Let's discuss "backups"... - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

OK I want to discuss backups so I'm clear on them. When we're told "make sure you backup" when we flash a new mod or someone comes up with a new whatever, what exactly are we to do.? I have a back up through philz recovery/backup/restore/backup to SD card1. Is this the best way to back up?.. Do we make a custom backup everytime we flash a new whatever it is? Thanks... Phil

yes use Philz for the backup and its recommended to have the backup just in case things go bat-**** so you wont have to Odin back to Stock and do everything from scratch....i personally only make a backup when im gonna flash something major like Bootloader, Modem, Rom, Splash Screen, Boot Animation, Ported Apps, De Bloating...things like that

I make a nandroid whenever I'm going to do something that I would regret not being able to restore from easily. I keep a minimum of two backups, usually the two most recent ones.
Recovery FLASHABLE version now posted near the bottom of the first post of the 3Minit Battery Mod for Conquest-Singularity and both Stock ND8 and NDC with 1000+ animated battery icons..

Best way to update...

So I rooted a friend's evo about a year ago and it is running:
Android 2.2
Kernel 2.6.32.17-gee557fd [email protected] #15
It wants to update to System Upgrade 4.24.651.1 (109.22mb) FOTA update. It fails because it is rooted...
What is the best way to do this? Unroot and update? Or flash the rooted rom?
Hey,
you my friend need to post in the right section Q/A ask a mod to move it....
but the easiest would be to flash a custom rooted rom.
Oh and btw never update ota with root many bad things can happen.

Thanks! Is this something I can flash over what he has now? If so, I will have to backup his data, right? Also, I will do a nandroid backup just in case...
Back up the apps using titanium backup, wipe, flash, and re-install (user apps only) with titanium backup. There are other apps out there that will back up contacts and text messages separately, but I have personally always had the best luck with Titanium back-up when it comes to apps. To really give yourself a chance at minimal issues only restore the apps and not the data unless you really need to.

Unless told otherwise, always do a full wipe TWICE! I back up all of my apps before a flash.

Did you use ROM manger to back your ROM? And the 1979 that's the same thing I got when I back up my phone using the recovery. So that might be it. Another question how many time did you back up your gs3 ?

Dose the 1979 file like something like 1979-01-02.12-34 that's not right but something like that if then it might be that but since u use cwm . You have a file on your SD card called cwm which your back up file should be there . And I believe it is name after that number . . Just in case have a ROM zip ready .. restore that file if it work you good if it don't it well tell just read. Then go flash to the zip ROM you have then go find a stock ROM and flash over .. simple... good luck

[Q] UCALEM upgrade question

I rooted my GS3 right after it came out, and quickly froze all AT&T apps including the OTA updater, so I had no idea I am currently a few versions behind.
My question is what path do I need to take? Do I need to first flash an earlier update? Or can I jump straight to the newest?
And as for my device, I am rooted with the latest CWM Recovery, 0 still on the flash counter, and all the bloat still intact, just frozen in TB. Been searching and reading threads for a while, but no clue what exactly I need to do xD
Oh and here is a screenshot of my devices info.

If you just want stock rooted, you can grab LG1 from here.

Not sure about any other updates. You could probably un freeze all the bloat and get ota root keeper and try to update.

You can jump right to LH9 (latest OTA) using this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31802808
Just download all the files in the PIECES section, install them all in recovery before you reboot and make sure you flash the kernel after the ROM.

I still have all the stock apps in place, just frozen, so can't I just use the main file instead of the individual pieces? Yes I am just that lazy xD

The main zip is a patch and requires you have LG1 installed first. You could apply the LG1 OTA (I have another thread in general with a zip for it) but that seems harder to me.

I had the same problem, chances are you or an app had changed the build description in the build.prop file.
If you installed something like the Google wallet installer it may have done that. If that is the case, install it again and click restore build.prop.

Well I had google wallet installed through the Google wallet installer app, so I restored the build.prop...phone booted up and just stayed at a black screen. So that apparently didn't work lol.
The good: I can boot into recovery
The bad: didn't follow the #1 rule of backing up the current ROM... Looks like I'm reflashing and setting up the ROM again. (I'm bored right now any ways)

That's odd, I've never had that issue with the wallet installer, used it yesterday in fact. Did you make sure you checked the correct options (JB TW / ICS TW / CM and carrier)?

Yeah, I made sure checked the right settings. I'll just flash the recovery with Odin.

In order for google wallet to setup properly it checks for supported devices. The only official one is the nexus. So the installer changes the build.prop to the nexus. There is either sn option in the installer to change it back or it makes a backup in the system folder and u can do it manually.

Your auto correct makes this question difficult to understand. What exactly is the issue? Ktoonez kernel is compatible with this device. Many folks swear by it. What's your issue please?

It is compatible. What modem are you using? Are you on KitKat? Try reactivating your phone by going into your phone dialer and pressing ##72786# give it awhile. Sometimes custom kernels take awhile to capture data.

A couple people have reported this recently. I don't know why it works for some and not others.
