I know there are a few workarounds for other devices. I was wondering if anyone has found a way to use the NFC chip while the screen is off. I know there is an xposed module that does this but I am not interested in xposed as it does not support ART. I love the battery and speed improvement I see from having ART enabled and I do not want to go back.
Is there any other way to get this enabled. I have RFID tags from hotels that I use NFC retag and tasker to enable various changes for work, driving, home, and bedtime. I dont need secure payments/ google wallet or anything like that working just the ability to read tags and change some settings. I am rooted so that is not an issue.
I've seen some other devices that have a modified NFC.apk but I would not even know where to begin when it comes to modifying the apk. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I think there's an xposed module that will do that.

Please read before you post, I explicitly stated I did not want a xposed module as I value the beauty that is ART on my phone.

Maybe you can use a modified NFC.apk from an S5 or something.

Would that work? I am guessing that the chances are pretty low especially because TW is so heavily integrated into android but at the same time it might be worth a shot. At worse I will temporarily break my nfc but it shouldn't cause any real damage... right??
It might being that they are the same chips (801). I don't think it had anything to do with skins.
The worse that could happen is your NFC won't work at all. Just make sure you backup whatever files you replace.

It is true both are on the 801 chip but after reading into it I don't think it will work.
I looked at the T-mobile S5 post here.
I read that it's compatibility is dependent on the framework/base and someone with a Verizon S5 couldn't get it working. I figure my chances are very slim at best. But thanks for the suggestion. I am sure one of the many awesome devs on XDA will eventually get around to modding our NFC package.
If anyone else has any ideas, I would really appreciate it. As of now, I think it is going to be a ART vs Xposed/NFC standoff and I don't think I am switching sides anytime soon.

Hi, just to let you know that i recently tried the xposed module on my lg g3 (vers. 855, V10j ROM) and it didn't work at all. I read that other g3 got the same problem, so i don't think there is a need for you to leave ART.
So no solution for this? I need this too!

damn, I really wanted to review his battery saving tips tips as i am already down to 84% after 2 and a half hours of the lightest use possible
EDIT: never mind, another classic case of a developer comparing apples to oranges. I am not going to name names but if I was to run those settings on the ICS rom I was running, I would get well over 24 hours of battery life. What is the point of having the convenience of Google wallet, if you have to fumble around in the menu turning on and off the NFC every time you use it. What is the point of having a Samsung based JB rom if you are going to turn off almost all of the Samsung baked in goodies (animations, S beam, ect). Might as well run CM 10, have NFC turned on and still have respectable battery life.
Don't get me wrong, he has done great work on this port but its like saying my 800HP small block chevy will get you great gas mileage.....if you bolt on a 2 barrel carb, limit the throttle travel, and under drive the blower.

I agree. Always seemed stupid to me to essentially turn your phone into nothing but a basic touchscreen without the added benefits of what makes the phone great.
To each its own. I for one flash JB TW to have what JB offers and what TW offers. For that CM10 is perfectly fine.

I had PGM on my galaxy nexus.... after getting used to it, it really really hard to live without this feature (especially after a few failed hardware buttons on phones in the past). Alongside the on-screen buttons, my phone required no hardware button pressing.
This is the one feature I will go to the ends of the earth looking for, and unfortunately I have yet to find anything like this for the S4. The reason this is such an obscure feature is because it requires low level kernel+hardware development, and from what I have heard from ponery and other devs, getting the kernel and screen to listen for specific screen input /w a corresponding kernel module (while keeping battery drain at an acceptable level) requires very very specific hardware and boatloads of very extensive, tricky, and sensitive development.
I wish someone would make something like this for the S4 (if ponery did I would jump for joy), and I would pay good money for it too.
It would have been really awesome if samsung would have included this type of feature alongside airview (and made sure they were both really really polished.... like an open airview api out-of-the-box), instead of the dumpster full of gimmicky garbage they did include.

So I'm a samsung n00b - long-time HTC user - but I noticed something strange.
I was playing with either a Verizon or Sprint GN3 @ best buy and noticed that the Auto-Brightness had a slider to tweak it from -5 to +5. I am trying out a GN3 from T-Mobile and I do not see that option for auto-brightness tweaking.
Is this something T-Mobile purposely/accidentally tweaked in their ROM only? If so, do any of the custom ROMs for T-Mo replace this functionality? I'm a paid user of Lux, which kicks ass, but it tends to use more battery than I'd like.
Thanks!

