[Q] Firewater S-OFF Question - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there
I followed the instructions to the word but unfortunately I couldn't get it to work in the end.
It eventually told me [Remember the golden rule, NEVER TAKE an OTA? OF course you don't. ***device patched by HTC, you are out of lock****]
Does that mean I can NEVER get S-OFF or does it mean I can use a RUU and restore everything to when I just bought it the phone and then try again?
Thanks.

Well if you failed and then the error told you that whatever you do you can't get s-off that way then you have to pay $25 and use the sunshine method. U just went through this last night.

I had the same error because (as it is said) i took an ota. The error means that there is no more exploit for it to work properly. So the only way left is Sunshine for 25$. But there you have only to pay when it works for 100%.

Check out this thread. Of course it worked with hong kong version .708. and nobody confirmed if it works with other versions.

Can somebody provide firewater to version 1.54.401.5 and 1.54.401.10?

If you don't know where you post your own questions than also stop spamming them around ! It's annoying.....

I was able to use firewater in the end by getting a Nandroid Backup performed by another user who backed up the system, data, recovery and everything using Philz Touch Recovery.

I got the Nandroid from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
I assuming this one will work for you:
CID HTC__622
1.60.708.2 - TWRP 2.7.0.2 Thanks to BenPope

You'd need to restore it using TWRP (it will restore system, data, and recovery).

I looked at the thread and found the steps to be quite unnecessary. All you need to do is use TWRP in order to restore system, data, recovery, and boot (you'll see all those under Advanced Options before restoring) and then you'd follow Firewater's guide (posted on his website) in order to go S-OFF. It was fool-proof and quite quick after I restored the stock Nandroid.

Hey it's ok! No, you downloaded a Nandroid ZIP file which you're supposed to extract into the proper location of TWRP backups, which is either SD Card > TWRP > Backups or Root/data/media/TWRP/backups. When you open the Nandroid ZIP, you'll find a folder inside, which is what is supposed to be copied to the proper TWRP directory. After you're done with that, you go to TWRP > Restore and you'll supposedly find it listed and then you tap on it, choose Advanced Options, check YES on everything, and then perform the Restore function.
By the way, I just reread Firewater's instructions and it says that you have to root the stock ROM if it's not rooted and also have an unlocked bootloader (so don't relock it). The instructions are here: http://firewater-soff.com/instructions/

ok, to answer your original question, no you don't need to relock.
what about the command "fastboot erase cache" before and after flashing boot.img and recovery?

next, did you disable any apps?. the ota checks the system integrity, the reason for unrooting, and if there are any changes the ota will fail. so re-enable any apps you may have turned off.
perhaps do a factory reset from recovery if the above does not work, or delete the ota from the the sdcard and try to download it again as it could be a bad download

no bro, i do not disable any apps, i did full wipe including sdcard, i tried factory reset from recovery and redowloaded, and it is not working.
Manually check system/bin and system/xbin folders to make sure there are no su files left. Just in case it hasn't been unrooted correctly. And get an app from play store to check for root

yes, make sure your CID is j_15 and your current ROM is the last one.
get the outcome of
fastboot getvar version-main

There is no RUU for 1.54.401.10 available as at today.
What you need is a stock backup.
here is my TWRP backup for 1.54.401.10

Stock Recovery : http://sourceforge.net/projects/htconem8/files/Recovery/1.54.401.10_recovery.img/download
I guess you know how to do backup and restore with TWRP. If you don't have one, you can get the one that I'm using in the link in my sig.
Basic thing to do is :
1. extract the backup on your PC
2. transfer the backup folder to your sdcard or external_sd depending where your TWRP backup folder is.
3. boot to recovery and restore the backup
After backup successful, you'll be notify of an OTA update. Before you can do the update, you need :
1. reboot to bootloader
2. flash the stock recovery that I linked above
3. reboot
4. do the OTA

Hi Eddy, I have been in your RUU thread and have read a lot, but cant see a VODAP001 for UK in the thread. I have spoken to a guy with VODAP001 but based on german rom.
Is there a way round this as I am s-off, surely If I find the right bits I can get to a stock state for a warranty repair? I'm getting nervous I wont be able to restore back to a factory state before the courier comes on thursday

