Box commuter and a screen protector and they worked well as well.. If your nervous about that pone, best bet might be to replace with a different model.. I sure as hell would. Good luck.

Have the same issue and can hear that. But it seems to be normal. I can push in the screen a little bit. I think it's not the original foil of the top, which is pelling. I think it's hearable because it's plastic and elastic. I can see (by screen on) that's not the foil while I'm pressing the screen in. It's more the complete screen. Would it be the foil, I wouldn't see what I see by pushing in the screen. Plastic is easly elastic. That's all.
Here is an update.
Yesterday I received the other plastic screen protector I ordered.
It fits perfectly, since it's not as rigid as glass.
Since many of you have the same "clicking" noise while pressing the screen, I think I will try to use it in the next days to see how it goes. I have some weeks to think about keeping it or sending it back to the seller.
Hope everything will be ok, I'll keep you updated

It's not the foil, right? That's the plastic which is"clicking". I'm short-sighted and I'm pretty sure that I can see that's just elastic at the bottom. Looks so that the foil is ok and 100% save on the screen. But it's nice to have a elastic screen  No scratches after month. So, don't need a screen protector. The quality seems good. It's like wings of a airplane. Elastic, too And there is all ok, too. Normally

I am not sure it's the foil or not... However, I don't think is the screen which is moving, that's probably more a refraction effect. We should ask to those that removed the protection layer, if they where experiencing this and after the removal it stopped.
Foil or not, if the "clicking" sound is so common even in devices without peeling issues, I will give it a try.
I just need to use it, only time will say if it was a good idea to keep it :fingers-crossed:

Screen is moving down at the bottom, for me it's 100% so. And if I do it carefully, I can see it without hearing it. But yes, would be nice if anyone can test it without the foil. But, I can trust what I see, all real. So, it's the plastic. Hope anyone else can confirm this.
Another problem, what I have seen. I have burn in at the bottom. The navigation buttons keeps/burn in. Now I have set up the moto fingerprint navigation and it should gone next time. And that's really good. Works very well. And the space of the screen is now bigger, nice effect.
But, good to know with the burn in. This smartphones are made for a short time, maybe 2 years. On my computer monitor I have never seen burn ins like that. So, it's a market/business. Screen not made for working over years
And what really is very very good is the battery. Have last time good 8.5-9h sot. So, that's better than many people think.
But back to the screen. That's the topic here. Maybe we have to bring it to the repair center after 1.5 years. Maybe because burn ins, peeling and so on. We will see
If you guys do the warranty replacement through Motorola and not your carrier they will send you a new moto z2 force with a 2nd gen screen if you ask em about it. They have a fix for it lol I just got mine back and it's totally different

Ok, maybe I have a newer one. Here no scratches after months. Foil ok. Just the clicker at pushing. You don't hear that on your device? Which versions are 2. generation, after which produce date?

What am I supposed to be hearing on my device lol? And idk I just personally call it a 2nd gen screen cause it's easier to explain it like that to the people that I live around in my area ??there not to bright lol. I do know it's not the original shatter screen stuff that was peeling. it honestly was pretty hard for me to understand what my moto agent was saying to me when he explained it so I only caught bits and pieces. My model number is still xt1789-04 TMobile variant. I don't have a clicker also