There's no good reason for having a carrier check to use tethering either. There's no reason for Verizon to remove blocking mode. There's pretty much no reason for anything stupid the carriers do

Correct - the Samsung ROMs natively allow you to tune the auto-adjustment. So you can make it tend to be brigher or dimmer, but still have it auto-adjust. For some reason, the T-Mo ROM pulls this out. Go to Best Buy and play with a Verizon or Sprint GN3 and you'll see the option.
Frustrating.

Yeah, but you're using xposed which requires rooting. Or you have the N9005(international unlocked) not the N9005-T (this is the tmobile model). Tmobile did remove it for some reason and the only way to get it back and working is to use an international rom. Even xposed doesn't work. It puts the slider back, but the slider does nothing. I have xposed, so I'm not just saying things.

I was just about to search this topic. Why the hell would Tmobole remove this feature? On the T-Mobile note2 auto brightness was too aggressive as is the T-Mobile note3. Big sucker of battery life. I've been doing brightness manually the last couple of days and my battery life has almost doubled. This is one of the few things that make me miss my international note2. I've been out of the flashing scene for awhile because I didn't want to trigger SDS on note2 so I haven't had time to read up on flashing international ROM. Is it as easy as flashing recovery and then international ROM without radio? Does some of the bloat go away?

I have a sprint G2, and while i havent gotten it to work in a store for Tap and Pay, I have used it to NFC beam files between phones, though I did notice that it takes a good bit of time to recognize and initiate the NFC connection, but it does work...
Whatever the issue, I hope it gets sorted soon, since one of the reasons I finally upgraded from my EvoLTE was to be able to continue using Tap and Pay and....I still can't

From what I understand, all the other variants use the same chip. So all the ROMs include the needed code for that chip. Most Devs aren't going to write a separate set up for just one version of the phone (sprint). Although I believe dr87 was working on a flashable zip file for nfc.

Does this exist yet? Or has anyone found a workaround on cm11?
Bump
There is a post over in the NFC hacking forums regarding this. The Sprint variant uses NXP whereas the other variants use broadcom. Currently, AOSP ROMs (4.4.x) on devices with NXP do not support Tap and pay functionality with Google wallet. There is quite a team working on a solution. As for now, if you want tap and pay, unfortunately, you have to stick with stock. (This is the only reason I haven't gone AOSP with my LS980)
Has there been any progress with getting NFC working on any ROMs?
Has anyone tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-g2/help/cm11-nfc-fixer-t2841555
Can someone explain how this will work? are the games rendered at 2560*1440 or is it 1920*1080 scaled? or is it up to the game developers how this works?
I like the LG G3 but I'm a little concerned about the extreme resolution and how it will effect gaming performance, I'm probably worrying about nothing and Android has a way of handling this but I want to be sure.

The games with 1080P Resolutions will run on 1080P resolution itself. Its like watching a 720P movie on a 1080P display. Unless they come up with the new Quad HD [xxxhdpi] trend.

How about emulators like N64 or PS, if they have no option to set resolution will they be forced to use 2560*1440 when going fullscreen?

Se those markings on the bottom? Ye, pre-release test unit with pre-release software. Even the global pre-release software is smooth.

Just give the devs some time and Im sure they will bypass the bootloader in one way or another. The phone hasnt hit the global market yet.

Someone is offering me $500 for my s5 right now as of this moment, he Gave me a week.... Would you do it?
Thanks in advance, any feed back is appreciated... Only reason I held back is because I don't know how strong development will on g3, so I told him to give me a week.

I'd sell the lag machine and get the G3.

as long as t-mo doesn't pull the stunt they did with g2 then you would be able to root g3 on t-mo
So on the g2 t-mo released there variant on 10c we had easy root access and it was easily exploitable for loki usage; fast forward about 8 months to the killer kitkat update for the g2 it took the devs exactly 6 days to figure out a workaround to use loki but 13 days total because we needed the source from lg(they slowed us down), fast forward to late April early May the ls980 finally got kitkat and autoprime(awesome dev) figured out a way to root using the stock recovery and shared it with the community and suddeny there were a lot of reports that the d801 t-mo variant was not being rooted, that there devices were being wiped and it turns out that for some reason t-mo removed access to the stock recovery, it was still there but it was only there for the factory reset option and so root was not and still is not possible on the t-mo g2 all the t-mo users need to downgrade to 4.2 root and either update to kk and hope root survives for those without supersu pro that had survival mode or downgrade to 4.2 root/custom recovery and then install a flashable 4.4 rom for there variants
so if you read my mini rant I suggest you wait until after the g3 is released on t-mo and we have more available information