Ok Eddy, thanks mate, Im just going to have to go for it aren't i!
So can I just run through and confirm with you:
Change CID back to VODAP001.
flash the nandroid backup in restore in twrp
flash the firmware in fastboot ruu...
Then look up on forum to change back to 'Locked'
Is this it have I missed any steps? I will give a go tonight and let you know, otherwise Im going to have to try and cancel this htc warrants fix as they will probably refuse and charge me!
I do have a friend sat next to me at work, who has an unrooted stock Vodafone m8, is there anyway he can create a RUU for me to apply to my phone?! - just another option I was thinking....
RUU - no. Backup - yes

no he doesn't need a root - if he will root then the backup will not be worth much
you can put device in fastboot - start TWRP - WITHOUT flashing - and do NANDROID backup then

how do you get into twrp i thought you need to be root to change recovery?
If the bootloader is unlocked you can just boot into TWRP by using fastboot boot recovery.img as opposed to fastboot flash recovery recovery.img. This wa it'll just temporarily load TWRP and allow you to back the phone up

While ckpv5 is right about getting your phone details I can add that to see the backup in recovery the files need to be in a folder with your phone serial number as the title in 'Backups'. To find the correct name of the folder first make a backup of your current rom in recovery. This will create a folder with the correct title then you can copy in the files from the backup you want to restore.
After doing that you should be able to see the backup you want to restore.

Sense your unlocked you can flash a custom recovery using fastboot as i would use twrp. An then download supersu.zip an flash it in your newly installed twrp recovery. An now you are rooted.
Maybe I didn't explain properly my bootloader is not unlocked yet, just wanted to know since the update is there a new root method....? Thanks for replying

nbd. You should be able to use htcdev.com to unlock your bootloader Or you can go the s-off way(which I recommend) use the sunshine app for s-off(if your device is capable of s-off now) an if it is sunshine will s-off an unlock for you an then do what I said above post. Those r really your only 2 choices.
FYI you will need to be on either of the latest two twrp versions to install su binaries properly if you have issues. Sunshine wouldn't work for me but its really easy to unlock bootloader and install twrp and su
If i'm s-off already I should be able to run the latest RUU to get me up to date with the firmware and then flash TWRP and then a rom correct?

You could do that yes. Or just flash the firmware zip an then flash twrp an flash updated ROM an you r up to date....if you run ruu it will wipe your device so backup your stuff to a PC or external an then proceed with ruu an flashing twrp then ROM. After you flash twrp I recommend strongly to make a backup of stock before you wipe to flash new ROM.

I guess i'm confused because of my Hboot being on 3.19. I've been wondering if there is a need to run a higher Hboot that probably came out with the new OTA, but the VenonRom 4.2 has been running with no problems. So i guess what I am really trying to achieve is upgrading HBoot and Radio.

Those r removed. Why you wonder because if boot.IMG is included an your on a custom ROM that don't use stock boot.IMG an modules you will be in a boot loop till you fastboot your ROM boot.img an recovery is removed because who wants a stock recovery to replace twrp then you have to flash your twrp back. Make sense to you?

Hey all
Ran into a bit of a problem. I followed another sites instructions on rooting the HTC10 which basically said : Unlock Bootloader > Flash TWRP > Install SuperSU > Reboot phone.
What it didn't include was backing up the System Image.
Now, the phone will not recognize my SIM card at all.
Does anyone have a system image backup I can use to get the SIM working again ?

I've already checked that thread (actually, was the first place I checked)
Couldn't see a CID for VODAP021
Is there another Backup image I can use that would be compatible ?

You try formatting data? Obviously back everything up to external SD or computer beforehand.

That was a oversight on my behalf. Besides, never needed to do anything like that on the M8, so it didn't really cross my mind at the time.
Anyway, its been done. Any way to recovery it now ?
Maybe with a stock ROM ?

Thanks for this guide and your teams' fast support of the 10. It's really appreciated. I got S-Off without issue.
One note about the guide, reboot to recovery does not currently work. It will only reboot to download, bootloader or system and attempting to reboot to recovery will reboot to system instead. @Captain_Throwback indicated this is a known issue with the current build of TWRP.

You can't even boot now?
Jut an FYI on VZW 10, you need to check oem unlock in developer options to unlock bootloader BUT it's not there. I assume Verizon hid it.
@jcase many thanks for this man! Now I have an idea of what to do next week.
Will donate in the form of buying sunshine again for sure. :good:

Have you tried re-locking the bootloader and using HTC's RUU for your device? Screwed up my previous phones and restored them using RUU. It will delete ALL data including TWRP though
Anyone got help with command promts etc, step by step for terminal with a Mac? With regards to HTC Dev part?
Clearly i'm not that super on it, but follow guides pretty well and have been able to do the HTC M7 but forgotten all the terminal parts..

Enabling this would not enable unlocking the bootloader, even if you could reach it in the UI.
Verizon users need to just wait a bit for a pure SunShine solution

It's been tested out...by me...and external SD will not mount in twrp. So you won't be able to make a backup. Uhl works perfectly. Captain throwback even said in the thread that he didn't need to make the wl version. He thought the uhl version wouldn't even boot...but I confirmed that it would.
